PORTLAND TIMBERS vs PHILADELPHIA UNION PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore. March 8, 2014 (WEEK 1, MLS Game #7) 7:30 p.m. PT (ROOT-NW; CSN-Phi) It’s a fascinating interconference matchup ahead to kick off the new season when the Portland Timbers meet Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at Providence Park. The Timbers laid claim to the Western Conference regular season title a year ago, reaching the MLS Cup Playoffs in their third season, the first under head coach Caleb Porter. Union weren’t able to repeat their playoff performance of 2012 last year, but head coach John Hackworth has retooled their squad for the new campaign. REFEREE: Hilario Grajeda. SAR (bench): Ian Anderson; JAR (opposite): Baboucarr Jallow; 4th: Baldomero Toledo MLS Career: 99 games; FC/gm: 24.2; Y/gm: 3.4; R: 18; pens: 14 SUSPENDED: none DISABLED LIST: none INTERNATIONAL ABSENCES: none HEAD-TO-HEAD ALL-TIME (4 meetings): Timbers 2 wins, 4 goals … Union 0 wins, 1 goal … Ties 2 AT PORTLAND (2 meetings): Timbers 2 wins, 4 goals … Union 0 wins, 1 goal … Ties 0 LAST YEAR (MLS): 7/20: PHI 0, POR 0  This is the only league meeting between the teams this season.  The Timbers have never lost to Union in four meetings all-time. Portland has won both home matches in the series, including a 3-1 triumph March 12, 2012 in the last game in the Rose City.  The teams have played to two scoreless draws in two games at PPL Park.  Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. PHI: P1 W0 L0 T1 … John Hackworth vs. POR: P1 W0 L0 T1 PORTLAND TIMBERS Coming off a first-ever appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the Portland Timbers are looking to build on their success as they open their fourth season in MLS in 2014. Caleb Porter took over the club in 2013 and led the Timbers to their first postseason appearance, engineering a 23-point turnaround in the standings and leading the team to a first-place finish in the Western Conference regular season. TEAM NEWS  The Timbers concluded their preseason schedule with a 1-1 draw vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the finale of their own Rose City Invitational, ending with a 2-1-4 record.  Here’s the Timbers team: Donovan Ricketts, Jack Jewsbury, Norberto Paparatto, Pa Modou Kah, Michael Harrington, Diego Chara, Diego Valeri (Kalif Alhassan, 62), Will Johnson, Gastón Fernández, Maximiliano Urruti (Ben Zemanski, 77), Darlington Nagbe  “A lot of other teams have more pieces to manage, to figure out, they’re still tinkering with their systems, still trying to figure out the philosophy they’re going to play, all that stuff,” Porter said. “We’re clear on that, we’re set on that. So the nice thing is we can already start to dig into some concepts, some tactical things that we want to work on instead of trying to figure out our personnel, who’s going to start and all that stuff.”  The finale marked the first time Porter had his nominal first-choice strike force on the field together in the preseason, with Diego Valeri pulling the strings in behind the front three of newcomer Gastón Fernández, Maximiliano Urruti and Darlington Nagbe.  “There’s a lot of flexibility,” Porter said. “From game to game we can really change the pieces in those front four spots to give some different dimensions of the game. That’s exciting for me to tinker with that.” Said Nagbe:“It’s exciting, obviously you can see what those two guys can do, they’re real creative players. And the more they’re in the game I feel like it opens stuff for me.”  For Valeri, the Rose City Invitational was his first preseason action after undergoing offseason surgery for a sports hernia.  “The nice thing is he looks himself,” Porter said. “He’s still getting back in sync. ... Getting him back in a flow and a rhythm with our team is going to take a little bit of time.” Said Valeri: “It’s about the timing. It’s about getting more minutes to play [in] a real game because that’s an important thing. We work hard in training and it’s very similar to a real game, so I think I’m good.”

The Timbers made a couple of additions in the offseason of MLS veterans. Steve Zakuani is close to returning to action after being taken in the re-entry draft from Seattle, and Jorge Villafaña was picked up in a deal with Chivas USA. “[Michael Harrington is] ahead of Jorge at this point (at left back),” Porter said. “But the nice thing is, and the reason we added Jorge, is to have a good one and two guy and hopefully there’s a competition there, because that will make both of them better.” Timbers defender Alvas Powell was called in by Jamaica’s national team for its friendlies vs. Barbados and Saint Lucia.

OFFSEASON TRANSACTIONS IN: DF Jorge Villafaña (12/12/13 - trade from Chivas USA); MF Steve Zakuani (12/12/13 - Re-Entry Stage 1); GK Andrew Weber (1/10/14 - free); FW Gastón Fernández (1/15/14 - transfer from Estudiantes de La Plata); DF Norberto Paparatto (1/15/14 - transfer from Tigre); DF Bryan Gallego (1/15/14 - Homegrown); MF Schillo Tshuma (1/16/14 SuperDraft); DF Taylor Peay (2/11/14 - SuperDraft); MF George Fochive (2/25/14 - SuperDraft); MF Aaron Long (2/25/14 - SuperDraft) OUT: DF David Horst (12/9/13 - option declined); DF Ryan Miller (12/9/13 - option declined); DF Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (12/9/13 - waived); FW Brent Richards (12/9/13 - waived); FW Ryan Johnson (12/9/13 - out of contract); DF Brad Ring (12/9/13 - out of contract); DF Andrew Jean-Baptiste (12/12/13 - traded to Chivas USA); MF Sal Zizzo (12/13/13 traded to Sporting KC); DF David Horst (12/17/13 - traded to Houston); FW Sebastián Rincón (1/10/14 - loan expired); FW José Valencia (1/15/14 - loaned to Club Olimpo); GK Milos Kocic (1/25/14 - retired); DF Mikaël Silvestre (1/27/14 contract terminated) PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union are looking for a return to the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2014, after their bid for a second consecutive postseason trip ended on the season’s final day. John Hackworth returns for his second full season in charge of the club, having guided the club to the playoffs in 2013 after taking over the head coaching reins a third of the way through the season. TEAM NEWS  Union ended their preparations with a penalty kick shootout victory against the Montréal Impact following a 1-1 draw in the finale of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic.  Here’s the Union team: Zac MacMath; Fabinho, Austin Berry (Aaron Wheeler 80'), Amobi Okugo, Raymon Gaddis; Brian Carroll, Maurice Edu, Vincent Nogueira; Cristian Maidana (Zach Pfeffer 85'), Sébastien Le Toux (Leo Fernandes 72'), Jack McInerney (Danny Cruz 72')  Union face some real injury concerns entering the new campaign. Fullback Sheanon Williams suffered a quad strain during the Disney tournament and has not yet returned to full training. “Hopefully we’ll have Sheanon available for the weekend but we won’t know until [Wednesday] or even Thursday,” said Hackworth.  As well, Union are missing veteran striker Conor Casey, who did not play in the preseason with a calf strain.  “We clearly miss Conor right now,” Hackworth said. " ... If Conor can play at the same level he played at last year, I would think he’s going to have a similar impact. At the same time, he’s a year older. He’s already carrying an injury right now. He hasn’t played in these preseason games. And that’s a concern. But we still think there’s a lot left in his tank. And our job is to try to get him healthy and see how effective he can be for our team.”  Union made a key addition to their backline, acquiring 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry from the Chicago Fire.“He’s going to have to build some very quick relationships both with Fábinho [at left back] and [center back] Amobi [Okugo],” Hackworth said.  Out of preseason, Hackworth has settled on a first-choice midfield of Brian Carroll, Maurice Edu and Vincent Nogueira in his new-look 4-3-3 scheme. Cristian Maidana is also in the mix with Sébastien Le Toux trying to win down a wide role on the front line.  “There’s certainly a competition right now,” Hackworth said. “But they’re not the only two we’re looking at for that spot. That’s a spot we feel like we have real good depth at. And at the same time, no one has solidified that spot right now.”  There has been another intriguing development in the Union camp where 6-foot-4 Aaron Wheeler – who mostly played in the attack during his first season in Philly last year – has been deployed as a center back for much of the preseason. “He has really shown rapid growth right now as a central defender,” Hackworth said. OFFSEASON TRANSACTIONS IN: MF Corben Bone (12/12/13 - Re-Entry Stage 1); DF Ethan White (1/14/14 - trade from D.C. United); MF Cristian Maidana (1/15/14 - free transfer); GK Andre Blake (1/16/14 - SuperDraft); MF Maurice Edu (1/27/14 - loan from Stoke City); MF Vincent Nogueira (1/30/14 - transfer from Sochaux); GK Brian Holt (2/3/14 - free); DF Austin Berry (2/14/14 trade from Chicago)

RING OF HONOR INDUCTION As part of a special halftime ceremony during Saturday’s match, the Timbers will induct former NASL Timbers player Mick Hoban into the Ring of Honor. The first contracted player for the Timbers ahead of their inaugural 1975 season, Hoban made 65 appearances for the club from 1975-78, while also helping foster the early development of what has become a hugely popular soccer culture in Portland by serving as the club’s community relations manager. Always active in the local soccer community, Hoban has coached at the club level, as a member of the OYSA and has served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Portland. Hoban has been strongly involved in volunteerism, lending his efforts to Special Olympics Oregon, among other nonproits.

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular season home games in the team’s first three MLS seasons, even after raising the 86-year-old downtown venue’s capacity from 18,627 to 20,647. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regular-season home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS.

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turnaround season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33). Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm. Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Timbers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. PHILADELPHIA UNION AT PORTLAND TIMBERS SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2014 SCOUTING THE UNION An MLS expansion team in 2010, Philadelphia has qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs once in its first four seasons – reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2011. Head coach John Hackworth has been at the helm since midway through the 2012 season when he took on the head coaching duties for Peter Nowak. In an effort to bolster their roster following a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference last year, the Union signed U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Maurice Edu on loan from English Premier League side Stoke City, signed 27-year-old Argentine midfielder Cristian Maidana and 26-year-old French midfielder Vincent Nogueira from French first-division side Sochaux. The club also drafted athletic Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

PRESEASON RECAP The Timbers earned a 2-1-4 overall record during the club’s seven-game preseason schedule with wins over the Houston Dynamo and NASL side Indy Eleven. Portland earned three shutouts, including a scoreless draw against Cascadia side Seattle Sounders FC while in training camp in Tucson, Ariz. Working rookies and new acquisitions into the fray, the Timbers registered a streak of 355 minutes without conceding a goal from Feb. 1-23 and finished the preseason outscoring its opponents 6-4, as five different players logged goals for the club. Midfielder Will Johnson finished as the team’s preseason goal-scoring leader with two goals. Portland hosted its second consecutive Rose City Invitational preseason event - a round-robin formatted tournament that features the host Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Jamaica club Portmore United. Portland logged a loss and two draws during the tournament.

KEEPING THE CORE, ADDING NEW FACES A main offseason goal for head coach Caleb Porter and the Timbers was to keep the team’s core players together from last year’s successful season. Portland accomplished that task while also adding several new pieces to the roster. The Timbers added forward Gastón Fernández to a talented attacking corps. Coming from an experienced background with clubs in Argentina and Mexico, Fernández is expected to add another dimension of attacking creativity and quickness. On defense, the Timbers signed defender Norberto Paparatto while also acquiring defender/midfielder Jorge Villafaña to bolster the team’s depth. Building on the team’s depth, Portland selected midfielder Steve Zakuani with the No. 2 pick in Stage 1 of the MLS Re-Entry Process and drafted Generation adidas forward Schillo Tshuma with the 17th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

CREATOR/DISTRIBUTOR According to Opta, midfielder Diego Valeri ranked among the top 15 players in MLS in scoring chances created with 60 during the 2013 season. Valeri led the league with 13 assists while earning 2013 MLS Newcomer of the Year honors. The midfielder became the first Timbers player to record double digits in goals (10) and assists (13) in a single season during the team’s MLS era.

CANÕT TAKE THE BALL OFF HIM According to Opta, midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe completed 70 successful dribbles during the 2013 MLS season, which ranked first in the league. Notably, Nagbe was also the most fouled player in the league last year with 83 fouls suffered.

TIMBERS INJURY REPORT OUT: M Steven Evans (back surgery), M Rodney Wallace (L ACL surgery) QUESTIONABLE: M Steve Zakuani (sports hernia surgery) * - As of March 8, 2014

UPCOMING MILESTONES Midfielder Kalif Alhassan is one point shy of his 20th career MLS point. The midfielder has logged four goals and 11 assists in 78 career MLS games. Alhassan logged a goal and an assist against the Union on March 12, 2012, in the 2012 MLS season opener at Providence Park. Defender Jack Jewsbury’s next goal will be the 25th of his MLS career. Jewsbury has recorded 10 of his 24 career goals in a Timbers uniform. Additionally, Jewsbury is 125 minutes shy of tying Jeff Agoos (21,195 minutes) for 42nd place in all-time career minutes played in MLS. Midfielder Will Johnson is two matches shy of 150 career MLS appearances. Midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe is five matches short of 100 career MLS appearances (all for the Timbers), while midfielder Ben Zemanski is three appearances shy of 100 for his MLS career. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is four clean sheets away from reaching 50 shutouts in his MLS career. Ricketts, the 2013 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, registered an MLS career-best 14 shutouts last season. Ricketts is currently two clean sheets shy of tying Scott Garlick for ninth place on the list of all-time MLS leaders in shutouts.

THE IRONMAN Timbers midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe has started 48 straight league games for the club dating back to the 2012 MLS season. Entering his fourth year with the team, Nagbe has appeared in 67 of the team’s 68 regular-season games since the start of the 2012 MLS season. Nagbe is the club’s MLS career leader in goals (17) and appearances (95).

UNBEATEN STREAK AT HOME Portland is unbeaten in its last 15 regular-season home matches at Providence Park, putting together an 11-0-4 record since April 6, 2013. The Timbers last suffered a loss at home on March 9, 2013, in a 2-1 setback against the Montreal Impact in the second game of the 2013 regular season.

AGAINST THE EAST AT HOME The Timbers have only lost one match at home against an Eastern Conference club in the last two seasons. Since 2012, Portland has logged a 5-1-4 overall home record against Eastern Conference teams, outscoring teams 17-8 in the process. The Timbers are unbeaten in their last three home games against Eastern Conference teams.

DEFENSIVE ADDITION According to Opta, new Timbers centerback Norberto Paparatto led the Argentine Primera División with 19 blocks during the 2013 Inicial season. Paparatto finished the season ranked fifth among defenders with 133 clearances.

HOME WINNING PCT. Timbers head coach Caleb Porter currently possesses the highest home-winning percentage (.794) among active MLS head coaches with at least 17 home games on their record. Porter has earned an 11-1-5 overall record at Providence Park as head coach. New York’s Mike Petke (.765) ranks second, while LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena (.716), Houston’s Dominic Kinnear (.693) and new Montreal Impact head coach Frank Klopas (.685) round out the top five.
