18 – 20 MEHEFIN / JUNE 2021 THEATR BYW O’R LLWYFAN I’CH SGRIN LIVE THEATRE FROM THE STAGE TO YOUR SCREEN

AM FAUST + GRETA ABOUT FAUST + GRETA

Croeso i fyd Faust + Greta!

Welcome to the world of Faust + Greta!

Ers mis Tachwedd 2020, mae ensemble o bobl ifanc 18–25 oed o ogledd-orllewin Cymru wedi bod yn dod at ei gilydd i ddyfeisio a pherfformio’r cynhyrchiad arbennig hwn – a’u gwaith nhw byddwch chi’n ei weld heno, wedi’i lwyfannu mewn theatr wag a’i ffrydio’n fyw i’ch sgriniau.

Since November 2020, an ensemble of 18 – 25 year olds from north-west Wales have been working together to devise and perform this new production – and it is their work you’ll see tonight, staged in an empty theatre and streamed live to your screens.

Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan drosiad Cymraeg T. Gwynn Jones o waith gwreiddiol Goethe, mae Faust + Greta yn stori gariad drasig sy’n dod â’r clasur Almaeneg yn fyw o’r newydd mewn gweledigaeth feiddgar o’r Gymru gyfoes. Mae aelodau’r ensemble wedi cael cyfle i ymwneud â phob elfen o Faust + Greta, ochr yn ochr â chyfarwyddwyr y cynhyrchiad – Nia Lynn a Gethin Evans – a chast a thîm creadigol profiadol.

Mae byd tywyll a thwyllodrus, a phrofiadau newydd, yn aros amdanoch. Pa mor bell allwn ni eich temtio?

Inspired by T. Gwynn Jones’s Welsh translation of Goethe’s classic, Faust + Greta is a tragic and twisted love story that sees the original German tale re-imagined in an amped-up, contemporary Wales. The ensemble members have been involved with every aspect of Faust + Greta, alongside the production’s directors - Nia Lynn and Gethin Evans – and an experienced cast and creative team.

A dark and devious world, and new experiences beckon. How far can we tempt you?

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to this live digital performance of Faust + Greta. This project is very close to our hearts at Frân Wen for a number of reasons; it’s our Artistic Director Gethin Evans’ first production with Frân Wen; a project that truly supports our vision of empowering young people and putting them at the heart of our artistic programme; a production that pushes the limits of theatre in every meaning of the word and a collaborative process which has offered us the privilege of co-producing and co-creating with Wales’ foremost organisations and artists. Over almost seven months, we have been inspired and astounded by the commitment and generosity of the wonderful young people who have embraced this experimental process for creating theatre, under exceptionally challenging and difficult circumstances. Thanks to you all. Driven and supported by an incredible team of Welsh artists, it’s a source of pride for us and our co-producers that you’ll experience the ideas and values of young people while watching this production from your sofa. We hope you will agree that this interpretation and staging of an old text is completely original, inclusive and relevant to today’s Wales and excellent evidence of what can be achieved artistically by stepping beyond the norm.

Rhoi theatr Gymraeg wrth galon y genedl yw nod Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, ac yn sgil y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae’n bwysicach nag erioed i ni feithrin artistiaid y dyfodol – a hynny trwy annog, cefnogi a chreu cyfleoedd i ragor o bobl ymwneud â’r celfyddydau perfformio. A dyna pam fod y prosiect hwn – sydd wedi grymuso a datblygu hyder a thalentau ensemble o artistiaid ifanc o ogleddorllewin Cymru – mor bwysig i ni. Mae wedi bod yn bleser cydweithio gyda’n ffrindiau yn Frân Wen a Pontio i greu a chyflwyno’r cynhyrchiad hwn ac i roi lleisiau pobl ifanc wrth galon ein gwaith. Diolch i’r tîm anhygoel sydd y tu ôl i’r cynhyrchiad beiddgar hwn ac i bawb sydd wedi rhannu yn y siwrne ryfeddol hon i gyflwyno Faust + Greta – ac i chi, y gynulleidfa, am eich cefnogaeth. Ond rhaid diolch yn bennaf i aelodau’r ensemble am eu brwdfrydedd diflino, eu creadigrwydd anhygoel a’u gwaith caled drwy gydol y cyfnod anarferol hwn. Rydych chi’n sêr, bob un!

Placing Welsh-language theatre at the heart of the nation is Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s mission, and in light of the past year, it’s more important than ever that we nurture the artists of the future – by encouraging, supporting and creating opportunities for more people to engage with the performing arts. That’s why this project – which helped empower and develop the confidence and talents of an ensemble of young artists from north-west Wales – is so important to us. It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with our friends at Frân Wen and Pontio to create and present this production and place young people’s voices at the heart of our work. Thanks to the incredible team behind this daring production and to everybody who has been part of this extraordinary journey to present Faust + Greta – and to you, the audience, for your support. But our biggest thanks is to the ensemble members for their tireless enthusiasm, incredible creativity and hard work throughout this unusual period. You’re all stars!
