ANOTHER MAZEL MOMENT A Bar/Bat Mitzvah Overview for what’s new in 2014 One of the biggest influences on bat and bar mitzvahs today is the trend toward personalization. This trend encourages families to be thoughtful and creative while capturing the teen’s personality in unique and stylish receptions. Celebrations are carefully crafted to reflect the guest of honor’s favorite foods, colors and interests. One example of the personalization trend is the evolution of the party theme. It's becoming more popular for the theme to simply be the guest of honor! You can showcase all of the teen’s favorite things, including fashion, sports, technology or candy. In addition, many families are choosing to turn the bar/bat mitzvah's name or initials into a logo that can be used throughout the event as well as on party favors. There is also a growing emphasis on integrating philanthropy into the celebration. We’re seeing more charityinspired bar and bat mitzvahs, where the teen’s mitzvah project
is highlighted, tzedakah donations are made (sometimes in lieu of favors!), and other choices are made that give back to the community. Entertainment is another party element influenced by the personalization trend. The always-popular photo booth is being accompanied by teen activity stations for creating custom party favors. Personalized phone cases, t-shirts, candy bars are just some of the really cool things that guests are going home with. There are also many interactive games and social media tie-ins that are now very much in style, giving guests an opportunity to do more than just eat, drink and dance. Wedding 101 Professional Advice Can Help You Avoid Pitfalls Before They Arise
A
s a planner, I always hope that the clients will come to my office before doing a single second of research, visiting venues or meeting with vendors. Between Facebook groups, Instagram and Pinterest, brides and grooms can easily be overwhelmed by all of the options and ideas that are out there. What's worse, are the "data reports" which go over how much the average wedding costs and how to keep that cost even lower. I've never found any of the tips offered to be worth anything. And what's worse is that there really isn't hard proof of what the "average" wedding costs. Nationwide surveys are useless because ,unless you're planning a wedding in Kentucky, you're going to pay New Jersey prices, and no morning show should be able to tell you differently. This is why I want to meet with my clients before they look at a single magazine, watch any shows or listen to any advice. I want to hear what they really want and to really assess the budget we are working with. Too often clients will throw too much money at one particular item, and then come to me with limited funds to put towards every other expense. I like to break down their budget in a way that makes sense before asking them to spend a dime. It's all about prioritizing and, in the end, realizing that weddings are going to be expensive, to an extent.
They don't have to break the bank, but they will be expensive. New Jersey is home to many amazing venues, both traditional and different. Some are better known than others, but new venues open up every year in The Garden State. No matter what you're looking for, the style and the right venue can be found right here. When clients come to me, I go through exactly what they are looking for in a venue, right down to the smaller details. There have been countless times where clients hire me and have "buyer's remorse" with regard to their venue. I have stood through many appointments where the bride asks me dozens of times, "but do you really like it?" and "is it OK?" I feel awful for these brides because I know they will never be happy with their venue and there is nothing I can do about it. They have put down thousands of dollars and will put down thousands more, yet never be happy. I wish, and I hope couples hear me when I say this, that my clients would come to me, without a venue picked out and let me help them. Together, we can find the perfect place. Experience With Jewish Weddings For a Jewish wedding there are some additional skills required, such as designing a chuppah (wedding canopy) and understanding the regulations of the temple in terms of décor. For this reason it’s essential to work with a florist who has experience designing Jewish weddings.
2. Budget and Logistics This is a critical place to start the floral planning. Once you have chosen the venue and location, and determined the wedding party and guest count, you can start visualizing your flower choices and how many will be needed. You need to consider the following: bridal bouquet, wedding party bouquets and boutonnières, flowers for parents and other honored guests, florals for the chuppah and aisle, and possibly the temple bimah. Then of course there’s the reception decor and table centerpieces, flowers to decorate the cake, and a floral arrangement for the escort table. It can add up quickly, so it is important to get a realistic and thorough proposal from your florist.

Most event photographers today are fabulous in the area of proposing a fashion magazine style of photography. The trend of many photographers are using Photoshop to create edgy high contrast images. Having a high definition look. There is still a large percentage of clients that want a true and natural documentation of their special occasion. These clients are very sophisticated and expect elegant simple, natural images to tell the story of the most special day. This is called a documentary style. Style tells a beautiful story from a multiple of perspectives. Many feel a documentary approach has value 25 to 50 years later. Ira Casel A Bat/Bar Mitzvah or wedding is a significant moment in the life of a family. The day is one suffused with emotion, nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future. Of course, there are ceremonial aspects of the day which need to be captured in photographs. These are the photographs that one expects - the candle lighting, the bar mitzvah boy lifted high on a chair, the walk down the aisle, couple’s first dance. No doubt, these photographs should be beautiful. Yet, mitzvah or wedding photographs must be more than a mere record of the day’s events. The photographs are all that families are left with after the music stops, the lights come up, the food’s been eaten and the decorations are dismantled. They should record the often hidden moments in between. To be successful, the images captured must embody the emotions and personalities of their subjects. The photographs must reveal the subtleties of the individual human experiences of the day. Authentic expressions, gestures and interactions should abound. The final images should evoke gasps and grins. Looking at the proofs should give the viewer goose bumps. This is what family event photography can be. This is Ira Casel Photography.

A New Bakery On The Block That Will Delight Your Taste Buds What do you do when you have a very special event and need some delicious delightful treats for your guests? A new kosher-certified bakery in Springfield, New Jersey, Delightful Cake Kreation, offering a variety of cakes, cupcakes, cake-pops, cheese-cakes, pies, cookies and even challah has caught our attention. This family-owned business is a true labor of love for owners Marsden Ricketts, Brian Dyce and Joanita Ricketts. All three were born in Jamaica, but moved to New Jersey some 20 years ago. Delightful Cake Kreation opened in December 2012. A few weeks after opening, Rabbi Mark Mallach, a Conservative rabbi who leads Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield stopped in. Was this Bashert zein? Rabbi Mallach asked Ricketts if he would consider becoming koshercertified. The bakery was already using kosher ingredients and making all their products from scratch so the
transition would be easy. “We wanted to be a true community bakery, servicing Springfield and all the surrounding towns so becoming kosher-certified certainly allows us to do that”. Delightful Cake Kreations is now Kosher-certified under Mallach’s supervision. The Meaning of Shema-OR by Orna Simkhai The most important Jewish prayer, the Shema, is a declaration of faith and pledge of allegiance to G-d, commanding us to love G-d with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our might. The Shema is to be worn close to the head and the heart. G-d dictates that the Shema prayer be contained in the mezuzah that we affix to our doorposts (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Shema-Or Jewelry (Or meaning light) contains the first verse of the Shema prayer in Hebrew: "לארשי עמש, וניקלא יי, "דחא יי "Hear O Israel, The L-rd Our G-d, The L-rd is One”
In 2006, Shema-Or designer Orna Simkhai, saw a compelling story about a 19-year-old soldier who lost both his legs in the Second Lebanon War. Deeply moved by his bravery and beautiful spirit, Orna decided to reach out to the soldier at Tel-HaShomer Hospital in Israel. The visit fostered a deep connection between them, and
Orna was determined to help him. She designed the a pendant with the first verse of the Shema prayer in Hebrew, and decided to donate the sale proceeds to the recovering soldier. The soldier was so moved by her project, and had told her that he recited the “Shema” when he was severely wounded on the battle-field. Demand for the pendants has increased dramatically, because when you purchase Shema-Or jewelry, you know that you are helping people in need. Orna's outreach now includes a religious elementary school in Kfar Yonah and Beit Ariel, and a High School for children of low-income families in Beer Sheva. Orna has also extended her aid to a community of Ethiopian girls who immigrated to Israel and are in need of clothes, and books. We have been able to help Ethiopians in Israel buy computers, pay for a teaching certificate and just enjoy life a bit more. Some of the money has gone to help and cheer up wounded soldiers from the last Lebanon War.
