FC DALLAS vs PORTLAND TIMBERS FC DALLAS STADIUM, Frisco, Texas May 8, 2013 (WEEK 11, MLS Game #92) 8 p.m. CT (TWCSN-TX; ROOT-NW) Two teams riding lengthy undefeated streaks meet in a crucial Western Conference clash when FC Dallas play host to the Portland Timbers on Wednesday evening in Frisco. West-leading FCD is 5-0-2 in its last seven games, returning to action following a 2-2 draw at Vancouver 11 days ago. The second-place Timbers are 3-0-4 in their seven games, coming off a scoreless draw with New England at home last Thursday evening. REFEREE: Juan Guzman. FCD sit atop the Western Conference with 20 points from 9 matches. LAST MATCH  FC Dallas took the lead nine minutes in. A Michel corner curled right to the goal line where Kenny Cooper came crashing in as Whitecaps defender Andy O’Brien tried to clear, and the ball deflected off O’Brien and redirected back and across the line.  The lead was doubled in the 47th minute. From near the halfway line, Michel lofted a free kick that Vancouver defender Brad Rusin headed the ball backward into his own area, and FCD center back raced to meet it, poking it past goalkeeper Joe Cannon from close range.  But Whitecaps FC pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute. Following a flurry of activity in the Dallas box which involved a fine reflex save by Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez on a Camilo attempt, the ball landed at Kekuta Manneh’s feet and he rifled a shot inside the near post.  The rookie followed that up with a surging run three minutes later, gliding past three Dallas defenders before centering across goal to Camilo, whose effort deflected off FCD defender Jair Benitez from close range, giving Fernandez little chance to react as the ball curled inside the near post.  Dallas saw their odds of escaping with a late win go down considerably when Jackson lashed out at Alain Rochat in the 77th minute, immediately earning a straight red from referee Ricardo Salazar.  FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made no changes to his team for a fourth consecutive match, keeping the team that defeated Vancouver 2-0 the week before at FC Dallas Stadium.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

FC DALLAS (4-2-3-1): Raul Fernandez - Zach Loyd, George John (London Woodberry 46), Matt Hedges, Jair Benitez - Andrew Jacobson (Je-Vaughn Watson 41), Michel - Kenny Cooper (Fabian Castillo 76), David Ferreira, Jackson (sent off 78) - Blas Perez. TEAM NEWS  FC Dallas are undefeated in seven games in a streak that began March 17, having gone 5-0-2 since.  “Either team could have won the game. We’re disappointed that you have a 2-0 lead, and you don’t walk away with the three points,” said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. “At the same time, we give Vancouver a lot of credit for just coming to us with everything they had.”  Raúl Fernández faced a season-high nine shots, and made a season-high seven saves, in ensuring FCD would come away with a point from Vancouver and maintain their undefeated streak.  “We came here to win, we came here for the three points and we’re leaving with a sour taste in our mouths almost as if we had lost the game,” said Fernández.  FC Dallas have allowed nine goals in nine games this season – but they have recorded five shutouts. They have allowed multiple goals in each of the other four contests.  “Fernández had a couple of moments where he might have handled the ball a little bit better and get a rebounds and I think Vancouver missed a couple of great opportunities there, but at the same time he probably made two great 1v1 saves that kept us ahead,” said Hyndman.  FC Dallas also had to overcome a pair of changes before the start of the second half. Andrew Jacobson had to come off before the first half was complete, and center back George John was a halftime replacement. Then FCD finished the game a man down after Jackson was sent off.  “It was huge. Huge. You have your center back, who is your best defender, out, and your best central midfielder, out. … One of our best guys is out and now we’ve got two out. So give my guys a lot of credit for not losing this game,” said Hyndman.  For a second consecutive game against Vancouver, FC Dallas took advantage of an own goal, with a deflection off Whitecaps FC center back Andy O’Brien leading to the opener. His defensive partner, Brad Rusin, contributed the opener in the 2-0 FCD win in Frisco.  The Portland match is the first of two games in four days at FC Dallas Stadium, and the start of a stretch of three home games of the next four for the club.  “It is [important],” Hyndman said. “I think you need all the points you can get and we all know how difficult it is on the road to travel in this league; the environments, the surfaces, there’s so many issues that you have to deal with. Getting the points at home if you want to be a successful team is a must.” PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers extended their MLS club record undefeated streak to seven games, playing to a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution on Thursday at Jeld-Wen Field. The Timbers are in a tie for second place in the Western Conference with 14 points from 9 matches. LAST MATCH  Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was credited with nine saves in keeping the clean sheet, six of them coming in the second half.  Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts turned in a stellar performance of his own, making three saves.  Timbers head coach Caleb Porter maintained his same team for third consecutive game, keeping the group that came back twice for a 3-2 victory against Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park.  PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-1-3): Donovan Ricketts - Michael Harrington, Mikael Silvestre (Andrew JeanBaptiste 58), Mamadou Danso, Jack Jewsbury (Kalif Alhassan 81) - Will Johnson, Diego Chara - Diego Valeri Darlington Nagbe, Ryan Johnson (Frederic Piquionne 62), Rodney Wallace. TEAM NEWS  The Timbers stretched their club-record undefeated streak, now having gone 3-0-4 since March 16.  There are games when you can’t find the goal and I thought that was the case. We’ll move on from it, obviously it’s not a loss it’s a tie and we get a point and yet we’re feeling like we let two points slip away,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “If you don’t win, you’re not going to be satisfied. We’re not satisfied with a point, but it’s also not the end of the world. We’ve played nine games now and we’ve only been beaten one time, so that’s a real positive.”  The Timbers uncorked a season-high 22 attempts at goal in the New England match, but were shut out at the offensive end for the first time this season. Only FC Dallas has now yet to be shut out in attack in MLS this season.  “We had plenty of shots. We had a lot of chances. We missed a couple breakaways and there were some point blank saves. It very easily could’ve been a different result. We were a touch off on a few finishes and their goalkeeper made some great saves,” said Porter. “In the end, that’s soccer. You leave the game and you think you’re not good enough on the attack, but in the end 22 shots is a lot on goal.”

Said fullback Jack Jewsbury: “We’ve got guys in the attacking third that are very dangerous and we’ve got to get them on the ball more. It’s a matter of the back four and the holding midfielder to break lines and not just play around the back and play a little quicker. I thought they did a good job of frustrating us at times, but we had enough shots.” But there was an injury blow for the club, after center back Mikaël Silvestre suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while stretching to clear a ball in the second half. Silvestre will be out an estimated 6-9 months, likely putting him out for the rest of the season. With center back David Horst also out for the season with a leg injury, the Timbers did announce the signing of Pa Modou Kah, a veteran to several European leagues and most recently Qatar and Saudi Arabia, to help fill the void. “We’ve had a bit of bad luck with injuries in the back line. It’s been the case where guys go in and do a great job,” said Porter. The Timbers have recorded three consecutive defensive shutouts at Jeld-Wen Field. They last conceded a goal at home in a 2-1 loss to Montréal on March 9, now 300 home minutes without a goal against. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t commend Donovan Ricketts. He made a world-class save at the end of that game to keep us level. He has been absolutely tremendous,” said Porter. “There are going to be days when our attack digs us out of a hole. That has been the case in a few games when we’ve given up goals and our attacking side has bailed us out and scored goals. Tonight, I thought our defending kept us level and Donovan probably saved us in the end.”

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter has helped lead the Timbers to a positive result in eight of the team’s first nine matches of the 2013 MLS season, including a current club-record, seven-game unbeaten stretch. Porter has been named the MLSsoccer.com Coach of the Week twice this year (Week 6, Week 9). Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a threetime All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT FC DALLAS WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2013 ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES Wednesday’s match marks the first meeting of the 2013 MLS season between FC Dallas and Portland, but the sixth meeting all-time since the start of the 2011 season. It is the fourth time the Timbers have traveled to play at FC Dallas Stadium. The Timbers have earned a draw in two of the last three matches against FC Dallas (all during the 2012 season), most recently recording a come-from-behind, 1-1 tie at JELD-WEN Field on Aug. 5, 2012. Trailing 1-0 in the 79th minute, midfielder Jack Jewsbury laced a hard volley from outside the penalty box into the back of the net for the game-tying goal. As part of a club-record, five-game home winning streak during the team’s inaugural season in 2011, the Timbers scored three goals in the first 55 minutes against FC Dallas on April 17, 2011, in the first meeting between the teams. Jewsbury (13th minute), Kenny Cooper (35) and Rodney Wallace (55) tallied the goals as Portland held off a late push for a 3-2 win at JELD-WEN Field. Two of Portland’s most lopsided defeats have come against FC Dallas Stadium a 4-0 loss on June 25, 2011, and a 5-0 loss on July 21, 2012.

LAST TIME VS. FC DALLAS An equalizing goal by midfielder Jack Jewsbury helped the Timbers end a five-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas on Aug. 5, 2012, at JELD-WEN Field. Forward Fabian Castillo, midfielder David Ferreira and defender Jair Benitez all spent time playing in Colombia’s Liga Postobon prior to joining MLS, as did Timbers midfielder Diego Chara and forwards Jose Valenica and Sebastián Rincón (although Rincón never made a first team appearance). Valencia and Castillo were teammates on Colombia’s U-20 National Team during the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which Colombia hosted. During the tournament, Castillo replaced Valencia in the 61st minute of a 2-0 group stage win against Mali on Aug. 2, 2011. Valencia scored the game’s opening goal in the 23rd minute. The duo saw the field at the same time as second-half subs in a 3-1 quarterfinal loss against Mexico on Aug. 13, 2011.

DOUBLE-DIGIT SHOTS AT HOME Portland currently maintains a notable streak of 36 consecutive home games recording 10 or more shots, which is the second-longest active streak of its kind in the league behind only Sporting Kansas City’s 44 straight home games with 10 or more shots.

Midfielder Kalif Alhassan’s next assist will be the 10th of his MLS career. Alhassan earned an assist in the season-opening 3-3 draw against New York on March 3. The Ghanaian earned a career-high six assists during the 2011 season. Midfielder Jack Jewsbury’s next goal will be the 25th of his career. Jewsbury has started each of the last five games for the Timbers. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is closing in on 10,000 minutes played in his MLS career. Following the 35th shutout of his career on May 2 against New England, Ricketts has logged 9,891 minutes for his career. If the Jamaican international plays the full 90 minutes against FC Dallas (May 8), he’ll be set to surpass the 10,000-minute mark in the 19th minute against Chivas USA on May 12.

TIMBERS DRAW NEW ENGLAND AT HOME The Timbers extended their MLS-club record unbeaten streak to seven games, playing the New England Revolution to a scoreless draw before a sellout crowd of 20,674 at JELD-WEN Field on May 2. The Timbers controlled the run of play against the Revolution, maintaining 67.4 percent of the possession, attempting a season-high nine corner kicks and holding a 22-12 edge in shots with nine shots on goal. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts recorded four saves, including two key saves in the final minutes of the match to preserve Portland’s third shutout in the last five games in a 0-0 draw. Ricketts recorded his 35th MLS career shutout, forward Darlington Nagbe attempted a team-high five shots and midfielder Diego Valeri recorded four shots in the draw for the Timbers, who move into a tie for second place with the LA Galaxy in the Western Conference. The Timbers’ seven-game unbeaten streak is tied for the longest in MLS this season.

CAREER HIGHS Timbers midfielder Will Johnson equaled a career high with his third goal of the season in a 1-0 win on April 14 against San Jose. Johnson, who recorded career highs of three goals, three assists and nine points in 26 games last year for Real Salt Lake, is on the cusp of breaking his career highs in all three categories through just nine matches this season. In 810 minutes of action, Johnson has registered three goals, one assist and seven points for Portland.

A RESILIENT GROUP Through the first nine games of the season, the Timbers are the only MLS club to earn a .500 or better record when conceding the first goal of a game. Portland has conceded the first goal in five of nine matches, but the team has battled back to earn at least a point in four of those five games (1-1-3 record). The Timbers trailed twice against Sporting KC on April 27 before earning a 3-2 win on the road. Portland has surmounted a pair of two-goal deficits this season (3-1 on March 3 vs. New York; 2-0 on March 30 at Colorado) to earn draws. No other team in the league has accomplished that feat so far this season.

TIMBERS HOST TWO FRIENDLIES The Timbers will play host to Mexican club Monarcas Morelia in an international friendly July 3 at JELD-WEN Field at 8 p.m. (Pacific) and English Premier League club Norwich City FC on Wednesday, July 24, at JELD-WEN Field at 8 p.m. (Pacific). Monarcas advanced to the first round of the Liga MX playoffs (Liguilla) where they will face Cruz Azul in a two-legged quarterfinal series on May 9 and 12. Norwich sit in 16th place in the EPL standings with two matches remaining on the schedule (May 12 vs. West Brom; May 19 at Manchester City).
