UNIQUELY PORTAGE COUNTY – NEW COMMUNITY GUIDE TO CONVEY THAT Sense of Place Sense of place. It’s the feeling you get when you are part of a community; that sense of belonging and identification where individuals feel they are part of something “bigger”. The sense of satisfaction that comes from people contributing to “their community”. For many of us, the Portage County community fills us with that sense of place. The Portage County Business Council (PCBC) is now accepting advertising contracts for the new 2015 Community Guide – Uniquely Portage County. Utilized as a community reference guide, business and workforce recruitment tool and informational relocation publication, the Community Guide features advertising from companies that choose to do business here. From cover positions to half-page ads, quarter page ads, mini displays and more, ad space is available in numerous sizes and rates to fit most budgets. Sections on business and industry, education, health & wellness, community life, housing, transportation, recreation, entertainment and hospitality and others will be incorporated to convey that unique sense of place. While the concept of this guide isn’t new to the Business Council, what’s new is that the publication will be designed “in-house” and will feature a refreshing writing style, coupled with intriguing photo’s that capture the distinct character of the community. A photo contest is underway with winning photos and captions to be featured within the guide. Designing the guide ourselves, then producing the final piece locally allows us to oversee and produce a piece that represents Portage County and captures that sense of

place.

Six thousand copies of the guide will be distributed over the next two years providing long-term exposure in a high profile publication. Advertising in the Community Guide goes beyond the print publication to include: 50 word listing in the directory section of the guide Minimum of two social media shout-outs annually Availability to view and access on the Business Council website On-the-go wireless access via various webenabled devices Copies will be included in relocation packets, and peppered throughout the community in high traffic locations in Portage County such as real estate offices, hotels, banks, hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices, as well as during some of our events. Advertisers will also receive copies of the guide to have on hand at their place of business. An electronic version is also featured on our website, www. portagecountybiz.com. Packets with advertising materials are in the mail. Review the advertising brochure included in the mailing and commit to your ad size of choice. Then complete the Advertising Contract and Ad Submission Forms and return to the Portage County Business Council along with your payment on or before April 10, 2015. For the past 27 years, Houlihan has served as the Managing Editor of The Badger Common’Tater magazine, the official voice of the Wisconsin potato and vegetable industry. During that time, he also held the title of Communications Director. A 1985 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Houlihan has a Bachelor’s Degree with a doublemajor in Communication and German. He received the Chancellor’s Leadership Award and the Albertson Medallion at UWSP. He worked as the Sports Editor and News Editor at the Rhinelander Daily News before joining the WPVGA in 1987. At the WPVGA, Houlihan received a Distinguished Service Award in 1997; the President’s Award in 2001 and in 2015; the Agri-Communicator Award in 2008; and the Wisconsin Seed Potato Industry Leadership Award in 2011. A roundtable series of meetings that allows business owners and their employees the opportunity to discuss pertinent topics, learn from local industry leaders and, most importantly, learn from each other.

TOPIC: “Farming, Conservation and Preservation” In June of 2012, the Wysocki Family submitted plans for a 3,500 cow dairy to be located in the Town of Saratoga in south Wood County on land formerly owned by a paper company for production of their raw product. The plan was met with great resistance. Gary will share the plan, how a Dairy integrates with row crop farming in the Central Sands of Wisconsin, and the past and ongoing challenges of the project.

STEVENS POINT COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATE The City of Stevens Point is in the process of updating its 2006 comprehensive plan. The comprehensive plan is an essential tool used to make land use decisions. COLLECTIVE IMPACT – A MODEL TO SOLVE COMPLEX SOCIAL PROBLEMS Solving issues like ensuring students succeed after graduation and local businesses have enough skilled workers to meet their needs will take the entire Portage County community working together, collectively. As we take on challenging issues the Collective Impact model can serve as a guide. Collective Impact is the commitment of individuals/groups from different sectors coming together to solve complex social problems utilizing a common agenda. It is more rigorous and specific than collaboration among organizations. The five conditions for successful Collective Impact are: • Common Agenda: All participants share a vision for change that includes a common understanding of the problem and a joint approach to solving the problem through agreed-upon actions. • Shared Measurement: All participating organizations agree on the ways success will be measured and reported, with a short list of common indicators identified and used for learning and improvement. • Mutually Reinforcing Activities: A diverse set of stakeholders, typically across sectors, coordinate a set of differentiated activities through a mutually reinforcing plan of action. • Continuous Communication: All players engage in frequent and structured open communication to build trust, assure mutual objectives, and create common motivation. • Backbone Support: An independent, funded staff dedicated to the initiative provides ongoing support by guiding the initiative’s vision and strategy, supporting aligned activities, establishing shared measurement practices, building public will, advancing policy, and mobilizing resources. • Information taken from: http://www.fsg.org/OurApproach/ WhatIsCollectiveImpact.aspx

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION - FEBRUARY ACTIVITIES February was a busy month for Partners In Education with over 340 students participating in various PIE activities. Check out what we have been up to: • Jr. Reality Shop at St. Peter Middle School: On February 20, 2015 fifty 7th grade students experienced what it is like to balance a monthly family budget at the Jr. Reality Shop. • Etiquette Smetiquette at Rosholt High School: Fifty-six 10th graders learned about and practiced etiquette basics on February 24, 2015. • Here’s What I Do at Ben Franklin Jr. High: Over 145 8th graders learned about modern day guilds and apprenticeships on February 24, 2015 in their social studies classes. • Career Conversations at SPASH: Fashion merchandising students at SPASH learned about fashion from a former models perspective on February 25, 2015. • Soft Skills for Success at UWSP: Over 80 UWSP students were introduced to the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator during their Oral Communications class. The MBTI sessions provided a foundation for future discussions on communication, conflict resolution and leadership. • Spread the Word at SentryWorld: On February 16, 2015 Brigitta Altmann (SPASH) and Judy Rannow (PIE) presented information on PIE programs and Youth Apprenticeships to SentryWorld management.

FEBRUARY LPC SESSION FOCUSES ON INFRASTRUCTURE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT On February 19, 2015 LPC participants learned about infrastructure and economic development. The day began with session leader Jeff Schuler outlining what to expect throughout the day. After the overview, several participants gave speeches. The rest of the morning was dedicated to learning about Portage County infrastructure (sewer, water, roads, solid waste and recycling). Prior to lunch the participants toured the transit facility. After lunch, the participants discussed various interim assignments and provided an update on their group projects. The afternoon provided participants an opportunity to learn about economic development from various perspectives. The day ended with a brief presentation on assertiveness and strategic leadership. LPC ALUMNI LETTER Dear LPC Alumni, The 2014/2015 class of Leadership Portage County (LPC) is in full swing, and the class is, by all indications, very much enjoying the program. The enthusiasm and openness of the current LPC participants for the program content and experience motivates us to reach out to LPC Alums to bring you up to date with the positive rejuvenation this important program is undergoing. In July 2014, Judy Rannow became Portage County Business Council Director of Workforce Development, and head of LPC. Through the hard work of a lot of different people, including former LPC grads, we were able to field a class of 19. The LPC Leadership Committee, also made up of Alums, was reconvened to review our overall Mission/Vision/Values, as well as thoroughly vet and validate the LPC course outline for content and overall scope, based on our M/V/V. We truly believe all of this work has positioned us for a successful year in ‘14/’15, with great prospects for additional program growth moving forward. As it turned out, we ended up with a list of candidates for 2015/2016 as well! The LPC program is more relevant than ever, and we will continue to work to fine tune program content based on current community issues and perceived areas of need for enhanced leadership. This is where you come in, as “fine tuning” and “improvement” are concepts that apply to past LPC grads as well. You recently received a letter from Director Rannow to reintroduce herself and reconnect with former program participants. We are reaching out to you today as well to encourage you to reestablish a connection with this important piece of community building. Your ideas, energy, and yes, your support, will be very important for taking LPC to the next level. We would love to hear about your

experiences since you completed the program, and what needs you have, or topics you might be interested in, to gain or maintain your edge and value as a community leader. In the near future we will be reaching out with ideas and opportunities for helping you become a part, again, of an organization and experience that we hope you found beneficial in your public and personal lives. As is evidenced from our journey to this point, Leadership Portage County has its chance for greatest success through continued, and expanded, participation of Alumni in the process moving forward. PORTAGE COUNTY GIFT CERTIFICATES Purchasing Portage County gift certificates continues to be a successful way to “Buy Local”. Portage County gift certificates make great gifts. Gift certificates can be purchased at area banks, credit unions, the Convention and Visitors Bureau or at our office. They can be used at any business with a Portage County address and are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 & $100. The PCBC would like to thank everyone who participates for helping make the program successful.
