HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter has helped lead the Timbers to a positive result in 16 of the team’s first 17 matches of the 2013 MLS season, including a current club-record, 15-game unbeaten stretch. Porter has been named the MLSsoccer.com Coach of the Week twice this year (Week 6, Week 9) and set the MLS record for a first-year head coach with 15 straight undefeated games. Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a threetime All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

MONARCAS MORELIA AT PORTLAND TIMBERS WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2013 ABOUT MONARCAS MORELIA Known as “Monarcas,” Morelia was founded in 1924, and recently has been a consistent contender in Mexico’s first division, called Liga MX, earning a promotion following the 1981 season. Monarcas captured their first top-flight title in 2000, winning the Invierno tournament championship, and are a three-time league finalist, most recently during the 2011 Clausura tournament. The club has earned a top-five finish in four of the last seven tournaments dating back to the 2009-10 season. Monarcas have been one of the top clubs in the region, competing in the 2010 Copa Libertadores as one of the few representatives of Mexico in the prestigious South American club tournament. The club is a two-time runner-up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup (now called Champions League), reaching the finals of the 2002 and 2003 tournaments, and is a two-time participant of the SuperLiga – a competition contested between top clubs from MLS and Mexico from 2007-10 – winning the tournament in its final season in 2010. Monarcas finished the 2012 Apertura campaign in fifth place (6-2-9, 27pts) and reached the quarterfinals against Club América. Under new head coach Carlos Bustos, who took over in February, the club finished the 2013 Clausura tournament in fourth place in the Liga MX table with a record of 8-3-6 (30pts). Morelia lost a two-legged quarterfinal series to Cruz Azul in the playoffs. The club is led by veterans in forward Héctor Mancilla, who finished the season second in the league in goal-scoring with 12 goals and is a two-time Liga MX Golden Boot winner (Apertura 2008, Clausura 2009), and goalkeeper Frederico Vilar, the league’s goalkeeper of the year in 2007. Monarcas also features Ecuadorian international midfielder Jefferson Montero, who appeared in each of Ecuador’s last two 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

ABOUT COPA VERDE In “Copa Verde” (Green Cup), the Timbers have established a new friendly competition in which the club will face a first-division side from Mexico. Copa Verde signifies the sustainability of the Timbers’ local outreach programs and initiatives through “Somos Timbers,” an outreach platform focused on Hispanic youth development, education and health in the greater-Portland area. A portion of the proceeds from Copa Verde benefit the Mexican Consulate of Portland’s IME Becas program and scholarships. IME Becas focus its resources on education, health, and cultural and professional development in the local community.

MONARCAS MORELIA AT PORTLAND TIMBERS WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2013 SCOUTING MONARCAS MORELIA Head coach Carlos Bustos’ squad enters the Rose City on the heels of a 2-1 preseason loss against Brazilian club Cruzeiro on June 29 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. Forward Héctor Mancilla tallied the lone goal for Monarcas on a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Mancilla was the club’s leading goal scorer in the most recent 2013 Clausura tournament with 12 goals, good for second in Liga MX. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Cruzeiro scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take a 2-0 lead on Monarcas in the club’s first of four preseason friendly matches in the United States. In the 2013 Clausura, Monarcas finished in fourth place in the standings, qualifying for the Liguilla (playoffs) where the side matched up against Cruz Azul in a two-legged quarterfinals series. After falling 4-2 on the road in the first leg on May 9, Monarcas earned a 1-0 win in the second leg, but lost the aggregate series 4-3 as Cruz Azul eventually progressed to the championship.

TIMBERS IN INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES Tonight’s match against Monarcas Morelia marks the Timbers’ seventh international exhibition in the club’s two-plus year MLS history, not including preseason matches against Sweden’s AIK in 2012 and 2013. It is the team’s first international friendly of the 2013 season. Last year, the Timbers’ fell 1-0 against Spain’s Valencia CF on May 23, 2012, as Aritz Aduriz scored for the La Liga club before 19,564 fans at JELD-WEN Field. On July 24, 2012, Portland battled English Premier League side Aston Villa to a 2-2 draw in regulation before eventually losing 5-4 on penalty kicks. In 2011, the Timbers hosted four summer exhibitions: Dutch champions AFC Ajax (May 25, 2011), Mexico’s Club America (July 7), England’s West Bromwich Albion (July 20) and Argentina’s Independiente (July 26). The Timbers scored a shutout victory on July 26 against Independiente - a 2-0 triumph in which midfielder Sal Zizzo and forward Brian Umony scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart in the first half and goalkeepers Jake Gleeson and Adin Brown kept the Argentine club off the scoreboard.

TIMBERS ACQUIRE ALVAS POWELL

HOME SHUTOUT STREAK

On June 28, the Timbers acquired Jamaican international defender Alvas Powell on loan from Jamaican Premier League side Portmore United FC for the remainder of the 2013 season. Additionally, the club announced that is has waived midfielder Mobi Fehr.

The Timbers have recorded an MLS-club record streak of six straight shutouts at JELD-WEN Field. Portland has not conceded a goal on home turf since the 60th minute of a 2-1 loss (the team’s only loss of the season) against the Montreal Impact on March 9. The 570-minute streak has spanned back-to-back wins over Houston (April 6) and San Jose (April 14), a scoreless draw against New England (May 2), a 3-0 win over Chivas USA (May 12), a 1-0 win against FC Dallas (June 15) and a 3-0 win over Colorado on June 23. The Timbers have allowed five goals in eight home games.

Powell, 18, is a rising player for Jamaica and recently featured for the Reggae Boyz in their last three 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers June 4-11 against Mexico, United States and Honduras. He made his senior international debut Dec. 10, 2012, during the 2012 Caribbean Cup and has five caps. A native of Jamaica’s Portland Parish, Powell helped the Jamaica U-17 National Team qualify for the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup and played in two of the team’s three group matches in the tournament. He recently captained the Jamaica U-20 National Team to a quarterfinal finish in the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championships in February.

RECORD-SETTING PORTER Not including 1996 when everyone was a new coach, Timbers head coach Caleb Porter extended the MLS record for consecutive unbeaten games (15) for a firstyear head coach on June 23 with a 3-0 win over Colorado. Porter set the record on June 19 in a scoreless draw against the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Porter bested former D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn, who set the previous record in his first year as a head coach in 2007, compiling a stretch of 13 unbeaten games.

SECOND-HALF THREAT Portland has scored an MLS-high 20 goals in the second half of games this season, including a league-best nine goals during the first 15 minutes following the halftime break. On the defensive side, the Timbers have conceded seven goals in the final 45 minutes this season, which ranks third behind Seattle (5) and Sporting Kansas City (6) for the league’s best second-half defense.

LAST ONE STANDING Through 17 games, Portland claims the best winning percentage on the road (20-7, .611) and is the only remaining team yet to suffer a road loss. The Timbers have earned at least a point in each of their first nine road contests, including a scoreless draw at the LA Galaxy on June 19. This season, Portland has earned draws on the road at Seattle (March 16), Colorado (March 30), San Jose (April 21), FC Dallas (May 8), Vancouver (May 18), Chicago (June 8) and LA (June 19). On April 27, the Timbers overcame two, one-goal deficits in a 3-2 road win at Sporting Kansas City and also earned a 2-0 road win at D.C. United on May 25. Portland’s 14 goals on the road ranks first in the league. Portland is also the only remaining MLS team with just one loss this season.

TIMBERS ADVANCE IN U.S. OPEN CUP Forward Darlington Nagbe recorded one goal and one assist as the Timbers scored three goals in the second half to defeat FC Dallas 3-2 at FC Dallas Stadium in the quarterfinal of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 26. The Timbers advance to the U.S. Open Cup semifinal for the first time in club history and will travel to face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific). The Timbers overturned a 1-0 halftime deficit with three goals inside an 11-minute span in the second half. Nagbe scored in the 61st minute and then set up one by midfielder Diego Valeri two minutes later. Portland forward Frederic Piquionne then took advantage of a slow back pass to make the score 3-1 in the 72nd minute. FC Dallas pulled one back late on a header from forward Blas Perez in the 86th minute, but the Timbers were able to see out the 3-2 victory.

A RESILIENT GROUP Through 17 games, the Timbers are the only MLS team to earn a .500 or better record when conceding the first goal of a game. Portland has conceded the first goal in six of 17 matches, but the team has battled back to earn at least a point in five of those six games (1-1-4 record). Playing down a man, and trailing by one, forward Jose Valencia scored the equalizer in the 84th minute for a 2-2 draw against Vancouver on May 18. The Timbers trailed twice against Sporting KC on April 27 before earning a 3-2 win on the road. Portland has surmounted a pair of two-goal deficits in league play this season (3-1 on March 3 vs. New York; 2-0 on March 30 at Colorado) to earn draws.

REMARKABLE RICKETTS Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts had recorded four straight shutouts – a Timbers MLS record. He has an individual shutout streak of 396 minutes (May 18-25; June 15-current), which is the third-longest in MLS this season, beating out his 312-minute shutout streak from March 30-April 21. Ricketts missed the Timbers’ June 8 match at Chicago while on international duty. Ricketts’ 396-minute shutout streak is a new Timbers MLS record, surpassing the previous mark of 376 minutes set by Troy Perkins from April 21-May 20, 2012.
