Portage County developed this nearly 400 acre Business and Industry Park along Interstate 39/US Hwy 51 in the City of Stevens Point, Wisconsin to provide a setting and opportunity for attracting new companies to the area and to grow and retain existing business. The plan included keeping prices reasonable, and creating an excellent environment with green space, appealing buildings, and excellent access. he Portage County Business Council (PCBC) works to facilitate a vibrant business climate throughout the county. We do this work through the two divisions of our organization – the chamber of commerce and the economic development division. Through meeting the needs of our members and new and existing businesses in Portage County, we fill a variety of needs in a variety of ways.

Business-Education Summit This annual event brings business and education together to learn more about talent development issues facing Portage County. Knowledge from guest speakers and small group discussions leads to a more informed community, increased partnerships, and future planning.

Portage County is located at the crossroads of newly improved State Highway 10, which runs east and west, and along Interstate 39, which runs north and south from the Illinois border south of Madison, to north of Wausau. State Hwy 29 can be accessed just north of Portage County which connects the state from east (Green Bay) to the Twin Cities of MN toward the west. Other east/west highways connecting the region include Hwy. 10, 54 and 66.

Stevens Point Area Public Schools Have A Tradition of Excellence

F

or years, the Stevens Point Area Public School District (SPAPSD) has been known throughout Central Wisconsin as an organization that fosters innovation and new concepts in learning. The District continues this mission to this day, working to enhance student achievement by preparing all children to be successful beyond the classroom, whether they enter higher education or the workforce upon graduating.

The school district consists of nine elementary schools, two junior high schools, one EL Education charter school, two specialized learning schools and one senior high school, serving Stevens Point, Plover and several surrounding communities.

With programs like Project Lead the Way at SPASH, which exposes students to engineering projects, the District is able to offer the opportunity to earn college credit. The District also continues to increase its use of technology in the classroom to help students and teachers develop important skills. Through a gift from the Sentry Insurance Foundation all students in grades 9-12 receive a laptop to use at home and in school. Originated and sponsored by WWSP 90 FM Radio, this spring tradition spanning three days in April began in 1970 when the radio station launched a trivia contest that ran for 54 consecutive hours, with teams of players competing for answers to media-oriented trivia questions. The contest is supported by local businesses that offer food and drink specials during the event. Teams accumulate points by participating in a variety of activities, including running questions, the trivia stone rally and music questions.
