INTRODUCTION
Rhyme and Reason Youth Counselling Services
‘Community Elders Guiding Youth Away from Trouble’ or Neighborhood Elderly Men Counseling Community Youths on How to Avoid Recidivism.
WHY LIFE SKILLS LEARNING IS ESSENTIAL TRAINING FOR WILMINGTON YOUTHS
For Wilmington youths who have experienced generational poverty and have no concept of work ethics, it can be challenging to break the cycle of at-risk behavior and avoid recidivism. The lack of positive role models and limited exposure to constructive activities can contribute to a sense of hopelessness and a lack of motivation to strive for a better future. LIFE SKILLS TRAINING IS CRITICALLY NEEDED TO AVOID RECIDIVISM.
A good work ethic is a result of having good life skills. When you have the skills to manage your emotions, your health, your finances, and your relationships, you are more likely to be successful in the workplace. You will be better able to focus on the tasks at hand, be more organized, and stay motivated. With good life skills, you are more equipped to handle stress, solve problems, and deal with difficult people. You will also be better able to make decisions that are beneficial to your career, and take initiative to create new opportunities. All of these skills together will lead to a better work ethic and improved job performance.
In the program title, “Rhyme” is a reference to the hip-hop generation youth, who are often heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and music. Hip-hop has often been associated with urban environments which can sometimes glorify lifestyles that involve criminal activity, gang violence, misogyny and drug use. This exposure to negative influences can contribute to the development of at-risk-of-imprisonment behavior and increase their likelihood of entering the prison system and recidivism, returning to the prison system.
On the other hand, “Reason” represents the Hip-Hop Elders who have gained valuable knowledge and experience throughout their lives. They have lived through various challenges, overcome obstacles, and accumulated a wealth of wisdom that can be passed down to younger generations. By counseling youth on how to avoid imprisonment and recidivism, these elders can provide the guidance and support necessary to steer them away from negative influences and towards a positive future.
By combining the perspectives and experiences of both Rhyme and Reason, hip-hop generation youth can gain valuable insights into the consequences of at-risk behavior and develop the skills necessary to make positive choices in their lives. The wisdom and guidance of the Hip-Hop Elder can serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the youth to pursue their goals, despite the obstacles they may face.

Youth in generational poverty need life skills counseling because they often lack role models and constructive advice, leading to at-risk-of-imprisonment behavior, recidivism, and a real sense of hopelessness. Breaking this cycle is challenging without work ethics, motivation and life skills.
This funding enabled Dr. Redding’s Commuity Maintenance Crew to become frontline, first responders at the onset of the COVID pandemic. Her crew spray-washed and sanitized exterior doorways of neighborhood houses, delivered sanitation supplies, gloves and masks door-to-door to shut-ins and elderly residents. They stood on neighborhood street corners and they passed out masks for children and supplies and fliers letting residents know where to go to get vaccines and also emergency services for food and water.
As a visible, viable and reliable neighborhood resource, her crew became known in the community as Dr. Redding’s Magnificent-7 Commmunuty Crew.
Result: Dr. Redding created 6 sustainable, wellpaying jobs for 6 unemployed men in her community, even giving them pay raises over the last two years.
The collaboration between Rhyme and Reason can help young men understand the importance of work ethics, including the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Elderly men can guide young people in developing work ethic and setting goals, even through difficult times.
On March 15, 2018, Dr. Doris J. Redding, DD, Founded Rainbow of Grace Community Services, Inc. in the City of Wilmington DE., as an Independent Contractor, to create jobs for the, unemployed men in her community.
By July she had secured a contract with the City, under a Community Development Block Grant, to provide community maintenance services in return for funding of the salaries for her 7-member cleaning crew (including herself).
Contract payments were made in six-week installments of $12,600 for salaries only: Dr. Redding provided all other business operating expenses from her own resources.
She received funding from the DCF for Impact of COVID-19 Community Response in 2020.
For many young people in Wilmington, it can be hard to break the cycle of bad behavior and not get into trouble (again). Many come from families that have not had money for a long time, and don’t understand the importance of working hard. Not having positive role models or having enough positive activities to do can make them feel like there is no hope and not enough motivation to do better.

“Stay Inspired. Never Stop Believing.”

Based on her successful experience in creating jobs for men in her community, Dr. Redding decided to incorporate her Independent Contractor enterprise to include underrepresented women into her new janitorial services contracting business by recruiting her new janitorial work crews through church and church outlets.
Ultimately, this community partnership can help youth break the cycle of generational poverty and at-risk behavior, leading to a brighter future for the entire community.
This new Janitorial Business shall be known and branded as:
By empowering youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to make positive choices and pursue their goals, the relationship between Rhyme and Reason can contribute to the creation of a community that is safe, prosperous, and supportive of all its members.
