LEADERSHIP PORTAGE COUNTY KICKS OFF 2015-2016 YEAR! Leadership Portage County – From Our Perspective Written by Justin Adamski and Ryan Ourada
The 2015/2016 Leadership Portage County group commenced with an opening retreat held on Thursday, August 20 at the Portage County Business Council and Friday, August 21, 2015 at Schmeekle Reserve. We met at the Portage County Business Council for an introduction with Judy Rannow, Director of Workforce Development, Todd Kuckkahn, Interim Executive Director, and a group of LPC Alumni. We were all greeted with enthusiasm by the staff and alumni as we had a chance to participate in different group exercises.
Bus Pick up at Great Northern Distilling 1740 Park Ave | Plover, WI 54467
Our various backgrounds and experiences allowed for engaging and informative conversations. We also spent time learning about the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) and Motivational Value Systems (MVS) personality test. Having completed these prior to the meeting, we participated in a dialogue about how these outcomes pertain to our work and personal lives as well as our leadership styles.
BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
We also engaged in exercises to show how our personalities interact with others in our life when things are going well and when we are in conflict. The second half of the day our group was honored to be educated by Anton Anday on his infamous bus tour highlighting the history, culture, and landmarks around Portage County.

WINES OF THE WORLD Friday, October 30, 2015 \\ 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
On Friday, we started our day at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center on the UWSP campus, and continued our opening retreat activities. After completing a number of team building exercises, it was evident this highly engaging group was quickly coming together as a group of leaders. We learned about different types of leadership styles and how we utilize them in different situations. The highlight of the day for the group was the road rally, which is essentially a scavenger hunt that challenged us to identify, find, and photograph different businesses and landmarks located throughout Portage County. After we returned to Schmeeckle, we unanimously agreed that we had matured as a group. The laughter coming from different corners of the room and the group as a whole was evidence the team building exercises had been a success, getting to know each other on a more personal and professional level. We are all looking forward to our September gathering!

THE PINERIES BANK 3601 Main Street Stevens Point, WI 54481 (715)341-5600 rgadbois@pineries.com
The Pineries Bank was founded in January of 1997 and has been a member of The Portage County Business Council since that time. Many of our bank’s staff have volunteered and participated in a large volume of Business Council events during those 18 years. The bank currently employs 10 full-time equivalents. The bank has also been structured as an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) which provides employees an ownership interest in the bank. Our bank’s motto is “Because Your Life Is More Than Just A Formula”. The bank emphasizes providing superior quality service on both the loan and deposit side of the business. Most importantly our bank specializes in creating relationships with our customers that provide for more traditional one-on-one contact by phone and/or in person or online banking. The bank prides itself on making decisions locally and looking outside of the numbers when making decisions on loan approvals. Our staff’s knowledge of our market and their ability to customize relationships creates a niche in the Central Wisconsin market which is often imitated but seldom duplicated. Founder and President, Paul Adamski, has been mentoring his daughter Rachael Gadbois, Executive Vice President, his son Justin P. Adamski, Assistant Vice President, and other long term employees of the bank to provide succession management for our business in the future. The succession management plan that is currently in place will ensure that the bank will continue to be locally owned and operated and not just a branch of a bigger organization. When asked what three words we would use to describe the Portage County Business Council our bank staff selected: “Community”, making Portage County a better place to live. “Leadership”, creates networking and leadership venues for many to pursue. “Involvement”, the numerous businesses that the PCBC brings together at different business and social venues during the year.

Don readily embraces change, and is constantly looking to improve his farming operation with the latest, state-ofthe-art technology and equipment. His irrigation systems are all operated remotely with control panels at the farm’s headquarters. His packaging shed utilizes a Lectro-Tek automatic sizer and an x-ray machine for hollow heart detection.

Hamerski Farms was the first farm in the Midwest to use the Fuji Ace robotic palletizer, which can handle as much as 20 bags per minute and can lift up to 400 pounds. Title of Presentation: “The Power of Positive Influence” About Our Program: Every day, we are surrounded by people, places, and things that carry negativity and pessimism. Sometimes, it feels as if we can't surpass them. This is normal! We all know how this feels. The question is...Why are some people able to rise above? Why do some people always seem to finish on top? Why do things always seem to work out for some people? There is one thing these people have in common...and it is something each of us have the power to control in our own lives. It is The Power of Positive Influence.
Guest Speaker: Kelly Greig, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones
About Our Speaker: Kelly Greig runs a successful business as a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones. She focuses on helping clients meet their financial goals through communication and education. She received her BA from Cal State San Bernardino and received her MBA in Marketing from UW Whitewater. Helping those around her is a critical component in Kelly’s daily life. She is currently serving her second year as the President for the Antigo Rotary Club. She is also actively involved in horse rescue through grant writing, donations, and equine foster care. Kelly is also a proud mother of 3 amazing children, ages 13, 10, and 3. Having an autistic son has taught her how to be the best mother she can be, and has shown her what life is really all about. Having gone through 2 divorces, and raising her children alone has forced her to become strong and resilient. Through her successes and her failures, Kelly has remained hopeful that others around her will realize that they, too, can overcome. She is passionate about being a positive influence to all those she comes in contact with every day of her life.

The primary objective of the Roundtables is to bring participants from non-competing industries together to share best practices and offer ideas on improving business performance through cooperative interaction. Each group is self-led, prioritizing issues and developing its own agenda. Groups meet monthly with the determination on date/time established by each group. Groups meet monthly with the determination on date/time established by each group. Limited to 8 - 10 owners, CEO’s, COO’s / CFO’s or primary decision-makers in various positions, each group is carefully selected through an application process, to complement each other’s businesses and add value to the discussions. If groups are not full, registrants will be invited to participate in a "blended" group that includes individuals from two or more different role-specific roundtables, in non-competing industries. Once a specific group has enough registrants to launch a group, we will adjust accordingly. As a participant, you will: • Receive advice from other business owners and executives facing the same challenges as you; fellow leaders who have “been there, done that” will offer support and the benefit of the lessons they learned along the way • Share your insights, hot tips, and successful strategies with your peers • Engage with others in an exclusive and private environment • Test your ideas with your group and get instant feedback to avoid costly mistakes and build encouragement and confidence to move forward Facilitators will help keep meetings on track, assist in guiding discussions and assure each meeting is productive, focused and informative. The following Roundtable groups are being formed: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ROUNDTABLE - Participants are responsible for overall business/client development efforts for their company. CEO ROUNDTABLE - Owners of small, mid-size, and large companies placed with owners of similarly sized companies. COO / CFO ROUNDTABLE - Top-level operations executives who are responsible for profit and loss, but do not have ownership of their organizations. HUMAN RESOURCES ROUNDTABLE - Senior level managers who are responsible for overseeing all HR responsibilities for their companies. NON-PROFIT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ROUNDTABLE - Executive directors of not-for-profit (501 (c) (3)). SALES MANAGER ROUNDTABLE - Manager of a sales team who directly assists the company’s executive management. SMALL BUSINESS OWNER ROUNDTABLE - Owner of a small business; typically sole proprietors. Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis. Click HERE to complete the application. Click HERE to register for the Roundtable Informational Meeting & Kick-off on October 7. GOLDEN APPLE EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
Welcome Back to School!
As the weather gets colder and we get excited about office supplies we know it is time for school to start. Partners In Education and the greater Portage County community want to welcome everyone back to school and wish you a great year. We have a lot of exciting things going on and look forward to working with our partner schools and businesses. Golden Apple Excellence in Education Great things happen in our schools all year so why only recognize them once a year? With the start of a new school year, we have the opportunity to look forward to recognizing educators and staff for the impact they make on students, parents and the community. When you see or experience something great happening in our local schools let us know by filling out and returning a Golden Apple Excellence in Education Recognition form to Partners In Education: http://bit.ly/1NGvVPm. We will recognize excellence in education throughout the year through social media and the Active Voice newsletter. There will be a special recognition at the Spring Celebration on May 3, 2016. Golden Apple Years of Service Recognition The Partners In Education Committee has been hard at work this summer planning for the 2015-2016 academic year. One addition to the Golden Apple program is the new Years of Service recognition program. Dedication to serving and teaching others is critical to our community so this year PIE will be recognizing educators and academic staff for the following years of service: 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30+.
