For our 2017–2018 season, we’ve crafted a program spanning diverse styles of performance for all ages. In August, sixtime Grammy and six-time Latin Grammy award-winning legends Los Tigres Del Norte perform at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The “king and queen of the banjo” Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn take over the Newmark to celebrate the release of their latest album in November and we’ve got Hip Hop Nutcracker with MC Kurtis Blow coming this winter to get the entire family in the holiday spirit with a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ and violinist.

Dracula: The Music and Film with original music by Philip Glass, performed by Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet (Michael Riesman, Conductor) to Universal Pictures’ 1931 film classic, Dracula (starring Bela Lugosi).
Kevin Cobb (Trumpet); Louis Hanzlik (Trumpet); Eric Reed (Horn); Michael Powell (Trombone); John D. Rojak (Bass Trombone) “The members of the American Brass Quintet breathe as one, provide effortless well-matched phrasing, and generally produce a superbly balanced, fine golden sound.” –Los Angeles Times Hailed by Newsweek as “the high priests of brass,” the American Brass Quintet is internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles of our time, celebrated for peerless leadership in the brass world. As 2013 recipient of Chamber Music America’s highest honor, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award for significant and lasting contributions to the field, the Quintet’s rich history includes performances in Asia, Australia, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Canada and the United States; a discography of nearly 60 recordings; and the premieres of over 150 contemporary brass works. Committed to the development of brass chamber music through higher education, the American Brass Quintet has served as Ensemble-in-Residence at The Juilliard School since 1987 and the Aspen Music Festival since 1970. Since 2000, the Quintet has offered its expertise in chamber music performance and training with a program of short residencies as part of its regular touring. Designed to offer young groups and individuals an intense chamber music experience over several days, the Quintet’s residencies have been embraced by schools and communities throughout the United States and a dozen foreign countries. Through its acclaimed performances, diverse programming, commissioning, extensive discography and educational mission, the American Brass Quintet has created a legacy unparalleled not only in the brass community, but in the chamber music field at large.
There have been many screen versions of Bram Stoker’s classic tale of Dracula, but none more famous or enduring than the 1931 original. Starring Bela Lugosi as the world’s most popular vampire and directed by horror specialist Tod Browning, Universal Studios’ Dracula creates an eerie, chilling mood that has rarely been realized since. Dracula: The Music and Film features new music by composer Philip Glass who was asked to create the first original musical score for the re-release of Dracula on video. In this early “talkie”, there was no musical score and few sound effects. Browning relied on Lugosi’s legendary Hungarian accent to give the film its distinctive sound. Glass composed the intense and sweeping Dracula score specifically for the Kronos Quartet. Dracula: The Music and Film is a unique reinvention of an American cinematic classic—the perfect marriage of the live and the undead. $49–89

ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL
A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

$45–80
Tony Award-winning icon Idina Menzel has a diverse career that traverses stage, film, television and music. Menzel’s voice can be heard as Elsa in Disney’s global box office smash “FROZEN,” in which she sings the film’s Oscar-winning song “Let It Go,” and in the follow-up short, “FROZEN FEVER.” After Menzel’s performance of the multi-platinum song at the 86th annual Academy Awards, she made history as the first person with both a Billboard Top 10 hit and a Tony Award for acting. Menzel capped 2016 with the release of her fifth solo studio album, idina., and filmed Lifetime’s remake of Beaches, set to air January of 2017, in which she portrays the role of CC, made famous by Bette Midler. Garnering huge critical acclaim, Menzel reached superstardom on Broadway with her Tony Award-winning performance as Elphaba, the misunderstood green girl in the blockbuster WICKED,” and in her Tony-nominated role as Maureen in the Pulitzer Prize winning RENT. Menzel’s most recent Broadway role as Elizabeth in the original production IF/THEN earned her a third Tony nomination. $60–130

KAKI KING Saturday, October 14 • 7:30pm WINNINGSTAD THEATRE
“Watching Kaki King perform is like seeing guitar-playing for the first time. With both hands curling over her instrument’s neck, she hammers, plucks, strums, drums, and slaps at frets, strings, and body. The effect is of sculpting rather than of playing music.” –NY Mag “Calling Kaki King a guitarist does her a disservice. The post-rock composer and musician is a consummate performance artist who does things to her instrument most self-identified guitarists could never even imagine, much less replicate.” –Washington City Paper
Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” composer and guitarist Kaki King is a true iconoclast. Over the past 13 years the Brooklyn-based artist has released eight extraordinarily diverse and distinctive albums, performed with such icons as Foo Fighters, Timbaland, and The Mountain Goats, contributed to a variety of film and TV soundtracks including Golden Globe-nominated work on Sean Penn’s Into The Wild, and played to an increasingly fervent following of music lovers on innumerable world tours. $28

The electrifying trio of Glen McDaniel, Nick Villalobos, and Zack Clark, together known as Simply Three, has been captivating audiences worldwide with high-octane performances since 2010. Acclaimed as “having what it takes” (Boston Philharmonic) and “highly imaginative and well played” (Maine Today), Simply Three continues to receive praise for their ability to impress listeners with a multitude of genres that span from Puccini and Gershwin to artists such as Adele, Coldplay, and Michael Jackson. By reshaping convention through this style of genre hopping, the trio continues to seek the true essence of classical crossover with original works as well as innovative arrangements that showcase their technical virtuosity and heartfelt musicality. With an ever-growing online popularity, Simply Three is creating a renewed excitement for instrumental music through inventive music videos that have captured the hearts of millions of YouTube viewers across the globe. Furthermore, their works have gained great critical recognition by publications such as The Huffington Post, Rolling Stone, and RyanSeacrest.com, as well as mainstream artists themselves. Chart-topping rockers OneRepublic praised Simply Three’s version of their hit single “Counting Stars,” exclaiming they “LOVE this ‘Counting Stars’ cover!” Additionally, GRAMMY®-nominated R&B sensation Janelle Monáe proclaimed the trio’s project of her hit singles “Cold War” and “Tightrope” to be “an honor” while making it a highlighted feature of her personal website. Simply Three has old school training but a new school sound. Their quest to look beyond the scope of possibility has led them to collaborate with some of the world’s most creative musicians, including Kellindo Parker (Janelle Monáe) and Jeff Smith (M-Pact), in hopes of creating a new, fresh genesis for string playing. LAS MIGAS Sunday, October 29 • 7:30pm WINNINGSTAD THEATRE
FLAMENCO AND MEDITERRANEAN MUSIC FROM SPAIN Las Migas is unique among Spanish music groups, a fascinating blend of flamenco and Mediterranean styles that combines classic and contemporary rhythms, and melodies that range from powerful to passionate to playful. The four women of Las Migas come from four different cities that span not only the geography of Spain but also its cultural diversity--Barcelona, Sevilla, Cordoba and Lerida. The two Andalusians are the guitarists: Marta Robles, the veteran, and Alicia Grillo, the most recent and youngest musician of the group. The two Catalans are Alba Carmona on vocals, and Roser Loscos on violin. They all came to the group with one common passion: Flamenco. You can hear it in the rhythms of the guitarists, the dancing violin lines, and the raw power of the vocals. Alba is also a gifted dancer. The new Las Migas live show, recently launched, contains many surprises. For the first time, Alba presents a special choreography featuring dance and vocals, filled with sensuality and self-confidence. The concert begins with a very intimate and personal approach, and as it builds in emotional intensity it showcases the exquisite, heartfelt style that has always characterized the music of Las Migas. $30 *Ticket prices do not include service fees.

BÉLA FLECK AND ABIGAIL WASHBURN Monday, November 27, 2017 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine), have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a sixteen-time Grammy Award-winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. The pair performs music from their self-titled debut for which they took home the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. The two met at a square dance, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here, a benefit there, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn would produce a full-fledged project together as a duo. Sure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But, when the banjo players are Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, it’s a different matter entirely. Whether at home, on stage or on record, their deep bond, on top of the way their distinct musical personalities and banjo styles interact, makes theirs a picking partnership unlike any other on the planet. Fleck has the virtuosic, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments, from writing concertos to exploring the banjo’s African roots to jazz duos with Chick Corea, have had many tout that he’s the world’s premier banjo player. Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter who has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums. She has also done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China, presented an original theatrical production, contributed to singular side groups Uncle Earl and The Wu-Force, and become quite a live draw in her own right.

The album features fifteen tracks, including fresh takes on ten classic carols and five brand new nostalgia-inspired originals, penned by bandleader, Tony Guerrero. The disc is ripe with clever jazz arrangements, tight vocal harmonies and features a variety of instrumentations including a five-piece jazz quintet, a full big band and lush string orchestrations. Both Jane and Kate are well known for their comedic abilities, and while the album has several fun, lighthearted moments, there are also plenty of deep, rich and even serious musical moments to balance it out. $49–69 *Ticket prices do not include service fees.

Terry Virts, NASA Astronaut Monday, October 2 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space. $25–45 Full series subscriptions available for $130–230

BETWEEN RIVER AND RIM: HIKING THE GRAND CANYON Kevin Fedarko, Writer | Pete McBride, Photographer/Filmmaker Monday, February 19, 2018 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE
In an effort to share the Grand Canyon’s uncharted glory and shed light on the myriad threats it faces, writer Kevin Fedarko and photographer/filmmaker Pete McBride set off on an audacious and demanding adventure this year: to transect the length of the canyon on foot. This trek is not the pair’s first adventure together, but it may be the toughest. An award-winning photographer, writer, and filmmaker, Pete has traveled to over 70 countries for a number of publications and companies, including National Geographic Society, Outside magazine, Patagonia, and The Nature Conservancy. A passionate conservationist, Pete has been named a “Freshwater Hero” by National Geographic. Kevin left his post as a top editor atOutside magazine for the dusty abyss of the Grand Canyon. Kevin is the author of The Emerald Mile and his work has been featured in National Geographic Adventure, Esquire, and Time, among other publications. National Geographic Live–Between River and Rim: Hiking the Grand Canyon is sponsored by Grand Canyon Trust.
The mission of the Grand Canyon Trust (GCT) is to protect and restore the Colorado Plateau—its spectacular landscapes, flowing rivers, clean air, diversity of plants and animals, and areas of beauty and solitude. GCT connected with Pete and Kevin during their Canyon expeditions, and are extremely excited to support their US tour. $30–50

Ami Vitale, Photojournalist
NEWMARK THEATRE
Monday, January 22, 2018 • 7:30pm
A former NFL cheerleader and daughter of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Miami, Mireya Mayor followed her unlikely dreams. In short order, she became a respected primatologist, audacious explorer, and Emmy Award-nominated wildlife correspondent for the National Geographic Channel. Mayor’s adventures have taken her—armed with little more than a backpack, notebooks, and hiking boots—to some of the wildest and most remote places on earth. She’s survived poisonous insect bites, been charged by gorillas and chased by elephants—and keeps going back for more.
NEWMARK THEATRE
Since beginning her career covering such stories as the conflict in Kosovo and the disputed Pakistan-India border, photojournalist Ami Vitale has let one principle guide her work: to live the story. That means she’s gone to tremendous lengths to capture the power of the human spirit even in the face of adversity—living in mud huts, contracting malaria, and braving civil war in Guinea-Bissau. But soon, another philosophy began to overtake her work: “you can’t talk about humanity without talking about nature.” Thus, she chronicles her journey from documenting warzones to helping to reintroduce rhinos to the wild, and donning a panda costume to remain anonymous among the giant mammals. $25–45 Full series subscriptions available for $130–230

PORTLAND’5 PRESENTS | 2017–2018
On a National Geographic-supported expedition in Madagascar in 2000, Mayor discovered a rare new species of mouse lemur, then believed to be the world’s smallest primate. Her discovery inspired the prime minister of Madagascar to establish a national park to help protect the new species, conserving the 10 percent that remains of the African island nation’s once vast forest. Currently hosting the Nat Geo WILD series Wild Nights With Mireya Mayor, Mayor has been hailed as a “female Indiana Jones,” and an inspiration to young women interested in science and exploration. She’ll share stories, images, and film clips of her adventures, offering a behind- the-scenes look at the hardships and danger of life in the field, along with the moments of discovery that make it all worthwhile. $25–45 Full series subscriptions available for $130–230 PORTLAND5.COM

LATE NITE CATECHISM: SISTER ROLLS THE DICE!
WINNINGSTAD THEATRE
This loving tribute and send-up takes audiences through a laughter-infused version of all six seasons of the beloved show. TJ Dawe—(Director and co-creator of One Man Star Wars Trilogy, One Man Lord of the Rings and PostSecret: The Show) has comedic whirling dervish Kerry Ipema (PostSecret: The Show) bringing all our favorite characters to life as they brunch, banter, argue, support each other and swoon over men and Manolos. There will be puns, cosmopolitans and audience participation. For anyone who remembers the naked dress, the tantric sex demonstration, the post-it note, and “he’s just not that into you,” One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody on Love, Friendship, and Shoes will provide a great reminder of why this series and its characters have stayed so firmly in women’s hearts and minds.

IMPACT: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has reported that youth exposed to the arts have better academic outcomes, higher standardized test scores, higher career goals, and are more civically engaged. The 2012 study The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies found that eighth graders of low socioeconomic status who had high levels of arts engagement from kindergarten through elementary school showed higher test scores in science and writing than students who had lower levels of arts engagement. For more information: The National Endowment for the Arts, www.arts.gov 32
Portland’5 is proud to partner with Chamber Music Northwest, Bravo Youth Orchestra, Red Door Project, and World Affairs Council to provide educational opportunities for students.
The Education Program is funded with support from your local Toyota dealers and the Portland’5 Centers for the Arts Foundation.
NEED: WHAT’S INSIDE Lack of arts education opportunities disproportionately affects students and families from lowincome households and communities of color. Many attend schools that do not provide comprehensive arts programming if any at all. Additional barriers to the arts include limited access to transportation, lack of expendable time, lack of disposable income, little or no exposure to the arts, and a misperception that the arts are exclusive.

THE EDUCATION PROGRAM:
Our Education Program intentionally seeks and supports teachers and students in Title-I schools. Focusing on Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, our programs enhance the education and arts experience by providing curricular materials that connect what students see on the stage with what they experience in the classroom.

The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts lift us up.

Our goal is to provide a welcoming atmosphere to all, through an enjoyable night out at our theatres, and nobody is in a better place to facilitate that than our box office staff. As a part time job, most of the box office staff also work in other fields or attend school when they aren’t working at the Portland’5 box office. It is the excitement of working in the performing arts industry and the variety of shows we get to experience that keeps our staff members here. In fact, five of our staff members each has 25 years of experience working in the box office.

Our box office staff is a diverse group of students and professionals. One thing that unifies them is our commitment to delivering excellent customer service to our patrons. This often means going that extra mile, whether it’s by handing out dog treats for our customers’ four-legged companions, helping navigate the sometimes-confusing world of online ticketing, or providing info on what else to do in the neighborhood, in the case of one of our favorite bits of customer feedback:
We value the trust you place in us with your time and discretionary spending. We love to see familiar faces returning to our windows to purchase more tickets. We truly appreciate your kind words and commitment to the arts, and we hope to see you soon!

HANDS UP Produced by the August Wilson Red Door Project
“Hands Up is transformative!”
October 2, 2017 • 7:30pm WINNINGSTAD THEATRE
Hands Up, a series of seven monologues written by six black men and one black woman, is a reflection of the diverse reactions that emerged in the black community post-Ferguson. Yes, they are stories of pain, but more profoundly, they are stories of remarkable resilience. Director Kevin Jones has chosen to focus on the power in that resilience. As a community, though we must be cognizant of injustice and aware of victimization, that is not what will help us to heal. What helps any individual (or group) to grow and thrive, is being connected to their strengths, gifts, and the ability to emerge from whatever life puts on their path. It’s what builds the capacity to see one’s value—and act accordingly. There’s obviously no single path, except the path that connects us to our wholeness, potential, and humanity. FREE The August Wilson Red Door Project is a nonprofit organization committed to changing the racial ecology of Portland through the arts. On May 2, 2017 members of Bellevue, Washington-based Tube Art Group began carefully removing the 33-year-old sign in segments.
EXCLUSIVE EVENTS
The 65-foot-high “Portland” sign first went up in 1928, when it was opened as the Portland Publix Theatre. In 1930, the sign was changed to say “Paramount,” as the theatre was contracted with that studio to show Paramount films. When the theatre opened as the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in 1984, the sign was changed back to say “Portland.” When the renovation work is finished, the sign will have its corroded steel shell replaced with more lightweight aluminum, new neon letters, updated light fixtures, and a new coat of weather- and UV-resistant paint, which will keep the sign safe from Portland weather for years to come. Renovations on the sign are expected to be completed in the summer of 2017. The $500,000 project is being funded by Portland’5 Centers for the Arts’ capital fund. “The Portland sign has been a landmark for three decades, and is a fitting tribute to the original sign that hung on the Paramount Theatre before 1984,” said Robyn Williams, executive director of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts. “We look forward to unveiling the renovated sign this summer.”
Portland’5 is dedicated to bringing arts performances to as many people as possible, including those who may need auditory, visual, or mobility assistance. We go beyond mere compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act to make sure all of our audience members have an exceptional experience.
