PORTLAND TIMBERS vs HOUSTON DYNAMO JELD-WEN FIELD, Portland, Ore. April 6, 2013 (WEEK 6, MLS Game #49) 7:30 p.m. PT (ROOT-NW; CSN-Hou2) The Portland Timbers will be looking to make Caleb Porter a winner for the first time in Major League Soccer when they entertain the MLS Cup finalist Houston Dynamo on Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. The Timbers came roaring back for their third draw in four starts last weekend, snatching a 2-2 draw at Colorado. The Dynamo made it three wins from four starts and extended their home undefeated streak last weekend with a 2-0 victory against San Jose. REFEREE: Ricardo Salazar. The Timbers have yet to defeat the Dynamo since coming into MLS. A year ago, the teams played to a scoreless draw at BBVA Compass Stadium; Houston won both meeting in Portland’s inaugural MLS season of 2011. Coaches record: Dominic Kinnear vs. POR: P3 W2 L0 D1… Caleb Porter vs. HOU: first game PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers made a roaring comeback but still saw their season-opening winless streak extended to four games, playing to a 2-2 result with the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday. The Timbers are in seventh place in the Western Conference with 3 points from 4 matches. LAST MATCH The hosts broke through after a quarter-hour in stunning fashion. Cutting inside after a pass from defender Chris Klute, Dillon Powers unleashed a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out and found the far side of the goal past a helpless Donovan Ricketts. The Rapids then doubled their lead three minutes after the second-half restart. Striker Tony Cascio drew a penalty as he faked a shot and drew a trip from Diego Chará, and Hendry Thomas finished cleanly from the spot. But the Timbers pulled a goal back in the 55th minute. After a corner kick was cleared, Ryan Johnson’s cross back into the box found an unmarked Will Johnson, and the Timbers captain easily headed home from short distance. Portland completed the comeback in the 71st minute through an unlikely source. Colorado's Atiba Harris tried to clear a ball out of his own penalty area, but he clipped Portland’s David Horst in the chest in the process, and referee Drew Fischer pointed to the spot. Will Johnson finished from the mark, the Timbers' first penalty kick in more than a year, to leave the teams tied. Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made one change to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders. David Horst came into the back four in place of Mikael Silvestre. PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-1-2-3): Donovan Ricketts - Ben Zemanski, Andrew Jean-Baptiste, David Horst, Michael Harrington - Jack Jewsbury (Rodney Wallace 64) – Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Diego Valeri, Ryan Johnson (Kalif Alhassan 88), Darlington Nagbe (Frederic Piquionne 46). TEAM NEWS The Timbers saw their winless run extended to four matches to open the season, head coach Caleb Porter still looking for a first MLS victory. Since the start of last August, the Timbers have won just once in their last 12 MLS matches. “I think we need a breakthrough, in all honesty. I’m new, these guys are new and we’re all competitors and we all want to win and we haven’t won and so it creates a bit of frustration,” said Porter. “... I think it’s just getting that first goal, which we haven’t gotten, and getting that first win and I think this whole thing will start to
MLS GAME INFORMATION
snowball. These guys know we're on the cusp of a breakthrough. They’re not happy, but they a very upbeat and encouraged. It will come.” For the fourth time in as many matches this season, the Timbers conceded the opening goal. “We’ve kind of been the comeback kids. We don’t want to be coming back as much as we have been,” said Porter. “People will focus on the negatives, and obviously there are some negatives: we haven’t won a game in four and we’ve given up the first goal in four games. I’m focused on the positives. We’ve only lost one game.” Will Johnson scored two goals in a game for the first time in his MLS career, in 124 career league appearances. “You just have to focus one goal at a time. 2-0 is I think the most dangerous lead in soccer because as soon as you get one, you’re flying, and you’re coming right down their throat, and the other team usually can’t handle it,” said Johnson. “We knew if we were able to get the first one, that that was the hardest one, and that we’d be able to get a second.” Will Johnson’s second goal came from the penalty spot, Portland’s first penalty kick since Oct. 22, 2011 – a span of 37 league matches. The streak between penalty attempts is the fifth-longest in MLS history. The last penalty converted by the Timbers was in a 2-2 home draw against Toronto FC on July 30, 2011. Center back David Horst made his first appearance of the season after missing the first three matches of the season due to an injury sustained early in preseason. Horst started in place of Mikael Silvestre, who did not dress due to a strained adductor. “I’ve pretty much been away for two months, not playing at all. I’ve only been back playing 8-10 days or so,” said Horst. “To get thrown back in like that, I was a little nervous at first, but the back four got me settled down, and I got into a little groove again.” Now unbeaten in their last three road matches, dating back to a 1-0 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Oct. 21, 2012, the Timbers are one road result away from matching their MLS club mark for longest road unbeaten streak – four games from Oct. 2, 2011, to March 17, 2012.
HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo tied the MLS record for the longest home undefeated streak, getting two first-half goals for a 2-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 9 points from 4 matches. LAST MATCH The Dynamo controlled the match from the outset and took the lead in the 21st minute. Boniek García nutmegged a defender on the right and sent in a low pass, where Will Bruin took no time in slotting home a professional finish. The home side doubled the lead just before the first half ended. Freed on the left flank, Brad Davis lifted a teasing cross that drew San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch off his line, only to be beaten by a streaking Giles Barnes, who thumped home a header from the heart of the area. Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made three changes to the team that recorded a 2-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Jermaine Taylor, Boniek Garcia and Brad Davis all returned from international duty, in place of Eric Brunner, Warren Creavalle and Andrew Driver. HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-3-2): Tally Hall - Kofi Sarkodie, Jermaine Taylor, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe Adam Moffat - Boniek Garcia, Ricardo Clark, Brad Davis (Andrew Driver 77) - Giles Barnes (Brian Ching 70), Will Bruin (Cam Weaver 83). TEAM NEWS With the victory, the Dynamo extended their home undefeated streak to 34 games over all competitions, matching the MLS record set by Real Salt Lake. “You don’t get anything for it,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “You don’t get a T-shirt or a hat or a ring for it. You get a lot of points and get asked a lot of questions and a lot of satisfaction on a week-to-week basis, but in the end it goes down in a statistical record book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful accomplishment and I’m glad I’m part of the group that’s done it, but there is still a lot of stuff to be thought about as well.” According to the Elias Sports Bureau, in North American professional sports, the 1995-96 NBA Chicago Bulls hold the record with 44 undefeated games at home between March 30, 1995 and April 4, 1996. The Dynamo also have the third-longest unbeaten run in league games to open a new facility at 20 games, behind the NBA’s Washington Capitols (27, at Uline Arena) and the WNBA’s LA Sparks (22, Staples Center). Said goalkeeper Tally Hall: “We’re obviously aware of it, but the streak is not something we’re trying to add to. It’s always, ‘Let’s just get to No. 1.’ It’s always about the game we’re playing that day. When we started the streak we took the same attitude that day that we did today when we came in.” For the first time this season, the Dynamo scored a goal in the first half – both vs. San Jose coming in the opening 45 minutes. Each of the Dynamo’s seven goals in their first five games in all competitions came after the interval, with five coming in the 79th minute or later.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“I think it puts [the opponents] under pressure and it rewards the guys for their hard work,” Kinnear said. “I think every game we step on the field, home or away, I’d like to see the guys impose their will on the other team. It gives you confidence, a boost of energy, when you get the first goal. Then the second goal right before half time was a really good one for us.” Brad Davis, who was tied for fifth in assists in MLS in 2012 with 12, recorded his first league assist of the new season, setting up the Dynamo’s second goal. “Everyone knows what an ability Brad has in his left foot,” Barnes said. “We just locked eyes and looked at each other. He knew where I wanted it and I just tried to get on the end of it. Giles Barnes took over the club’s goals lead with his second of the season and his second in as many matches, while strike partner Will Bruin netted his first goal of the season to send the Dynamo on their way in the first half. “I think it looks pretty good,” Kinnear said of the pairing. “I think there were a couple times in the [San Jose] game where they seemed to be looking for each other, and that comes from playing together more than just throwing them out there for just a game or two.”

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-toback NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a threetime All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.
MATCH DAY PREVIEW The Timbers return to JELD-WEN Field Saturday for the first of back-to-back home matches against Houston and Western Conference-rival San Jose. On a two-game road swing, the Timbers managed to come from behind to earn a point in both games - 1-1 against Seattle Sounders FC on March 16 and 2-2 against the Colorado Rapids on March 30. Team captain Will Johnson recorded a brace against Colorado, helping the Timbers overcome a two-goal deficit for a share of the points for the second time this season. Houston returns to Portland for the first time since Oct. 14, 2011. Last season, the Timbers faced the Dynamo just once, battling to a scoreless draw on May 15, 2012, at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Dynamo, who are led by English midfielder Giles Barnes’ two goals this year, have won backto-back home matches, registering a 2-1 win against Vancouver on March 23 and a 2-0 victory against San Jose on March 30 at BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston currently claims a 34-match home unbeaten streak in all competitions, which is tied for the MLS record.
HOUSTON DYNAMO AT PORTLAND TIMBERS SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2013 ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES Saturday’s match marks the fourth all-time meeting between the Timbers and Dynamo and the first time the teams have played in the Rose City since Oct. 14, 2011. The Timbers have earned a 0-2-1 all-time record against the back-to-back MLS Cup runner-up Dynamo with the lone draw coming on May 15, 2012, at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston three days after the venue’s inaugural game. Timbers midfielders Diego Chara, Jack Jewsbury and Sal Zizzo and midfielder/ forward Darlington Nagbe are the only current Timbers players who have appeared in all three previous matchups against the Dynamo. Jewsbury scored Portland’s lone goal against Houston in the first match - a 2-1 loss on Aug. 14, 2011, at Robertson Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. Saturday’s game is Portland’s third match against an Eastern Conference opponent in 2013, all of which have come at JELD-WEN Field (New York and Montreal are the other two teams). The game also marks Houston’s second road game of the season. The Dynamo played their only other road game at in-state rival FC Dallas (a 3-2 Houston loss) on March 17.
LAST TIME VS. HOUSTON In just the second match ever played at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Timbers and Houston Dynamo battled to a scoreless draw in front of a sellout crowd of 22,039 in Houston. The Timbers notched a club single-game high seven saves to help keep the clean sheet as Portland extended its unbeaten streak to two games. The unbeaten stretch would eventually reach four matches (1-0-3 overall) before being snapped on June 17, 2012, against the LA Galaxy. The scoreless draw against Houston was the second straight shutout for the Timbers as Portland and Columbus also played to a scoreless draw on May 5, 2012.

SCORING LATE EARLY SEASON OFFENSE The Timbers have scored seven goals through their first four games of the 2013 season, the most scored by a Timbers MLS side through the opening four games of a campaign. Portland scored six goals through the first four games of both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Midfielder and team captain Will Johnson leads the team with two goals, one shy of tying a career-high mark of three goals set in the 2012 season with Real Salt Lake.
Six of the seven goals scored by the Timbers through their first four matches have been scored in the second half of games. Portland is tied for second in MLS in second-half goal-scoring. The club’s three goals scored during the final 15 minutes of matches is tied for second-best in MLS during that time interval. Last week against Colorado, Portland scored twice in the second half to overcome a two-goal deficit in earning a draw on the road. The Timbers also erased a two-goal deficit in the second half against New York on March 3.

MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Timbers midfielder and team captain Will Johnson was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 5 of the 2013 MLS season. Johnson scored a brace to help the Timbers overcome a two-goal deficit on Saturday in a 2-2 draw against Colorado at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. In the 55th minute, Johnson made a well-timed run into the middle of the area and connected on a cross from forward Ryan Johnson. The midfielder directed a header inside the left post to trim Colorado’s lead to a goal. Will Johnson helped the Timbers complete the comeback in the 71st minute when defender David Horst earned a penalty kick after suffering a foul in the box. The Canadian international successfully placed the penalty kick into the top left corner, tying the match and becoming the fifth Timbers player since 2011 to record two goals in a game.

SECOND-HALF DEFENSE In addition to a scoring push in the second-half of its first four games, Portland has buckled down on defense, too. The Timbers are third in MLS in shots allowed in the second half of games with 19, trailing only the LA Galaxy (15) and Sporting Kansas City (17). The Timbers have allowed just two second-half goals (both conceded in the opening 15 minutes of the second half), tied for third-fewest goals allowed in the second half this season – SKC has not allowed a second-half goal and two other clubs (Seattle and Houston) have only allowed one second-half goal.
HOUSTON DYNAMO AT PORTLAND TIMBERS SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2013 COMEBACK KIDS The Timbers managed a point just four times in 23 occurrences when trailing at the half in their first two MLS seasons. Portland has accomplished this three times already in 2013, coming back to gain a draw against New York on March 3 when trailing 3-1 at halftime, earning a draw at Seattle on March 16 after going down 1-0 in the first half and, most recently, coming back from a 1-0 halftime deficit on March 30 against Colorado on the road. Against the Rapids, Portland faced a two-goal deficit after the Rapids scored in the 48th minute.
BREAKING THE STREAK The Timbers saw their club-record stretch of 37 matches without receiving a penalty kick end in the 71st minute against the Colorado Rapids last Saturday. The streak reached 3,435 minutes before defender David Horst was fouled in the box at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Midfielder Will Johnson, the team’s captain, stepped up and converted the penalty kick. Prior to Saturday’s match, Portland was last awarded a shot from the penalty spot during the 2011 season finale against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 22, 2011, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Jack Jewsbury’s 56th-minute attempt went over the crossbar, but the Timbers were able to steal a point at the end with a stoppage-time equalized from defender Futty Danso. Portland’s stretch ranked fifth all-time in the MLS record books.
SCOUTING THE DYNAMO One of the hottest teams in the league through the first five weeks of the season, the Dynamo are currently in second place in the Eastern Conference (3-1-0, 9pts) and come into Portland riding a two-game winning streak against Western Conference opponents. The Dynamo, who have not scored a goal in the first half this season, feature a talented duo of Giles Barnes (2 goals) and Will Bruin (1 goal, 1 assist), complemented by Honduran international midfielder Boniek Garcia and United States international midfielder Brad Davis. Head coach Dominic Kinnear’s side features stalwart goalkeeper Tally Hall, a five-year MLS veteran, and Houston’s No. 1 goalkeeper for the last three seasons. A Pacific Northwest native, Hall ranks as one of the league’s most reliable goalkeepers, missing just one match since 2011.
GAINING A POINT Since the start of the 2011 season, the Timbers have come back to gain at least a point when conceding the game’s first goal 13 times. Portland has accomplished this already three times this season. Additionally, the Timbers have come back to gain a point seven times when trailing after 75 minutes, two of those instances happening this season (March 3 vs. New York; March 16 at Seattle).
SOCCER CITY, USA The consecutive sellout streak at JELD-WEN Field is one thing, but the Timbers run of a 97-percent season-ticket renewal rate in back-to-back years is equally as notable. The club currently has a Season Ticket Waiting List of more than 6,500 fans and even increased the season-ticket allotment by 500 during the offseason, raising the total number of season tickets to 15,250.
AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS Through the first five weeks of the season, Portland ranks among the league’s top-10 teams in several offensive stat categories. The Timbers rank fifth in goals scored (7), sixth in shots (62) and seventh in corner kicks (24). Individually, midfielder Will Johnson is tied for fifth in the league with two goals, midfielder Diego Valeri ranks fifth with 18 shots and defender/midfielder Rodney Wallace comes in third with 1.88 goals per 90 minutes.
UPCOMING MILESTONES Third-year midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe’s next goal will be the 10th of his MLS career. It would also put Nagbe into a tie with Jack Jewsbury as the club’s all-time career goal-scoring leader. Nagbe scored his ninth career goal with a rebound in the 56th minute against New York on March 3. Nagbe also has the chance during Saturday’s game to claim the club’s all-time MLS career lead in shots on goal. Currently, Nagbe has 29 career shots on goal, one shy of the club record on 30 held by both Jack Jewsbury and Kenny Cooper. Team captain Will Johnson’s next assist will be the 10th of his career. Johnson earned the second assist on midfielder Diego Valeri’s first career goal in a 3-3 draw with New York on March 3. The seven-year MLS veteran has registered an assist in each of his last five seasons.
TIMBERS ERASE TWO-GOAL DEFICIT IN DRAW Facing a two-goal deficit for the second time in four games this season, the Timbers battled back to record a 2-2 draw on the road against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on March 30. Midfielder and team captain Will Johnson scored twice for the Timbers in the 55th and 71st minute. Trailing 2-0 just three minutes into the second half, forward Ryan Johnson sent a cross into the box and found the head of Will Johnson, who directed the ball inside the left post to cut the Rapids lead to a goal. Timbers defender David Horst was cut down in the penalty box by Atiba Harris and Portland was awarded its first penalty kick in 37 games. Will Johnson stepped up and struck a right-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal, tying the match at 2-2.
SCORING QUICKLY Midfielder Will Johnson scored twice in the second half on March 30 against Colorado, recording the first two-goal performance of his MLS career (124 matches). He is the fifth Timbers MLS player to score multiple goals in a single match. Johnson scored his two goals just 16 minutes apart (55th and 71st minutes), marking the shortest amount of time between two goals scored by a Timbers MLS player in a single match. The record was held by both Darlington Nagbe (March 30, 2012 – 48th and 65th minutes) and Danny Mwanga (Sept. 19, 2012 – 45th and 62nd minutes) at 17 minutes between goals in their respective two-goal performances. Kris Boyd and Jorge Perlaza also scored braces for the Timbers.
DYNAMIC CONNECTIONS The Timbers and Dynamo feature several player crossovers. One-time Timbers midfielder Adam Moffat and defenders Eric Brunner and Mike Chabala are now with Houston. Moffat has earned a starting role with the Dynamo, appearing in each of the team’s first four matches this season and recording an assist on March 23 against Vancouver. Houston defender Kofi Sarkodie attended Akron from 2008-10 where he was coached by Timbers head coach Caleb Porter and was a teammate of Timbers midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe.
RICKETTS UP FOR SAVE OF THE WEEK Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is up for MLSsoccer.com’s Save of the Week for Week 5 of the MLS season. Down 2-1 against Colorado, Ricketts was called upon to make a diving stop to help keep the match close. His hard work paid off as later, Will Johnson converted a penalty to pull the Timbers even for a draw. Ricketts, a Jamaican international, won MLSsoccer.com Save of the Week in Week 2 when he was nominated twice for the honor.

DYNAMO VISIT PORTLAND SEEKING FIRST ROAD WIN OF 2013, SHARE OF FIRST PLACE The Houston Dynamo (3‐1‐0; 9 points) travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Portland Timbers (0‐1‐3; 3 points) at JELD‐ WEN Field on Saturday night. Houston earned a 2‐0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday through goals from Will Bruin and Giles Barnes. The Timbers erased a 2‐0 halftime deficit behind two goals from Will Johnson for a 2‐2 draw at Colorado. Saturday marks Houston’s second trip to Portland since the Timbers joined MLS in 2011 and the only meeting between the clubs this season.
HOUSTON VS. PORTLAND The Dynamo are 2‐0‐1 all‐time against the Timbers. The clubs played to a 0‐0 draw last May in the first‐ever night game at BBVA Compass Stadium and their lone meeting last season. Houston earned a win it its only visit to Portland, a 2‐0 victory at JELD‐WEN Field on Oct. 14, 2011 with Andre Hainault and Danny Cruz scoring for the Dynamo in a key win that helped their playoff position and left Portland with a tough road to the postseason. Exactly two months earlier Adam Moffat helped beat his former team with a stunning 40‐yard strike for the opening goal just three weeks after being traded by the Timbers. Ten minutes later, Brian Ching slotted home a feed from Brad Davis for the 2‐0 lead. Jack Jewsbury brought Portland a goal closer with a header in the 56th minute, but Houston held on for the win. Moffat Trade: In July 2011, midfielder Adam Moffat was traded from Portland to Houston in exchange for defender Mike Chabala and midfielder Lovel Palmer. Since the trade, Moffat has appeared in 50 games for the Dynamo (48 starts), including a starting role in all ten playoff games over the last two seasons. Moffat has added five goals and seven assists in orange.

DYNAMO NOTES Dynamo extend home unbeaten streak to 34 games with 2‐0 win over San Jose: The Dynamo extended their home unbeaten streak to 34 games in all competitions with a 2‐0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night. With the win, the Dynamo equaled Real Salt Lake’s Major League Soccer record home unbeaten streak in all competitions (includes CONCACAF Champions League and playoffs) and can set a new mark when they host the Chicago Fire on April 14. Will Bruin scored his first goal of the season and Giles Barnes scored for the second consecutive game as the Dynamo defeated last year’s Supporters’ Shield winners to remain unbeaten at BBVA Compass Stadium. Bruin, who set a franchise record with 16 goals last season, scored his first goal of the 2013 season in the 17th minute. Boniek Garcia settled a ball near the corner and slipped around Justin Morrow before sliding a pass in front of the penalty spot, where Bruin finished for a 1‐0 Houston lead. Shortly before halftime, Barnes made a darting run from the top of the box and met a perfectly placed cross from Brad Davis with a brave header past onrushing San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 2‐0 advantage.
DYNAMO IN HISTORIC HOME TERRITORY
The Dynamo have equaled Real Salt Lake for the longest home unbeaten streak in all competitions in MLS history: The Dynamo are unbeaten in 34 consecutive home games in all competitions, including: 28 regular season games, a 2011 playoff win over Philadelphia (29 overall), two Champions League games in 2012 (31), playoff victories over Sporting KC and D.C. United in 2012 (33) and a Champions League win over Santos Laguna on March 5 (34). With a win or a tie against Chicago on April 14, the Dynamo will set a new MLS record for consecutive home games without defeat, surpassing Real Salt Lake’s mark set from 2009‐11.
The Dynamo also have the second‐longest regular season home unbeaten streak in MLS history: The Dynamo extended their regular season home unbeaten streak to 28 games with a 2‐0 win over San Jose on Saturday. It is the second‐longest streak in league history, one shy of Real Salt Lake’s regular season record of 29 games. If Houston wins its next two home games (April 14 vs. Chicago and April 28 vs. Colorado), it will break Real Salt Lake’s regular season record of 29 games. The Dynamo have not lost a home game in over 21 months, with their last home defeat on June 18, 2011, a 2‐0 loss to Columbus. DYNAMO NOTES
Dynamo become third team in U.S. pro sports history to play 20 games in new stadium without defeat: With a 2‐0 win over San Jose on Saturday, the Dynamo became one of only three teams in the history of the major North American professional sports leagues to go undefeated in their first 20 regular season games at a home venue. The first team to reach 20 home games in a new home without defeat was the Washington Capitols of the Basketball Association of America (predecessor of todayʹs NBA), who won their first 27 games at Uline Arena in 1946‐1947. The team was coached by Red Auerbach (his first season in the league). The second team to go undefeated in their first 20 regular season games at a home venue was the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, who won their first 22 games at Staples Center (2001‐2002). *Note courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau, Official Statistician of Major League Soccer. Dynamo begin 2013 with best start in club history: The Dynamo improved to 3‐1‐0 this season with Saturday’s 2‐0 win over San Jose for the best start to a season in club history. The previous best four‐game starts to a campaign were in 2012 and 2010 (2‐1‐1 in both seasons). Other Houston starts since 2006: 1‐1‐2 (2011); 0‐2‐2 (2009); 0‐1‐3 (2008); 1‐2‐1 (2007) and 2‐2 (2006). In addition, the Dynamo have won their first three home games in a season for the first time in club history. Bruin, Davis reach milestones in win over San Jose: Forward Will Bruin scored his 22nd goal in all competitions with the Dynamo on Saturday. Bruin is now tied with Stuart Holden for fourth on the franchise list. Brad Davis provided the assist on Giles Barnes’ goal as the club’s all‐time assist leader recorded his 75th regular season assist with the Dynamo.
Three Dynamo players appear in 2014 World Cup qualifiers: The final round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil continued on March 22 and 26 with two games within the ten‐game CONCACAF Hexagonal round, and three Dynamo players featured for their respective national teams. Midfielder Brad Davis came off the bench in the 71st minute of the 0‐0 draw at Mexico on March 26. Defender Jermaine Taylor played 90 minutes in both of Jamaicaʹs World Cup qualifiers. The Reggae Boyz tied Panama, 1‐1 at home on March 22, before losing at Costa Rica 2‐0 on March 26. Midfielder Boniek Garcia also added two more caps to his resume, playing 90 minutes in both of Hondurasʹ Hexagonal matches. Los Catrachos came from behind to tie Mexico, 2‐2, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on March 22, before falling on the road to Panama 2‐0 on March 26. All three players returned to the starting lineup on Saturday vs. San Jose.
Better late than never: The Dynamo have scored 4 of 8 goals in the 2013 regular season after the 75th minute, with two late goals in a 2‐0 win over D.C. United on March 2 and a pair of late tallies on March 17 in Dallas. The late goals continue a trend for Houston, which set a franchise record with 17 goals in the final 15 minutes of games in 2012 after scoring 14 late goals in 2011. The 17 late goals in a season were historic, with only the 2012 San Jose Earthquakes (22) and 2009 Real Salt Lake (19) scoring more goals after the 75th minute since 2006 (more details on page 5). The Dynamo also scored a late goal (Brad Davis, 89th minute) in a 1‐0 win over Santos Laguna on March 5.
Dynamo offseason: The entire starting lineup from the 2012 MLS Cup final could return for the Dynamo in 2013. Calen Carr, who scored the opening goal in the final, is recovering from offseason surgery on his left knee. Outside of Carr, the other ten starters from the 2012 MLS Cup final all started on March 2 vs. D.C. United. The chart below details the offseason for the Dynamo, with notes on the incoming and outgoing players.
