editor’s Letter WE ARE

LISTENING!

This issue has been a lot of fun to work on! During all this fun, I have learned two important lessons.

LESSON #1: Do more thinking outside the box. You will have more fun. And more exciting stories to tell. One of the changes was to introduce a new feature - PQ Spotlight on the Breed. Each issue we spotlight a new breed of pony. This extra coverage extends to our social media channels as well. You’ll find breed specific info on our website, and illustrative pictures on Instagram! This new feature has become one of the staffs favorites! We have all enjoyed meeting new pony lovers who are passionate about the breed they are involved with! Everyday we have gotten to know people who often share wonderful stories about how they got involved in the breed, or how they found a particular stallion they stand or even how they recently lost one of their favorite ponies. This passion is infectious!

SUMMER 2016

THE

During the Spring the staff at PQ decided to send out a survey to get a better idea of what our readers wanted to read in the magazine. Not all of the results were what we expected. PQ staff had to think out of the box at how we were going to incorporate our readers desires into the vision we have for the magazine. These changes are not all easy, but our commitment to our readers pushed us to think outside the box.

PQ Spotlight on the BREED Connemara

THE

The American Connemara Pony Society was formed in 1956 to promote the breed. They are Celebrating their 60th Anniversary and the Pony Quarterly is thrilled to celebrate with them by spotlighting the breed.

CONNEMARA PONY DOES IT ALL! Story by PQ Staff

T

he Connemara Pony is named after the wild, rocky Connemara region on Ireland’s west coast where the breed hailed from and were revered by the local farmers. It is actually the only breed native to Ireland and has been traced back to the 5th Century B.C. where they looked more like the Shetland Pony, than the Connemaras we know today. Known for their athleticism, versatility and hardiness they are now bred worldwide including Ireland, Britain, the European Continent, North America, Australia, and South Africa. The Irish Hobby. Welsh Cob, Arabian, Thoroughbred and Irish Draught helped establish the modern Connemara and is one of the only pony breeds which have been represented in International horse shows, and have had Half Breds competing in the Olympics in both Dressage and Show Jumping.

The ponies would pull carts filled with seaweed, where it was used as fertilizer. They carried turf, cut from the bogs, which was used for cooking and heating the homes. Although the early development of the breed is somewhat obscure, the consensus is that the breed developed from Scandinavian ponies that the Vikings brought to the Connemara region in Ireland. Another likely source was the Irish Hobby a now-extinct breed established in Ireland prior to the 13th Century. Legend has it that the Spanish Armada ran ships aground in 1588 and the Spanish horses on board were let loose and bred with the local ponies.

These ponies roamed wild on the barren, mountainous landscapes in the western region of Ireland. The local farmers would capture and tame these ponies for use on the farm. Mares were often preferred, as they could not only help with the work on the farm, but also produce a foal each year. The ponies would pull carts filled with seaweed, where it was used as fertilizer. They carried turf, cut from the bogs, for cooking and heating the homes. The strongest mares were kept and bred, thus continued on page 9

In 1901 a study was conducted by Profession Ewart, M.D.F.R.S. of Edinburgh University to determine the conditions and possibilities of developing the Connemara Pony. The study recognized the need to have quality brood mares as well as quality sires located at indigenous stud farms the continue the best characteristics of the Connemara Ponies. The main focus was to increase bone without destroying the hardiness, stamina and temperament of the breed.

It wasn’t until 1923 that the Connemara Pony Breeders Society was formed did they act upon those suggestions. ponyies bred here in the U.S, have proved very successful in the show arena! One of the most notable was Hideaway’s Erin Go Bragh who won Groton Horse Trials against some of the best horses and riders of the time including Bruce Davidson, Mike Plumb, and Denny Emerson. He later went on to win AHSA’s Zone 2 Advanced Horse Trials Championship for 1995 and was awarded the USCTA Connemara of the Year. Seldom Seen, a Connemara Thoroughbred cross gelding well known for his successful show record with Lendon Gray, throughout the U.S. and Europe. Seldom Seen, was not the only Connemara cross bred to achieve Grand Prix wins however. Little Model finished 11th in the 1960 Olympic Games and earned bronze at the 1961 unofficial European Championships at Aachen, Germany. Other notable Connemara’s include “the littlest horse with the biggest heart” Little Squire who while only standing 13.2 won the Open Championship by clearing fences of seven feet at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY in 1939. Tommy Wade’s 15h Connemara gelding Dundrum was International Jumping Champion from 1959-1963. Stroller was a half bred who stood at 14.1h. Stroller ridden by Marium Coakes won the Silver Medal at the 1968 Olympics, being one of only two horses to jump clear in the entire Olympics! continued on page 12

The modern Connemara pony are known for their athleticism, versatility and good temperament. Elegant, hardy and intelligent with great agility and superb jumping ability. It is probably the best competition pony in the world.

“Dales have fantastic temperaments. They can be easier to sit than a lot of warmbloods, but they still have three, pure, quality gates, making them capable of upper level dressage.”

PQ Spotlight on the BREED Connemara continued

BREED STANDARD TEMPERAMENT: Mannerly and manageable, kind, responsive, possessing good sense and basic intelligence. TYPE: Rugged and sturdy; body compact, deep through the heart, with well-sprung rib cage and broad chest. ACTION: Straight and true both front and rear with free movement in the shoulders. Connemaras should move underneath themselves and should be surefooted, athletic, and clever, covering a lot of ground. Fairyhill Queen 2000 purebred mare, imported from Ireland

The modern Connemara pony are known for their athleticism, versatility and good temperament. Elegant, hardy and intelligent with great agility and superb jumping ability. It is probably the best competition pony in the world. The best of Irish bloodlines are represented in the United Sates, where the Connemara pony has been imported and carefully bred for more than fifty years. They really “Do It All” as the slogan says and can be found and excel in all competitions: eventing, combined driving, endurance and dressage. This sassy pony is valued as safe and steady fox hunters, pony club mount, therapy ponies, baby sitters and as best friends.

HEAD: Kind eye, head well shaped and balanced in proportion to the rest of the body; neck of good length and definition, meeting the shoulder smoothly. SHOULDERS: Long, well laid back, and with good slope. BACK: Strong and muscular; some length of back is normal in Connemaras, especially in mares. HINDQUARTERS: Well rounded and deep with good length from the point of the hip through the haunch; should balance the shoulders. BONE: Clean, hard, flat, proportionately substantial for height; forearms and gaskins long and muscular, cannons short and very dense. JOINTS: Large and well defined. FEET: Hard, strong

As we mentioned, Connemaras have achieved national and international fame. More recently, for example: Ballywhim Ardan Mor, Cashel’s Roch of Ages and Shammer Jake in dressage; Hideaway’s Erin Go Bragh, Take Time and Windswept in eventing; Och La La, Navigator and Oakfield’s Diamond in the pony hunters; Springledge Irish Whiskey and Blue Ridge Tiger in endurance; Thor’s Toy Truck, and Lisa Stroud’s four-in-hand in driving. The Connemara pony cannot be bettered. A strong and courageous partner with a big heart, whether in the show ring or the backyard, who ultimately becomes your friend!

©2016 Shawn McMillan

It was a week where dreams did come true for Caroline Passarelli, age 14, from High Falls, New York. Scheduled to ride Heritage Farm’s Blue Chip in the over fences division. Blue was under the weather, and Caroline was able to borrow News Flash from the owner Annabelle Sanchez. They proved to be a formidable pair in this spur-of-themoment parnership and Passarelli rode him to victory and secured the U.S. Pony Medal Finals Championship title! Pony Finals was founded in 1966, and according to the United States Equestrian Federation, an average of 600-800 ponies travel to the Kentucky Horse Park from all over the country to compete. Ponies and riders must qualify by winning a Champion or Reserve at any AA rated show or a Champion at any A rated show. Three Reserve Championships at A rated shows will also qualify a Pony Hunter.

Dressage

Dutch Ponies Rule

And Why I Love the National Dressage Pony Cup! BY JANIE PRIDE

I

Elle Turner, from Midland, Georgia with Ico, Janie Pride’s NRPS Dutch Pony at the National Dressage Pony Cup.

n 1996, I took a wonderful trip to Holland to look for a dressage pony. Little did I know that this trip would change my life in the dressage world.

I had been fortunate enough to meet the Dutch rider and trainer, Werner Geven, earlier in 1996 when he came to the USA (Georgia) to give a dressage clinic. I was incredibly impressed with his riding, his gracious personality, his ability to teach each rider in his/her own style and his sense of the horse. When I decided to look for a new pony, I knew that Werner was the only one I trusted to find the pony of my dreams. I am very small, so we knew that I wanted a small horse or a pony. It seems as though in America that “bigger is better” but Werner and I knew that we could find a very competitive small horse or

pony. What I didn’t know at the time was that I would come home with two ponies, and that the two I was to find would be so extremely talented and competitive! Werner had been training young riders on Mr. ALJ van Esch’s fabulous NRPS (Dutch Riding Pony and Horse Society) ponies from Erp, the Netherlands. We visited Mr. van Esch first. He showed us his stunning stallions, including the brilliant Idzard and a young NRPS stallion named Ilja, (by Idzard out of Oldert’s Karola by Oldert’s Fastwind). I fell in love with Ilja immediately and was astonished at his gaits. Ilja was only 2 years old and a stallion, neither of which I needed, but I was in love. Werner had another special pony, a 3-year-old NRPS gelding by Idzard out of Jasmijn, a KWPN mare by Olympic Cocktail.

We have made the trip to Kentucky for the Pony Cup nine times. When I first read about the Pony Cup all those years ago, I knew that this was the show for us! Now there is a show JUST for ponies. Each year we pack our bags and head for Lexington, KY.

A client had purchased him as a yearling for his 8-year-old daughter. Werner was so impressed by Ico’s outstanding temperament and gaits that he knew we had to see him. When I first saw Ico he was cute, small and fuzzy. I told Werner that he might not be what I was looking for, but he told me to “just wait”. He turned Ico out in the indoor arena, and the pony soared. He had this trot that took my breath away. He stole my heart! The ponies have had incredible successes in the show ring and have won many year end awards. The USDF All Breeds Awards, the USDF Horse of the Year, the Performance Horse Registry’s Silver Stirrups Awards and the Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association. continued on page 32

interviewed by Axel. They also offered a Young Pony Futurity and Dressage Sport Horse breeding classes during this year’s show. We would have entered the Young Pony Futurity, but Ilja is twenty two!! We love the awards offered at the Pony Cup! There are ribbons, wool coolers, cash awards, trophies, crystal vases and other goodies. Jenny and Tracy also pack special goody bags for competitors and ponies. The Awards’ Ceremony is so exciting. Everyone turns out in their best attire for photos, treasures and victory gallops. Jenny and Tracy have devised a special weighted system for dressage levels which creates a level playing field for ponies from Intro Level to the Grand Prix. This year Ilja was Champion FEI

We keep in touch during the year and make plans to stable together at the Pony Cup. We share in each other’s successes and mistakes. We’re always there to cheer each other on and scream and applaud for all rides. It’s a very special group. Jenny and Tracy also ad special touches to this event such as the Competitors’ Party and a Pony Cup line of attire. I must have ten Pony Cup t-shirts, caps, jackets and sweatshirts. Jenny also has special ribbons that look like ponies. I’ve been lucky enough to win two! Thank you Ico and Ilja. You have made all of my dressage dreams come true. PQ Product Review

www.nobleoutfitters.com By Sara Brooks

ummerhas reached its peak and it’s time again to look at some great products from Noble Outfitters! First up are the MUDS® Stay Cool 6-inch boots. While rubber boots and hot summer days don’t sound compatible; hear me out on this one. These boots are extremely lightweight, and they offer a lot of support. My biggest complaints about muck boots have always been that they’re heavy, they’re hot, and that after a couple of hours of wear, my feet are screaming in pain. This is absolutely not the case with the Noble Outfitters MUDS®, and I made sure to test them at the barn, on a rainy day, and even in my garden! They will keep your feet nice and cool while keeping the water out, and they come in a variety of cute colors in case vibrant footwear is more your style! I also recommend the Noble Outfitters Equissential Tote. My favorite feature of this grooming tote is the mesh compartments. Brushes collect dirt, which encourages bacteria and the potential for skin irritation.

However, the mesh pockets allow air to circulate through your brushes and grooming supplies, and for dirt to escape after long grooming sessions. Made with sturdy reinforcements to ensure that the tote keeps its shape, the Equissential Tote also has outside pockets big enough to fit fly spray or detangling products, and a Velcro pocket for treats or other small items that may need more protection from the elements (or roving pony noses!). This tote offers two strap options; a longer strap for overthe-shoulder or crossbody carrying, and a pair of shorter straps that you can easily grip with your hand. The tote also comes in black and 2 choices of vibrant color accents, now I ask, how can you go wrong? It’s a great time to inventory your equestrian products and equipment and if you’re in the market for a new tote, or just want to treat yourself to a great pair of boots, be sure to visit the Noble Outfitters website for the MUDS® Stay Cool 6-inch boots and Equissential Tote!

Your feet will feel nice and cool while keeping the water out. N.O. MUDS® come in black with dark green, teal or purple accents, in case vibrant footwear is more your style! ® Stay Cool 6-Inch Boot
