'Design Thinking' to 'Design Doing' Inspiration to Implementation
'Design Thinking' caught every businessman's interest. It taught industry to look into the life of the consumer; it brought them out to the customer and made them ask questions; it inspired businesses. 'Design Thinking' is all about inspiring solutions and breaking through cliche thinking. It is like a burst of fresh air in stale corridors. We designers know that as the first step in the design process, fresh design thinking can give you insights and crack even the toughest problems. It helps bring businesses all over world products and services that lead them to profit. But we know the next step too, and that's the step that takes some learning. It's called 'Design Doing'.

Designindia was founded in 2002. It was started as a platform for interaction for the design community in India and abroad. Over the years it has grown into a forum spread over many social and professional networking domains, linking design professionals into an active, interactive and thought leading community.
'Design Thinking' followed up by action by the management is getting results; this action is mostly not by designers, hence many managements still struggle with good insights. Action needs expert handling. This is where designers excel. Designers know how to bring 'Design Thinking' to life. Their training (which averages four years now) focuses on making ideas visible, and hence more actionable. Each 'Design Thinking' session must include designers who would then lead the 'Design Doing'. 'Design Thinking' workshops attended by company managements that have no designers are futile, as they are bound to result in no action, or action that is not well guided enough. For professional designers inspiration is already a part of doing. Sudhir

PARKING SPACES FOR ART Kanika Anand, Creative Director of Parked, talks about this unique platform for pop-up art exhibitions in India After eight years of working with private galleries and scenography studios, I decided to launch a pop-up exhibition platform that created wider access, as well as an interest in contemporary art in India. ‘Parked’ was born this summer, with the simple idea to park art in all kinds of spaces. Observing the dwindling number of people visiting galleries or museums today, opting instead to frequent the newest restaurant or head to see the latest movie, the exhibition platform was a way of positioning art in familiar settings with heightened engagement. If people were not going to see art, why not take art to the people? Breaking away from the tried-and-tested format of presenting art in a white cube space wasn’t easy but after the one too many introductions where I had to explain the role of an art curator, I didn’t think I was at risk of losing much! I first trained as an art curator in New York, at the highbrow Gagosian Gallery 10 POOL #64

Multidisciplinary design
A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE Piyush Bhandari and Tuhin Roy, Founders and Creative Directors of Bangalore-based JUMPINGGOOSE®, hope to give an innovative, creative twist to design in daily life
How did you two team up? P&T: We both studied Fashion and Lifestyle Design at NIFT (Piyush at Gandhinagar, and Tuhin at Hyderabad) and met during our corporate stints with fashion and retail giants. Both of us are passionate about design and all things creative. When we lost our jobs due to the global financial meltdown, we decided to give a positive spin to this setback. Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, we believed that things that were happening with and around us were not random but our ‘calling’. A lost job did not deter our spirit or belief in the talent we had to offer. 14 POOL #64

A FINE BALANCE Studio Kohl’s Mira Malhotra prefers to apply her design skills for clients who are game-changers in their field
Where did your interest in graphic design take root? MM: I have always been interested in the visual arts and was drawing from a very early age. Admittedly it also had a lot to do with being exposed to a certain type of visual communication from an early age. I grew up in Saudi Arabia and there wasn’t much to do there besides going to shopping centers and supermarkets, or watching TV. We didn’t get to attend cultural events, shows, dances and so I wasn’t exposed to much of the other arts. I did watch a generous amount of cartoons, sitcoms and children’s shows like the original Sesame Street. However I was exposed to a lot of packaging, and till date packaging is one of my favorite things to design. We always had a lot of interestingly made products in the house, whether it was the packaging of candy or Doofles (bags that looked like characters), and all these things I feel contributed to what I eventually chose for my career. I went on to do a B.F.A. Applied Arts (Illustration) from the University of Mumbai, and later a PGDPD Graphic Design from National Institute of Design. From there to Studio Kohl…how has the journey been? MM: It has been a lot of trial and error to come to this stage. I never came into this field thinking I would work 22 POOL #64

LIVING IMPRESSIONS Bangalore-based freelance illustrator Archana Sreenivasan is most comfortable recreating images from the natural world
Were you always drawn to illustration? AS: I remember drawing being an immersive experience right from my early years, but it was only when I discovered art college that it took a turn into the professional space. Even after art college and design school (I have a PG Diploma in Animation Film Design from National Institute of Design), it still took many years of trying different design jobs before I came home to illustration. The journey has been a long, winding one, and being an illustrator comes with its challenges, but I know that this is the path that I’m interested in, and that gives me the motivation and energy to face the challenges. 50  POOL #64

PRODUCTS WITH PURPOSE Akhil Mane and Kalpesh Mahajan recently launched Deniable Studio to create products that merge the esthetics of art with the functionality of architecture
What is an ideal product in your view? A&K: Empathy is essential to design, but the desire to be liked is not necessary in a product. A product is not meant to push technical skill sets to the limit or to fulfill the conspicuous expectations of users. Most often it is physically expressed as functional, and visually as esthetical. We use a product as a mode of interaction with the user instead of merely looking impressive. More than look the character should have a sense of purpose. Necessity, simplicity and order should be served well. Tell us something about yourselves. A&K: We are both architects and designers from Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai. Akhil loves to explore the impact of volumetric space on the user. His core interest understands design theorists, cognitive science, and parametricism, and his primary concern is usability and efficiency in design. Kalpesh is into design detailing, innovative materials and sustainability. To him designing 56  POOL #64
