PORT OF TYNE
WELCOME TO THE TYNE TRANSFORMED...
The Port of Tyne is one of the world’s most innovative, dynamic and efficient deep-sea ports handling goods and cargo from five continents. Backed by a multi-million and multi-year investment programme, the Port is forging a path as a centre of excellence for the UK, as we decarbonise, electrify, automate and digitise our future. The investments have delivered a step-change in handling capacity, have modernised the Port’s international container and ferry terminals, and enhanced the quality of on-site machinery.
“The Port of Tyne is not just a Port for today, we’re a Port for the future” Matt Beeton, CEO

Using the Port’s dedicated Maritime Innovation Hub, and building on long-standing contracted customer relationships with Drax, Lynemouth Power Limited (“LPL”), DFDS, Tata, BG Freight, Nissan UK, Audi, VW, Komatsu, Equinor and SSE, the Port is implementing its transformational vision to be the UK’s first smart port, to be carbon neutral by 2030 and to lead the industry in innovation and collaboration. Ideally located at the centre of a network of global supply chains, and close to the North Sea offshore wind farm development areas, the Port of Tyne is increasing the reach of SMEs and blue chip companies in the growth sectors of advanced green energy
manufacturing, battery development and electric automotive centres. The deep water, combined with heavy lift quay facilities, significant storage areas and an existing heavy industry skills base, are the vital ingredients ensuring that the River Tyne continues to be the port-of-choice for a thriving offshore wind and sub-sea cluster. The Port is already the home port of Nissan and its many ‘green’ models, as well as the O&M base for the largest offshore wind farm development area in the world for Equinor / SSE. In addition, it is an integral part of Drax and LPL’s renewable fuel supply chain. As part of this clean energy revolution, the Port of Tyne has created a 200acre development platform ‘Tyne Clean Energy Park’ – much with attached deep-sea, quay-side access – to ensure that green manufacturers have the tools to innovate and develop during the coming years.
The Port is the only UK member of the global Connected Ports Group – a data-sharing initiative to decrease emissions, improve supply chain EDINBURGH NEWCASTLE BELFAST efficiency and drive forward innovation.

THE OPPORTUNITY: TYNE CLEAN ENERGY PARK The Port has created Tyne Clean Energy Park – a 200-acre platform for immediate development. This unique land opportunity is strategically located adjacent to a deep-water quay of up to 13.5m close to the mouth of the Tyne, with unrestricted beam, height and length and supported by many blue chip organisations both on the River Tyne and in the region. £35m has been invested to date and site clearance is well underway. The Port is looking to enter long-term lease arrangements with high-quality counterparties to service rapidly expanding green energy markets as companies look to drive up
their UK content or to support other suitable markets with a clear decarbonisation roadmap. The land needs little remediation and benefits from financial incentives and streamlined planning through two Enterprise Zones, which helps to lower developer risk by increasing the speed of delivery. The rental opportunity associated with these strategic locations is significant, as customers and inward investors seek to establish long term bases to support green UK investment.
Driven by innovation and a clear vision, we’re pioneering a more sustainable future, with our new Tyne Clean Energy Park and as base for the world’s biggest windfarm. Port of Tyne is promoting the green agenda and leading the way towards sustainability and a net zero economy.

PORT OF TYNE
Container Growth: The business has experienced a period of sustained growth in container volumes. Congested Channel ports and the move to reduce carbon emissions mean there is a growing opportunity for North Sea facing ports to gain further market share. The Port has already received direct calls from the Far East and delivered many new domestic container trains. There is strong interest from international shippers and forwarders to inject greater resilience and decarbonise supply chains. The Port is responding by investing over £10m in the terminal to streamline container train operations and increase terminal capacity by 60%.
Green Advanced Manufacturing and Bulks: There is continued development of the automotive hub at Nissan and the nearby International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP). This, alongside the location of two automotive battery gigafactories within the region, mean that the Port will play a central role as manufacturers look to move their raw materials in and finished products out to international markets rapidly.
Offshore Renewables: The Port is geographically well placed for a number of offshore wind development areas identified by the Crown Estate – including the significant Dogger Bank. This is likely to lead to opportunities initially in design, manufacturing and construction, but also in service and maintenance. Interest has been strong from a range of international businesses looking to establish UK manufacturing operations including monopiles, cable, plus service facilities including O&M and commissioning.
