You want to sort your waste properly but are finding all the rules confusing, and perhaps even a little frustrating. You’re not alone. Recent audits of Port Coquitlam waste carts show that although most residents sort their waste properly, many are still putting the wrong things into their carts. Ongoing contamination will lead to steep fines and fee hikes that will be passed on to taxpayers. It also means we send more to the landfill.

Did you know? Plastic bags never go in your green or blue cart. Take them to a depot instead (find locations at www.portcoquitlam.ca/recycling).

Keeping Port Coquitlam clean

The last thing you want to see at your local park is a big pile of garbage. But more and more, household garbage and re-usable items are being illegally dumped in parks, along trails and other areas. A $500 fine may be issued for illegal dumping. Residents are encouraged to report dumping to 604.927.5496 or operations@portcoquitlam.ca. Residents are also advised to donate or sell re-usable items rather than place them at the curb, which is unsightly and not permitted by City bylaw. Go to www.portcoquitlam.ca/recyclingdirectory to find out where to take unwanted items and to search for charities.

Illegal dumping is on the rise.

As Port Coquitlam residents, many of us are proud to share a hometown with Canadian legend Terry Fox. Much progress has been made since then, but even more can be achieved – if we all try. On the 35th anniversary of Terry’s run, the mayors of the

Tri-Cities have challenged other cities to help to raise $1 for every resident in 2015, a total of $35 million. Ultimately, the success of our challenge will rely on people like you who step forward to support this cause. Many of us have been benefited from the advances in diagnosis, treatment and outcomes made possible by cancer research. Keep fighting for Terry’s dream – come out on Sept. 20 (see below left) or donate at www.terryfox.org. Mayor Greg Moore

CITY OF P RT COQUITLAM

Is your business ready for a disaster? When disaster strikes, local businesses could be affected by power failures, access problems, lack of city services and other issues. Some business never recover after a major emergency. On Sept.17, local businesses can learn how to prepare for a disaster at a free session from 2 to 5 p.m. at Wilson Centre. Held by the City of Port Coquitlam Emergency Preparedness Program, the session will cover: • Risks to businesses from major disasters and what they can expect from the city, • Solutions for business recovery and tools for business continuity planning, • Keeping a company operating through the recovery stages, and other topics. The event also provides businesses with an opportunity to network with other local companies. To register or for information, call 604.927.5466 or email fire@portcoquitlam.ca.

It’s bear season:

Lock it Right!

Is your household protected while you sleep? Smoke alarms should be installed on all levels of the home (including the basement), outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom. For more smoke alarm tips and information about Fire Prevention Week, click www.portcoquitlam.ca/fpw.

As fall approaches, bear activity may increase as they fatten up for winter hibernation. Garbage and green carts are popular targets for bears, so it’s important to secure them – either with a certified lock or in an enclosure such as a garage – to keep your neighbourhood safe. This spring, the city distributed wildlife-resistant cart locks to households receiving city waste services in bear-prone areas. The locks are easy to use but must be installed correctly to function properly. Step-by-step instructions and a video are posted at www.portcoquitlam.ca/lock.

Staff volunteers improve path A new wheelchair-accessible gravel path is now providing better access to the Hyde Creek Watershed Society’s Education Centre & Hatchery, thanks to the Boots on the Ground city staff volunteer team. In late July, nine volunteers laid a new limestone path to replace a rock walkway that had been difficult for wheelchairs, strollers and some types of footwear to navigate. It was the second project for Boots on the Ground, which in June repainted the sidewalk footprints that help guide the residents of Hawthorne Lodge. The volunteer initiative was started as a way for city staff to give back to the community in which they work.
