PORTLAND TIMBERS vs CHIVAS USA PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore. April 12, 2014 (WEEK 6, MLS Game #51) 7:30 p.m.PT (KPDX/Estrella) Two Western Conference clubs looking for a victory to get back on track meet on Saturday evening when the Portland Timbers play host to Chivas USA at Providence Park. The Timbers are still searching for win No. 1 of 2014, after being hauled back into a late 4-4 draw by arch-rivals Seattle Sounders FC at home last weekend. Chivas USA have now gone four games without a win after opening the season with a victory, following their 3-0 home loss to arch-rivals LA Galaxy. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. The season before, Chivas USA had won all three meetings between the teams.  When the Timbers defeated Chivas USA 5-0 last Oct. 26, it was their first win ever at StubHub Center. They were 0-5-2 combined previously in Carson against both Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy.  Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. CHV: P3 W2 L0 T1 … Wilmer Cabrera vs. POR: first game PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers saw their winless start to 2014 extended in the cruelest fashion, Seattle Sounders FC hitting for two late goals to leave the teams in a 4-4 draw on Saturday afternoon at Providence Park. The Timbers are in eighth place in the Western Conference with 3 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC opened the scoring in the third minute when a corner kick was served in by Jalil Anibaba and slammed into the roof of the goal by an unmarked Kenny Cooper. But Portland answered six minutes later when Diego Chara stripped a defender, ran through the defense down the middle of the field and slotted home a shot from outside the area.  The Timbers took the lead in the 14th minute. Diego Valeri took a pass from Michael Harrington in the corner of the goal area with his back to the goal, spun away and chipped perfectly with his left foot off the crossbar and over the line. But the scores were level again in the 24th minute when Obafemi Martins found a streaking Clint Dempsey, who slotted past Timbers goalkeeper Andrew Weber as he charged off his line.  The Timbers hit for two quick goals early in the second half, the first coming when Chara found open space in midfield, hared forward and uncorked a right-footed blast from 25 yards out that sailed into the top corner. Just a minute later, Maximiliano Urruti stripped a defender on the left wing and left fly a drive that curled just inside the far post and outside the reach of a diving Stefan Frei.  But Sounders FC still had another answer. First, in the 86th minute, a cross from Lamar Neagle received a slight flick by Martins and Dempsey tapped in from close range. Then, substitute Ben Zemanski tripped DeAndre Yedlin in the area and was whistled for a penalty. Dempsey calmly converted the spot kick to complete the hat trick and comeback.  Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made two changes that suffered a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Alvas Powell came into the back four for Jack Jewsbury, and Kalif Alhassan started in place of Gaston Fernandez.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-1-2-3): Andrew Weber - Alvas Powell, Norberto Paparatto, Pa Modou Kah, Michael Harrington - Diego Valeri - Diego Chara, Will Johnson (Steve Zakuani 89) - Kalif Alhassan, Maximiliano Urruti (Frederic Piquionne 84), Darlington Nagbe (Ben Zemanski 85). TEAM NEWS  With the incredible late draw with Seattle, the Timbers had their season-opening winless streak extended to five games, their longest to start the year in four MLS seasons.  “We had our foot on their throat at 4-2, could have got the fifth goal. We had several chances, but you shouldn’t need to get the fifth goal when you’re up 4-2,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “For me, the way we played in the attack was encouraging, but the mistakes that we made in around our box, in around our backs, as encouraging as our performance was, that part of our team was very discouraging and concerning.”  Coming into the Seattle match, Diego Chará had scored two goals in 91 career league matches in MLS. Chará scored twice against Seattle – both on stunning long-range strikes from well outside the box.  “We should have won that game. So to score two goals for me is good, but I’d rather see a win than see two goals,” Chara said. “ … It is definitely special to score two goals on my birthday, but like I said earlier, to win the game would be greater satisfaction. We have to keep working hard until we do that.”  Diego Valeri scored his first goal of the season, netting in the first half. Valeri had 10 goals a season ago, his first in MLS.  Maximiliano Urruti scored his first goal of the season, his second in 12 MLS games. His first came last Sept. 29, for the Timbers, vs. the LA Galaxy.  “Diego Valeri, I thought was back to himself, absolutely tremendous today, got his first goal, he will be unlocked now. Maxi Urruti, I thought really had a solid game, got his first goal. I thought Kalif [Alhassan] and Darlington [Nagbe] were very threatening. I thought the midfield, Will Johnson and [Diego] Chara, were also tremendous,” said Porter.  All four goals scored by the Timbers came from open play. Of their first three, just one had come from run of play.  “We played better in the attack and pressed better as well, and that’s a big part of our DNA. It’s being dynamic, it’s being skillful and intelligent in how we connect and combine, but you have to be dynamic 1-v-1 and you have to be dynamic in penetrating and threatening off the ball,” said Porter. “If you don’t, you die in beauty, you have too much of the ball, you don’t penetrate enough and you don’t have enough purpose and you don’t create enough. I think having two wingers that run at guys and wingers that get in behind helped us.”  For a second consecutive match, the Timbers allowed the match-deciding goal in the final 10 minutes, after Mauro Diaz hit for the 84th-minute game-winner in the 2-1 loss to FC Dallas.  “We’ve got to be able to shut that game down, and shutting it down means you’re making plays, stopping guys from serving, you’re tracking runners, because late in the game you know guys are going to get a little bit more reckless throwing numbers forward, throwing balls forward,” Porter said. “To win games, we have to stop guys from getting service in the box and be able to cut off crosses, because late in games, this is what teams will do.” CHIVAS USA Chivas USA returned home and had their winless run extended to four games, falling 3-0 to the LA Galaxy in the first SuperClásico at StubHub Center. Chivas USA sit in sixth place in the Western Conference with 5 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH  The Galaxy put the game in a 20-minute flurry on either side of halftime. First, in the 37th minute, Galaxy right back Dan Gargan sent a header into the box that snuck past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to a waiting Robbie Keane, who walked the ball over the line for the opener.  Four minutes later, Stefan Ishizaki collected a well-placed pass from Juninho, raced past the Chivas defense and hit home with a stellar chip to the far-side netting.  Nine minutes into the second half, it was 3-0 to the Galaxy. After a give-and-go from Keane to Landon Donovan, Baggio Husidic found just enough space at the top of the box and beat Kennedy with a low drive to the left corner.  Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera made two changes to the team that reached a late 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Andrew Jean-Baptiste came into the back four for Tony Lochhead, and Luke Moore started in place of Leandro Barrera.  CHIVAS USA (4-4-2): Dan Kennedy - Eric Avila, Eriq Zavaleta, Carlos Bocanegra, Andrew Jean-Baptiste Mauro Rosales, Agustin Pelletieri, Carlos Alvarez, Thomas McNamara (Kris Tyrpak 66) - Luke Moore (Leandro Barrera 46), Erick Torres (Adolfo Bautista 79). TEAM NEWS  Chivas USA had their winless run extended to four games in the loss to the Galaxy. The Galaxy have a sixgame undefeated streak alive in SuperClásicos.

“Since I’ve been here, this was the worst game,” Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “As a team, individually and collectively, we didn’t play well. From the beginning it didn’t feel good and the team never looked good. This was not a game we could take lightly, especially with the LA Galaxy. They outplayed us and we were never a threat. We never came back. It was a very, very bad day for all of us.” Chivas USA have now allowed 10 goals for the season, through five games, tied for most in MLS along with the Portland Timbers. “I think you can see, even up to this point, you can see the quality of players that we have; it’s definitely a different group. We’ve got to make sure that we’re tough. We knew this was going to be a hard season, and mentally we have to stay motivated and after a game like today, we should have everything to prove,” said goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Erick Torres saw his streak of four games with a goal come to an end, as Chivas were held without a goal for the first time this season. The MLS record for goals from the start of the season was 5 consecutive games, set by Brian McBride in 1998. “I think we have to see we haven’t played that bad throughout the year, so today we didn’t find a good shape, we didn’t find the ball, we didn’t combine, we didn’t create options,” said Cabrera. Said Torres: “Psychologically, you’re left hurt. We’ve got to try to lift ourselves and see what comes ahead. We don’t have a choice but to close our mouths and work hard.” Andrew Jean-Baptiste made his Chivas USA debut, coming in at left back in favor of Tony Lochhead. “It’s a new position. I have not played outside back in some years, but whatever coach needs me in I’m going to just go out there and try and put in 100 percent,” Jean-Baptiste said. For the first match this season, Leandro Barrera was held out of the first XI, coming on at halftime off the substitutes’ bench in place of Luke Moore. “Our lines were too separated,” Torres said. “We came out with too much respect for what the Galaxy can do offensively. We can’t let that happen.”

LAST MATCH RECAP Midfielder Diego Chara recorded the first two-goal performance of his MLS career and midfielder Diego Valeri and forward Maximiliano Urruti also scored goals as the Timbers registered a 4-4 draw against Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC in a high-scoring affair at Providence Park on April 5. Chara’s brace in addition to Valeri and Urruti’s first goals of the season helped the Timbers surmount two first-half goals from Seattle to take a 4-2 lead into the final five minutes of regulation. Seattle midfielder Clint Dempsey, who netted a hattrick, tallied twice late in the match for Sounders FC, including an 87th-minute, game-tying penalty kick. Saturday’s match was the 85th all-time meeting between the two clubs across all eras, dating back to the 1975 NASL season.

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular season home games in the team’s first three MLS seasons, even after raising the 86-yearold downtown venue’s capacity from 18,627 to 20,647 in 2013. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regularseason home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS. For the 2014 season, the stadium’s capacity was expanded to 20,814.

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turnaround season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33). Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm. Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Timbers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tournament appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Chivas USA vs. Portland Timbers

Saturday, April 12, 2014 – Providence Park; Portland, Ore. – 7:30 p.m. (PT) Local Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM

Red-and-White Head to Pacific Northwest Chivas USA continue their four-game stretch against Western Conference opponents Saturday night when they travel to the Pacific Norhtwest to face the Portland Timbers at Providence Park. The 7:30 p.m. (PT) match will mark the first leg in the three-game season series and can be heard live on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.

Last Week’s Action Chivas USA fell, 3-0, to the LA Galaxy last Sunday at the StubHub Center in the first leg of the SuperClásico. Playing as the visiting side, Galaxy took the one-game advantage in the season derby led by first-half scores from Robbie Keane and Stefan Ishizaki to go along with Baggio Husidic’s second-half tally. The Red-and-White generated solid run of play beginning in the 18th minute and got into promising spaces inside the box. Rookie midfielder Thomas McNamara worked the ball near the end line outside the left post, but his cross was deflected by visitor’s defense. A minute later, forward Erick “Cubo” Torres got off his first shot of the match near the same spot that sailed over the crossbar. Midfielder Carlos Alvarez looked to combine with striker Luke Moore – who made his second career start – in the 21st minute on a give-and-go sequence with Torres inside the arc, but Moore was unable to get off a shot before LA’s back line closed in on the threat. Galaxy went up 2-0 after goals in the 37th and 42nd minute. Defender Dan Gargan headed a ball into the short area from the right side of the box intended for Keane. As Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy came off his line to break up the pass, the ball had enough force behind it after a small collision to be pushed toward the back of the net. Five minutes later, Ishizaki took control of a pass from Juninho behind the arc and made a run toward the end line by the left post to send his floater over Kennedy and into the right side netting. Chivas looked to their bench and brought on first-year midfielder Leandro Barrera to start the second half and try and cut into the deficit, but it was the Galaxy who got on the scoresheet once more in the 56th minute on Husidic’s strike that traveled inside the left post. The Rojiblancos looked to generate chances in their attacking third and had a pair of promising looks beginning in the 81st minute. Mauro Rosales played a cross from his right wing spot to link up with Alvarez for a one-time side volley, but Galaxy keeper Brian Perk was able to collect the shot. A minute later, Rosales again looked to cross, but the Red-and-White attackers were unable to get on the end of the low liner that traveled through the box and out of bounds, keeping the Red-and-White off the scoreboard in the 3-0 result.

Red-and-White Notes Chivas Look to Secure Result in Series Opener

Chivas USA enter the first leg of the three-game season series looking to have a better showing than last season’s edition, as the Goats fell twice to their conference foe. The Red-and-White managed to secure a 1-1 tie in the second leg last year but were outscored, 8-0, in their two losses. The Goats have won two games in four all-time meetings at Portland and will look to keep the Timbers winless in thus far in the regular season and jump back into the top half of the Western Conference.

Red-and-White Continue Four-Game Stretch vs Conference Foes

Chivas USA kick off the second match of their current four-game stretch against Western Conference oppenents this Saturday. The Goats fell in their first challenge and are 0-2-1 in conference play while recording five points to sit them in sixth place heading into Week 6.

Familiar Foes Face Off at Providence Park

First-year Chivas USA defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste makes his first apperance against his old club on Saturday. Jean-Baptiste played two seasons with the Timbers and helped lead the club to the Western Conference finals last season. The University of Connecticut product was acquired by Chivas during the off-season via trade. Portland teammates Jorge Villafaña – who was sent to Portland in exchange for JeanBaptiste – and Ben Zemanski both made their MLS debuts with Chivas USA. Villafaña, a left-sided attacking midfielder, who also spent time at left back, played in 86 regular-season matches (63 starts) and registered seven goals and six assists with the Rebaño Angelino from 2007-13. Zamanski, a central midfieler, was drafted by the Red-and-White in 2010 out of the University of Akron. The fifth-year midfielder made 58 starts in 72 appearance for the Goats while recording a pair of goals to ago along with seven assists.

Red-and-White Look to Add to Positive Run

Chivas USA have begun the 2014 campaign under first-year Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera – including preseason play – unbeaten in 11 of their first 13 matches. The Red-and-White wrapped up preseason competition with a 4-0-4 record and a second-place finish in the Desert Diamond Cup. The Goats will look to bounce back from last week’s loss at home and add to their five-point output to reclaim a spot in the top half of the conference.

Kennedy Kountdown for All-Time Records

With his start in Week 4, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy passed former club standout Sacha Kljestan for second-most starts in franchise history with 115. The Red-and-White netminder also holds the second-most number of starts (114) and minutes played (10,257) in club history. Kennedy has played in at least 31 games the previous three seasons, which puts him on pace to ascend to the top spot in all three categories this year.

‘Cubo’ Torres Continues Blazing His Scoring Trail

Chivas USA striker Erick “Cubo” Torres in his second MLS season has picked up where he left off in 2013 by scoring in four consecutive matches to start the regular season. The 21-year-old is tied for the league lead with Sounder FC’s Clint Dempsey and Colorado’s Vicente Sanchez and tied former MLS standout Juan Pablo Angel for the club’s fifth all-time scoring total with 11. With 20 MLS matches under his belt, Torres is averaging just over half a goal per game. Torres is on pace to match former club standout Sacha Kljestan with 15. In addition, the Guadalajara native now ranks fifth in the all-time MLS scoring list for Mexican-born players. With his next tally, Torres would tie El Tri’s legendary striker Luis Hernandez with 12. Torres is also on pace to surpass Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s all-time record of 16. The striker joined the Red-and-White in July and finished the season with a team-high seven goals to win the club’s 2013 Golden Boot Award. Since the start of his MLS stint, “Cubo” is averaging a goal for one game and 72 minutes played.

Rosales Among League Leaders in Assists

Chivas USA midfielder Mauro Rosales has proven to be a key off-season pick-up by registering a league second-best three assists after five matches. Rosales was acquired by the Goats via trade in December after three stellar seasons with Seattle Sounders FC, where the Argentine led the Western Conference side to three-straight playoff appearances.
