DOES MY CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP EVEN MATTER? To be transparent, you know the answer I am going to give is yes. However, your role in this matters more than the Portage County TODD KUCKKAHN Business Council (PCBC) role. Through our value based membership EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR investment plan, we have shifted our role to being transformational rather than transactional. Members need to continue to do the same. Let me explain. PCBC is about engagement, growth, innovation, leadership, network development and partnerships. We do this while working towards retaining and attracting businesses and employees (i.e. talent). That is the important transformational work we do. And we do not do that alone! Once in a while we hear from a member that they dropped their membership because they didn’t see an increase in customers. That’s the transactional part that is not a priority for us. We are about customers/employees for the community and working on ways to attract and retain the talent that is your customer base. If customers are an important part of your business, you can grow them through your PCBC membership, but there are too many factors to count how and why any particular customer may walk through your doors. As a small example, each month we hold Business X-Change, SalesNet and Business After Hours events. First, you need to attend these events (and many others) to get value out of your membership. Other than lunch at SalesNet, there is no cost to attend. There is a cost if you don’t attend which is the lost opportunity of growing your imprint in the community. If you are transactional, you might attend one of those events with the idea of “forcing” your business card into someone’s hand and expecting them to buy your widget. If you are transformational, you would be more concerned about giving rather than getting. Transformational members focus on how they can help others with the knowledge that it will come full circle and you will get something down the road. That’s how a community grows. You can get involved on a PCBC committee and support our efforts in government relations, talent development, economic development or business engagement. These transformational focused committees work on community priorities with our partners. Examples include Inspire, Ignite, Leadership Portage County, Ambassadors, business retention & attraction, legislative advocacy & education, event production, membership retention and so much more. In and of themselves, they will not bring customers through your door yet we work toward transforming our community to help businesses grow and attract and retain employees. Your expertise can help grow our community. Members also see opportunity through marketing, advertising and sponsorship for their business. We beg people to write blogs that we can post to promote the issue or topic and indirectly promote your business. You can advertise in this very digital magazine and there are countless events and activities to get your name in front of customers. Members sometimes say, “I don’t need the chamber, however I support the chamber because of the impact the chamber collectively makes and the impact it makes with other organizations”. That’s a healthy attitude because we are so much more than getting a customer to walk through your door. Essentially they are the kind of transformational member that our community needs to meet the challenges we have ahead of us. 4

SALON ENVY WINS CAP SERVICES’ BUSINESS EXPANSION CONTEST
C
AP Services recently named Salon Envy of Stevens Point the winner of CAP’s 2nd Annual Business Expansion Contest.
Salon Envy was established in 2008. Its professional stylists provide salon services including color, cut, updos, waxing and nail art. “We worked really hard to grow our customer base with great service and quality products,” said Jessica Richie, Salon Envy’s owner. “The business grew year by year from the positive response and word-ofmouth referrals by our satisfied clients.” Salon Envy will receive a $1,000 cash prize as well as a variety of free services from contest partners including one year of business technical assistance, a marketing assessment, “StrengthsFinder 2.0” and “Strengths Base Leadership” training materials, enrollment in the ‘Marketing Made Lean’ course at Fox Valley Technical College, business legal consulting with Hans Thompson from Sweeney Law Office S.C., a one-year membership to the Portage County Business Council, mentorship through the Packers Mentor-Protégé Program, and referrals to services specific to the business’s needs. “There are many business plan and business start-up contests available to new entrepreneurs” said Laura West, CAP’s Business Development VP. “We are proud to be able to support and celebrate growing businesses in our area. The connections made between contest finalists and the contest partners have been extremely valuable.” Contest supporters and partners included Calumet County Economic Development Corporation, Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, Fox Cities Regional Partnership, Fox Valley Technical College, Green Bay Packers Mentor-Protégé Program, New London Area Chamber of Commerce, Portage County Business Council, Sweeney Law Office S.C., UW-Oshkosh Small Business Development Center, Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce and Waupaca County Economic Development Corporation. A panel of five judges with economic development expertise selected Salon Envy based on content and presentation of business expansion plans. Any business within the eight county region that CAP’s Business Development Program serves – Calumet, Marathon, Marquette, Outagamie, Portage, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood – operating their business for two years or more with plans to expand their sales footprint was eligible to apply. “I was really surprised we were chosen,” said Richie. “I feel like I definitely need help with the business end of my business. I know how to do hair and use products but I need help with the business side so I thought this contest would be very beneficial to me.” For more information, visit capservices.org Portage County Business Council

SAY HELLO TO TREVOR WELCOME PCBC’S NEWEST INTERN FROM UWSP
Trevor, can you tell us about yourself? I’m from the small town of Tomahawk, WI where I spent most of my time hunting, fishing, and playing sports. I’m a people person. I enjoy getting to meet new people, as well as spending a lot of my time hanging out with friends and just enjoying life when I’m not working at PCBC, bartending, or in class. Right now I’m focused on getting the most enjoyment out of my time in Stevens Point.
“I’m not 100% sure what the future holds for me, but I look forward to all the new friends I will What are you currently going to school for? make and all the old friends I am currently in my last semester at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and will be graduating in December. I will be that will cross my path.” graduating with three majors: Business Administration – Marketing, Business Administration – Management, and Economics.
What are some of your favorite things you have experienced at PCBC so far? A couple of my favorite things about working here at the Portage County Business Council are the new challenges every day and the staff. I get to work on many different projects and help in different departments, which keeps me out of a routine and on my toes about what I’ll be doing that day. All of these different projects let me learn a lot more in my time here. Working with such a fun, energetic staff has been a great highlight of working here, because I actually enjoy my time at work. What are some things you are looking foward to be doing in the future? I am looking forward to graduating, gaining further experience in all aspects of life, and growing with a company in the future. I’m not 100% sure what the future holds for me, but I look forward to all the new friends I will make and all the old friends that will cross my path. Tell us something fun about yourself? I have worked as a bartender for about 3 years and have spent a lot of my time in a bar, but have never had a drop of alcohol.

OCTOBER RECAP GOVERNMENT
OCTOBER 19, 2017 - AGENDA RECAP WRITTEN BY: ANNA GOLACKSON The Leadership Portage County Government day was a deep dive into the different branches of government that help Portage County to run. In the morning, LPC-ers were granted time to get to know one another through a group resume exercise, and then brushed up on our government knowledge and vocabulary as assisted by LPC graduates Dan and Paula. After presentations by some of our peers regarding their respective expertise, Create Portage County Executive Director Greg Wright arrived to provide us insight on the mission of the organization and to discuss Placemaking (http://www. createportagecounty.org/ placemaking/), foreshadowing some afternoon brainstorming. Lunch was provided by the Point After Pub, a first for the local establishment in providing catering. Delicious!

In the afternoon, participants were allowed time with State Senator Patrick Testin and State Representative Katrina Shankland, County Executive Patty Dreier and Town of Lanark Chair Mike Pagel. Democracy in action, constituents were provided the unique opportunity to directly communicate with those that represent them. The overarching advice from all representatives is to find an issue about which you are passionate, and pursue involvement as it pertains to those issues. You do not have to be an expert, just get involved!
Thursday, November 16 ∙ 2:00-4:30 PM ∙ Redeemer Lutheran Church Spend a day in someone else’s shoes. Join the Portage County Business Council, Leadership Portage County, and CAP Services, Inc. for a Poverty Simulation next week. 15 additional participants are needed for family scenarios and vendor/service provider roles. No experience is necessary. Poverty simulations are an opportunity for individuals to obtain first-hand knowledge of many of the situations and decisions experienced by low-income households. The experience involves
participants assuming a role in a family (grandparent raising grandchildren, single parent, unmarried adults living together, two-parent household). Family units are provided with background information regarding their income and expenses and are asked to achieve goals over the “4-week” simulation experience (pay bills, feed children, get them to school, go to work or get a job, access community resources).
to the realities faced by lowincome people. This simulation is open to all and we are seeking both volunteers to serve as vendors/service providers, and participants to be given a family scenario. To sign up to participate, please contact Kayla Rombalski – talent@portagecountybiz. com or go to www. portagecountybiz.com/povsim.
It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants
