Sure, you could just throw a June wedding, the gold standard. Or take a cue from these couples.

WHAT’S IN YOUR THERMOS? A wedding party in two generations is coming in from a long beach walk after the ceremony. e parental units are out front. Ten feet behind, two young women 19 or 20 years old, maybe cousins, are tiptoeing along with slight blushes and submerged smiles. Each carries a white thermos that looks like an insulated stemless wine glass. We can’t resist. “All right, you two. Before you pass, tell us what’s in your glass.” ey smile and slowly shake their heads. ey’re going to keep us guessing. A red blend, chablis, or Allen’s Co ee Brandy? e colder it gets, the more some of us toast the coast. A balmy variation of this wedding ex-
perience is available with a June wedding, sure, but this is emphatically di erent. ese are not summer people, they’re winter people—at least now they are. e lucky among us are four-season people. We have warm hearts, we’re romantic, and we defy the cold.
SAY “I DO” AT A SKI VENUE
Talk about a li ticket. In Maine, a dreamy venue for a winter wedding is a downhill ski resort. e rooms are already here. e enormous granite replace pops and sputters. ere’s entertainment for all ages, the beauty overload of the Appalachian Mountains, and there’s parking to the moon.
“Yeah, we do that!” says Judy Morton at Saddleback in Rangeley. “One I love is the bride and groom ride to the top of the mountain; then they ski down to the ceremony, so that’s always fun.” Not to mention awesome, because it’s a 2,000-foot drop. “If it’s a small wedding we might close our upstairs pub” so it’s devoted to the event. I'm an indoor person. It’s much more serene. Maine in the summer is just full of tourists from out of state. We have 550 feet of shoreline.” e lake itself is a frosty guest.
As innkeeper, Gosselin doesn’t have time to shovel a big swath on the lake for skating, but “there’s an ice rink nearby in town where people go.” e tiebreaker? “We have an ultimate romance dinner expressly for the bride and groom — a four-course dinner.”
