Executive Director’s Report

Making Change Without Political Rancor Let’s focus on making our community a beacon of economic vitality without getting sucked into all of the political rancor going on in our world. I think back to the days of my Intro to Psych class and the role that positive energy makes in change. There is a world of opportunity for that right in our own backyard. For starters, at the end of this month our community will be one of many in the state engaging in opportunities to create a more aspirational community. Young Professionals (YP) week is an event based on creating experiences regardless of age for community engagement. Just go to www.ypweek.com to better understand all of the happenings. It runs from April 22-30. On Friday, April 29th, a “Breakfast Club” experience will be held at the Basement Brewhaus on the UWSP campus in the Dreyfus University Center. The focus of that event will be reconnecting on progress with the New ERA initiative that began with the workshop in February. There have been some wins since then and a lot to do to create that economic vitality and quality of life. As the New ERA steering committee is wading through all of the great ideas coming out of the workshop, there are a few key concepts that need focus in our community. Living opportunities came up as the issue needing the most attention. That boils down to the type of housing available in our community. The hope of New ERA is to conduct focus group(s) in May to get some feedback on that topic and get like-minded individuals together to work on it. A second challenge is innovation and entrepreneurship. We are blessed in our community to have numerous home grown large and small businesses. We need to grow that culture and expand it into elementrepreneurs and elderpreneurs. Progress has been made since the New ERA workshop with a proposed IDEA Center at 1039 Ellis, home to the New ERA workshop. The Arts Alliance of Portage County is beginning this process with several partners alongside. The third main focus is community communication and marketing. This boils down to doing asset mapping and then collectively communicating that with our community and region. One simple example is how we have numerous event calendars in our community with no one place to go. The same can be said for entrepreneurship opportunities. Lots of going on and some need as well, but no one central location to serve as an access point. The Portage County Business Council is planning to do an “Entreprelooza” in June to connect entrepreneurship done in schools, business, education and government and begin that mapping. Other topics included government participation, infrastructure, recreation, education and entertainment. Along those lines, the UW-Stevens Points’ Student Government Association (SGA) recently held a voter education session on campus. Getting more young professionals involved in government was an issue out of the New ERA workshop and this UWSP session is a step towards working on that topic and getting student participation in government, whether running for office or voting. You can always check out action on our website (www.portagecountybiz.com), Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Five Ways to Turn Your Chamber of Commerce Membership Into Sales Many business owners join their local chamber of commerce because they recognize that their customers associate chamber affiliation with ethics, professionalism, and commitment to the community. One study on consumer preferences found that 63% of consumers prefer to shop and do business with chamber members. So it is no surprise that business owners gladly pay membership dues and place the chamber logo on their websites and front doors. But many of those businesses are not taking advantage of opportunities to increase sales and brand awareness. Yes, their chamber membership boosts their credibility in consumers’ eyes, but a chamber membership potentially offers a lot more. Here are five ways business owners can derive value from their chamber membership.

venture. Did you know that many chambers offer their members space on the chamber’s website for a nominal fee or even free? Aligning your company with the chamber website is a strategic move that allows you to share in the large number of community visits it generates. At the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce in Pennsylvania, membership includes your own profile page on the organization’s website. Debbie Iszauk, membership services director, says, “Our members frequently use their online profile page on the chamber’s website to give their customers a convenient point of reference to learn more about the services they offer. Members can post coupons, share company news, and communicate with our community at large through their profile page.”

1. Get on the chamber’s site One of the very first challenges new business owners face is quickly spreading the word about their

8

THE ACTIVE VOICE \\ PORTAGE COUNTY BUSINESS COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

NEXT PAGE..........

2. Let the chamber promote your news Most “how to” articles regarding free publicity tell you to ingratiate yourself with local reporters so that they will publish news about your company. At the chamber, no such effort is needed. One of its services is publishing news about its members’ companies and promoting their events—on its website, in a weekly email, or in a newsletter. Inform your local chamber of what’s new at your company. 3. Demonstrate your industry expertise via writing As already mentioned, most chambers are eager to publish their members’ news and events. However, an even better way of using print to get in front of potential sales leads is to write an article that other business owners will find useful and relevant. Chambers are very willing to post well-written articles submitted by members in their newsletter, on their website, or in their LinkedIn group.

“We’ve found that members who provide educational content are able to promote themselves as experts instead of salespersons,” says Matthew DiLallo, director of operations at The Chamber of Commerce. “Readers can contact them for their expert advice, which then becomes a very easy sales lead to convert.” Ask your local chamber for guidance on what is an appropriate format and then take the time to write a professional article that adds value to other members’ businesses. 4. Talk about your business Many local chambers of commerce offer ample opportunities for members to give presentations that introduce themselves and their businesses to fellow members and the community.

Speaking formats vary from one-minute “commercials” you give about yourself to 30-minute presentations that allow you to provide in-depth information about your company. Other opportunities can include serving on expert panels at seminars or serving as an emcee for a chamber conference. One of the benefits of these speaking opportunities is that they are in front of “safe” audiences. That means the room is full of people just like you, and they will be supportive. As businesspeople, they appreciate the pressure of giving a presentation, and they understand that everyone is there to network and pitch their services. 5. Host an after-hours event You spend a large part of your day chasing down sales leads. Why not entice them to come right to your front door? Hosting an after-hours chamber networking event is an excellent way to attract throngs of potential sales leads right to your own office. After-hours functions are typically more social than strictly sales-oriented daytime events, but the acquaintances you make can be invaluable.

March Business After Hours sponsored by The Boys & Girls Club of Portagce County and Keller Inc.

Don’t have adequate space for guests or you work out of a home office? Not a problem. Many small businesses partner with another chamber member to host after-hours gatherings. That still gives you the desirable host privileges. Hosts of after-hours networking typically get advertising signage, recognition by the chamber, and an opportunity to address attendees directly and share some information about their company. The bill was reported favorably out of committee by a vote of 14 to 6 and now awaits a full vote on the Senate floor. The National Potato Council (NPC) praises Chairman Roberts and his committee colleagues for advancing this legislation. This measure would give consumers, businesses and farmers uniform standards based on federal determination of food label requirements for all foods including those made with genetically modified organisms (GMO). A patchwork of state food labeling laws will increase costs to consumers by increasing processing and packaging costs. Enacting a national voluntary food labeling standard would eliminate those consequences in the marketplace. The committee’s approval comes at a critical time with the Vermont mandatory labeling law set to take effect in July. “U.S. potato growers are happy to see this legislation move forward,” said NPC Executive Vice President, John Keeling. “We are confident that both sides of the aisle in the Senate will reach a bipartisan compromise on any of the remaining issues.” /// Fiber is coming to the Portage County Business Park. Research – The Aspirus Heart & Vascular research team hand-picks studies and trials to address health needs of people right here in north central Wisconsin. Community education and programs aimed at preventing heart disease. Patient assistance – Funds help provide patients and families in financial need with housing, transportation, food and other basic needs that pose barriers to accessing heart care.

“We’re grateful for our volunteers, donors, and community partners whose support is making a difference in people’s lives locally,” said Kim Smerda, fund development specialist for the Aspirus Health Foundation. “It’s about helping people today through assistance, as well as in the future through education and research.” /// United Way of Portage County will hold auditions for its 2016 campaign video from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Sentry Theater in Stevens Point. United Way is seeking approximately one dozen child actors between the ages of 6 and 10 for the video, which will be shot at a date to be determined later in April. The video shoot will last approximately two hours. “This video will be a great opportunity for kids to appear in a professionally shot production,” said Scott Steuck, United Way of Portage County Director of Communications and Marketing. “Kids appearing in this video may also become famous locally, as thousands of people will see the video during the United Way 2016 campaign from late August through early December.” Children auditioning for the video should bring a prepared two-minute piece of their own choosing. In addition, they’ll be asked to read several lines from the script for the 2016 video. “While waiting to audition, we’ll make sure the kids are having fun in the auditorium,” said Steuck. “We’ll be asking kids funny questions; having them sing, dance and tell jokes; and giving them an opportunity to take center stage with an open microphone.” People can pre-register for the auditions by emailing the child’s name, parents’/guardians’ names, child’s age, address, and a phone number to contact a parent/guardian to scott@unitedwaypoco.org. Registration will also be accepted at the Sentry Theater on April 4 starting at 5:30 p.m. An adult must accompany children to the auditions. For information, contact Scott Steuck at 715-254-2185 or scott@unitedwaypoco.org. /// SEEK Careers/Staffing, Inc., in a collaboration with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), recently launched a new GED training benefit for its temporary employees and new applicants who do not currently have a high school diploma. SEEK pays for classes, books and testing fees for qualified employees. The employees have the option of attending one of the MATC campuses or getting their GED online. “The goal of this program is to help our employees achieve their educational goals, without having to face a cost burden in order to do so. It really was a no-brainer decision for us as a company, because it can open so many doors for our employees in terms of the type of employment opportunities available to them. The new opportunities can lead to longer-term employment in more skilled positions that often come with a greater wage. For some, it can mean an increased earning potential of about $115 per week. That’s pretty significant,” said Carol Schneider, CEO and Founder of SEEK Careers/Staffing. There’s no denying that the socioeconomic impact of getting a high school diploma or equivalent GED is a big deal. So big, that at SEEK Careers/Staffing, it was apparent the need was great. The biggest hurdle for those seeking the opportunity to get their GED was the cost. School tuition, books and testing fees can run several hundred dollars and was often cited as the number one reason that individuals hadn’t gotten their GED’s already. That’s where SEEK has stepped in to make it a little easier for the company’s employees to get the GED they desire.

We spent the afternoon at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association where we learned about solar and renewable energies and took a tour. We also learned about Portage County Parks from Gary Speckmann and ended our day with an activity in building consensus led by Nathan Sandwick.
