Letter from the president Viração Educommunication presents its 2016 Report with a sparkle in the eyes of all those who build this work. In a fragile economic and political scenario, Brazilian social organizations have had to redouble their creativity and innovation in order to ensure the execution of their activities sustainably. In order to make this work possible, “Vira” had a synchronized and competent team, strengthened by a new management model, which was added to the overall coordination. Viração Educommunication achieved great advances in its activities, carried out both in Brazil and abroad. A big part of these achievements are contained in this report. During this process, we developed moments that strengthened Viração’s actions, including institutional evaluation, planning of team’s work and functions, analysis of positions and salaries, hiring of new professionals for new departments, and elaboration of sustainability and voluntary policies. When we look at the numbers, Viração surprises by the impact of its projects, campaigns and educational actions. It is enough to see that our activities currently cover 2,317 adolescents and young people in Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Portugal and Morocco. On the financial side, the results were also positive, ending 2016 with surprising numbers. As it already happened in previous periods, our financial balance is positive. In 2016, Viração presented a novelty: the realization of Viração&Jangada, a new association with legal configuration in Trentino, northern Italy. This new international arm arises as a result of an arduous work which begun in 2009, in partnership with the local association called Jangada. Although it functions independently, Viração&Jangada can contribute to the expansion of our way of knowing and experiencing Educommunication and the defense of the rights of adolescents and young people around the world. It is this feeling of joy and conviction that shows that we are moving in the right direction. Therefore, I invite you to read this report that systematizes the results achieved by Viração in 2016.

Viração Educommunication Since 2003, Viração has been working with its own methodology of work on educational projects and youth mobilization. The proposed activities encourage adolescents and young people to participate in human rights discussion spaces through processes, interventions and communication products. Viração’s activities are structured in three distinct and complementary axes:

TRAINING

CONTENT PRODUCTION

SOCIAL MOBILIZATION

The axis of formation, or training of adolescents, youngsters and educators aims both the apprehension of production techniques in communication, as well as the sensitization and expansion of the sociocultural repertoire on human rights, politics and citizen participation. The axis of content production by and for adolescents and young people is an important dimension of Viração’s methodology. The production of communication products enables the practice of the content taught in the formations and deliberately exercise the human right to communication and freedom of expression.

Through the axis of social mobilization, we can value the action among peers in carrying out activities to mobilize other adolescents and young people. These young people are sensitized to social issues and encouraged to participate in public policy debates, as well as to carry out educational coverage of strategic dates and actions. Through a unique methodology, Viração has already impacted the lives of more than 5 million adolescents and young people. Prioritizing youth interests, the organization works on themes such as the environment, health, politics, diversity, gender equality and sexuality.

Mission To inspire and to connect adolescents and young people to build a just, participative and plural society through educommunication processes and practices.

Vision Adolescents and young people with guaranteed rights and actively participating in the transformation of the world

The initiative started in 2008 and has Viração as its technical partner. Along with PCU, Viração engages and educates adolescents in order to guarantee their participation in social mobilization process, political incidence and peer education. During the first semester of 2016, the trainings were about themes such as children and adolescents rights, youth political participation, social mobilizations and communication. The themes were approached by the perspective of racism and youth homicides. The main goal of the activities developed in the second half of 2016 was to influence the elections in São Paulo, by educating young people on how to participate incisively in the city’s public Youth Forums.

Viva Melhor Sabendo Jovem (Live Better Knowing) Through communication actions and urban interventions through a mobile health unit, the Viva Melhor Sabendo Jovem (Live Better Knowing) promotes free HIV testing using oral fluids in regions of LGBTQI sociability, adopting peer education as its methodology. The testing is offered by young prevention agents trained by the STD and aids department of the city of São Paulo. In addition to the activities related to testing and street interventions, the project includes moments of theoretical-political formation, when the young participants have the opportunity to discuss topics related to HIV/aids, race and sexuality, and LGBTQI memory and history in Largo do Arouche, the region of the city where the testing takes place. The project fosters the creation of communication products, such as planned actions for social media concerning the prevention, testing and treatment of HIV and other STDs. Finally, the work in the mobile health unit also consists in distributing and promoting the usage of condoms, as well as guaranteeing the access and adherence of the HIV positive public to the public health system. .

The new comprehensions around gender and sexual diversity have attributed a more complex dimension to sexuality. Therefore, it became essential to discuss issues related to sexual and reproductive rights among young people, the understanding of gender, and the approach towards sex and body through a political perspective.

Sustainabilitye Institutional Communication The institutional communication in Viração had a timid growth in 2016. The department acted operationally in the first semester and strategically in the following, as part of the organization’s sustainability plan. As to potentiate the institutional image of Viração, in 2017 the department will focus on the development of institutional campaigns, online and offline, as well as on projects’ support and the occupation of political spaces regarding adolescence and youth.

Social Media In Viração’s Social Media, although the number of likes in the institutional Facebook page has increased, the number of new likes has dropped 76% compared to 2015, revealing lesser reach. In 2017, the institutional social media will be used strategically, both to create awareness about what Viração does, as well as to produce relevant content for our followers.

Viração at HABITAT III – United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development In 2016, Viração was in Habitat III, a UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development held in Quito, Ecuador. The participation was mediated by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), which invited Viração to be part of the book Habitáts justos, diversos y sustentables: contribuiciones ciudadanas para solucionar desafios urbanos (“Fair, diverse and sustainable habitats: citizen contributions to solve urban challenges”), launched during the event. The publication gathers reports on how nine Latin American cities adapted their realities to the New Urban Agenda, designed to achieve the sustainable development of urban centers. Viração team contributed with an article produced by the young Ethel Rudnitzki and Viração’s journalist Bruno Ferreira. The text reflects on human rights, mobility and the “right to the city” in São Paulo, being the only article portraying a Brazilian city in the book.

Resource Mobilization With the structuring of the institutional development area, in 2016, the resource mobilization department was created, triggering the implementation of new funding strategies. The main goal of this structural change is to ensure Viração’s financial health and sustainability. In this sense, in October, Viração hired a resource mobilization analyst responsible for prospecting notices and funding opportunities, diversifying sources of funds, implementing a fundraising program for individuals, and establishing a network of relationships with partners. The analysis of resource mobilization data shows that, in 2016, approximately 42% of the proposals submitted were approved, resulting in the raising of a total of R$ 1,609,986.

Campaigns By the end of 2016, the departments of communication and resource mobilization developed a test campaign for donor recruitment called Amigos da Vira (“Friends of Vira”). Although the campaign did not achieve the expected results, it reversed in learning experience for the next fundraising strategies.

Mission and Vision Faced with the need to reflect on its current moment, in the light of history, and to confront it with its past, Viração went through a revision process of its mission and vision. The goal was to adapt the organization’s mission and vision to the current understanding of what Viração does and intends to do. Thus, Viração chose to carry out a three meeting immersion process in partnership with Instituto Fonte, seeking points of detachment or estrangement from past definitions. Through this deep process, the mission and vision of Viração were reviewed along with the team and the board of adolescents and youth, and adapted to internal and external changes with great influence within the organization.

Governance Through a thorough institutional evaluation process, in 2016 Viração reformulated its governance proposal. As the organization’s founder, Paulo Lima, is currently away, the team chose to hire an institutional coordinator that would focus on managing people, fundraising, and financial and administrative managing. In March 2016, a coordinator was hired. The change initiated a reflective process about Viração’s strategies, operations, attributions and organizational culture, which allowed the prospection of new strategies for the upcoming year. In 2017, all members of staff will have a self-development plan, as well as performance evaluations.

Volunteering In 2016, Viração elaborated its volunteer policy in order to meet with the volunteer work legislation in Brazil. In 2017, the organization will be able to consolidate a volunteer program. Although there was not a consolidated volunteer program in 2016, Viração had collaborations from three volunteers on the Institutional Board’s activities.
