Dry January

New Year’s resolutions just got a whole lot easier.

BY JEFF LYONS & JASON SINGER

Most like it cold, some like it hot (ever try boiling steamers in beer?), and some even like it dry.

Since Portlander Neal Dow was the father of Teetotaler the Temperance Movement, we’ve Mayor Dow resolved to try some local “dry”–ordered the militia to see if we can to fire on protestors tolerate it. Our city has during Portland's two breweries legendary Rum crafting non-alco holic (NA) beers Riot of 1855. that taste enough like the real thing to vanquish the memory of insipid non-alcoholic beers like O’Douls dispensed by the macro-breweries. Neither Kit NA Brewing in West Bayside nor Eighteen Twenty Brewing Co. in Riverside Industrial Park currently has a tasting room, so we decide to bring beer from both to Schulte & Herr, home of fabulous German comfort food and a BYOB policy. WELLTEMPERED

MICROBREWS Schulte & Herr is cozy and warm in a way that’s especially inviting in the depths of winter. We’re thirsty, and our NA beers quickly address this need. To qualify as NA, a beer must have an alcohol content of less than .5%. All That

Better Blonde ale, Peek Interest American pale ale, and Wave Finder India pale ale from 1820 Brewing Co. all taste true to type, though NA beers lack the finishing flavor kick of alcohol. Kit NA Brewing’s On Your Mark American blonde ale and Get Set IPA also taste as one would expect of these beer styles. Being gentlemen, we prefer the blondes: On Your Mark strikes the right

The feast that follows, featuring mounds of schnitzel, spaetzle, potato, soups, and salads, is delicious and reasonably priced. The meal leaves us fully sated but also missing a bit of a “kick” at the end. This, however, is self-inflicted: another New Year’s resolution leads us to pass on a dessert whose description includes the words “cake,” “chocolate,” and “raspberry.” What were we thinking?! n
