Superstudio.

Superstudio suggested the idea of “anti-design” culture as a means to provide commentary on politics, capitalism, and urbanism, by creating ideas in which everyone is given a functional space that frees itself of time, place, and the need for excessive objects.

The Continuous Monument, Suprestudio, 1969.

Negative Space Model

Negative Space Model - Top View

The methodology (which was used by Luigi Moretti in the structure and sequence of sapce, 1952) is a effective way to look for form prototypes. It simplify the inside-out space to get some basic elements of mass and geometry. Different forms give different spatial characteristics. The dynamic relationship between each spaces can produces different spatial Ronchamp Chapel. Le Cobusier France, 1954

Heizer with his sculpture “North, East, South, West” and his dog Tomato Rose.

Heizer, a pioneer of the earthworks movement, began “City” in 1972.

“City” is made almost entirely from rocks, sand, and concrete that Heizer has mined and mixed on site. The use of valueless materials is strategic, a hedge against what he sees as inevitable future social unrest.

15

Exercise 3: Submerged Building as Landart.

Iteration 1. This iteration is designing the city as a natural land mark. As people are currently facing the problems of sea level rising and sea cliff collapse, losing lands become a huge issue. This city can be seen as a begining of people retaking of land and a rebirth. Plan.

16

Iteration 2. This iteration is designed on purpose of allowing the city to expand along the changing time and needs. Infrastructures can be built as modules and placed into the grids and required. Living spaces will locate surround the central public space. Buildings are connected by bridges.

17

Site Plan.

Plan. 18

Iteration 3. This iteration is designed based on city fucntions. There are two types of grid intersecting within this iteration. Public space will be arranged with in the cube grid and peoples’ living space will be arranged in the rhomboid grid.

Ice Watch Olafur Eliasson Twelve large blocks of ice cast off from the Greenland ice sheet are harvested from a fjord outside Nuuk and presented in a clock formation in a prominent public place. The work raises awareness of climate change by providing a direct and tangible experience of the reality of melting arctic ice.

Floating Igloos. This iteration is trying to find a new way of living above the sea. Different with traditional cities, the city above sea has no site and space limiation. The city will be formed based on the hexagon modules. These modules can used to build buildings in different sizes as required, and at the same time, it can also used as the circulation platforms to link buildings together. The igloo form also can be seen as a reminder to raise people’s awareness of global warming issue for people. 24

This concept is a modern reinterpretation of William Morris’s socialistic factory, where divisions among living space, work space and leisure space are dimished. The floating city includes agriculture, production, living and

recycle-system in a relatively small

scale city. By reduce the distance between living space and public space, these facilities can work as a galllery or an exhibition to people. 28
