‘Designer’ Label There is a lot of confusion in the market about who is a designer and who is not. There are many people with no design education, formal or informal, who label themselves as designers just because they use the same tools as creative professionals. This is not a new issue - it is as old as the use of pirated design software in the market. Hobbyists and amateurs want the same respect and recognition as Industry professionals and quite blatantly market themselves as Industry professionals.

Designindia was founded in 2002. It was started as a platform for interaction for the design community in India and abroad. Over the years it has grown into a forum spread over many social and professional networking domains, linking design professionals into an active, interactive and thought leading community.
Now, it is not about talent or pedigree or pretension but about market confusion. It is becoming difficult for the Industry to understand the value of established designers and distinguish them from talented creators with little or no experience. This has direct impact on the employability and cost/value of professional designers. Experienced professionals will tell you how often they hear “You are too expensive” or “I can get the same thing done on the internet for H 5000”. Certifications and degrees are often not enough to create the distinction of being a professional. Saturation of design demand in the Indian market will bring the value of professional design further down. There is a need for an authority such as the India Design Council to step in and create a clear distinction between professional designers and enthusiastic hobbyists. Sudhir

COVER STORY
While Lakshmi Shewale has always been a painter, she credits her evolution into an artist to a painful brush with clinical depression. ILLUSTRATOR
After a long stint in animation, freelance artist Sukanto Debnath is finding his voice through varied work for diverse clients Couples and cellphones
How did your tryst with art begin? SD: I have been drawing or painting since childhood. It was the only thing that I was kind of good at, and loved doing. I just wanted to be an artist, an easel painter. When I went to study Fine Art at Viswabharati University, Santiniketan, I chose painting as a major. But then I discovered a few books in the library, especially one by Heinrich Kley and a book on drawings for animation - that changed everything and got me thinking about animation instead. I sketched a lot at Santiniketan, even for my paintings. We also had live-drawing and painting classes. Just being there for five years was an experience...it is a beautiful place, near the villages of the lovely Santali people that I was able to sketch. Two years of sculpting a little, trying design on textile in the preparatory classes, living in the hostel with friends, music, campfires, study tours...everything made me what I am today. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still choose Santiniketan and painting over any animation or technical school. 20  POOL #95

THEATER
Nayantara Kotian and Prashant Prakash, director and artiste respectively, came together ten years ago to start an immersive theater company that has completely changed the way audiences experience theater
How did your tryst with theater begin? PP: It began in St. Xavier’s College (Mumbai) around 2004-05. I decided to audition for a play at Ithaca, which was our English Literature department festival. I got through and ended up acting in a production of Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs. That was the first taste, and I knew instantly that I wanted more. I did a couple of more plays while I was in college, including co-writing and directing a one-act play. In 2006 I met Atul Kumar, director of The Company Theatre. He was starting work on a new production, which I got involved in as an actor. This was a devised theater piece and it involved a six-month process of coming together every day in a professional
environment, workshopping, improvising, writing, researching, etc. It was a very valuable learning experience for me - I knew I had found something then that I wanted to sink my teeth further into. After this project I did another play with TCT before moving on to found my own company, Quaff Theatre, along with Nayantara and Kalki Koechlin. In 200809, Kalki and I co-wrote a play called The Skeleton Woman. Nayantara ended up directing this, with Kalki and me acting. This was my first time working with Nayantara, who was a pretty reputed documentary film maker, when I pulled her down into the sordid world of the theater! The play won the Hindu MetroPlus Playwright Award in 2009,
