A Letter From The Director

Dear Parents and Friends, Welcome to our 36th Dance Spectacular! Regardless of ability, age, shape or size, everyone can share a passion for dance! This has been our philosophy since the beginning and that is why we present a show where every student knows the choreography and is prepared for their performance. When the curtain closes, not only are our students better dancers but they are also better people! They have learned discipline, commitment to excellence and to be more confident. They have learned to persevere and have developed excellent teamwork skills. These values will last a lifetime, long after their dance recital is over! I am so pleased and proud to present our students to you this evening in a wonderful celebration of dance! My staff and I are so excited to work with your beautiful children each week, inspiring them to be the best that they can be in the most beautiful art form of all time…dance! We believe that children and teens who dance are happy, focused, committed, proud, inspired, passionate, healthy, smart and confident! We as dance teachers believe we are not just teaching steps. Dance is a powerful art form that can heal our soul when we are hurting. It can help us forget when we are overwhelmed. It can inspire us to keep on going. It encourages us to work hard to achieve a goal so that we learn to follow through with our commitments. Only a small percentage of young dancers will move on to a professional career, but the lessons learned in dance are lifelong lessons as students discover the results of their hard work and determination when their dances come together to delight you…..the audience members and parents! Nothing can move an audience quite like good dancing. Each student in the show has worked hard and memorized their dance routines so they can share their joy and emotions with you. From our youngest preschooler to our most advanced student, each one will try to do their best for you, for their teachers, for their classmates and most importantly, for themselves. Movement makes us feel good! Doing our best makes us feel good! Put it all together and you get an enjoyable uplifting show that we know you will enjoy. We encourage our students to work hard to make their performance a success, whether they dance once a week or every day. Each child feels an extremely important part of our show! By polishing their dances before they step onto the stage,

ON OUR COVER: “THIS JOINT IS JUMPIN” 2014 Dance World Academy – Dance Company BACK ROW (L TO R): Nicole Greene, Emily Valdes, Damani Van Rensalier, Malcolm Young, Amanda Majer, Amanda Nowakowski, Samantha McKoy MIDDLE ROW (L TO R): Brealyn Vazquez, Cara Valencia, Jasmine Corazon, Angelina DeLeon, Stephanie Carleo, Syera Plitt, Mariah Martinez, Amy Domenack FRONT ROW (L TO R): Dana Tagliaferro, Sarah Filipczuk, Doriana Lacitignola, Sasha Zaldana, Lanysha Wesby, Maya English, Ariana DeLeon NOT PICTURED: Jennifer Esserry

our students feel more confident and enjoy the happiness and self satisfaction that comes from a job well done. Dancing may look easy, but believe me, it’s not. Memorizing the routine, executing correct dance technique, performing in time to the music, staying on the correct foot, keeping in the right formation while smiling can be truly challenging. Our students deserve a huge round of applause! Each year, we strive to make a fun, beautiful and tasteful show that our students are proud to be in and that you, our audience can truly enjoy. Our show is produced with professional Broadway quality lighting and sound, creative costuming, and scenery. We strive to make our dances age appropriate in both content and ability level. We teach correct dance technique and incorporate the most up to date dance styles. Whether a student is dancing for fun, fame or a little of both, our dance programs provide wonderful educational benefits. Our program allows for self expression, an emotional outlet and exercise that educational researchers say can perk up a child’s mental processes making them better students in school. Our program teaches focus and discipline. Researchers have discovered that true self esteem is built through genuine accomplishments and praise that is truly earned! THANK YOU PARENTS for being here with us today and for believing in Dance World Academy and the standard of excellence it represents. We know that you have sacrificed a lot to give your children a fine dance education. We appreciate your support of our program and the policies necessary to maintain our high standards. Your children are lucky and blessed to have such encouraging and supportive parents! THANK YOU STUDENTS for your outstanding hard work and dedication. Thank you for understanding that when people care about you - they want the best from you. Thank you for giving us that. Our faculty is very proud of you and values the opportunity to be part of your life. THANK YOU TO MY STAFF AND FACULTY for your true belief in excellence and your dedication in time and effort to achieve it! I am very fortunate to have you all in my life. You are truly amazing people who inspire me daily with your spirit, enthusiasm and encouraging words! THANK YOU AUDIENCE for sharing this wonderful performance with us. It is hearing your applause that makes performing on stage such a unique and delightful experience. Thank you to my incredible loving family, my wonderful husband who is ALWAYS there when I need him, my beautiful Dana who makes me smile every day, and my Sholpan who taught me to believe in miracles until you make them happen. Enjoy the show!!

Donna Farinella Owner-Director of Dance World Academy ENTHUSIASM - ENERGY - CREATIVITY MOTIVATION can certainly be used to describe Donna Farinella’s unique approach to dance teaching. She holds a B.A degree in dance from Douglass College of Rutgers University. She is one of the most accomplished dance educators in America and an exceptional spokesperson. A cover story on Ms. Farinella appeared in the August 2006 issue of Dancer Magazine, a nationally published and widely respected dance magazine. An interview with Ms. Farinella also appeared in the American Diary portion of the Royal Academy of Dance Gazette, a worldwide publication detailing the activities of the Royal Academy of Dance Programs. Ms. Farinella has been teaching dance since the age of thirteen when after each of her own dance classes she would run home, gather up the neighborhood children and conduct lessons in her backyard. As a teacher, choreographer, and director, she strives for excellence in everything she does. She employs teachers of only the highest caliber and dedication who share her vision of excellence in the classroom. Under her direction, she and her staff spend hours and hours in the dance studio motivating and encouraging students to be “the very best they can be and not settling for less.” This has earned Dance World Academy students a national reputation for dancing with nearly flawless precision, exciting energy, outstanding technique and radiant enthusiastic faces. Her students have received thousands of awards in the most prestigious competitions in our country today. In 2006, she took 13 award winning Dance Company members to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia for a ten day Performance and Study tour to promote cultural exchange and friendship. In September of 2008, Dance World Academy represented the United States at an International Cultural Festival in Shanghai, China. During Thanksgiving of 2009, the Dance Company traveled to Berlin, Germany to represent the United States in a dance festival celebrating the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Last year, the Dance Company performed at Disney World on Disney’s televised Christmas special and this summer, the Dance Company will be performing in London and Paris!

World, Tokyo Disney, at the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey and countless other regional theaters, on cruise ships, in National Touring Companies and on Broadway in “Newsies”, “Wicked,” “42nd St,” “Fosse,” “Contact,” “Footloose,” “Annie,” “Les Miserables,” “Sweet Charity,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Cats,” “The King and I,” “How To Succeed In Business,” “Chicago,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Promises Promises”, “South Pacific” and “Aida.” Dance World Academy alumnae, Christopher Gatelli, has choreographed numerous Broadway and off-Broadway shows including “South Pacific,” “Thirteen,” “Batboy: The Musical,” “Altar Boyz” and “tick, tick...BOOM!”and “Newsies” and has won a Tony award as Best Choreographer on Broadway! Miss Farinella’s students can be seen in entertainment and artistic venues all over the world. Many are currently working with companies like Alvin Ailey and have formed their own contemporary companies. Alumnae, Austin Diaz, is making headlines around the world performing with famous modern dancer, Sidra Bell and creating his own work with partner, Jonathan Campbell and their dance company, “Madboots”. Miss Farinella’s students also have been accepted into the most respected college dance programs in the United States, including New York University, many on full and partial scholarships because of their excellent dance training.

Ms. Farinella has taught, judged and lectured at workshops and dance competitions throughout the United States, most notably for Dance Educators and Dance Masters of America, the two top dance teacher organizations in the United States. Her students have performed and won on the Nationally televised STAR SEARCH, the “American Idol” of its’ day. They have performed for former President Reagan during his presidency, appeared on television on Glee, Dancing With The Stars, Ellen, Good Morning America, CSI:NY, Cold Case, The Today Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Nickelodeon’s Don’t Just Sit There, and danced on the soap opera The Guiding Light. They have performed or are currently performing professionally at Lincoln Center, in Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, at Radio City Music Hall, in theme parks which include Opryland, Hershey Park, Busch Gardens, Disneyland and Disney

She is extremely proud that Dance World Academy was named one of the best dance studios in the country by Dancer National Magazine and that she was named “Dance Teacher of the Year” in 2003 by the Dance Educators of America at their National banquet in New York City. Dance World Academy was also named one of the 50 dance studios to watch by Dance Spirit Magazine.

Aside from directing and encouraging her caring teaching staff, Ms. Farinella continues to teach and choreograph at Dance World Academy full time. Her innate creativity has led to the birth of the clever gimmicks, themes, costumes and production numbers that you will see in this performance. In 2008-2010, Miss Farinella and the Dance World Academy faculty taught a talented and gifted dance program for the Passaic Public School System. Ms. Farinella’s philosophy is that “When you strive for excellence, you can be proud of your accomplishments. You can’t fool kids. Kids know when someone really cares about what they’re doing.”

Ms. Farinella continues to bring top teachers from around the country into the Dance World Academy classrooms and also holds memberships in DANCE EDUCATORS OF AMERICA THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF BALLET ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE – one of the most prestigious ballet organizations in the World.

What I Learned from Dance World Academy… Besides Dancing!! B Y O U R 2 0 1 4 G R A D U AT I N G S E N I O R S KRISTINA AZEVEDO: Spending the past fifteen years dancing at Dance World Academy has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Dance World Academy taught me much more than dance. It taught me about the value of perseverance, teamwork, energy, and self-confidence. I will use all of these throughout my life. Dancing for so many years at D.W.A. has truly influenced my life in a positive way. Dance World Academy will always have a special place in my heart.

TANASIA DIXON: Growing up, I’ve always loved to dance. Being a dancer at Dance World Academy has given me the opportunity to do what I love. Besides dancing, Dance World Academy has also taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. Over the past 8 years, I’ve gained a great amount of knowledge, not just from my teachers but also from my peers. As my journey at Dance World Academy comes to an end, this experience will never be forgotten. Thank you to Miss.Donna and all the teachers I’ve had who helped me grow and blossom into a confident individual. Dance World Academy and all its joy will definitely be missed.

VICTORIA BARCO: My 15 years at Dance World Academy has taught me to never give up and keep trying and that's what I'm going to take with me as I enter college. I made amazing friends and I have have had amazing teachers. I'm going to miss Dance World Academy and I treasure the amazing memories that I have made.

NICOLE GREENE: "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." – Walt Disney I’ve learned many life lessons at Dance World Academy that I will take with me as I go through my next journey in life. I have witnessed from my teachers and peers extraordinary qualities such as being a hard worker, dedication, and determination. As I go into my next chapter in life, I hope to always keep these qualities with me; because I know with these qualities, I will go far in life no matter what I do.

TENIA BRADLEY: At Dance World Academy I learned to always try until you succeed and that failure isn’t an option. Dance World Academy has taught me when I fall to stand right back up. Because not trying again is just as bad as never trying at all. I will always hold the value that ambition is the key to life.

TAMEKA MCNEIL: “Opportunity dances with those already on the dance floor." – H Jackson Brown Jr.

JASMINE CORAZON: "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined." – Henry David Thoreau

During my three years at Dance World Academy, I've learned to dance as one. I also learned to work hard and stay focused. I thank my teachers for showing me tough love and pushing me to be the best I can be and I thank Dance World Academy and their staff for caring. I truly appreciate it.

Throughout my years at Dance World Academy I learned much more than just the art of dance. I learned that setting a goal and working hard to achieve it is important. I learned to surround myself with people that push me towards bettering myself. Dance World Academy has taught me to believe in myself, and that through hard work, dedication, and passion, anything is possible.

4

AMANDA NOWAKOWSKI: Being a dancer at Dance World Academy for 15 years has taught me that I can accomplish anything if I put my heart and soul into it. I have learned that I can master what at first seemed truly impossible because I have a strong dedication to reach my goals. I have been taught never to accept anything less than my best, even while no one is watching, because my work behind the scenes is going to follow me into the real world. Furthermore, it has been engraved into my soul that I will never know what I can truly achieve until I take my last breath on Earth, so I should never stop trying to improve. I have learned to never give up on myself, no matter how hard I am struggling, because I can never fail by trying. I can only fail by not believing in myself and never knowing how far I could have soared throughout my lifetime. Most importantly, at Dance World Academy I have been told never to let an opportunity pass by because once it is gone, it is gone forever.

KUTIA SWINNEY: Besides dancing, these past ten years have taught me how to be coordinated and motivated. I have learned that it takes hard work and dedication to achieve in life. Teamwork is what counts. It was such a pleasure to learn jazz techniques and move on to higher levels. Performing onstage brings me joy and laughter. I thank God for allowing me to express myself through dance. Thank you Mrs. Donna Farinella, staff, teachers, and dancers for providing me years of excitement and lessons at Dance World Academy. I will keep dancing!

IMANI WILLIAMS: At Dance World Academy ,I learned so much in a short period. I want to say thank you to Ms. Donna because this year has been the best year for me. I've never been pushed so much before. They wouldn't let me give up, especially during pointe when I got discouraged. They showed me that I was my own biggest competitor. Thank you to the rest of the teachers for making my experience here so grand.

OLIVIA O’DONNELL: During my 14 years at Dance World I learned with hard work and dedication anything is possible. Dance World Academy means so much to me. I will never forget everything I learned and the friendships I've made. I have become a hard working and persistent person, not only in the studio, but in life as well. Thank you so much for all the opportunities you gave me.

Our graduates would like to thank their wonderful supportive families without whom their dance experiences would have been impossible. They love their families and appreciate them for the many sacrifices they made in order to support their dancing! They appreciate them more than words could ever say!!

Dancers…

• Gain a sense of balance in life by managing their commitments to both dance and academics; • Participate in a physical activity that enhances understanding of the value of a healthy body; • Develop a sense of confidence when speaking or making a presentation in a public setting, which is also a great benefit in college or job interviews; • Work with mentors who are focused on the students’ success inside and outside of the classroom; • Enjoy friendships that could last a lifetime and a sense of belonging to an extended family of fellow dancers, teachers, and parents; • Discover the results of hard work and determination; • And develop a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts. 6

DANCE WORLD ACADEMY

Dance Company 2014 The Dance World Academy Dance Company was founded in 1979 to help students who wanted to dance more than just recreationally to work with a strongly committed group of people to achieve high technical and artistic goals. Just as students join a sports team, our Dance World Academy Dance Company provides an excellent outlet for the students whose favorite activity is dance. All students are considered through teacher recommendation. We look for students who have the talent, determination and the work ethic to achieve at a much higher level than what can be accomplished in a once a week recreational dance class. Students must be able to attend outside of class time rehearsals and have the parental support to pay for competitions and bring students to extra rehearsals. The students listed below have devoted a lot of time and energy to dance and have achieved outstanding top awards and high scores in competitions throughout the Nation. Aside from competitions, our Dance World Academy Dance Company attends field trips and conventions to broaden their horizons in dance. They are also eligible for performance trips like the ones we have taken to Disney World, Russia, China and Germany! This summer the Dance Company is traveling to London and Paris for a first class Performance tour! Wow! Our Dance Company is led by our Director, Donna Farinella and our Chief Executive Dance Teacher, Debra J. Wolter. The many other fabulous D.W.A Faculty members who work with our Dance Company are Yessenia Ledesma, Marie Arellano, Natalie Ward, Josette McWilliams,J.P. Dance World Academy Scholarship Winners 2013-2014 Dance World Academy offers a yearly scholarship audition for Dance Company members. The purpose of this audition is to learn skills and proper conduct when auditioning. In order to secure a job in the professional dance industry, students must learn how to audition for a dance job. Dance World Academy invites a professional dancer into the studio to conduct the audition. All scholarships are given in memory of Miss Farinella’s mother, Margie Farinella, who was the first Office Manager of Dance World Academy. She sadly passed away from Breast Cancer during the first year that our studio was open in 1979.

By polishing their dances before they step onto the stage,

our students feel more confident and enjoy the happiness and self satisfaction that comes from a job well done.
