‘Smart Designers’ They don’t just make the world look cool - some designers go further. They improve the environment, build communities, even save lives. They have great skills, and even greater ideas. They are concerned with how the world behaves and not just how the world looks. ‘Design Thinking’ has been very widely adopted by business and industry as a creative process tool to improve the real world and help boost productivity. Non-designers are also using the tool to face challenges in their everyday life/work scenarios.

It’s time now for ‘Smart Designers’ who take this creativity to much broader briefs such as social impact, health care, and environmental sustainability.

So, how do you recognize Smart Designers? They tend to be:

facebook.com/poolmag twitter.com/poolmagazine instagram.com/indi.pool

1. Extremely skilled: in drawing, sketching, articulating, model making, materials, etc. 2. Extremely connected: with a presence on social media, blogs, networks. 3. Very well read: everything from politics, geography and history to fiction, technology and economics is on their list.

Designindia was founded in 2002. It was started as a platform for interaction for the design community in India and abroad. Over the years it has grown into a forum spread over many social and professional networking domains, linking design professionals into an active, interactive and thought leading community.

4. Extremely human: empathy is natural for them. 5. Multiexperts: Usually have another stream of expertise besides design. I think you will like the ‘Smart Designer’ featured on the cover of this issue - he is certainly a ‘Designer++’. Sudhir

PUBLICATION

Rukminee Guha Thakurta has made an indelible mark for herself in the world of publication design

Passion for print I studied Graphic Design at NID, chose to work with print and tried my hand at everything from newspaper design, exhibitions and identities to books and magazines. I love the printing process: the smell of paper and printing inks at the press, and watching images form with each impression of the four-color process. I worked at Steidl Verlag in Germany where I experienced the best of collaborative design and fine printing, and ever since I’ve been known as a book designer. But, I’d call myself a graphic designer really. I had been working in New Delhi at Photoink – a photo agency and design studio then – for a number of years when they decided to go through a change of identity in 2009. It didn’t make sense for the new gallery to also run a design studio and design for other galleries. I was heading the design studio there and we came to a comfortable decision that I’d continue to design all of Photoink’s exhibition material in exchange for the space which I continued to use for my work. So, I started my design studio, Letterpress, and nothing really changed till Photoink moved to another space. That was when I too moved my studio.

KEYNOTE

Dr. Naushad Forbes makes a strong case for giving greater priority to design in Indian industry. Excerpts from his inaugural talk at the recently held CII-NID India Design Summit in Hyderabad. Design is the way in which companies progress, the way in which companies move up the value chain, and the world gets great products. As you know, great products are ‘and’ products. Great products are beautiful and functional. They are elegant and simple. They are high quality and accessible to a wide strata of the population. It is the task of great design to deliver on that ‘and’. Elegance with simplicity, beauty with functionality, and high quality with accessibility to all. There are many great things that are happening in design in our country - at NID, within CII, within IIT Hyderabad and indeed within some of our most progressive governments around the country, which are using design in an explicit and tangible way to improve the lives of their populations. But without question we have to do a lot more. Given that design has a huge potential to contribute to the success of our firms, and to the lives of our people, what are the kind of things that we should be thinking about to enable design to have the kind of impact on the country that it needs to have? I will very quickly cover five topics: scale, the quality of design, the quality of design education, how do we raise the priority for design in Industry, and how should we be thinking about design for public purpose. 24  POOL #91
