Welcome to Pontio’s new season As we look towards our next season of events, it’s hard not to feel that we inhabit a world that’s a little less secure at the moment. And so we turn towards the arts to help us understand each other and the world around us that little bit better... From drama that celebrates the life of one who wasn’t accepted by society due to his less than conventional ways – the 5th Marquess of Anglesey in How to Win Against History – to The Mountaintop, a play recalling the life of one who fought against racial discrimination, Martin Luther King, fifty years after his assassination. We welcome the quartet DakaBrakha to Pontio from the Ukraine, with their indigenous voices, unfamiliar to us, and we première a brand new opera in Welsh by Mererid Hopwood and
Gareth Glyn which portrays two starkly contrasting versions of Wales in the future, in an adaptation of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’ novel Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd. Our National Dance Company, in partnership with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, offers a reimagining of Parade, a revolutionary piece of dance celebrating its 100th anniversary which ties in with a momentous moment in world history – the Russian Revolution. We stage a magical production for children, Caban Hud

(Magical Caban) which shows that it IS possible to make dreams come true with hard work, and a timely ‘Rock Against Racism’ gig embraces difference. There is beauty and vitality in voice and colour, in stories and circus tricks, but also in the things that make every one of us unique. Ensemble Cymru
Landmarks Powis Hall £10 Ensemble Cymru showcase some of the finest chamber music by female composers in this landmark concert. Pride of place goes to Grace Williams’s Sextet, a rarely-performed work championed by the Ensemble, which includes a prominent part for trumpet - the Welsh composer’s favourite instrument. Hilary Tann’s haunting trio The Walls of Morlais Castle is directly inspired by the ruins
of the 13th-century castle near Merthyr Tydfil, while the spirit of Irish jig lies at the heart of Rhian Samuel’s dynamic Phantasy Trio. The Ensemble also perform young Welsh composer Claire Victoria Roberts’s new trio, Block (winner of the William Mathias Composition Prize 2017), and are joined by baritone Jeremy Huw Williams for the world premiere of Nicola LeFanu’s The Swan. 6

This innovative concert features music by female composers across the ages – from 11th-century Hildegard of Bingen’s exquisite Caritas Abundat to Grace Williams’s My Last Duchess and current Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir’s electrifying King Harald’s Saga.

Bywyd gyda’r Signora Studio £12 Bruna Lupoli was maid, housekeeper and companion to the great soprano Maria Callas for nearly twenty years. The woman known as “the soprano of the century” led a life as full of passion and drama as the operatic roles she portrayed. In the one-act presentation of “Life with the Signora”, Bruna reminisces on the later years of Callas’ life, reflecting on the downward spiral in her career and personal life which led to her early death in September 1977. Bruna’s reminiscences are illustrated by performances of arias from Maria Callas’ greatest roles – arias which mirror the tragedy and drama of her life. (Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Traviata…)
Anne Williams-King, herself a soprano of international stature who has sung many of Callas’ operatic roles all over the world, portrays the diva with former Covent Garden singer and vocal coach Marian Bryfdir as Bruna Lupoli. Written and directed by Jamie-Glyn Bale. With Anne Williams-King as Maria Callas and Marian Bryfdir as Bruna Lupoli. Wales’s leading chamber music ensemble, Ensemble Cymru, will mark its 15 year anniversary with a very special and extended concert at Pontio this autumn, bringing together world-class musicians with a passion for sharing rare chamber music from Wales and the world. Menna Cazel Davies has a beautiful, warm, lyric soprano voice, a strong stage presence and natural performing ability. She made her professional operatic debut in 2014 singing Erste Blumenmädchen in Parsifal for Oper Leipzig. She has already received great success in Wales, winning all the major prizes for singers under twenty five years of age - the W. Towyn Roberts scholarship and the Osborne Roberts Memorial Award at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, and first prize at the 2009 Llangollen International Eisteddfod. She also won the inaugural 'Voice of the Future Award' at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 2013. 46
One of the foremost accompanists of his generation, New York born Eugene Asti has performed with many great artists including Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Thomas Allen, Angelika Kirchschlager, Sir Bryn Terfel and the late Dame Margaret Price. An official Steinway artist since 2009, Eugene returns to Bangor following a sell-out concert with Sir Williard White in 2014, this time to perform with soprano Menna Cazel and to undertake outreach work and a master class for young singers.

Côr y Penrhyn and Gwawr Edwards Theatr Bryn Terfel £12 Musical Director: Owain Arwel Davies Accompanist: Francis Davies Assistant Conductor: Caleb Rhys Jones Côr y Penrhyn has its roots in the slate quarrying village of Bethesda in the Ogwen Valley. The choir can trace its origins back to the 1880s, when a united choir was formed from a number of smaller groups that existed on the various galleries or levels in the mighty Penrhyn Slate Quarry.
The Penrhyn Male Choir is one of the busiest choirs in Wales with around 30 concerts a year, and has taken part in a variety of projects with other musicians, dancers and artists. Gwawr Edwards studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has recently released her second Album 'Alleluia' featuring Only Men Aloud, Rhys Taylor's dixieland jazz 54
band, mezzo-soprano Caryl Hughes, and Côr Ieunectid Môn. She has recently played the role of Mair in OPRA Cymru’s Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd. She has toured the UK with Sir Bryn Terfel performing at Birmingham Symphony Hall, London Festival Hall, Manchester Bridgewater Hall, and Cardiff St David's hall accompanied by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

exciting and haunting Gloria for choir and orchestra, and concludes with one of the best known works in the repertoire: Mussorgsky’s ingenious Pictures at an Exhibition, based on paintings and designs by the Russian artist Viktor Hartmann, and rendered even more colourful in Ravel’s spectacular orchestration.

Philip Pullman, a Fellow of Bangor University, is the acclaimed author of the His Dark Materials trilogy: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. His other books for children and young adults include Count Karlstein and a trilogy of Victorian thrillers featuring Sally Lockhart. Northern Lights, the first of Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Taking the author’s latest book La Belle Sauvage, Volume 1 of The Book of Dust published this autumn 56
