Keeping It Real

R

ecently I got an email from my friend, screenwriter Brian Daly: Hi Colin, I’ve started reading The Meryl Streep Movie Club by Mia March, a novel I found in Hannah’s old room. On page 26, I saw this: “Surely you could become an editor for a regional magazine, like Portland or Down East.” Do you get many job applications from fictional characters? Hunh. When a visitation like that happens, we call our IT exec (and exorcist) Jason Hjort and tighten our spam filter. Melissa Senate’s novel (March is also a fictional name) has Portland Head Light on its front cover. Its cast of characters has one thing in common: beloved film moments are their shared reality. By the way, she lives with us on the coast of Maine in real life. Our staff is very real. Across the years, we’ve braved deadlines together, driven through blizzards together, eaten lobster rolls together at The Lobster Shack, shared pizza at midnight. Our water cooler is the coffee machine! Like all businesses, we’re evolving through COVID, but we’ve never let our emotional connections to each other and our mission become remote. Portland Magazine is proudly owned by Mainers and has been headquartered in Maine for 37 years. Our very real staff wants you to know that our greatest collective joy is when our stories touch you, our readers. We’re so glad you’ve joined our party! In this neck of the woods, fiction and reality are next-door neighbors. Though real to me, my novels Museum of Human Beings, The Boston Castrato, and Red Hands summer in the fictional universe. Early in our history, we were contacted by the producers of Murder, She Wrote, who desperately needed copies of our magazines for their set designs. The reason? Our magazine made the coffee tables in Cabot Cove seem more real. At Portland Magazine, our staff creates stories that help you travel to other worlds, binding together the present, future, and past. Because our motto is “Extraordinary Perspective,” a sense of beyondness slips into everything we do, including going the extra mile for deep, sometimes absurdly exacting context. Our staff does a heroic job keeping it real. No one could care more. You can see it, and feel it, on every page. N.B. My favorite fictional magazine is Millennium in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series by Stieg Larsson. I pay for my subscription with Bitcoin.

Harry Oakes. Changing his citizenship to become a British subject, that was Harry too. Dodging taxes to the point of moving to the Bahamas, also Har-

ry. The trouble with Harry was, if you live too wild a life, you wind up murdered. If you’re Harry’s steadfast older brother Louis Oakes, life is a different matter. Maybe you ask yourself what would Harry do—then do the opposite. (Except when it comes to acquiring fabulous real estate.) LEGENDS OF THE FALL Both boys were born in Sangerville. pher/surveyor, both knew their way around the forest, particularly the Eden-like swath of wilderness surrounding Greenville that included Mt. Kineo and Big Moose Mountain. Louis studied forestry at the University of Maine, graduated, and, constant as the North Star, rose to the position of superintendent of the Hollingsworth and Whitney Paper Co., guiding their activities until 1915. rodigal Harry (1874-1943) went to Bowdoin, got halfway through med school at Syracuse University, then dropped it all to head for the Alaskan gold fields. For fifteen years he traveled the world looking for gold, all the way to Australia.

P

I’M SORRY, WHAT? So it must have stunned Lewis to underwrite his kid brother’s vagabond mining explorations and then read in the newspapers that he’d struck it rich, discovering a $250M gold mine in Northern Ontario, Canada. There’s a legend WINTERGUIDE 2022 15

that Harry was kicked off a train for not having a ticket, and it was at that Kirkland Lake stop, landing on his bum, that he discovered gold. His stupendous claim T-1663 echoed around the world. By 1931, his Lakeshore Mine was the most lucrative gold-excavation site in the Western Hemisphere. Now Harry was everyone’s pal. According to the famously fabulistic sportscaster Bill Stern, Oakes even—while down and out in Baltimore before striking it rich— used his last dollar to buy the orphaned Babe Ruth his first baseball bat. What’s an older brother to do? Louis became a lumber and paper baron up here while young Harry became a real-life English baronet. Which is not to say world-celebrity Harry wasn’t grateful to Louis for giving him his stake. He honored Louis’s early investment with shares in his famous gold mine, so life was good all around. A DIAMOND AS BIG AS THE RITZ ith this windfall, Louis Oakes bought the ruins of the 1880s Kineo House hotel from Maine Central Railroad, brought electricity to Kineo for the first time via an underwater cable, and

created a new hotel on the site to attract the post-World War II crowd. In time he would look on with pleasure as his daughter and son-in-law, Edith and C. Max Hilton, ran the resort for a swank new generation. Flush with noble intentions, Louis built a staggering Tudor mansion for his daughter across Moosehead Lake in 1938– with bold views of Big Moose Mountain and Mt. Kineo. WHAT A VALENTINE PRESENT! That lakefront dream estate still stands, on a 265-acre lot. It tops the Maine Multiple Listings at $12.85M. The mansion itself is 15,470 feet. Oh, is that your Tesla? We see you coming up the driveway. Park anywhere. That blue forever ahead of you that rolls up to the mountains? That’s Moosehead Lake. JOHN SCRIBNER LEADS THE TOUR Bramble—what’d you call it?

The sellers named the estate Brambletye [previously it was called Evergreen Estate and Farm]. They’d named their place in New York Brambletye. There’s a boarding school in England named Brambletye. went to high school. They came to visit the property in February and fell in love with it. That was fifteen or sixteen years ago. FINDING THE LAKE

When Steven J. Bilodeau and his family took the plunge and moved here to Greenville (his wife Leslie has served as chair of the Union 60 School Committee), he was “chairman, president, and CEO of Standard Microsystems Corporation,” according to The Wall Street Transcript. “Prior to SMSC, Mr. Bilodeau spent 13 years with RVSI, where he was most recently president of RVSI’s Semiconductor Equipment Group and a member of RVSI’s board of directors. Prior to that, Mr. Bilodeau was a founder, owner and director of Macrodyne Inc., a startup company that successfully pioneered remote, high-speed data acquisition instrumentation. Mr. Bilodeau holds BS and MS Engineering degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.” “Mr. Bilodeau served as a director of Maxwell Technologies from May 2016 and was appointed chairperson in May 2017 until its sale to Tesla in May 2019.”–(cohu.gcs-web. com/corporate-governance/boardof-directors). What improvements did they make?

They pay no water bills. They realized they had tremendous water resources here, so they set up an irrigation system that’s fed by the property. Imagine a 260-acre estate being 100 percent off the water grid. The entire nine-hole golf course on site is irrigated by this system. [Poland Springs, which owns property nearby, has looked on with interest.] When he bought the property it was ninety acres. Then he added land to the north mainly to protect his flank. The estate now fronts on Foss, Lincoln, Cottage, Norris, Pleasant Street, and two paper roads off Lily Bay Road. You can have plenty of ways in and out. His very thoughtful planning has opened up seven different access points to the property. I hate to use the word development, but [even if this was not intended, this strategy opens up a buyer’s 18 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

We sell a lot of big fancy houses, but Brambletye takes your breath away. It’s a piece of art. Everything’s been restored perfectly to the period [unless it’s a high-tech convenience that Louis Oakes would have applauded]. For example, the original windows were sent back to the same manufacturer who made them and returned like new. The lights are restored to their original condition, the chimneys, the works. Everything is done.

N

What’s your favorite spot?

o question—not even a close second. It’s the kitchen. You can just feel Mom, Dad, the dog, maybe three kids in college, two in high school. There’s a portico where you can pull up to a patio looking across to Big Moose Mountain. It’s the house’s command center. You can slip in and get a bowl of Cheerios while Mom’s making an omelet for the rest of the kids. What would Louis Oakes say if he saw it now?

He’d be so pleased that the present owner has created so many great outdoor spaces to let family and guests take in the bold views of Big Moose, Mt. Kineo, the lake, the lights of Greenville. They were there before, but the sense of them is so much greater. The current owner has created outdoor living space to really enjoy these attractions. When I think of channeling Louis Oakes, if he knew today’s technology, he’d have the expectation that things would have changed. What would astonish him is that so much has been done to restore what JUST ONE MORE DREAM

Toward the end of his life, in the early 1960s, Louis Oakes and his grandson Louis Hilton set aside vast lakefront mountain acreage—an incredible swath of woodland—and provided the vision that would transform it into today’s Big Moose Mountain ski resort. The influence of their gift and energy—call it gold dust—is magnified to this day, as the future of the resort remains key to the economic prosperity of the Greenville area. WINTERGUIDE 2022 19

Or tack into the Eggs Florentine with Sauteed Spinach and Grilled Tomatoes ($14). Now cut across Commercial Street to your astonishing penthouse on the rooftop of Hobson’s Landing ($3.15M). Unit 701 at 383 Commercial Street comes with a 725-square-foot private rooftop deck and swooping, panoramic, seagull’s-eye waterfront views. Everywhere you look, this condo, built in 2021, is soaring to the top. Maybe that’s what happens when Forbes magazine implies Portland is the go-to destination for wealthy retirees and hip young über-execs at the same time. New residents might wonder if Hobson’s Landing has risen from a former warehouse or is brand new. “It’s on the former site of

Deering Lumber,” once a historic Commercial Street business, says listing agent Sandy Johnson. “The deck has views overlooking the river and harbor, Casco Bay Bridge, Fort Gorges, Bug Light.” Nights dazzle above the traffic and under the stars. Three en suite bedrooms and a coveted parking spot in an underground garage put wind in your sails. Enjoy the “concierge service, clubroom, fitness facility, dog wash, community bikes and carshare program” while “living steps from the City’s celebrated restaurants, shops, museums, music venues, and galleries!” As for who’s likely to buy at Hobson’s Landing, “It depends on the price point. Maybe Adele or Ed Sheeran will buy it. Real-estate broker Billy Milliken of Bold Coast Properties owns treeless Duck Ledges Island—all 1.1 acres of it. “I bought it originally in 2007. I built the house with a partner and sold the property in 2009. Just bought it back in 2020.” The attractive interior features pickled knotty pine walls and knotty pine floor, but no heat or plumbing. The location is Eden-like, midway between Acadia National Park and the Canadian Maritimes.

Why would an outhouse have seemed so novel to UK residents (we may be separated by a common language, but the exigencies of plumbing are universal) that a high-circulation tabloid shouted it from the rooftops? “It’s hard to say. I don’t even remember talking to anyone at the Daily Mail. When you’re out on Duck Ledges, you’re roughing it. It would be a crime to have a flush toilet on that island.” Taxes are $1,445.

an we handle yet another 21stcentury success story too wild to be a myth? Warning: this one that got away may keep you up at night. After the original Quoddy Moccasins brand was bought out by Wolverine, “the attorneys forgot to renew the trademark” worth millions. “So we picked it up for $375,” says co-owner Kevin Shorey, 63. That’s right. Three. Hundred. Seventy. Five. Dollars. “In 1997, my wife Kirsten and I wanted to start a Maine shoe company, so I drove down to The U. S.

First I looked up Wigwam. That was taken by Wigwam Sox. Then I looked

up Quoddy.” Gulp. “Wolverine never renewed the trademark. They never renewed the name.” THE OTHER MOCCASIN DROPPED This oversight may have happened because of the wild success of Hush Puppies at the time. “Wolverine used the Quoddy brand but put it under the Hush Puppies slipper umbrella.” Maine’s famous trademark may simply have been lost in the shuffle. LET’S GET STARTED “On March 17, 1997, Kirsten, the president of our company, and I found a blueberry truck from Washington County that had made a delivery in Florida and was deadheading it back to Maine. But we’d located some of the old Quoddy stitching machines” which had wound up in Florida. The WINTERGUIDE 2022 33

Out Is In! For restaurant style-setters, adversity is the mother of invention.

or those of us fascinated with trying to square the circle, is outside really the new ”in”? We’re witnessing terrific ingenuity across the restaurant industry in seizing opportunities afforded by necessary adaptations to a new norm. “From COVID pivot to permanent crowd pleaser, anything outdoors, warm, and unusual is in,” says Kathleen Pierce of Hospitality Maine. “Igloos are multiplying, ice bars are returning, and fish shacks are now the hottest table to score in the state as hotels, resorts, and restaurants double down on their outdoor attractions. The Cliff House in Cape Neddick had a handful of igloos for dining last year—this year they’re adding a bunch more. And the Samoset in Rockland is bringing back their ice bar. In February, look for the outdoor seafood festival at the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth.” Eat Drink Lucky’s Gillian Britt reports that 90.1 percent of her viewers have been asking for more news of outdoor dining

options. “So that market is not going away anytime soon.” Although Harvest on the Harbor was canceled in 2020, it “sold out in 2021. Being open to the fresh air, it was cold, but people loved it, embracing the chance to hear live music and share with others in lively, delicious events.” Maine Restaurant Week, along with Spirit Quest cocktail pairings, is a go for March 1-12 in 2022, Britt adds. Breweries and distilleries are all in for the outdoors too. Britt notes that Oxbow

on Washington Avenue has installed heated A-frames for outside seating, while Batson River Brewing in Kennebunk has brought back its popular fish shacks (reservations required). Allagash on Industrial Way has expanded its outdoorsy space with heated lean-tos, fire pits, and an enclosed heated patio. THANK GOD, MARSHMALLOWS NOT INCLUDED The ubiquitous fire pits and propane heaters that grace Fore River Brewing Company in South Portland glow cheerfully at breweries all over Portland as the days grow dark at Banded, Belleflower, Lone Pine, Austin Street, Rising Tide, and more. Seems every street corner is filled with folks sipping by an open fire or propane tower warming patrons already warmed by robust spirits at Maine Craft Distilling, Hardshore, and Three of Strong in Portland. H UN GRY EY E son’s Point with fire pits and a bar serving Maine-made beers and snacks, or pop into nearby Bissell Brothers Brewing Company, where Peter Bissell promises a “buncha big beers” to come out this winter. Funky Bow Brewery in Lyman also offers skating, along with wood-fire pizza and huge fire pits, as well as a vast translucent tunnel tent for a more sheltered experience. Coastal and inland brewery adventures await as well: Marshall Wharf Brewing Company in Belfast has a waterfront “beer atrium” warmed with wood stoves and chiminea; Freeport’s Maine Beer Company complements its spacious indoors with a heated, covered patio; and Oxbow Beer Garden in Oxford is a winter haven graced with a 200-year-old barn, free access to five miles of Nordic skiing trails, and warming huts with fire pits. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Emilitsa’s space on Congress Street was snapped up in a heartbeat after closing in September and is being transformed into Regards, described by owners as an “L. A.-inspired restaurant that melds the fresh, clean approach of Southern California cuisine which is intrinsically tied to the techniques and flavors of Mexico while highlighting seafood and vegetable dishes from Maine.” Expected opening, January 2022. Also newly opened on Congress (at 229) is the Dirty Dove bar, where A&C Grocery owner Joe Fournier and Michael Gatlin of Owl & Whale feature unique cocktails and a food menu “brought to you by the letters A and C.” NEW YEAR STARTS HERE Other recent openings suggest an industry trend towards an interest in well-being in all ways, including our diets. Soon to debut on Veranda Street, The Grateful Cup will offer “high-quality fruit and vegetable beverages, light fare, and an emphasis on giving back to our community,” says co-own42 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

er Samantha Allen. “Our goal is to have a place to have healthy drinks near where we work” at Float Harder Relaxation Center, owned by two of the four partners in The Grateful Cup. Add to this the recently opened Old Port Nutrition at 23 Temple Street and you’ll catch the drift. The beverages served up by Angela Drinkwater—the self-de-

scribed “only shake and tea guru in the Old Port”—feature probiotics, collagen, fiber, and protein. “Grab a shake after your workouts, or when you forget breakfast or lunch,” Angie says. “Or when you’re feeling run down, grab a tea to get you through your day!” And for healthy Mediterranean-inspired fare, you’ll soon be able to head on over to Dila’s Kitchen at Portland’s Public Market House, where chef-owner Dila Maloney crafts family-style dishes and kebabs inspired by her Turkish heritage. HOLY MIXOLOGY Spring 2022 promises a new and expanded location for Vena’s Fizz House, a cocktail and mocktail bar and mixology shop founded in 2013. Co-owner Johanna Corman says Vena’s 2.0 will be housed in the former Port City Baptist Church at 867 Congress Street and “will hold all the nostalgic charm and passion for beverages and flavors that we are known for,” plus a few new surprises in this “unique space for specialty occasions and mixology classes.” ROLL IT ON OUT Soon Portlanders will no longer have to drive out to Fort Williams Park or Allagash Brewing for those ever-engaging lobster rolls from Bite into Maine’s food trucks.

Come springtime, look for their new takeout location in a large space they’ve rented on Diamond Street in East Bayside! We’ll also have the long-awaited Smalls, a West End neighborhood cafe and market at 28 Brackett Street, where Samantha Knopf—a veteran of the New York City hospitality industry and a former potter, birth doula, florist, set designer, and teacher—will be sourcing goods from smallscale local producers and makers. Next is the anticipation of huge growth in what is already an exploding East End/Munjoy Hill food destination. The Maker’s Gallery, recently opened by Rachel Sagiroglu of Experience Maine, offers a tasting lounge, cafe, and marketplace housed in the former space of Rosemont Market on Commercial Street. Sagiroglu says COVID-induced vacancies presented an opportune time for signing the lease as rents became more competitive for this sort of brick-andmortar venture. Described by Sagiroglu as “an experiential space showcasing products by Maine makers, artisans, and farmers,” the multi-purpose venue includes a gift shop, full-service chef’s kitchen, tasting tables, and casual seating for events where you can expect a “total immersion in all things Maine.” UP, UP, AND AWAY Too long confined, are we now attracted to getting our highs in higher places? Expect a proliferation of rooftop destinations in 2022 following the popular Luna’s 2021 lead with their wide-open space atop the Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront hotel. Plans are in the works at the Westin Portland Harborview hotel to top the Top of the East, and developers of the Time & Temperature Building on Congress also have a rooftop design in the works. Bottom line: these are the times to go literally up and out to eat, drink, and be merry through 2022 in the East End, West End, and all around the town, while safe inland and coastal adventures await too. n

FR OM STAF F & WIRE REPORTS

annabe Your Valentine? The intoxication of Maine’s love affair with

THC and CBD is growing and sweetening the closer we get to V-Day. Maybe that’s what they mean when they say a couple has chemistry. Many of Maine’s cannabis stores are busting loose with imaginative, marketleading chocolates. One touts a “decadent cannabis-infused chocolate bar made of silky imported Belgian chocolate.” Another says, “Our chocolate bars are the perfect

marriage between delicious, fair-trade dark chocolate and rich, full spectrum cannabis oil.” Clearly our state has a glow on. But what makes the cannabis and cacao plants such a mind-blowing match? IT’S ONLY NATURAL “Cannabis contains at least 113 unique chemical compounds known as cannabinoids,” according to the blog Zamnesia. com. “Some of the most famous are THC (the main psychoactive ingredient in the plant) and CBD (a non-psychoactive com-

pound renowned for its medicinal properties).” Chocolate also delivers euphoria. According to “Brain cannabinoids in chocolate” by E. di Tomaso, M. Beltramo, and D. Piomelli (a 1996 study published in the journal Nature), there are three “pharmacological constituents of chocolate whose main target may be the endogenous cannabinoid system of the brain.” SO IT’S FATE Chocolate and cannabis were always highschool sweethearts, even if they didn’t WINTERGUIDE 2022 47

agles, ghost traps, crashing waves. “Friends and family loved our wedding because of the island vibe,” says Alex Hitchcox, who married her husband, Doug, on the artists’ colony of Monhegan Island. “It’s the feeling of escape and being together in one place. You don’t have to worry, drive, deal with traffic. Once you get to Monhegan, you can take a big exhale.” THE SERENDIPITY FACTOR “You’re away from it all, out in nature,” says Katherine Jameson, destination wed-

ding planner and owner of Katherine’s Event Planning of Bar Harbor. “Almost every wedding I’ve planned in Acadia, you will always have a seagull go by.” You know those scene-stealers. “It’s the air and the surroundings that make island weddings special.” “I planned a wedding in Islesboro for a couple who wanted to get married in the backyard of their family’s beloved island home,” says Kristina Slocum, owner of Purple Orchid Weddings + Events in Topsham. “Imagine the Maine coast as your

background. Think ocean breeze, beautiful weather, and calm waters.” The hitch went without a hitch. But still… PLAN B IS FOR BOAT “Expect the unexpected,” Jameson says. “No matter what island, the planning has to be spot on to make it all as seamless as possible, especially since transportation for the guests, catering, and furniture is through barges and ferries. A different challenge was to “bring the guests onto a cliff in Acadia safely, when some of them had handicap issues.” Still another wedding looked like it was going to be ruined by rain when something cinematic happened: “It started to rain a little bit, but we always have a rain backup. With the drops of rain coming down, and the boats in the distance, the view of Casco Bay from Peaks Island was magical.”

ISLAND IMPROV “The biggest challenge was the unpredictable weather,” Hitchcox says. “We were married on the southeastern side of Monhegan. We rented chairs from the school on the island.” Braced for rain, “we got lucky with a beautiful day.” Could “letting go of control” be the source of some of the excitement here? Not to mention the even bigger question mark of COVID. “We originally sent out save-the-dates to 130 people,” says Megan Keizer, who married her husband, Timothy, on Westport Island. “After COVID-19 hit, we ended up having 25 people. My mom officiated! But I loved how small our wedding ended up. The view from the cliff was beautiful.” The microcosm of an island lets you “see how much changes and stays the same throughout the years—kind of like marriage!” n

Let’s Talk.

One day, I really felt like Maine lobster— hadn’t had it in forever. We walked and walked. I can’t remember the name of the café, but it was right on the water, a funny little place. hen I was first born it was Etherea. She had a soft Irish accent. She was the one who kind of guided me through a lot of the stuff I didn’t understand. When I had scarlet fever as a child, a gentleman came to me in a Friar Tuck robe. White hair. Dazzling blue eyes. In 1987 I was living on Hahn Air Base in Germany, working for a magazine called Frankfurter Ring that featured [paranormal accounts of the unseen] by people with different modalities. My sister Heather, 23, and her husband Tom, 25, were coming home from a wedding, just a quarter of a mile or less from his parents’ house in Wells, Maine. They were driving a silver car, something like a Toyota hatchback, when they were killed in a crash. At my home an hour and a half from Frankfurt, my sister came to me.

COURTESY VICKI MONROE

Yikes. Thousands of people lost their lives during the World War II bombing of Frankfurt.

It’s a very spiritual place. I saw many different entities who just walked the streets. But it’s not just there. There are many in Maine too.

At the time he was working for Beneficial Finance. Hated it. He never wanted to work behind a desk. After they gave him eight months to live, he left work and started coaching baseball and basketball. He told me, “Hey, I’m supposed to be dying. Yet I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.” Years ago, you’d have been called a…

amnesia, where we’re kind of talked out of what we know and sense. It’s a blindfold?

Have you ever looked at a person and felt I know you somehow? It’s a feeling, or knowing. It’s the same thing with a place. A really comfortable or endearing place may be a place you knew in a previous life. That’s why we want to go to certain places we’ve never been. No one is born hating. No one is born a racist or a homophobe. The physical is so easy to manipulate. It comes down to: do you listen to your intuition or your brain? Across time, the brain gets sick.

You and Heather grew up in Wells. Now you're in Kennebunk. Are any of your other spirits Mainers?

Not that I recall.

With your insight from the other side, what do you see from the living during COVID?

My Dad. He was born in New Hampshire but lived his entire time in Wells. He was diagnosed with bone cancer at forty-eight.

What’s it like, being you?

I’ve noticed that the hopeful have become even more so. Very negative people will find a way to take this to a dark time when-

ever it happens. Certainly not all of us are sensitives. But has Zoom during COVID made some of us more able to accept communications across other media, even the unseen?

I don’t use Zoom. I have such a bad connection where I live! I’ve used it maybe twice. Do you have a sense of snow? Have your spirits given you an awareness of everyday things like incoming blizzards? I stopped believing in The Weather Channel long ago. Just two weeks ago, a gust of wind blew two shutters from my house, and gusts above 50 knots weren’t even forecast.

Well, what does that tell you, Colin? That I’d shut out all input except that one prediction on TV. I must have been awash with clues, but I was ignoring them.

You are correct. Have you ever seen Smilla’s Sense of Snow?

No. And when I think of it, I’ve never had a spirit tell me the weather, but they can do anything over there. Usually they come in dreams. If it feels [like] you need

You’re born knowing everything since the beginning of time. But then we have soul amnesia. to know the information, they’re going to give it to you. But since you brought it up, have you experienced a sense of snow?

I’m not going to give myself credit for that. I’m given information from the other side. Something like that is given to me when I’m ready to receive that lesson.

I can’t even find an arrowhead. It’s a joke in my family. They’ve even salted arrowheads in my path so they can experience the merriment of watching me step right over them.

What spirits are around me right now?

Do you have a family connection with the Holocaust? Is there maybe an Arthur? An A-sounding name? I see people with yellow stars walking toward a train. Bernard. Several men. Did you happen to have a relative named Mary? She is a little loud, very joyful, very happy.

When you stop looking, that’s when you find it. When things are meant to happen, they do. You’ve explained that so many of our gifts are unexplored. How did you come around to that insight?

NOTIFICATIONS Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. Bottom line: printed publications provide readers with a meaningful and memorable experience. Cummings Printing is a third-generation family-owned company specializing in printing high-quality, shortrun publications. At each phase of the print process, they provide a human-touch that is unmatched by the competition. O U T THE RE Mary was a favorite aunt—we lost her just months ago. I believe everyone in the world is connected to the Holocaust. Do spirits like crowds, like when you go onstage at Jonathan’s?

Yeah, they don’t mind crowds at all. In fact they’re waiting for me when I get there. Before COVID, I’d have 250 at a show— not counting those on the other side. That put me well over 500. Souls on the other side are euphorically happy. They all look young and great and beautiful—they’re at their best. Spirits say you might be the Living; we are the Really Living. Are they music lovers?

Spirits love music. It’s international therapy. Music helps them remember. A song brings them back. Music is huge on the other side. I’ve done readings where I heard a spirit listening to Garth Brooks. Step aside, Mephisto Waltz!

Sometimes they’re young and cool. Like the young couple in Topper? Do the young ones use slang, like “You’re ghosting me”?

Oh, sure! They’ll do whatever is necessary

for the one being read to recognize that it’s them. Sometimes they speak in different languages, and the living person will say, “I tried, but I never could learn that language,” and that’s the joke—that’s how the spirit makes the connection. What’s the most unusual paranormal thing that’s happened when you’ve been onstage?

I’ve never had a soul enter my body—never seen anything dark, demonic. One particular session, someone did “step in” simply because I didn’t understand what they were talking about. They gave me such a headache I had to sit. I’ve had pain before in my life but never something so intense. It knocked the breath out of me. I’m sure you run into non-believers.

Sometimes onstage I get the sense that people can get themselves into such tunnel vision. I’ll ask them questions about whether they’ve experienced [a breeze from the other side] and they’re all, “Nope, nope, nope.” Once I was “reading” a woman, and her husband came along with her. Not a

believer. Nice man, but he was obviously dragged there. I asked her, “Who is Nicholas?” She shook her head. “Nope. I don't know a Nicholas. Nope.” The husband stood up in the audience. “That’s our kid!” What was it like to help police detection as a psychic investigator?

I did that a couple of times. It’s not something I’d do again. Too emotional for the family, too emotional for me. In the case of the young woman [Amy St. Laurent] who was murdered in Portland [in 2001], her mother showed up at my house. So did Amy. She told me where she was: buried out behind his [mother’s] house—[the mother of] the man who killed her. “Make sure they find me before the first snowfall.” When the police called to tell me they’d found her, I looked outside. It was snowing. n Connect with Vicki at Jonathan’s on March 31.

We Are So Happy Mom is Thriving.” “

“As Mom aged, we thought it best if she stayed in her house, but even with hours of care, expensive home Mom wasn’t thriving. She needed more. She especially needed more socialization — not isolation; and reliable access to care when she needed it. So she made the move to Scarborough Terrace. She truly loves her elegant new home! Life is more complete in a community with lots of friends and activities, chef-prepared meals, daily care, medication management, and even transportation to appointments and outings. Let’s Talk.

We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent, Summerguide 2003.

RESTAURANT REVIEW Harborside Restaurant at the end of Harbor Road in Wells (now Hobbs Harborside) during the year of the first Moon landing. Lord’s relocated to this smaller, retro location in 2014. Lord’s wins raves for its lobster stew and excels in many fried-food categories. Tonight, we order a combo featuring jumbo coconut shrimp with mango sauce and fried oysters ($21.99). We’re talking real jumbos, perfectly cooked. When I dip a coconut shrimp into the mango sauce and take a bite, it rockets up to No. 1 on my list. The fried oysters too are crunchy, creamy, and delicious. Thirsty? Local draft beers here include Allagash North Sky stout, and Lone Pine’s Brightside IPA and Time and Temp lager. There’s also wine by the glass.

Usually a walk-on, this slaw wins a Best Supporting Oscar.

Why not blend the sensation with a Fisherman’s Platter—fried clams, fried scallops, fried baby Maine shrimp, and fried haddock ($23.99)? We try this with great success. Of course, both plates come with tasty, satisfying french fries and include Lord’s signature pineapple coleslaw. Usually a walk-on, this slaw wins a Best Supporting Oscar. The tangy kick goes perfectly with fish. This is a pretty stop—great parking, entertaining all around. Make your feast a take-out (in its matching clam boxes) and polish it off waterside at Sanford’s downtown park with picnic tables and views of skaters on the Mousam River. n 86 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

Grist for the

Mill

The rebirth of river towns where hulking mills once darkened urban landscapes is a story unfolding across Maine as repurposed mills hum with hopeful cottage industries in Brunswick, Topsham, Lewiston, Sanford, Waterville, Westbrook, and countless others. The former Pepperell Mill showcases this trend in Biddeford.

y space is located right on an exterior wall—not deep inside the mill—with big windows and tall ceilings, so kids who come for morning sessions get that glowing sunrise atmosphere and the energy natural light provides,” says Amy Bartlett-Goodness, owner of Mill Studio Arts in the historic Pepperell Mill in Biddeford, where she teaches art classes for kids ages three to fifteen. “I was looking around for personal studio

space about five years ago when the Pepperell Mill had some vacancies, so I took a tour and fell in love with the building.” Space matters to this MECA grad with a BFA in sculpture and a Master’s in K-12 art education from Lesley University. “Where you work and create really contributes to what you do. You can feel it when you walk into a special place in an age of strip malls. You can see the mark of history on hundredyear-old floors. My creative juices instantly

started to flow with the inspiration to create a space for children where I could help guide them to become artists.” Susie Haley, who brings her four-yearold son Luke all the way from York to attend Little Art Explorers classes, agrees. “The first time I walked in, the mix of old and new was such a positive vibe it made you want to create. Amy has a little nook in the studio where she does her own artwork, but it’s really all about the kids—and a real lifeline to parents wanting something safe for their little ones to do who haven’t been in pre-school during the pandemic.” “Since I had my own private studio, I could adjust and do things in a way that felt safe, so I worked around school schedules and offered what would fit for families with kids doing school remotely,” BartlettGoodness says. “We don’t use screens; everything is tactile, hands-on, pro-mess. We don’t all learn the same way, and we definitely don’t all learn best from a screen. Typing in Zoom classes is causing a regression in handwriting skills. Kids who are on screens a lot need to hold onto pencils and practice drawing lines and shapes for the handwriting skills we’re losing.” And with them perhaps some of our humanity? BACK TO BASICS “Art is a natural human function,” BartlettGoodness says. “Humans have been creative since we’ve had hands to make things. We’ve been making art since before written language.” In keeping with their setting steeped in history, Mill Studio Arts classes “follow an art history timeline and use materials that make sense for each time period. We’d never use Crayola markers to make cave drawings. We work with flashlights and shadows to make shapes on the wall. Then we use sand and charcoal to imagine what it would be like to be an artist then and have to be creative within the challenges of those materials. When we move on to Greek and Roman art, we talk about geometry and use broken pieces of pottery to make mosaics. We look at fine art and folk art every week, always tying in math and science and geography and history and world cultures to bridge the artificial separation of subjects in school. “We hear all the time that art has no wrong answer—and that’s really different from most of what kids are getting in school all day long. According to Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber, the public school system first arose during the Industrial Revolution “where students... were made to get up and march from room to room each hour at the sound of a bell, an arrangement self-consciously designed to 90 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

LAST WORDS

Enough with the

Winter Shaming! If you’ve got it, flaunt it.

104 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

Enchanted Mountain—the bunny slope with a rope tow at the edge of town— the Rotary club makes an ice slide, and there’s a toboggan race, helmets required. When you’re tobogganing in Québec, you get to look at that beautiful Hotel Frontenac, of course. Our run drops off near the transfer station. Don’t matter, it’s still fun. Each of our toboggan teams have a theme, complete with costumes. This year, the Bouchard brothers won with their Yellow Submarine theme with all of them dressed as the Beatles! In Maine, a lot of the fun festivals are centered around the holidays when you’re too flat-out busy to go. We need something to do in the dead of winter besides swap-

ping crockpot recipes and waiting for mud season. Some towns are leading the charge, like Portland with their Carnaval Maine, Auburn’s WinterFest, the Family Ice Fishing Derby in Harrison. Still, we could learn a lot from Québec’s Carnaval about not just enjoying winter, but getting out there and embracing it. Let’s create some winter celebrations of our own. Heck, we have the clothes for it, and plenty of snow and ice. Because of COVID-19, lots of restaurants built patios and put in those little heaters. And doesn’t just about every town have a craft brewery? We’re more than halfway there. Now, if we could just move Thanksgiving to March! n

H

ave you ever been to Winter Carnival in Québec? My husband Charlie and me have been a couple of times and lived to tell the tale. It’s worth the trip just to see those ice sculptures. And the parades and fireworks. Wow! Throw in the great food, outdoor music and dancing, and a hot alcoholic beverage called “Caribou” (goes down smooth and packs a punch), and you start looking at winter in a whole new way! It’s kind of like the Down Home Holiday Festival where I live in Mahoosuc Mills, Maine, only tons bigger. Our town is decorated real cute and all the stores are open. There’s a horse-drawn sled for the kids out in Bucky DuMont’s field. And on
