For many of us, fall brings thoughts of quiet as the year winds down. A cozy chair by the fire, a cup of tea, a good book, perhaps. Not so in the PSU College of the Arts! As we begin fall term, we are revved up and raring to go. This year brings an exciting fall production by our lauded Portland State Opera program – a Sherlock Holmes mystery, no less – not to mention a collaborative Theater production exploring the concept of mutual aid, and a Steinway Series featuring Ukrainian-American pianist Inna Faliks, and so many Music and Theater events. Assistant Professor Alberto McKelligan Hernández of the School of Art + Design curates a fascinating exhibition by Mexican artist Nuria Montiel. We are all still feeling inspired by the Cherry Hill stage created by Architecture students at the Pickathon music festival in August, and we’re excited to see the new stop-motion animation studio, soon to come in the School of Film.
We are also taking time to reflect and learn from each other. “The Arts at the Vanguard of Change,” a new conversation series in the College of the Arts, brings together many of our brilliant, thoughtful, innovative scholars to discuss the creative ways they engage the arts while simultaneously paving the way for positive social change. See page 8 to learn more. I invite you to join us for these enlightening conversations and events throughout the College.
Sincerely,
Leroy E. Bynum, Jr. Dean, College of the Arts Portland State UniversityOn the cover: PSU Architecture students returned to the Pickathon music festival this summer, transforming 26 steam-bent composite timber arches into an evocative temporary performance venue known as the Cherry Hill stage, which hosted 17 musical acts, including Vieux Farka Touré, pictured here. The elegant structure will reappear this fall on the PSU campus, providing a new outdoor gathering space at the Oak Savanna, as part of the Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge project. Learn more about key topics in architecture at the ArchiLecture series on Fridays.

A traveling workshop: For over a decade, Nuria Montiel has expanded the artistic and political significance of printmaking in her home country of Mexico and abroad. An important part of this effort has been her innovative participatory project, the “Imprenta móvil” (“Mobile Press”). In the early 2010s, Montiel began pushing a makeshift printing cart throughout the streets of Mexico City, inviting passersby to create prints in this mobile workshop. Several of the prints reflected on the violence resulting from the ongoing war between the Mexican state and illicit drug cartels.
Curated by Alberto McKelligan Hernández, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history, School of Art + Design, “Mundos posibles / Possible Worlds” looks at past iterations of the Mobile Press, as well as prints created by Montiel in collaboration with students from Portland State University and other institutions. The resulting graphic works showcase the transformative potential of printmaking in disparate artistic and geographic contexts. See page 3.
