Aquatics

Changes to Aquatic lesson registration

These improvements

• Adding skills as a pre–requisite to a customer’s profile in the registration system as a requirement for aquatics lessons and

• Adding additional registration dates for aquatic lessons on a rolling registration. A rolling registration will provide an opportunity for participants to register for a lesson more frequently throughout the season and provide fewer breaks in learning.

Registration for aquatic lesson programs will go as follows:

• Port Coquitlam residents will have access at 8 am 30 days prior to the first day of swim lessons.

• General public will have access at 8 am 27 days prior for the first day of swim lessons.

Providing proof of prerequisites

Bring a report card to one of the Recreation Centres (Hyde Creek Recreation Centre or Port Coquitlam Community Centre) in person or send an email with the participant’s name and a photo of the report card to recreation@portcoquitlam.ca. Please ensure the photo includes the participant’s name and the last level they have passed.

If you are unsure whether the prerequisites are in the system, please contact the Recreation team at recreation@portcoquitlam.ca or call 604–927–PLAY (7529).

Aquatic Drop–ins

Registered drop–in programs include:

Aquatic Programs

• Participants may only register for one swim lesson set (including performance enhancers).

• Participants currently enrolled in a swim lesson set may NOT be on another waitlist

• Participants not currently enrolled in a lesson set can be added to multiple waitlists.

• Participants must successfully complete a swim level prior to registering in the next level.

• Additional swim class registrations will result in participant being withdrawn from additional registrations (refund policy in effect).

• Drop in during a public swim for an evaluation if you are unsure of your child’s level.

Meet Port Coquitlam’s new Artist in Residence,

Keely O’Brien.

Check out portcoquitlam.ca/air for more information on workshops and public engagement opportunities.

Keely is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, BC. Her practice incorporates intricately handmade objects with innovative theatre creation. Devoted to a thoroughly DIY process, Keely’s work includes immersive installations, imaginative ephemera, and interactive experiences. As a community engaged arts facilitator and educator, Keely creates collaborative artwork with community members and organizations. Frequently site–responsive and engaged with questions of place, home, and belonging, Keely’s work aims to celebrate the potential for creativity and community in the place and people around her.

During her residency in the Outlet Studio, Keely will engage the community to recognize and record homes that are woven into family histories. She is particularly interested in delving into the themes of intergenerational memory and how our understanding of the concept of “home” evolves, especially in light of the ongoing housing crisis. The core objectives of this project are to re–exam ordinary places through a creative lens and to inspire meaningful and personal connections among community participants.

To participate in this project please attend one of the community engagement opportunities listed below, or fill out the online creative questionnaire available here: keelyobrien.ca/place–portraits

Keely O’Brien will also be giving an artist talk about her project and art practice at the City’s Cultural Roundtable on September 19 at 4 pm

To learn more about Keely and her artistic practice please visit portcoquitlam.ca/air

Art Exhibitions

The Michael Wright Art Gallery (MWAG), Outlet Gallery, City Hall Gallery, and Port Coquitlam Community Centre feature a rotating program of exhibitions by local and regional artists.

The Power of Surrender by Kelsy Schumacher

September 25, 2024 – January 14, 2025

The Michael Wright Art Gallery presents The Power of Surrender by Kelsy Schumacher. This solo exhibition includes intricate fibre art macramé wall-hangings. One of the greatest acts of surrender for Kelsy is being satisfied with where each piece ended up and how everything will work out. Anxiety is something she faces often, so surrendering on repeat has been the only way to completion. In these works, she explores themes of mental health, being true to oneself, and spiritual growth. The colours she uses are often symbolic of a feeling or part of a story at large. Each design is a testament to her creativity, craftsmanship and dedication to her practice. Through her art, she invites you to immerse yourself in a world of beauty, relatable stories, and inspired connection that will leave an impression.

Celebration by Clay For You: Pottery Collective

September 25, 2024 – January 14, 2025

The Outlet Gallery presents Celebration by Clay For You: Pottery Collective. The Clay for You Collective is a group of Korean and Chinese artists committed to carrying forward the lessons they have learned from traditional master potter Clay Kim. Their goal is to educate the creative community in the Lower Mainland about Korean history, culture, and craft. This exhibition features ceramic works made in the style of Celadon and Buncheong pottery –– both iconic genres of Korean traditional craft. Celadon, in particular, is symbolic of the resilience of Korean people. Its tumultuous history includes many accounts of violence, theft, and imperialism. This history indicates the Korean people’s resiliency and the perseverance this immigrant community has demonstrated. The Clay For You Collective is committed to contributing a rich multicultural experience in the community by introducing and presenting traditional Korean pottery.

HANDS–ON CERAMIC DEMONSTRATION AND WRITING HANGEUL (ALL AGES) – OUTLET WORKROOM

Clay For You, a Korean pottery collective, is offering this event as a continuation of their gallery exhibition, designed to foster community connections and share the richness of traditional Korean pottery and culture. All participants will have the opportunity to witness traditional Korean carving techniques and wheel throwing. You can even select a pre–made ceramic piece and inscribe your name in Hangeul (Korean alphabet) to take home as a memento. Take advantage of the hand–building contest, where you can create something with clay for a chance to win a personalized special celadon ceramic cup featuring your astrological sign. This is a drop–in event open to the public.
