Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles
KEENE STUDIOS LLC
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we enter the second half of our 2017– 2018 program, it’s amazing to look back at all that’s happened in the first half of the season. Lyle Lovett provided a delightful season opening performance in July. During the summer on Main Street dancers, young crafters, and farmers market visitors looking for a little entertainment found our Summer Arts on Main event that was followed with our annual Music on Main Street series—all for free! The Hip Hop Nutcracker cast performed to a capacity crowd at the Schnitz, after sharing a master class in break dancing at Jefferson High School.

One of Portland’s beloved icons, the “Portland” sign at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, underwent a $500K restoration to its original splendor and to preserve this beautiful landmark. With LED lights, new neon letters and other upgrades the sign will continue lighting up Broadway for many generations to come. We also completed work on several projects in our venues, including replacing all of the lighting fixtures in the Newmark Theatre—475 devices in total—to provide better illumination, ease of control, and increased safety and energy savings. Now in its second full year, our Education and Community Engagement Program provided free, outstanding performances to thousands of Title I students, many of whom had never seen a professional performance before. The diverse range of performers introduced these young audiences to new and exciting genres of music, taught them about distant planets and far-flung corners of the Earth, and exposed them to forms of expression that made them think differently about the world and their place in it. The feedback from the kids warmed our hearts—many wrote to say the performances inspired them and made them see new potential for themselves. We are proud to bring students who have not had the opportunity a chance to visit THEIR theaters! We thank all our employees, partners, funders, volunteers, and most of all—YOU, our audience—for supporting our efforts in bringing the best talent we can to all of our communities!

RHINOS, RICKSHAWS, AND REVOLUTIONS Ami Vitale, Photojournalist Monday, January 22, 2018 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
Since beginning her career covering such stories as the conflict in Kosovo and the disputed Pakistan-India border, photojournalist Ami Vitale has let one principle guide her work: to live the story. That means she’s gone to tremendous lengths to capture the power of the human spirit even in the face of adversity—living in mud huts, contracting malaria, and braving civil war in Guinea-Bissau. But soon, another philosophy began to overtake her work: “you can’t talk about humanity without talking about nature.” Thus, she chronicles her journey from documenting warzones to helping to reintroduce rhinos to the wild, and donning a panda costume to remain anonymous among the giant mammals. Tickets: $25–45

BETWEEN RIVER AND RIM: HIKING THE GRAND CANYON Kevin Fedarko, writer | Pete McBride, Photographer/Filmmaker Monday, February 19, 2018 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
In an effort to share the Grand Canyon’s uncharted glory and shed light on the myriad threats it faces, writer Kevin Fedarko and photographer/filmmaker Pete McBride set off on an audacious and demanding adventure this year: to transect the length of the canyon on foot. This trek is not the pair’s first adventure together, but it may be the toughest. An award-winning photographer, writer, and filmmaker, Pete has traveled to over 70 countries for a number of publications and companies, including National Geographic Society, Outside magazine, Patagonia, and The Nature Conservancy. A passionate conservationist, Pete has been named a “Freshwater Hero” by National Geographic. Kevin left his post as a top editor at Outside magazine for the dusty abyss of the Grand Canyon. Kevin is the author of The Emerald Mile and his work has been featured in National Geographic Adventure, Esquire, and Time, among other publications. National Geographic Live–Between River and Rim: Hiking the Grand Canyon is sponsored by Grand Canyon Trust.
The mission of the Grand Canyon Trust (GCT) is to protect and restore the Colorado Plateau—its spectacular landscapes, flowing rivers, clean air, diversity of plants and animals, and areas of beauty and solitude. GCT connected with Pete & Kevin during their Canyon expeditions, and are extremely excited to support their US tour. Tickets: $30–50
PINK BOOTS AND A MACHETE Mireya Mayor, Primatologist & TV Correspondent Monday, March 5, 2018 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
A former NFL cheerleader and daughter of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Miami, Mireya Mayor followed her unlikely dreams. In short order, she became a respected primatologist, audacious explorer, and Emmy Award-nominated wildlife correspondent for the National Geographic Channel. Mayor’s adventures have taken her—armed with little more than a backpack, notebooks, and hiking boots—to some of the wildest and most remote places on earth. She’s survived poisonous insect bites, been charged by gorillas and chased by elephants—and keeps going back for more.
BRENT STIRTON
On a National Geographic-supported expedition in Madagascar in 2000, Mayor discovered a rare new species of mouse lemur, then believed to be the world’s smallest primate. Her discovery inspired the prime minister of Madagascar to establish a national park to help protect the new species, conserving the 10 percent that remains of the African island nation’s once vast forest. Currently hosting the Nat Geo WILD series Wild Nights With Mireya Mayor, Mayor has been hailed as a “female Indiana Jones,” and an inspiration to young women interested in science and exploration. She’ll share stories, images, and film clips of her adventures, offering a behind- the-scenes look at the hardships and danger of life in the field, along with the moments of discovery that make it all worthwhile. Tickets: $25–45

“A Night With Janis Joplin will rock your world!”
–Los Angeles Times
“Exhilarating ... Remarkable ... A joyful ruckus”
–The Washington Post
Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Now, Portland is invited to share an evening with the woman and her musical influences in the hit musical A Night With Janis Joplin. Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby” and “Summertime,” this sensational show is a musical journey celebrating Joplin and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends. The New York Times raved that A Night With Janis Joplin “rocks the house” and Variety called it “electrifying.”

The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts lift us up. - Barbara Jordan

EDUCATION PROGRAM MISSION: To offer culturally relevant education programming as part of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts’ commitment to celebrate diversity and broaden access to the performing arts for people of all means, cultures, and ethnicities.
THE EDUCATION PROGRAM: Through our Education Program Portland’5 Centers for the Arts provides access for students to a diverse selection of world-class lectures and performing arts by offering free performances in our venues and in the community, career shadow opportunities, summer internships, and curriculum support. Our Education Program intentionally seeks and supports teachers and students in Title-I schools. Focusing on Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, our programs enhance the education and arts experience by providing curricular materials that connect what students see on the stage with what they experience in the classroom. In our inaugural 2015–2016 season the Portland’5 education program served over 6,000 students and staff from Multnomah county schools. In our 2016–2017 season we served over 13,000 students and staff.
NEED: WHAT’S INSIDE Lack of arts education opportunities disproportionately affects students and families from lowincome households and communities of color. Many attend schools that do not provide comprehensive arts programming if any at all. Additional barriers to the arts include limited access to transportation, lack of expendable time, lack of disposable income, little or no exposure to the arts, and a misperception that the arts are exclusive.
IMPACT: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has reported that youth exposed to the arts have better academic outcomes, higher standardized test scores, higher career goals, and are more civically engaged. The 2012 study The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies found that eighth graders of low socioeconomic status who had high levels of arts engagement from kindergarten through elementary school showed higher test scores in science and writing than students who had lower levels of arts engagement. For more information: The National Endowment for the Arts, www.arts.gov 19

FROM THE ANNUAL REPORT
Portland’s place for arts With five outstanding venues and a dedication to creating connections between art, audience and community, Portland’5 Centers for the Arts is changing the world through the arts. We’re the fifth-largest performing arts center in the nation, hosting or presenting more than 1,000 annual performances that contribute significantly to our shared culture and regional economy.
Total spending Total jobs Total earnings Total tax revenues
$104.4 million 1,050 $41 million $3.3 million
Bringing the performing arts to Portland-area kids Thanks to an expanded reach and exciting, innovative programming, our Education and Community Engagement Program reached more than 13,000 kids in its second year. Portland’5 partnered with school districts and community organizations in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties to bring a diverse range of performances to low-income students, both at our theaters and in the community, all at no cost to the schools. For 80% of the students who attended, it was their first time seeing a professional performance at a theater. Inviting, engaging shows like classical/hip-hop duo Black Violin and National Geographic Live’s Kobie Boykins, an African-American NASA engineer instrumental in the Mars Rover project, made all of the kids feel right at home.
In their words: Kids respond to the performances “Dear Portland’5, I appreciate so much what you did for our fifth-grade class. It is important for kids to see Black Violin, to teach that most stereotypes are not true. The music was amazing, especially how they used a classical instrument for hip hop music.” Chehelam Elementary School Student
“Thank you for the nice music. I hope you know you inspired me a lot more than you may think.” Sixth grade student, on the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Brighter lights on Broadway: The Portland sign gets a facelift An Oregon icon—the famous -“Portland”- sign at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall—got a major tune-up this year. We renovated the 33-year-old sign, giving it a fresh coat of paint, new neon letters and other improvements to protect it from corrosion and fading. Now it’s back up and good as new after a relighting event in August. The 65-foot-high sign first went up in 1928, when the theater opened as the Portland Publix Theatre. It’s been lighting up Broadway in some form since then, with the current design introduced when the theater opened as the Schnitz in 1984.

THE SERIES OPENS WITH JAVIER ZAMORA AND STEPHANIE ADAMS-SANTOS. JAVIER ZAMORA is the author of Unaccompanied (Copper Canyon, 2017). Zamora is a 2016–2018 Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and is a 2016 Ruth Lilly/Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellow. He holds fellowships from CantoMundo, MacDowell, Macondo, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Yaddo. She is a Guatemalan-American writer, educator, and tarot reader, and the author of Swarm Queen’s Crown (Fathom Books, 2017), and several chapbooks, including Little Fugues (Sola Books, 2015) and The Sundering (Poetry Society of America, 2009), which was selected by Linda Gregg as winner of the New York Chapbook Fellowship. Adams-Santos’ poems have appeared in many print and online journals and magazines, including Guernica Magazine, The Boston Review, and Orion.

KELLER AUDITORIUM CELEBRATES ITS 100th BIRTHDAY On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the Keller Auditorium commemorated its 100th birthday with an “open house” featuring a four-hour, mixed repertory program performed by dancers from OBT2, musicians from Portland Opera, Bravo Youth Orchestras, Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, Mariachi Una Voz and the Oregon Symphony Orchestra. The celebration was presented to the community for free as an opportunity to celebrate and experience all that the Keller and these great performing arts organizations have to offer. In the lobby of the Keller, the lively crowd gathered for refreshments and visitors entered their name into a drawing for free show tickets. Booths hosted by local performing arts groups presented information on their seasons and on the first floor, an instrument petting zoo attracted the many kids and families, who escaped Portland’s rainy weather to experience the event. The Musicians of the Oregon Symphony celebrated this historical day at the Keller with a world premier of Give them Space, an original composition written by Christopher A. Corbell for the centennial celebration. Corbell’s composition for string quartet honors the venue as a cornerstone of our city’s shared experience. In notes on his new work he writes: “Let’s give space to that which is aspirational and creative. Let us honor this physical space and all of the human expression and enjoyment it has facilitated.” The auditorium building as it stands today looks much as it did after the 1968 renovation, with the notable exception of a $1.5 million upgrade in 2000, financed by Richard Keller in his father Ira’s name. Richard Keller attended the ceremony with his wife Ruth and grandchild, and reflected on the importance of the arts space for his family and Portland’s public in a short speech. As a public performing arts venue, the Keller Auditorium continues to play an important role in our region, supporting local arts organizations and hosting inspiring performances, while cultivating a love for the arts within the Portland metro area’s diverse communities. Keller Auditorium is owned by the City of Portland and is managed by Portland’5 Centers for the Arts. THE PORTLAND SIGN RETURNS “The Portland sign has been a landmark for three decades, and is a fitting tribute to the original sign that hung on the Paramount Theatre before 1984.” –Robyn Williams, Executive Director of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts.
The 65-foot-high “Portland” sign first went up in 1928, when the current Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall opened as the Portland Publix Theatre. In 1930, the sign was changed to say “Paramount,” as the theatre was contracted with that studio to show Paramount films. When the theatre opened as Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in 1984, the sign was changed back to say “Portland.” Over the course of nine days in August, Tube Art Group from Bellevue, Washington, installed the newly renovated sign. The three month renovation involved detailed metal and electronics work, installing new support structures, a new lightweight aluminum shell, new neon letters, updated efficient light fixtures, and a new coat of weather- and UV-resistant paint, which will keep the sign safe from Portland’s notorious weather for years to come. A re-lighting and dedication ceremony took place on Main Street on August 16th, attended by hundreds of local members of the community. In addition to live music and dancing, attendees listened to treasured memories and personal stories of the Portland sign and our venues from Portland’5 Executive Director Robyn Williams, Metro Exposition and Recreation Commissioner Karis Stoudamire-Phillips, City Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, and Metro President Tom Hughes. The $500,000 renovation project was funded by the Portland’5 Centers for the Arts Capital Fund. Learn more about the Portland sign and renovation project, and view timelapse videos of the sign removal and installation at: www.portland5.com/signrenovations.
