COLORADO RAPIDS vs PORTLAND TIMBERS DICK’S SPORTING GOODS PARK, Commerce City, Colo. March 30, 2013 (WEEK 5, MLS Game #38) 4 p.m. MT (UDN; Altitude; ROOT-NW) A pair of teams looking for a first victory on the young season meet when the Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers face off Saturday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The injury-hit are winless in four games on the year, following their 1-0 loss at the LA Galaxy last weekend. The Timbers are also looking for a first win for new coach Caleb Porter, a round off last weekend after their thrilling 1-1 draw with arch-rival Seattle the Saturday before. REFEREE: Drew Fischer. The Rapids are in a tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with 1 point from 4 matches. LAST MATCH  The turning point came early in the second half, after Colorado defender Drew Moor was ejected for an off-theball backhand to Marcelo Sarvas' face inside the penalty area. Mike Magee converted from the spot in the 50th minute for the eventual match-winner.  Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin was credited with seven saves in his first professional start as the Galaxy held a 21-5 edge in attempts at goal. Galaxy 'keeper Carlo Cudicini made three saves.  Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja made two changes to the team that came away with a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Clint Irwin came in between the posts for the injured Matt Pickens, and Pablo Mastroeni returned to the side in place of Tony Cascio.  COLORADO RAPIDS (4-3-3): Clint Irwin - Marvell Wynne, Drew Moor (sent off 48), Diego Calderon (Christopher Klute 34), Brian Mullan - Pablo Mastroeni (Tony Cascio 27), Dillon Powers, Hendry Thomas Atiba Harris, Deshorn Brown, Kevin Harbottle (Shane O'Neill 52). TEAM NEWS  The Rapids have matched their worst start in club history after their first four matches with three losses and a draw, equaling the 2001 and 2003 seasons. In 2003, they started the season winless in six matches (0-5-1).  “Not many things went wrong today, obviously, but a lot of things went well,” said Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja. “That's all from our players, especially in the last 35 minutes after the red card. I thought it was a test to the young guys fighting and good on everything on the field.”  With Matt Pickens sidelined 4-6 weeks after suffering a broken arm in the Real Salt Lake match, goalkeeper Clint Irwin made his first MLS start against the Galaxy.  “I'm just trying to get better every game and just trying to learn on the fly and it’s a tough league,” said Irwin. “It’s physical and I'm just trying to pick up something new every time I step out there and being on the road you learn quickly, especially nights like tonight.”

For the second time in three matches, Pablo Mastroeni was forced to leave the game before the half-hour mark, after suffering a quadriceps strain in his left leg. Defender Diego Calderón was also forced to leave the game before halftime after he suffered a right thigh contusion. “It’s difficult when you have to move the team all over the place very early in the game,” Pareja said. “Losing Pablo again that early is a challenge, and with Diego as well. It is difficult. But no excuses, and that’s why we’re here and the players need to deal with adversity and the challenges the game gives and try to make things happen and find a way to resolve it. And I thought that for more than a third of the game the players adjusted.” When Calderón had to come off, right back Marvell Wynne had to shift to center back and substitute Chris Klute came in at left back. “We’ve got a deep squad and I think we showed that tonight,” said defender Drew Moor. “We had some guys step up, come onto the field, some guys were playing out of position but we showed that we got a deep squad and we shouldn't miss a beat next Saturday at home against Portland and look to get our first win of the year then.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers return to action following a weekend off, their last match a thrilling late 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders on March 16 at CenturyLink Field. The Timbers are in seventh place in the Western Conference with 2 points from 3 matches. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC took the lead after 13 minutes. Steve Zakuani picked up a stray pass in midfield and immediately streaked down the left side, cut in around the top of the penalty area and found Eddie Johnson at the far post with an inch-perfect cross for a first-time finish.  But the Timbers found a dramatic equalizer in second-half stoppage time. Andrew Jean-Baptiste looped a high cross into the heart of the area and substitute Rodney Wallace found himself completely unmarked before sailing a header over Sounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.  Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made two changes to the team that dropped a 2-1 decision to the Montréal Impact at Jeld-Wen Field. Ben Zemanski came in at right back for Ryan Miller, and Jack Jewsbury started in the midfield in place of Kalif Alhassan.  PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-1-2-3): Donovan Ricketts - Ben Zemanski, Mikael Silvestre, Andrew Jean-Baptiste, Michael Harrington - Jack Jewsbury (Frederic Piquionne 70) - Will Johnson, Diego Chara - Diego Valeri, Ryan Johnson (Jose Adolfo Valencia 90), Darlington Nagbe (Rodney Wallace 80). TEAM NEWS  While the Timbers are still looking for a first victory on the season, they did come back to secure a second draw in three games. They have allowed the opening goal in all three games this season.  “Not only did we get a point, but they lost two points. It gives us a lot of belief moving forward. This team has a lot of mettle,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “I'm most proud of our effort defensively. We dug deep. We gave up a goal and obviously it was a counter again and we got punished for it. But overall, for 90 minutes, we defended very well against that team.”  Rodney Wallace has scored a goal in each one of his three seasons with the Timbers. Three of Portland’s five goals this season have come after the 80th minute.  “We've been down in games and we have a lot of belief. We've come back in games. Even in the Montreal match, we were pushing the game and had chances to tie the game,” said Porter. “This team, they have that ability to come back so I think we were all very composed. We knew we had at least 45 minutes to score a goal and at least get a point out of it.”  Jack Jewsbury was inserted into the Timbers lineup into the holding role in central midfield, behind Will Johnson and Diego Chara in more driving positions.  “I honestly think it’s the ideal role for him at this point in his career where he can kind of act as a pivot where he can sit in front of the center backs,” Porter said. “ … More than anything our players know how we’re attacking and how we’re defending. I think that tweak with Jack in there allowed us to play through Jack more, it allowed us to protect our center backs.”  Ben Zemanski, who played for Porter at the University of Akron, made his first start of the season, at right back. Zemanski was primarily a midfielder in his first three professional seasons with Chivas USA.  “We wanted a couple more guys on the field that bring a little bit of fight and bite and grit. Those two guys certainly bring that. I thought they both had good games,” said Porter.  The addition of Jewsbury also Diego Valeri into a more forward attacking position just off central striker Ryan Johnson. “The thing I’m most encouraged by was the balance,” Porter said. “I thought the tweaks we made, especially for that game, gave us better balance defensively. And that’s going to be important to winning games.”

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-toback NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a threetime All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

MATCH DAY PREVIEW Coming off a bye week, the Timbers have had nearly two weeks to prepare for a Colorado side that has been struck hard by injuries during the preseason and the first few weeks of the regular season. Midfielders Martin Rivero and Jaime Castrillon are still recovering from injuries suffered in the preaseason, while No. 1 goalkeeper Matt Pickens (who has registered three clean sheets against the Timbers) sustained a broken arm early in a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake on March 16. Rookie Clint Irwin made seven saves in a 1-0 loss against the LA Galaxy on March 23. Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni (quadriceps stain) and defender Diego Calderon (thigh contusion) are also nursing injuries as the Rapids search for their first win of the season. The Timbers struck for a second-half, stoppage-time equalizer against Cascadia-rival Seattle on March 16 at CenturyLink Field. Defender/midfielder Rodney Wallace connected on an open header in the box off an Andrew Jean-Baptiste cross to give Portland a share of the points against its Pacific Northwest neighbor.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT COLORADO RAPIDS SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2013 ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES Colorado has held the advantage against the Timbers since 2011, with Portland claiming a 1-4-0 overall record against the Rapids. The two sides squared off in Portland’s first-ever Major League Soccer match on March 19, 2011, as Colorado scored three times in the opening 30 minutes en route to a 3-1 season-opening win. The two Western Conference clubs have matched up five times since the start of the 2011 season with the Timbers coming away victorious in one match, a 1-0 shutout on Aug. 31, 2012, at JELD-WEN Field. In matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., the Timbers have an 0-3-0 record. Saturday’s match is the first of three meetings between the sides during the 2013 season and the only matchup to take place in Colorado. The Rapids travel to Portland for games on June 23 and Sept. 20. *NOTE: The start time of the MLS Reserve League game between the Timbers Reserves and Rapids Reserves on Sunday, March 31, has been moved to 1 p.m. (Pacific).

LAST TIME VS. COLORADO The Timbers traveled to Colorado for the second of back-to-back matches against the Rapids during the second half of the 2012 season. Coming off a 1-0 shutout over Colorado on Aug. 31 at JELD-WEN Field, Portland couldn’t sustain the momentum as the Rapids struck early and went on to a 3-0 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The win helped Colorado leapfrog the Timbers in the standings and put an end the to club’s modest, two-game winning streak. Tyrone Marshall’s first-minute long ball found Tony Cascio, who hit the post just 50 seconds after the opening whistle, and less than five minutes later, the Rapids got on the scoreboard as Andre Akpan tallied for the home side. Cascio doubled the lead in the 27th minute and Colorado held the Timbers to just one shot on goal. GOOD COMPANY The Timbers are in good company in a couple of statistical categories early in the 2013 season. Portland ranks second in the league in fewest shots allowed and in shot differential through three games. The Timbers have allowed 26 shots in 270 minutes of action, second only to the 2012 MLS Cup-champion LA Galaxy who have allowed 14 shots in three games. The Timbers shot differential of plus-27 (53 shots for; 26 shots against) also ranks second in the league behind the Galaxy. Through three games, LA has a massive plus-40 shot differential, attempting 54 shots and allowing just 14.

AN UPWARD TREND Through 34 games during the 2012 MLS season, the Timbers registered more than 500 pass attempts twice - an accomplishment that this year’s squad has already surpassed through the first three matches of this season. The 2012 Timbers recorded 512 pass attempts in a 2-1 home loss against Chivas USA on April 7, 2012, and 572 pass attempts in a 5-3 home loss against the LA Galaxy on July 14, 2012. The Timbers possessed the ball for 60.8 percent of the match against the Galaxy, the only time in 2012 when the club maintained more than 60 percent of possession. Portland attempted 553 and 569 in its first two matches of 2013, respectively. The Timbers, who attempted 496 passes on March 16, also maintained 62.9, 62.8 and 55 percent of possession in their first three games.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT COLORADO RAPIDS SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2013 CHARTING THE SHOTS The Timbers have conceded 10 or fewer total shots in all three matches during the 2013 season. The only other time Portland has recorded a stretch of three games in an MLS single season without giving up more than 10 shots was from March 12-24, 2012, in the first three matches of the 2012 season where the club conceded five (Philadelphia), six (FC Dallas) and nine (New England) shots, respectively. According to Opta, Colorado is one of two teams to concede 19 or more shots (including blocked shots) more than once during the 2013 season. The Rapids surrendered 19 shots against Real Salt Lake on March 16 and 21 shots against the LA Galaxy on March 23.

SCOUTING THE RAPIDS The Rapids, 2010 MLS Cup champions, finished three points ahead of the Timbers in the 2012 standings with an 11-19-4 (37pts) overall record, and the start of the 2013 season hasn’t been easy for the Colorado club. Still searching for their first win of the season through four contests, the Rapids have been beset by injuries to several key players including starting goalkeeper Matt Pickens (broken arm on March 16). Captain Pablo Mastroeni has been slowed with multiple knocks through the early stages of the season and midfielders Martin Rivero and Jaime Castrillon are continuing to recover from long-term injuries sustain in preseason. Head coach Oscar Pareja called on rookie goalkeeper Clint Irwin to man the net against the LA Galaxy last week and the 23-year-old did well, stopping seven shots in a 1-0 loss. Irwin has nine saves in 173 minutes since replacing the injured Pickens. Rookie forward Deshorn Brown leads the club with three points (1 goal, 1 assist) through four matches.

WAITING ON THE CALL The Timbers have gone a club-record stretch of 37 matches without receiving a penalty kick (3,364 minutes since the team’s last penalty kick attempt). Portland was last awarded a shot from the penalty spot during the 2011 season finale against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 22, 2011, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Jack Jewsbury’s 56th-minute attempt went over the crossbar, but the Timbers were able to steal a point at the end with a stoppage-time equalized from defender Futty Danso. Since the Timbers last penalty attempt, 78 penalty kicks have been awarded in league play. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the team’s 37-game stretch without a penalty kick ranks fifth all-time in MLS history. Chivas USA leads the record books with a 54-game streak between August 2010 and April 2012.

ON THE ROAD With a positive result (win or draw) on Saturday against Colorado, the Timbers will come within one match of tying the club’s longest road unbeaten streak of four games. The current streak began with a 1-0 win against Vancouver on Oct. 21, 2012, at BC Place Stadium and continued with a 1-1 draw against Cascadiarival Seattle on March 16. The record, four-game road unbeaten streak for Portland spanned the 2011 and 2012 seasons, starting with a 1-0 win at Vancouver (Oct. 2, 2011), two 1-1 draws at D.C. United (Oct. 14) and Real Salt Lake (Oct. 22) and a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas (March 17, 2012) in the first away game of 2012.

ERASING THE DEFICIT Since the start of the 2011 season, the Timbers have come back to gain at least a point when conceding the game’s first goal 12 times. Portland has accomplished this already twice this season. Additionally, the Timbers have come back to gain a point seven times when trailing after 75 minutes, two of those instances happening this season (March 3 vs. New York; March 16 at Seattle).

UPCOMING MILESTONES Third-year midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe’s next goal will be the 10th of his MLS career. It would also put Nagbe into a tie with Jack Jewsbury as the club’s all-time career goal-scoring leader. Nagbe scored his ninth career goal with a rebound in the 56th minute against New York on March 3. Nagbe also has the chance during Saturday’s game to claim the club’s all-time MLS career lead in shots on goal. Currently, Nagbe has 29 career shots on goal, one shy of the club record on 30 held by both Jack Jewsbury and Kenny Cooper. Team captain Will Johnson’s next assist will be the 10th of his career. Johnson earned the second assist on midfielder Diego Valeri’s first career goal in a 3-3 draw with New York on March 3. The seven-year MLS veteran has registered an assist in each of his last five seasons. Midfielder Diego Chara’s next appearance will be his 60th all-time match with the Timbers. Since signing as the club’s first-ever Designated Player on April 13, 2011, the speedy Colombian has played in 59 of 66 games for the team. If midfielder Jack Jewsbury makes an appearance on Saturday against the Rapids, it will be his 20th career match against the Colorado club. The 11-year veteran has logged 1,502 minutes against the Rapids since 2003, scoring one goal and adding one assist in 19 games (17 starts). Midfielder Ben Zemanski’s next match will be his 75th career MLS appearance. Seventy two of those appearances came with Chivas USA from 2010-12.

CALL IT A COMEBACK The Timbers managed a point just four times in 23 occurrences when trailing at the half in their first two MLS seasons. Portland has accomplished this twice already in 2013, coming back to gain a draw against New York on March 3 when trailing 3-1 at halftime and, most recently, earning a draw at Seattle on March 16 after going down 1-0 in the first half. The draw against New York in the season opener marked the first time the club has erased a two-goal deficit for a point in its three MLS seasons.

TIMBERS EARN STOPPAGE-TIME DRAW Against Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC, defender/midfielder Rodney Wallace struck for a second-career, game-tying goal against Portland’s Pacific Northwest neighbors for a 1-1 draw on March 16 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Wallace, a second-half substitute, connected on a cross from defender Andrew JeanBaptiste in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, giving the Timbers a late equalizer and a share of the points. The match marked just the sixth time in three MLS seasons the Timbers have come from behind to earn a point on the road. The seven shots allowed at Seattle was one shy of the team’s record for fewest shots allowed in a road match. Twice the Timbers allowed six shots in a game on the road in 2012 (March 17 at FC Dallas, Oct. 21 at Vancouver).

AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS Timbers midfielder and Designated Player Diego Valeri ranks second in the league in shots (17). Valeri scored his first career goal for the Timbers, a strike that was voted the MLSsoccer.com Goal of the Week for Week 1, on March 3 in a 3-3 draw against the New York Red Bulls. Timbers defender/midfielder Rodney Wallace, who has played 22 minutes this season and scored one goal, leads the league in goals per 90 minutes with an average of 4.09. Colorado midfielder Jamie Smith, who has one goal in 55 minutes of action, is second with a 1.64 goals per 90 minutes mark. LA’s Mike Magee (4 goals in 262 minutes) is third.
