New this season, we present “Live! at the Winningstad.” This four-performance series in the Winningstad Theatre showcases emerging musical artists, as well as artists you know and love, that you will be talking about for years to come. Kicking off the series will be Brazilian singer-songwriter Bebel Gilberto. Returning to the schedule is the critically acclaimed Hip Hop Nutracker. This modern spin on the holiday classic will have you cheering for more. As we strive to create programming that celebrates all cultures, some of the highlights in the 2018-2019 season include Café Tacvba, Mexico’s leading alternative rock band; Soweto Gospel Choir, direct from South Africa, thrilling audiences with a 20-member ensemble; and Skerryvore & We Banjo Three, Scottish and Irish music blasting with urban rock, pop and funk influences. Our education program welcomed over 13,000 students from Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington County Title I schools to our venues. For many students that attend these education programs, it is their first time inside a theater. The look of wonder and excitement on their faces is pure joy. This year, participating artists include the Pianist of Willesden Lane, Hip Hop Nutcracker, and National Geographic Live speaker Nizar Ibrahim, and Mandy Harvey. These are your venues and we look forward to welcoming you here soon. Let us know how we can serve you better by contacting me at 503.248.4335 or robyn@portland5.com. Thank you!

Café Tacvba

Cafe Tacvba is widely recognized as Mexico’s leading alternative rock band and indeed one of the most influential alternative groups to come out of Latin America, spearheading a non-conformist musical movement with their blending of elements such as rock, indigenous folk, electronic and punk music. With a career spanning over 25 years, they continue to expand an already massive audience of devoted fans throughout the Americas, Europe and beyond. Being a live band is in their DNA: they originated as a live act with a cult following, refining their music through multiple performances before ever recording.

Wednesday, September 12 8:00pm

The lyrics are in Spanish, however their songs - rooted in Mexican culture yet incorporating multiple genres and influences - cross barriers with a musical language that is constantly evolving through experimentation and collaboration. They don’t so much honor rock traditions as break with them. TICKETS: PORTLAND5.COM | PORTLAND’5 PRESENTS | 5

Currently they host the hit series Penn & Teller: Fool Us! for The CW Network, where up-and-comers and magic veterans try to fool Penn & Teller for a chance to star in the duo’s hit Las Vegas stage show. Since then, they have performed in over 35 countries worldwide, played at David Gilmour’s 50th birthday celebration and were even joined on stage by Rick Wright.

In The Mood

IN THE MOOD, a 1940s musical revue, has been touring the world for a quarter century. Many of the music arrangements for the show were written by Hollywood arranger Vic Schoen (1916-2000). During his illustrious career, Vic furnished music for some of the most successful personalities in Hollywood, i.e. Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, the Andrews Sisters, and countless others too numerous to mention.

Sunday, September 16 2:00pm & 7:00pm

The unique combination of the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra, the IN THE MOOD singers and dancers as choreographed by Broadway veteran Alex Sanchez, will be the highlight of the season in a musically jam-packed performance. Treasures such as Swingin’ on a Star, Tuxedo Junction, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Sing Sing Sing, Chattanooga Choo Choo, I’ll Be Seeing You, La Vie En Rose, Take the A Train and The Last Time I Saw Paris are just a small part of a program that will leave audiences cheering. Gabriel Royal Saturday, September 29 8:00pm It takes a while for Gabriel Royal’s musical style to strike you. His songs build up slowly, the arrangements between his singing and cello playing pulling you in and… you are hooked. You might think that’s too long of a time to pay attention to music nowadays, then think about how it took Gabriel five years busking on the New York city subway to finally get noticed and have his first album recorded. Influenced by Stevie Wonder’s groove to Burt Bacharach’s relaxed, jazzy yet poppy sensibilities, Gabriel’s trademark sound is his singing over a cello, the result being an easy listening modern chamber pop. 10 | PORTLAND’5 PRESENTS | TICKETS: PORTLAND5.COM

LIVE! At the Winningstad is an

original music series presenting emerging artists as well as known favorites. These are the musicians on the edge of breaking out and could be performing on the arena stage in the near future. You can say that you were there first, that “you saw them when” and you made that connection with the artist in a personal, intimate venue. Portland’5 has searched

the globe for musicians that will tingle your earbuds with flavorful notes of beauty. From Chamber pop to Americana to Latin pop, these songwriters will have you cheering for more. Since all these shows are performed in the 330-seat Winningstad Theatre, it will feel more like a personal serenade than a staged concert. Get your tickets now because they truly are limited. We’ll see you LIVE!

Gina Chavez Friday, October 26 8:00pm Gina Chavez is blending the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. A multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress, Chavez is a nine-time Austin Music Award winner— including 2015 Musician of the Year and Album of the Year for her sophomore release, Up.Rooted. Her independent album topped the Amazon and Latin iTunes charts following a national feature on NPR’s All Things Considered, and has been hailed by The Boston Globe, USA Today, Texas Monthly and the Austin Chronicle. Her band’s Tiny Desk concert made NPR’s top 15 of 2015.

Dori Freeman Thursday, November 8 8:00pm Dori Freeman grew up in a family of bluegrass musicians, raised on a diet of Doc Watson and the Louvin Brothers. So far, Freeman’s success owes as little to modern country as it does the standard career-building tools of young artists. No brand partnerships, an Instagram account that’s much more personal than promotional, though, yes, she’s still on Facebook. An unnervingly grounded 26, she states her goal as “try to make good music and hope people listen to it” with a sure finality. “I just hope that I can sustain a career doing this for the rest of my life.” Her music blurs the finer lines of Americana and shines new light on the legacy of traditional music. SOCIAL BY NATURE Ronan Donovan , Photographer

What’s a human? We are, at our core, social mammals. We build relationships, communicate, reproduce, establish territories, and adapt to shrinking resources. In these ways, we’re no different than other social mammals. Chimpanzees, wolves, gorillas, and bears are among the most charismatic. We identify with them as species, groups, and even as named individuals. They’re also under threat. Join biologist turned photographer Ronan Donovan as he talks about his work in documenting these animals and what we, as fellow social mammals, can learn from them.

Dorado Schmitt and The Django Festival Allstars The Django Festival Allstars bring the music of the great gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt fully into the 21st Century. Their unique, high-energy performances pay tribute to Reinhardt, who is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Reinhardt’s driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz.”

Tuesday, November 27 7:30pm

The Django Festival Allstars follow in their footsteps taking the music beyond with original compositions, hip improvisations and some of Django’s lasting greats. This “hot swing” form of jazz has its roots in American popular music and in the reverence for Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and other top American jazz figures. They swing like crazy and will break your heart with a ballad. Each of them are composers and while this music can harken back to the great music of the past, their interpretations, arrangements, virtuosity, and original compositions bring a newness to Django’s style and take it beyond. Viva’s Holiday:

Album Release and Concert Performance Viva’s Holiday: An Opera in One Act played to full houses and earned glowing press in its premiere run in 2015. Described as a “touching, intimate family drama” (Oregon ArtsWatch), it is a lyrical story about a young woman on an unconventional path, testing the limits of family acceptance during a visit home. It is also a love song to the Portland underground and the experience of courageous self-discovery.

Saturday, December 15 7:30 pm

This concert performance of the opera celebrates the release of a new original recording of Christopher Corbell’s original score. Soprano Jocelyn Claire Thomas sings the role of Viva, with Sadie Gregg, Dan Gibbs, and Ray Jackson completing the cast and with twelve-piece chamber orchestra conducted by Erica Melton. The libretto is based on the memoir of Portland stripper, spokesperson, and writer Viva Las Vegas. Viva’s own vocal group Bergerette will also perform, offering selections of French secular vocal music from the Medieval and Renaissance eras. TICKETS: PORTLAND5.COM | PORTLAND’5 PRESENTS | 29

Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez Sunday, March 10 6:00pm

Part of the romance of Mariachi songs is they convey “all things are possible.” The humor, the spirit, and even the bittersweet, inspire us to a world where we live out our dreams. Unprecedented, unrivaled and uninhibited, the impact of Jose Hernandez and his Sol de Mexico® on mariachi and all music is undeniable. After forming Mariachi Sol de Mexico® in 1981, Jose’s charismatic arrangements and signature trumpet playing made the group an instant and lasting success: Sol de Mexico has played to sold out halls from New York’s Lincoln Center to Viña del Mar in Santiago, Chile. They were the first Mariachi group to play concerts in Beijing, China and Pyongyang, North Korea. Sol de Mexico also played for four U.S. presidents including performances at the White House! But more than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the mariachi tradition that courses through Jose’s veins into audiences’ hearts.

Ranky Tanky

“Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” This Charleston, South Carolina-based quintet performs timeless music of “Gullah,” West African meaning of “a people blessed by God,” born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.

Monday, April 1 7:30pm

South Carolina natives Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Charlton Singleton, and Clay Ross first came together in 1998 to form a seminal Charleston jazz quartet. Now, united by years apart and a deeper understanding of home, these accomplished artists have come together again, joined by celebrated vocalist Quiana Parler, to revive a “Heartland of American Music” born in their own backyards. The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. BROADWAY What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify.
