Your Favorite Hamburger Joint

ortland teems with restaurants vying to slap the best slab of hamburger meat between two slices of bread. However, you said it (and voted for it) yourself: Little Big Burger is most beloved in Portland because it answers the question, “What if White Castle was made out of real food?” Little Big Burger goes to the grill as a quarter-pound of local ground beef, and leaves it a medium-cooked Burger Planetoid, paired with a sack of perfectly seasoned truffle fries that comes in one size: satisfying. The root beer float is efficiently made in two simple steps: (1) Fill cup with ice cream. (2) Point your ass toward the soda fountain. Says owner Katie Poppe, “We delivered on what we set out to accomplish: Make a tasty burger. Make it local, affordable, and compostable. Add beer. Sprinkle with decent music. Shizza!” Little Big Burger does not front. It does not fuck around. Hell, there ain’t even any plates or trays. Who needs ’em? Slap down some napkins, squirt a healthy dollop of Camden’s ketchup if you so desire, and go to work. izzle Pie has only been open a mere 18 months, but has already won Portland’s heart. Their wide array of crispy, thin New York-style slices—some layered in meat, others in tofu—and hefty selection of beer know how to seduce a diverse audience. “Our employees get it,” says co-owner Mikey McKennedy. “Trying to do normal pizza place stuff with gluten-free and vegan options—it requires a high level of respect.” And the restaurant doesn’t stop at just the slices. Tasty salads doused in house-made dressing and breadsticks dipped in their own Spicy Aardvark blend? Sold! While Sizzle Pie already has two bustling locations open until 4 am, it’s not stopping there. Come fall, the restaurant will welcome the Quality Bar alongside the Westside shop and punch down a wall in its Eastside space to add more seating. ext time you’re biking across the Hawthorne Bridge, do us all a favor. Get off your bike, walk over to the railing, and stop ignoring the blue-gray expanse beckoning below you. And then put on your bathing suit, come back, and wade on in. Contrary to sniggering popular belief, Portland has a kickass—and perfectly safe—watering hole running right through downtown. The Willamette River is gentle, it’s not too cold, and (thanks to the city’s new Eastside sewer pipe) it’s refreshingly poop-free. And when the water’s low enough, you might even find beaches. Don’t believe us? Talk to Will Levenson, who along with Willamette Riverkeeper organizes the annual Big Float swimming and music fest. He dreams of a day when hundreds of harried workers flee their dismal offices come lunchtime and head for the river, and he’s such a believer you can’t help but see it too. “There’s this hidden jewel right beneath everybody’s nose,” he says while standing over the river. “The best thing you can do is go out and swim. ortlanders just couldn’t pick a single love from all the great bike shops in town—River City Bicycles and Citybikes tied for first place in your hearts. The bike shops have a lot in common: Both Southeast Portland stores are over 15 years old, sell all different kinds of bikes, and have solid, stable staffs. “A lot of these guys have been here eight, nine, ten years,” says River City Events Director Alex Criss. “When staff are raising kids and buying houses, it shows you’re a sustainable shop.” River City is the bigger store, selling new cyclocross, road, hybrid, and mountain bikes from its one location, which outfitted a chunk of its parking lot with BMX jumps. Owner Dave Guettler still commutes to work by bike five days a week from Damascus, says Criss. “None of us can ever drive to work, we’d feel like a bum.” Southeast staple Citybikes, which sells both used and new bikes, is one of the city’s only two cooperative-owned bike shops and is known for its boxes of parts priced dirt cheap. They’ll lend out tools to people who want to fix their own bikes, but work on any machine, no matter how old or oddball. “We get all sort of handmade tricycles or crazy trailer conversions,” says co-owner Jon Forney. We bet it’s because all the dancing that goes on in the former auto parts warehouse releases a crazy amount of sexy, sexy pheromones. hen award-winning brewer Christian Ettinger decided to open his own brewery, he knew it needed to incorporate his interests and values: organics, green building, bicycles, families, sustainability, and—most importantly—excellent beer. Resultantly, Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) “is pretty much what I’d call my dream brewpub, in that it’s an amalgam of all the things that I love,” he says. The brewery and pub on SE Powell were built from reclaimed materials. “My dad is an architect, so the aesthetic was always incredibly important,” says Ettinger. “The challenge of creating a great aesthetic with reclaimed material was a really fun journey.” When HUB opened its doors in March 2008, they almost immediately had to revise their business plan to accommodate its enormous success, the all-organic beer proving to be immensely popular across Portland. Hopworks just began offering their remarkable beer in four-packs of 16-ounce cans made from a high recycled content, which are able to be recycled anywhere in the country—just a further reflection of how beer with a purpose has resulted in Hopworks’ decided success. tand-up comedy used to be an afterthought in Portland—a tiny blip on the nightlife scene. These days, though, our local scene is thriving. hile most cities are stuck with soulless multiplexes and—if they’re lucky—one or two art houses, Portlanders are able to choose from a slew of cheap beer theaters, scrappy independents, snooty luxury joints, and soulless multiplexes! So it says a lot that when it came to the votes for Portland’s favorite movie theater, the Laurelhurst Theater won in a landslide. As it has for years, the Laurelhurst continues to book second-run hits and, every week, a different old favorite or cult classic. And while they recently converted to slick digital projection, they kept admission at $4 and still supply as much beer and pizza as one can consume. But owner Prescott Allen says another factor is important. “It helps to have great staff who are knowledgeable about movies and who will recommend films,” he says. “A few days ago a customer came in to watch a film and the previews were just finishing up. They wanted to buy a beer and a slice of pizza, but our manager told them to run in to watch the first five minutes and then come back out. He didn’t want them to miss the opening scene.” The movie in question? “Jeff, Who Lives at Home,” says Allen. “Where he is sitting on the toilet talking about the movie Signs.
