Welcome to Pontio’s new season As we look towards our next season of events, it’s hard not to feel that we inhabit a world that’s a little less secure at the moment. And so we turn towards the arts to help us understand each other and the world around us that little bit better... From drama that celebrates the life of one who wasn’t accepted by society due to his less than conventional ways – the 5th Marquess of Anglesey in How to Win Against History – to The Mountaintop, a play recalling the life of one who fought against racial discrimination, Martin Luther King, fifty years after his assassination. We welcome the quartet DakaBrakha to Pontio from the Ukraine, with their indigenous voices, unfamiliar to us, and we première a brand new opera in Welsh by Mererid Hopwood and

Gareth Glyn which portrays two starkly contrasting versions of Wales in the future, in an adaptation of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’ novel Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd. Our National Dance Company, in partnership with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, offers a reimagining of Parade, a revolutionary piece of dance celebrating its 100th anniversary which ties in with a momentous moment in world history – the Russian Revolution. We stage a magical production for children, Caban Hud

5

(Magical Caban) which shows that it IS possible to make dreams come true with hard work, and a timely ‘Rock Against Racism’ gig embraces difference. There is beauty and vitality in voice and colour, in stories and circus tricks, but also in the things that make every one of us unique. Here at Pontio, we will always try and play a part in encouraging tolerance and celebrate diversity in the way we create and present the arts. Elen ap Robert Pontio Artistic Director

Ensemble Cymru

Landmarks Powis Hall £10 Ensemble Cymru showcase some of the finest chamber music by female composers in this landmark concert. Pride of place goes to Grace Williams’s Sextet, a rarely-performed work championed by the Ensemble, which includes a prominent part for trumpet - the Welsh composer’s favourite instrument. Hilary Tann’s haunting trio The Walls of Morlais Castle is directly inspired by the ruins

of the 13th-century castle near Merthyr Tydfil, while the spirit of Irish jig lies at the heart of Rhian Samuel’s dynamic Phantasy Trio. The Ensemble also perform young Welsh composer Claire Victoria Roberts’s new trio, Block (winner of the William Mathias Composition Prize 2017), and are joined by baritone Jeremy Huw Williams for the world premiere of Nicola LeFanu’s The Swan. 6

Ensemble Cymru – Huw Clement-Evans (oboe), Cai Isfryn (trumpet), Florence Cooke (violin), Sara Roberts (viola), Heather Bills (cello) and Harvey Davies (piano). This concert is part of The First International Conference on Women’s Work in Music, School of Music, Bangor University 2017. 10% discount for groups of ten or more

On Wings of Song Elin Manahan Thomas Jeremy Huw Williams Paula Fan

Theatr Bryn Terfel £15/£12 concessions £5 students and under 18s Internationally acclaimed Welsh singers Elin Manahan Thomas and Jeremy Huw Williams make their Theatr Bryn Terfel debut, accompanied by American pianist Paula Fan. This innovative concert features music by female composers across the ages – from 11th-century Hildegard of Bingen’s exquisite Caritas Abundat to Grace Williams’s My Last Duchess and current Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir’s electrifying King Harald’s Saga.

Elin Manahan Thomas gives the world premiere of a hitherto unknown soprano version of Dilys ElwynEdwards’s The Cloths of Heaven, and Jeremy Huw Williams premieres Eleanor Alberga’s song-cycle The Soul’s Expression. An exhilarating concert not to be missed! This concert is part of The First International Conference on Women’s Work in Music, School of Music, Bangor University 2017. 10% discount for groups of ten or more 7

On Wings of Song: Pre-concert talk Pontio Studio 6.15pm FREE but booking required Elen ap Robert and Geraint Lewis discuss the work of the composer Dilys Elwyn-Edwards and other female composers of her time. The discussion will be in Welsh with simultaneous translation, and will be streamed live on the web.

Bywyd gyda’r Signora Studio £12 Bruna Lupoli was maid, housekeeper and companion to the great soprano Maria Callas for nearly twenty years. The woman known as “the soprano of the century” led a life as full of passion and drama as the operatic roles she portrayed. In the one-act presentation of “Life with the Signora”, Bruna reminisces on the later years of Callas’ life, reflecting on the downward spiral in her career and personal life which led to her early death in September 1977. Bruna’s reminiscences are illustrated by performances of arias from Maria Callas’ greatest roles – arias which mirror the tragedy and drama of her life. (Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Traviata…)

Anne Williams-King, herself a soprano of international stature who has sung many of Callas’ operatic roles all over the world, portrays the diva with former Covent Garden singer and vocal coach Marian Bryfdir as Bruna Lupoli. Written and directed by Jamie-Glyn Bale. With Anne Williams-King as Maria Callas and Marian Bryfdir as Bruna Lupoli. Sung in Welsh and Italian, with some English. 10% discount for groups of ten or more – please contact Box Office 01248 38 28 28

The Golden Dragon Theatr Bryn Terfel £15 adult / £12 over 60s / £5 students and under 18s By Peter Eötvös Based on the play by Roland Schimmelpfennig Set in a Chinese restaurant found in any city anywhere, The Golden Dragon is a compelling fable of modern life. At the heart of this East-meets-West tale, is the discovery of a decayed tooth in a bowl of soup. It belongs to a kitchen boy, a long way from home and with no papers. He’s looking for his sister, but she’s been forced into a very different kind of service just next door...

Côr y Penrhyn and Gwawr Edwards Theatr Bryn Terfel £12 Musical Director: Owain Arwel Davies Accompanist: Francis Davies Assistant Conductor: Caleb Rhys Jones Côr y Penrhyn has its roots in the slate quarrying village of Bethesda in the Ogwen Valley. The choir can trace its origins back to the 1880s, when a united choir was formed from a number of smaller groups that existed on the various galleries or levels in the mighty Penrhyn Slate Quarry.

The Penrhyn Male Choir is one of the busiest choirs in Wales with around 30 concerts a year, and has taken part in a variety of projects with other musicians, dancers and artists. Gwawr Edwards studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has recently released her second Album 'Alleluia' featuring Only Men Aloud, Rhys Taylor's dixieland jazz 54

band, mezzo-soprano Caryl Hughes, and Côr Ieunectid Môn. She has recently played the role of Mair in OPRA Cymru’s Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd. She has toured the UK with Sir Bryn Terfel performing at Birmingham Symphony Hall, London Festival Hall, Manchester Bridgewater Hall, and Cardiff St David's hall accompanied by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Bangor University Symphony Orchestra Prichard-Jones Hall £12/£10 over 60/£5 students and under 18s Bangor University Chorus Iwan Llewelyn-Jones (piano) Chris Collins (conductor) Poulenc Gloria Ravel Piano Concerto for the Left Hand Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition An evening of spectacular and evocative music from north-west Wales’ longestestablished symphony orchestra, joined by the

Bangor University Chorus and locally-born and internationally-renowned pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones. Ravel wrote his stirring Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in 1932 for the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War: its journey from darkness to light evokes both the spirit of the times and Wittgenstein’s own personal trajectory. The concert opens with Poulenc’s 55

exciting and haunting Gloria for choir and orchestra, and concludes with one of the best known works in the repertoire: Mussorgsky’s ingenious Pictures at an Exhibition, based on paintings and designs by the Russian artist Viktor Hartmann, and rendered even more colourful in Ravel’s spectacular orchestration.

The Magic of Storytelling In Conversation with Philip Pullman Theatr Bryn Terfel £17.50/£12 students and under 18s Contact the box office for discounts on group bookings: 01248 38 28 28 Chaired by Jon Gower “As a passionate believer in the democracy of reading, I don't think it's the task of the author of a book to tell the reader what it means. The meaning of a story emerges in the meeting between the words on the page and the thoughts in the reader's mind. So when people ask me what I meant by this story, or what was the message I was trying to convey in that one, I have to explain that I'm not going to explain. Anyway, I'm not in the message business; I'm in the "Once upon a time" business.”

Philip Pullman, a Fellow of Bangor University, is the acclaimed author of the His Dark Materials trilogy: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. His other books for children and young adults include Count Karlstein and a trilogy of Victorian thrillers featuring Sally Lockhart. Northern Lights, the first of Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Taking the author’s latest book La Belle Sauvage, Volume 1 of The Book of Dust published this autumn 56

as the point of departure, join us as we explore the magic of storytelling with Philip Pullman. Author and Former BBC Wales arts correspondent Jon Gower leads the discussion. Age advisory: 11+ Creative Writing and English Literature students at Bangor University will be able to choose new modules in Children's Literature (running from 2017) and Young Adult Fiction (running from 2018) as part of their degrees.

Favourite waltzes such as Wine, Women and Song, The Blue Danube and Gold and Silver alongside the TritschTratsch, Thunder and Lightning and Champagne polkas and the great Radetsky March, will adorn the rip-roaring second half, alongside some of the less familiar fare.
