hen I was a rower, the last part of the race was the hardest. My vision narrowed toward the vanishing point of pain, and I felt myself floating upward and out of the boat with each stroke. We moved, all eight of us, as a single, unthinking animal. Speed was our only destination. We did not think about where our blades sat in relation to the water, but where they were about to be. After we crossed the finish line, we could not hear the small crowd calling for our attention. Not yet. First the rush of water against the shell and the wind blowing against our tingling skin. The honk of a car horn from across town signaled the gust of oxygen rushing to our brains, and there they all were: launches, family and friends, arms swinging in the air as if welcoming us home from a long journey that had finally come to an end. n
