“OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH BT AND ERICSSON TO CREATE OUR OWN PRIVATE 5G NETWORK WILL UNLOCK OUR POTENTIAL AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE IN THE INDUSTRY AND A DRIVER OF GROWTH IN OUR REGION.” Matthew Beeton Chief Executive Officer, Port of Tyne

INTRODUCTION

OUR 5G VISION... When we launched our Tyne 2050 strategy we set out our intentionally ambitious vision as a major logistics hub and a thriving offshore and manufacturing cluster. Technology is, of course, key to delivering this vision and Tyne 2050 has always had innovation and technology at its heart. Our partnership with BT and Ericsson to create our own private 5G network - a first for the UK ports sector - is another major step forward and one which will unlock our potential as a catalyst for change in the industry and a driver of growth in our region. We’re already working hard to exploit this potential as we make the Port a safer, smarter, more efficient and more sustainable operation for all our colleagues. With wireless connectivity across the site our communication and collaboration will be better and faster, whilst technologies such as automated container inspections are helping us to develop even safer and more efficient workflows. The digitisation that 5G is enabling across the Port is providing some fantastic opportunities for colleagues to learn new technologies and skills, whilst also allowing them to explore new ways of working as we tackle some of the key challenges across our business. 5G is also helping us to deliver for our customers. Ultra fast connectivity means that we can monitor operations and gather data more quickly, allowing us to track vessels and cargo in real-time and increasing our ability to streamline and improve our operations. This will not only make us more efficient, but also lower emissions and energy consumption and reduce our carbon footprint, in line with our Tyne 2050 sustainability goals.

Our investment in 5G also has the potential to revolutionise the way that we think about our business in future with autonomous vessels, asset tracking, predictive maintenance, connected sensors, real-time data processing, automation and robotics just some of the exciting developments on the horizon. With a network 100 times faster than 4G and nearly instantaneous latency, 5G can also facilitate greater collaboration across the industry, seamlessly connecting shipping companies, logistics providers and other stakeholders, as we work together to tackle global issues such as climate change and cybersecurity. As we look to the future, it’s clear that this major investment in our infrastructure will deliver entirely new possibilities both for the Port and for the maritime industry, facilitating our drive for innovation and growth and cementing our vision to be a safer, smarter and more sustainable business – truly a ‘Port for the Future’.

OUR PA R T N E R S

ERICSSON The partnership between BT, Ericsson and the Port of Tyne signifies a groundbreaking vision for the maritime industry’s future with 5G technology. This collaboration envisions a seamless integration of cutting-edge 5G infrastructure, fostering unprecedented operational efficiencies and safety measures within the port’s activities. 5G: THE FOUNDATION FOR BUILDING A NEXT-GENERATION PORT As the UK’s Maritime 2050 strategy acknowledges the importance of achieving sustainable growth in maritime activities, enhancing port efficiency, and embracing digitalization the significance of connectivity cannot be overstated. It stands as the vital essence of modern port functionality, facilitating seamless communication and driving technological advancement. Serving as the fundamental cornerstone, 5G connectivity plays an vital role in enabling efficient, intelligent, and secure port activities.

OUR MISSION: EFFICIENT, SUSTAINABLE, END-TO-END MARITIME SERVICES Amidst the ever-changing market conditions in recent years, the Port of Tyne has strategically positioned itself for continued success by keeping its focus on providing efficient, sustainable, and comprehensive logistics services, while supporting the talent and technology required to deliver them. Recognizing that a seamless and dependable network forms the bedrock of integrated port operations, establishing a robust wireless framework became imperative, and in this regard, 5G technology perfectly aligned. Collaborating alongside BT and Ericsson, the Port of Tyne will gain expanded digital capabilities through an independent cellular network and open new opportunities to lead maritime innovation. To keep offering worldclass service to its customers and a safe, modern workplace to its employees, the Port of Tyne has invested in a private 5G network as the foundation of its digital infrastructure.

OUR PARTNERS

BT We’re one of the world’s leading communications services companies. The solutions we sell are integral to modern life. Our purpose is as simple as it is ambitious: we connect for good. There are no limits to what people can do when they connect. And as technology changes our world, connections are becoming even more important to everyday life. Today, that’s truer than ever. The connections we make are helping solve the world’s biggest challenges such as the global pandemic, climate change and cyber security. Through the power of technology, we’re supporting customers to live, work and play together better.

supply chain and shipping, as well as boosting productivity through the smooth running of the port’s operations. Belfast Harbour is also an excellent example of where our solutions are driving real value. We have delivered a range of solutions including a public app helping those that work, live and play move about at transport peak times, while also informing executives as to the live Air Quality Index across the Titanic Quarter – seeing a direct impact of how the unloading of Coal and other dusty aggregates permeates across the quays allows for corrective measure to be implemented and measured all with the ultimate aim of improving Air Quality.

It’s useful to think of a UK port as a complex, layered, mechanical ecosystem. Like Amazonian rainforests, they support thousands of interconnected organisms and activities, with each layer supporting the next and vital to the overall health of the biotope, the wellbeing of fellow-inhabitants, and the sustainability of the wider environment. Every layer is driven by advanced digital capabilities, with security, surveillance and safety, our smart solutions at Belfast Harbour devices have delivered real-time intelligence enabling the smarter port to boost its own operations. That in turn attracts investment, builds impetus for expansion, creates new jobs and brings money into the local area. The ecosystem breathes, grows, and supports life outside of its physical boundaries.

Our solutions are bridging the gap between the knowledge of what is thought to be going on vs what is actually happening. Capturing and processing data help executives and operations teams make better, informed decisions about how to improve, optimise and maximise their operations leading to high efficiencies and improved operating profit margins. Technology is also positively impacting people by keeping them safer and removing them from dangerous operating environments, after all a machine is replaceable.

Port of Tyne is a perfect example of the way a port’s transformation is intimately connected to the regeneration of the wider area. BT is working with the Port of Tyne and Ericsson to build a state-of-the art 5G ecosystem within the port. The immediate goal is to create operational efficiencies, optimising processes across transport, logistics, the

The UK Governments Maritime 2050 strategy published in 2019 has seven key themes including: Competitive Advantage, Environment, Infrastructure, People, Security, Technology and Trade. Our solutions have been developed to support this important strategy; we have something to offer in each category most of which have been answered at Port of Tyne and Belfast Harbour. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your own business challenges…
