I’m not at all happy. I started a process that for the first time as a head coach that I lose by five goals. As a player, I never experienced this either, so I take this all as a learning lesson, and I take out conclusions. I’ve been respectful with the players that I have inherited, that I accepted, and I have given them enough time to change. Honestly the game was disastrous. We knew the quality of our opposition and they marked the major difference between the team in first and the team in last, so there is a big difference.” On the expectation of seeing change so soon: “The magic doesn’t exist in soccer and here you repeatedly see mistakes that happened last season. My decision to come to San Jose was because it’s a long-term plan. I didn’t think that today we would be first. Simply, I am looking for a style of play and even if they were to score 10 goals, I’d have the same mentality because I like a certain style of soccer. I would never play defensively, for example play with a 5-4-1 formation. I would never do this because it wouldn’t be me. It wouldn’t be the way I train. It wouldn’t help contribute to a society that contracted me knowing how I play.” SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER TOMMY THOMPSON On the result: “We weren’t good enough today, it’s as simple as that, but no matter what happens, whether we lose 4-1 at New York Red Bulls or we lose 5-0 at home to LAFC, we’re going to keep believing. I think Matias has something special. We just talked for 30 minutes, and I think we’re going to have a different belief this year, but good things take time. I want to thank the fans for believing in us, for staying at that game. I know how hard it is to watch a game like that. I believe, and I know Matias believes that we’re going to change, and so we’re going to continue doing everything we can to make things better here.”

OUR FEARLESS LEADER Matias Almeyda was hired as the 12th head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes on Oct. 8, 2018. Almeyda possesses an extensive background both as a player and manager. Prior to his arrival in San Jose, he most recently served as head coach of Chivas de Guadalajara from September 2015 to June 2018, where he led the club to five trophies in his three seasons. During his tenure, Almeyda managed numerous Mexican National Team players, including Carlos Salcedo, Omar Bravo, Alan Pulido, Oswaldo Alanis, Rodolfo Pizarro, Miguel Angel Ponce and Isaac Brizuela. Almeyda was named the 2018 Concacaf Men’s Football Coach of the Year after his side won the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League with consecutive wins over MLS clubs Seattle Sounders FC (3-1 agg.), New York Red Bulls (1-0 agg.) and Toronto FC (3-3 agg.; 4-2 PKs). It marked the club’s first CONCACAF Champions League title since 1962, the first year of the competition’s existence, and secured Chivas’ first-ever qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup. In addition to their international success, Chivas also performed well domestically under Almeyda. Chivas won the nation’s biannual tournament, Copa MX, in 2015 (Apertura) and 2017 (Clausura), as well as the 2016 Supercopa MX. The club also won the Clausura 2017 Liga MX championship, their first league title in more than 20 years. He was subsequently named Liga MX’s Best Coach after winning the league double. Prior to joining Chivas in 2015, Almeyda was head coach for multiple clubs in his native Argentina. In June of 2011, Almeyda made the rare transition from player to head coach, where he was tasked with leading a River Plate side that had just suffered relegation. In his debut season as manager, Almeyda led the Argentine power to a commanding 20-5-13 record and promotion back to the nation’s top league. The team also reached the semifinals of Copa Argentina with five consecutive victories, in which they allowed one total goal, before falling to Racing in penalties. Almeyda left River Plate in November of 2012, joining Argentina’s Club Atletico Banfield a few months later. Banfield had also recently suffered relegation and turned to Almeyda to restore the club to the Primera División. Banfield won the championship and earned promotion in his first season, finishing with a 22-8-12 record and +31 goal differential, scoring a league-best 71 goals in 42 games. Only one other team finished with more than 54 goals that season. After avoiding relegation in 2014, Almeyda’s side surged ahead in 2015, finishing in eighth place in the 30-team league with a 14-8-8 record and earning qualification for the 2016 Copa Sudamericana. Almeyda departed for Chivas after the team’s successful 2015 season. Almeyda became a head coach after a lengthy playing career that featured stints in five countries. The defensive midfielder played in nearly 300 club matches, including 129 in Italy’s top-flight Serie A, 63 in Argentina’s Primera División and 28 in Spain’s La Liga, also making 20 appearances in UEFA Champions League competition. He featured for some of the world’s most storied clubs, including Inter Milan, Lazio, Sevilla and River Plate. Among the trophies he helped lift as a player are three Argentinian championships (’93, ’95, ’96), one Copa Libertadores (’96), one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (’99), one UEFA Super Cup (’00), three Italian Cups (‘98, ‘00, ’02) and one Italian championship (’00). Almeyda started and ended his playing career at River Plate, retiring in 2011 and immediately taking the reins as head coach at 37 years of age. Internationally, Almeyda made 35 appearances for the Argentina National Team, scoring five goals. He represented his country at the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS AT LA GALAXY - L 1-2 MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers did not surrender a goal from the run of play, but fell 2-1 on the road to the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park. The Galaxy tallied two goals from the penalty spot, while Jeremy Ebobisse recorded his second goal of the season in the Timbers’ fourth consecutive road match to begin the 2019 season. Key plays Holding a spell of possession in the Galaxy’s half of the field, Diego Valeri dribbled along the end line and slotted a pass back to the edge of the box that deflected off a Galaxy player and landed for Sebastián Blanco, who fired a swerving strike from just inside the box, but goalkeeper David Bingham parried the attempt away in the 21st minute. The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted from the penalty spot after Portland was whistled for a foul on Ibrahimovic inside the box. Driving forward on the counter-attack, Ebobisse helped create a turnover near midfield and poked the ball to Blanco. He surged down field toward goal and unleashed a strike from the edge of the box that went just over the crossbar in the 40th minute. The Timbers leveled the match in the 44th minute as Chara, Guzmán and Valeri combined to set up the goal. Chara dribbled through the midfield and passed the ball to Guzmán near the edge of the box. Guzmán quickly played the ball to Valeri, who immediately delivered the ball back to Guzmán making a run into the box. Guzmán then sent a low, hard pass across the face of goal to Ebobisse for the finish from close range. Goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made a key stop in the 60th minute to deny Ibrahimovic. Rolf Feltscher played a cross into the box from the right side and Ibrahimovic fired a shot from near the six-yard box, but Attinella came off his line quickly to smother the attempt. Ibrahimovic was awarded a second penalty after the Timbers were whistled for a foul inside the box in the 64th minute and he put the Galaxy in front by a score of 2-1.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese Overall thoughts on the match… “Today I was proud of my team. I was proud of my team. I was proud of what we did. I thought that we did a lot of good things. I thought that we were a difficult team to be able to break down. I thought we created chances. I thought we had good energy. We played together. This team is going to win more games than lose games and today I leave from here with a sensation that we are just about to win the first match. And the things that are out of our control, maybe they will go different.” On the team’s defensive performance with changes made for the game… “It went very well. I felt that we matched up well. We were able to defend well. Yes they created some good crosses, but we handled it very well. I don’t think they had that many shots. I think they hit a post in the first half. They didn’t create much, even though, yes, they did have the ball, but we closed the spaces I thought we did a fantastic job, especially the guys in the back to make sure that we were very disciplined.” Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara On his thoughts on the game… “I think we played a better game today. We tried to keep a little bit more of the ball, and create more opportunities to score.” On playing his 250th game overall with the Timbers (regular season and playoffs)… “It wasn’t a good result because we didn’t win, and that’s hard. At the same time I’m happy to play my 250th game with the team and now we need to look forward.” On building on the positives from the match… “I believe that we have a good team. Right now is a tough moment for us, but we have the next week to prepare for the next game and I think it will be very different.”
