HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

NOTES • • •
•
The Timbers advanced to the Western Conference Championship for the third time (2013, 2015, 2018) in the last six seasons. Portland has knocked Seattle out of the playoffs three times in the club’s history across all eras (1975, 2013, 2018). In 15 MLS playoff matches, the Timbers have posted a record of 7-4-4 with 25 goals scored. Their goals-per-game average of 1.67 is fourth-highest among all MLS teams. Since MLS returned to the two-conference playoff format, the 2018 Timbers are just the second Western Conference team to score two or more goals in each of their first three matches of a single postseason. The only other Western Conference team to accomplish this was the 2013 Timbers.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On how he is feeling after the match… “More than what I’m feeling is how exciting the game was for everybody that came to watch. I felt it didn’t disappoint. Seattle and Portland brought the rivalry to this match and it was incredible. There were moments when they scored that it looked like it was going to be difficult for us. It went back and forth, back and forth, all the way to PK’s. I think it delivered a very good match.” On the team’s ability to keep bouncing back… “We believed in ourselves. We believed we could achieve great things together. The guys fought the entire match against a very good team. A team that wanted to give us everything they had today and I am just very proud of the performance of our team.” On the character of the team during the shootout… “A lot of personality, character. What I told them is, ‘Just enjoy it. Go there and have fun. Take responsibility.’ And everybody wanted to take a PK, so that was fantastic.” Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara On the importance of a tough game like this one… “It was very important because the team did a very good job to win.” On how this game ranks in the Portland vs. Seattle rivalry… “We know playing against Seattle is very important for the fans and for us too. PORTLAND TIMBERS VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY SUNDAY, NOV. 25, 2018 SCOUTING SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City (18-8-8, 62pts) finished the 2018 regular season as the first seed in the Western Conference. Sporting Kansas City enters Sunday’s match following a 4-2 win over Real Salt Lake in the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals at Children’s Mercy Park on Nov. 11, to claim a 5-3 aggregate victory. In two postseason matches, forwards Diego Rubio and Daniel Salloi lead the team with two goals apiece, while goalkeeper Tim Melia has made nine saves and posted a 1.50 goals-against average.
TIMBERS IN THE MLS CUP PLAYOFFS The Timbers return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the fourth time in their MLS history, also marking the first time Portland has qualified for the postseason in consecutive seasons during its MLS era. Portland holds a 7-4-4 overall record in the playoffs. In the MLS era, Portland and Sporting Kansas City faced off against one another in the Knockout Round of the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, with the Timbers defeating Sporting KC in a dramatic, 7-6 win on penalty kicks to advance to the Western Conference Semifinals on Oct. 29, 2015.
REGULAR SEASON AT A GLANCE Portland concluded the regular season with 15 wins, which tied for the most wins in a single season (2017) in the club’s MLS era. With 15 wins, head coach Giovanni Savarese is tied for the third-most wins by a head coach in his first year as an MLS head coach. Additionally, the 54 goals scored during the regular season ranks as the third-highest total for the club dating back to the club’s inaugural MLS season in 2011.
HOME FORM IN MLS CUP PLAYOFFS Following their 2-1 win at Providence Park over Seattle Sounders FC in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals on Nov. 8, the Timbers improved to 3-2-2 in seven home playoff matches dating back to Portland’s first playoff appearance in 2013.
TIMBERS AT PROVIDENCE PARK Sunday’s Western Conference Championship first leg match will be the 21st and final home game of the 2018 season for Portland. The Timbers are 14-2-4 in all competitions at Providence Park this season, having scored 35 goals while conceding just 14.
PORTLAND IN CONFERENCE FINALS
FORM ENTERING PLAYOFFS Portland finished the regular season 5-3-2 in its final 10 games dating back to Aug. 29. Midfielder Sebastián Blanco registered four goals and six assists during that timespan, being named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 28 and 32 after performances in a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Sept. 8 and a 4-1 win away at Real Salt Lake on Oct. 6.
TWICE AS NICE Since MLS returned to the two-conference playoff format in 2003, the 2018 Timbers are just the second Western Conference team to score two or more goals in each of its first three matches of a single postseason. The only other time a Western Conference team accomplished the feat was when Portland also did it in 2013.
10 X 10 CLUB Sebastián Blanco recorded his 10th goal of the season in the 3-0 win over RSL on Oct. 21. With the goal, the Timbers became the fourth set of teammates since 2000 and the eighth set of teammates in MLS history to each have double-digit goals and assists in the same season. Blanco had 10 goals and 11 assists for Portland in 2018, while Diego Valeri recorded 10 goals and 12 assists.
CLOSING OUT GAMES Heading into Sunday’s match, the Portland Timbers have been effective at closing out games during the 2018 MLS campaign. Including the playoffs, the Timbers have held a lead at the 75th minute mark in 15 games this season, posting a solid 13-1-1 record in those matches.
BETWEEN THE PIPES In 22 regular-season starts this season, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella had only five losses, posting seven shutouts. His goals-against-average of 1.05 finished as the third-lowest during the 2018 regular season amongst goalkeepers with at least 10 starts. Additionally, Attinella’s 404-minute clean-sheet streak (April 14-May 19) is the longest by a Timbers goalkeeper in MLS play. As a team, the Timbers ranked sixth in the league in fewest-goals allowed (48) this season.
VALERI IN MLS CUP PLAYOFFS
This is the third time in the last six seasons that Portland has made it to the MLS Conference Championship round. In all eras of the Timbers as a pro team (since 1975), this is the seventh time the club is one of the final four teams remaining in its league’s playoffs.
Midfielder Diego Valeri scored his first career playoff brace in the 2-1 win over FC Dallas on Oct. 31, becoming the first Timbers player in the MLS era to record a brace in the postseason. In his MLS Cup Playoffs career, Diego Valeri has a combined 11 goals and assists (four goals, seven assists). That is tied for second-most combined goals and assists among active MLS players, just one behind Toronto FC’s Jozy Altidore.
POSTSEASON FIRSTS

Defender Bill Tuiloma made his first career postseason start in the win. With Blanco and Ebobisse’s goals, a total of 39 different players have scored a goal for the Timbers in the playoffs across all eras (since 1975).
Midfielder Dairon Asprilla made his 2018 postseason debut in the 4-2 penalty kick shootout win against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 8, recording a goal and an assist.
