THE BERKELEY ART MUSEUM BY TOYO ITO

PROGRAM The Berkeley Art Museum combined the art museum and film archive into a single sturcture and integrate various other functions as well. The art galleries, a theater, a library, a cafe, a shop, and offices will all share functionality and researchers as well as the general public will create a lively space linking inside and outside and the green of the campus with the energy of the city.

FORM Ito’s design calls for a three-story building with an unexpectedly fluid steel exterior that curves to meet dramatic, towering windows. The interior will comprise a loose grid of interlocking spaces with gently curved walls that wind and bend throughout the structure. In places, the gallery walls will part, as if pulled aside like curtains, to allow passage between the varied exhibition areas.

ORGANISATION OF SPACES The space is based on a grid drawn of 4 x 4, the edges of the grids curve softly towards the points of intersection and connecting at opposite corners. Ito creates continuity among rooms by peeling back the corners that define each room one by one. Nevertheless, the cecullar arrangement of the galleries allows an intimate and non-heirarchical feeling.

CIRCULATION & ACCESS The museum is arranged on three levels, each level is divided into enfilade of rooms which are accessed via a central circulation core,

ESCAPE DISTANCES Other than the centralised circulation connecting the three levels, the evacuation staircases locate at the West side. The main entrance locates on the South but also having entrances on the East and West, providing several escape routes and exits in case of emergency.

LIGHTING TECHNIQUES Skylights on the third floor provide some of the galleries with natural lighting, the museum can therefore accomodate the exhibition of different types of art and media. Three of the eight galleries on second floor has “vista spaces” which are naturally lit.

STORIES & LEVELS The museum’s first floor houses two theaters; five exhibition galleries, one of which, the MATRIX gallery, will be opened to the public without any charge. Hence, there is the museum store and café, opening onto Center Stree and other visitor amenities. The second floor houses eight galleries, a screening room, the Conceptual Art Study Center, a learning center, and a library. Three of the galleries on the second floor will have ancillary “vista spaces,” two looking east to Oxford Street and the Berkeley campus, the third overlooking Center Street. The top floor includes seven galleries, they will be dedicated to works on paper and to the museums celebrated Asian art collection, and will include an Asian garden gallery.

FLEXIBILITY The museum not only allows different exhibitions to be hosted on different levels but the centralised access to the galleries allow suites of rooms to accomodated and to be dedicated to different exhibitions. The museum therefore has a high degree of flexibility.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR With a plaza-like extension on Center Street, the largely transparent ground-floor facade approahces the visitors through inviting exploration of the museum . The building offers rich opportunities for interactions with the diverse population and institutions of the neighborhood and UC Berkeley community. Outdoor public space is offered in different levels to reinterpret the sensitivity to the scale and fabric of the surrounding neighborhood, at the same time offering a distinctive architectural addition to it.

SERVICES & VENTILATION The loading dock for services locates near Addison Street, separated from the main entrances for visitors on Oxford Street and Center Street. The storage space is right next to the service route. There is a separated circulation route for staff and services connected with the office on second and top floor, visually isolated from the curved white walls.

Fragmentation

Definition:

to break the whole into fragments. No clean edges. Where the idea of whole is absent.

Reflection:

The fragmentation iteration here is a composition of small boxes. Dividing the large box into small cubes. By removing some of the small cubes to create the feeling of fragmentation. It is interesting to see that the empty spaces (voids) created while removing the small cubes and are connected with each other through the random small openings.

Folding

Definition:

folding is the deformation of a material, which is generally thin and has more or less radius of curvation.

Reflection:

I quite like this iteration, although it is a very simple form. The form is folded inward and create a semi-open space in the middle with a small opening at top. As the surounding wall is bended inward at top, it creats a special experiment inside. I think this internal space and its spacial experiment is very suitable for gallert space.

Bluring

Definition:

Inarchitectural aspect, bluring is a process to blur the boundaries between architecture and its context, not only in a physical sense, but also in a psychological manner.

Reflection:

This iteration explores the idea of Bluring. Inspired by Wuxi Show Theatre, I use columns to form this iterations. By changing the distance between these columns, to give this blured house image in the middel. I also like the Pepsi Pavillion a lot. Mist blurd the boundary of the architecture, and at the same time, offers the static architecture a sense of lightness.

Transparency

Definition:

Transparency represents openness, communication and accontability. As a defining feature of modern architecture, it is a medium to open up closed space to natural light and air.

Reflection:

I expored the idea of varies transparency in this iteration. By overlaying translucent glass, this iteration shows different transparency from different angles. I think it will be interesting to use this idea for the gallery facade in the leter process.

Positive & Negative

Definition:

In an art work, positive space are the areas that are the subjects, and negative space is the area around or between subjects. In architectural aspect, building itself as the positive space is very important, while the empty spaces (in-between space) within the building is also important.

Reflection:

I tried to achieve the idea of Positive and Negative by digging out stairs from the volumn. So in a sense the negative space become the positive part and positive space become the negative part.

Iterations.

This iteration explores the idea of Order and Disorder by combining the typical floors with the randomly folded walls. The twisted walls break the static and uniform feeling of the form. Further exploration can be developed based on this logic

Order & Disorder

Distortion is the process of distorting forms. Curves can be seen as the distortion of straight lines. So I create this iteration based on this idea. The form was stretched and twisted and then connected to the ground plane.

Distortion 22

Optics

I quite like this iteration of optics. By overlaping the cylinder forms, it create an internal space with mang small openings. The Openings allowed ambience light to come inside, which I think is very suitable for the gallery space. It brings natural light inside, while avoid the direct light at the same time.

Iterations.

Illusion is an instance of a wrong or misinterpreted percenption of a sensory experience. This iteration explores the idea of illusion by usding the louvers elements. The louvers will seems disapeared as the looking angle changes.

Illusion

Inverse is the opposite or contrary position, direction, order, or effect. I tried to expore this idea by minimise the area of the base of the form, and create the inverse feeling. However I do not like the outcome as it is too focus on the external form. I think the idea of inverse is better to be express through the program, or the spacial experiment.

Repetition is a process of reusing the same or similar elements in the design, and create a sense of unity, consistency and cohesiveness.

Repetitive

Use the idea of fragmentation to divide the spaces. The divided spaces can be used as different gallery space.

Urban Massing.

Building as an abstract object + Folding

This massing is aiming to combine the idea of abstract object and folding. The giant curved walls create a special internal experience for the gallery. Also allowed the ambient light goes in to the gallery space from the top. The problem will be how the artworks is going to present on the curved walls.

This massing is aiming to combine the idea of figure ground and distorsion. I tried to twist the form and connected them to fit into the site.

Building as a container + Building as Landscape

This massing is aiming to combine the idea of building as a container and landscape. The roofshape can be seen as an extension of yara river feature. The facade form need more consideration.

For this massing I used the idea of Bluring and Building as diagram of function. I seperate each functional space into different cubes, and then stack them back. Columns are used to cover the functional cubes and create the feeling of bluring. The column should be thinner and denser.

Design Statement 01

Notions:

At present, especially during this global pandemic, a large proportion of our life is moving toward the cyber world. Social media are so convenient that can provide us with any kind of information whenever we want, also include artworks. So I start this project by questioning how a gallery can provide people with unique experiences and become irreplaceable by social media. In the contemporary context, the art gallery is no longer a purely independent space for exhibiting artworks, but a place where allows people to interact with the fragments from past, present, and future. The new NGV contemporary gallery intends to provide people with an interactive experience, not only with local and international artworks but also with the architecture itself

Statement:

The design approach for NGV-C is to create a journey of discovery for the visitors. So visiting the gallery is not only a process of learning from artworks but also an experience of communicating with ourselves.

Design Statement 02 Notions:

At present, especially during this global pandemic, a large proportion of our life is moving toward the digital world. Social media are so convenient that can provide us with any kind of information whenever we want, also include artworks. So, I start this project by questioning how a gallery can provide people with unique experiences and become irreplaceable by social media. In the contemporary context, the art gallery is no longer a purely independent space for exhibiting artworks, but a place where allows people to interact with the art works. Compared with traditional art, people are almost considered as an active participant with contemporary art instead of separate with them like the past. The gallery collects fragments from past, present, and future, and creates intersections between times. The new NGV contemporary gallery intends to provide people with an interactive experience, not only with local and international artworks but also with the architecture itself. Spaces are separated according to its functions, and reconnected with each other in a more non-hierarchically way, which encourage the integration of the public and the culture of contemporary art.

Statement:

The design approach for NGV-C is to build up the interaction relationship between public and contemporary art. The gallery become not a monument, but a platform for discussions, and for people to interact with each other, with art and with the architecture. The non-hierarchical spaces of the gallery encourage people to move freely and provide people the opportunity to interpret art in their own way. So, visiting the gallery is not only a process of learning from artworks but also an experience of communicating with ourselves.
