land City Council chairman and chairman of the State Highway Commission Philip J. Deering Sr.), was a rising star, already the president of McDonald Lumber Company of Portland in his 20s.

“Yes, my parents had 11 Fletcher built. We had no nickname for it; it was just home.”

Snapshot In Time

The 1940 census captures the young family. Philip Jr. and his wife Audrey were both 37 years old. Pamelia, named for her grandmother, was 11; her sister, the late Margeis Deering, was 15. Completing the family was Ida Davoe, a maid, 32.

In June of 1942, when Pamelia was 13 and (a student) at Waynflete, her father wore the smart uniform of a Navy lieutenant during World War II. Assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence (later to serve on a Navy aircraft carrier) Lieutenant Philip J. Deering Jr. interviewed survivors from two Maine fishing trawlers sunk by a German U-boat. He reached the drenched men while they were recovering at the Coast Guard Station on Mount Desert Rock. Young Deering’s marvelously exacting notes on the submarine and its maneuvers survive. See the composite sketch, likely drawn by Deering, of the Uboat: https://ericwiberg.com/wp-content/ uploads/2021/03/AEOLUS-Survivor-Statements.pdf.

Among Pamelia’s neighbors was the future actress Phyllis Thaxter, who lived around the corner at 314 Danforth Street. “Yes, I knew her. [There’s a devilish pause on the phone.] She was older!”

According to the Portland Press Herald, March 27, 1949, “Miss Pamelia Deering will be home from Skidmore College [for spring break].” Sadly, she’d been back here just weeks earlier for the funeral of her father, the surprise victim of a heart attack on January 30. “He was just 46.

“My favorite place in the house was on the third floor,” Pamelia says. “I lived at 11 Fletcher till I left to marry. I met my future husband on the tennis court: Herbert Payson III.”
