editor’s Letter WE ARE
LISTENING!
This issue has been a lot of fun to work on! During all this fun, I have learned two important lessons.
LESSON #1: Do more thinking outside the box. You will have more fun. And more exciting stories to tell. One of the changes was to introduce a new feature - PQ Spotlight on the Breed. Each issue we spotlight a new breed of pony. This extra coverage extends to our social media channels as well. You’ll find breed specific info on our website, and illustrative pictures on Instagram! This new feature has become one of the staffs favorites! We have all enjoyed meeting new pony lovers who are passionate about the breed they are involved with! Everyday we have gotten to know people who often share wonderful stories about how they got involved in the breed, or how they found a particular stallion they stand or even how they recently lost one of their favorite ponies. This passion is infectious!

During the Spring the staff at PQ decided to send out a survey to get a better idea of what our readers wanted to read in the magazine. Not all of the results were what we expected. PQ staff had to think out of the box at how we were going to incorporate our readers desires into the vision we have for the magazine. These changes are not all easy, but our commitment to our readers pushed us to think outside the box.

What looks and moves like a Warmblood but wears a seventy inch blanket? A German Riding Pony of course! The Germans have been breeding and showing these “fun-sized” dressage and jumping dynamos for the past forty years. In the last ten years American dressage riders and breeders started following suit. Let’s take a look at the history of the breed and a couple of “pony addicted” Pony Quarterly subscribers and breeders.
The German Riding Pony (GRP) is a breed whose development began only forty years ago primarily in the warmblood breeding areas of northern Germany. Careful selection of breeding stock has led to the development of a modern pony that is athletic, elegant, and intelligent with a good disposition and suitability for small adult riders and children.

The goal was to maintain the pony character, type and willingness to perform along with the competitive athleticism of the full sized riding horses but in a smaller package. Development began in the mid-1960’s due to the need for a large pony with an athletic ability and temperament suitable for children to compete in dressage, eventing and show jumping. The goal was to maintain the pony character, type and willingness to perform along with the competitive athleticism of the full sized riding horses but in a smaller package. Early cross-breeding attempts between local farm ponies and Arabians or
small Thoroughbreds to produce a sport pony were not successful and a shift in breeding direction was undertaken after the first generations were realized. By the 1970s a tactical change was implemented and breeders selectively started importing British ponies, primarily Welsh and New Forest ponies to provide a new foundation stock. By 1975 a recognizable and consistent pony type was being established and achieved success at national continued on page 9

pony competitions. This process took many years and great care was always taken to not lose the pony character and the suitability for children as competition and leisure mounts, an approach that continues today. Wilken Treu, breeding director of Westfalia states “In Germany we need ponies to start the relationship between children and horses especially at the beginning of riding. In sports the pony-competitions are open to children up to sixteen years, and it is the plan to bring children into horsesport with “small horses” that they can handle so that they keep having fun with riding and develop a love for the sport that lasts even as they are grown up. There has been a newer development during the last years; that smaller adults like to use ponies for riding as well due to the good character [of the German Riding Pony]. “ As with the warmblood breeding structure, pony stud books were developed in each of the breeding districts and formal inspection and approval processes for breeding stock were established. The Westfalen and Oldenburg (Weser-Ems) studbooks are the most successful and largest breeding regions for ponies in Germany today as well as maintain a strong pony presence in the USA.

Breed Standard and Inspection Process: The breed standard for the German Riding Pony is for an animal preferably between 138 cm and 149 cm or approximately 13.2 hands to 14.3 hands. The athletic and refined quality of a riding horse which retains the pony type is essential. The desired breed type includes a small head, large and lively eyes with small ears, a clean throatlatch, a long, well-set neck, pronounced withers and athletic topline and croup. According to Wilken Treu “Ponies need to have all characteristics of a riding horse. Nice head, middle length uphill neck, a big shoulder, a stable back and loin connection, long and clear legs and an athletic type and movement for sport. The gaits should be correct, rhythmic, swinging and elastic with clear impulsion from the hindquarters. The pony’s disposition should be friendly and welcoming, with a willingness to perform and reliability of character.” In order to be accepted as breeding stock both stallions and mares must be presented for inspection and entry into the breeding studbook. Stallions are presented for licensing at age two and a half. Once licensed, the stallions

in Germany have a two year provisional breeding approval and then must complete a two day test in addition to either a) successfully completing a thirty day performance test by the end of their four year old year or b) achieve acceptable results via competition at the Bundeschampionate (German National Championships for Young Horses). One of these two options must be completed for lifetime approval and acceptance into the studbook. Mares, upon inspection, may be entered into the studbook and quality mares may attend a performance test and mare show where they can achieve the State Premium Mare designation.

Two very active USDF riders, Audrey Maschue from Florida and USDF Silver Medalist Melissa Mulchahey of California, have spent the past several years both importing German Riding Pony stallions for USA breeders and riders to use as well as managing busy show schedules for their stallions.
Kathryn Barry and Klaus Biesenthal driving Makuba organizations in the U.S. now sanction the North American Stallion Test at Silver Creek Farm in Oklahoma as the official site of stallion testing, including a scaled-down version specifically for pony stallions, administered in accordance with the official FN standards (Germany’s equestrian association), this stallion test has been suspended in 2016, US pony stallion owners are waiting to see if an alternate testing will occur in the next years. Over the past forty years this selective and rigorous breeding process in both Germany and abroad has enabled the German Riding Pony to become the premier sport pony in the world.
The German Riding Pony in the USA: Over the past fifteen years the USA has become more and more aware of these wonderful, athletic ponies. Early breeding efforts and importation of stallions by Nancy Ferebee and Klaus Biesenthal laid the groundwork for today’s breed in the USA. Klaus had the honor of importing the first GRP stallion to the USA. “Makuba was bred by my father, who with a friend helped start the GRP in Germany,” Biesenthal explains According to Nancy Ferebee’s daughter “She thought [the German Riding Pony] was perfect for children to learn horsemanship and competition. She fell in love with the breed because children could ride these special horses and compete.” Nancy imported three German Riding Pony stallions in the early 2000s and played a vital role in early breeding efforts. As USA riders have gained awareness of these superbly athletic ponies there has been a definite upswing in the importation, breeding and riding of the German Riding Pony. Children as well as adult amateur riders are discovering this breed as a marvelous dressage partner due to their great temperament and ease of riding.
Audrey Maschue became involved with ponies in a roundabout way, “It was by chance that I got into GRP’s. I had a combined driving client who asked if I would help him with his driven dressage and train his ponies under saddle. I thought it would make a great summer project and by the end of August I was hooked on ponies. The German Riding Ponies are just as competitive as their warmblood counterparts. They are modern in type, smart and very hardy which gives them longevity in the sport arenas and finally they have excellent temperaments. It was those qualities, plus great movement that attracted me to my two stallions and it is those characteristics that make me excited about the future of the breed in the USA.” Maschue offers her stallions for breeding; she also competes them herself during the busy Wellington show season and manages a successful pony sales barn as well as running Pony Quarterly. In the past few years she’s noticed two trends: an increase in the number of mare owners who are booking breedings and adult amateur buyers and children continued on page 12

making the switch to dressage pony sport. “The clients using my stallions really run the gamut. Several are riders looking to breed their own smaller competitive dressage pony. Some are German Riding Pony breeders who are interested in the bloodlines and qualities my stallions bring.” Maschue’s immersion in dressage ponies has given her great enthusiasm for what good quality German Riding Ponies can do for USA dressage, “It is so important to have appropriate mounts for children but ponies aren’t just for kids. Adults can achieve their competitive goals on these ponies too.”

“I discovered riding them was more fun, less stress and easier on my body. I rode and loved my big horses for 20 years and was never a pony person until I got one,” Mulchahey reveals, “I’m never going back to anything over 15 hands again! Those of us “into” ponies often compare them to potato chips – as in you can’t have just one!”
Mulchahey first discovered German Riding Ponies on scouting trips to Germany for Westfalen and Hanoverian horses. Impressed by how well they were ridden by amateurs, professionals and children alike, she began to think about them for herself. “They really were ‘small warmbloods,’ with all of the gaits, conformation and work ethic of the 16.2 to 17.2 hand horses. I also discovered riding them was more fun, less stress and easier on my body. I rode and loved my big horses for 20 years and was never a pony person until I got one,” Mulchahey explains. “Several years ago I took the plunge and purchased a pony stallion that I gelded for riding, and I’m never going back to anything over 15 hands again! Those of us “into” ponies often compare them to potato chips – as in you can’t have just one!” Mulchahey expanded her role in ponies when she became not just a rider, but also an international pony stallion owner. She currently stands two stallions in the USA as well as a third stallion in Germany. Golden State NRW, USDF Horse of the Year 2014 First Level, was acquired in 2011 and imported in early 2014 after two years at stud and competing in Germany where he won the German National Championships for Young Horses (the Bundeschampionate). “Goldi from the beginning has been a superb athlete as well as the most honest and gentle horse I have ever known, all wrapped up in a palomino golden coat. He is totally reliable in his character and is wonderful with children of all ages and is an ideal example of a German Riding Pony stallion.” She has had numerous breeders in the USA select him for breeding. “My mare owners are quite diverse. Some are established GRP pony breeders looking to introduce his bloodline to their

foundation line. Others are adults with smaller horse mares (including S judges and international Grand Prix riders) looking to breed a ‘hony’ for themselves as a future competition mount.” Golden State has over 100 foals born worldwide. In 2013 she acquired the cremello stallion Golden West from the Westfalen pony stallion licensing and he remains in Germany at this time for breeding and competition. Though she was the first American owner in 2012 to win in any division at the German Young Horse championships with Golden State, she was more nervous the second and third times around with Golden West. “I didn’t think I could be so lucky as to win more than once,” she says. With top German pony rider Wibke Hartmann-Stommel in the saddle once more for Mulchahey, “Westi” won a tiebreaker to take the championship. A feat that he repeated in 2015 to make Golden West a rare two time Bundeschampion. “I was absolutely stunned and it was an amazing feeling with the total support of the German pony breeders and spectators. They were as thrilled as I was and have accepted me as one of their own.” Golden West has over 100 foals on the ground so far with another 70 expected in 2017 in Europe, Canada, USA and Australia. In 2015 Mulchahey has added a third stallion to her lineup. She has imported a then nine year old pony stallion, Petit Marc Aurel, as her personal competition mount. “Römer is a unique stallion for the USA. He has competed in Germany at a high level in eventing, show jumping and FEI dressage with great success in all sports. It’s an exciting time with my stallions available for breeding, managing a full competition schedule and having foals arriving all around the world.”
GRP stallion, Golden West, 2015 Champion of the Riding Pony Stallion Division in Warendorf, Germany. Owner Melissa Mulchahey holding the flowers.
She truly believes in the great qualities of the German Riding Pony as a mount for children and small adults alike. “These ponies have personality, physical hardiness and super rideability. They are sensible and have good instincts when you are riding them. They are self-confident, very smart, very quick to learn - like a pony, but they don’t have the infamous pony ‘attitude’. In short I believe German Riding Ponies are the ideal mount for aspiring dressage riders and adult amateurs looking for a great competitive mount in a smaller package.”

changed some of the ways she had been riding her second day competition. “She felt so comfortable and willing to please that second day,” Barton said, adding that her pony’s innate curiosity helped her accept some of Barton’s changes for the Individual test. “I went in the arena and felt like I could ask her for big extensions or really go deep into my corners in my counter canter because I knew she was truly on my aids and listening to me. In the end, we both learned lots. I came away so thankful and so, so pleased with all my pony has given me these past three years.” Barton’s plans for Bonnie are still in flux, since the pony has done some growing in the past year and does not have her permanent pony card. “Whether you see her with me in the FEI Junior classes next year or with another kid in the FEI Pony classes, you can bet that there will be a Custom Saddlery saddle on her back!” Barton said. “I actually bought a used Custom Icon Flight in May of 2016.
