D.C. UNITED vs PORTLAND TIMBERS RFK MEMORIAL STADIUM, Washington, D.C. May 25, 2013 (WEEK 13, MLS Game #114) 7 p.m. ET (UDN; ROOT-NW) Having put an end to their club-record losing streak, D.C. United will now look to stop a long winless run when they play host to the rolling Portland Timbers when the clubs face off Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United halted a sevengame losing skid last weekend at home, coming back for a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City. The Timbers extended their club record undefeated streak to 10 games last weekend, coming back for a 2-2 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC. REFEREE: Jose Carlos Rivero. D.C. United holds the only victory in the three meetings all-time, a 3-2 win at Jeld-Wen Field on May 29, 2011.  Coaches record: Ben Olsen vs. POR: P1 W0 L0 T1 … Caleb Porter vs. DC: first game D.C. UNITED D.C. United put an end to their club-record seven-game losing streak, coming back for a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium. United are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 5 points from 11 matches. LAST MATCH  Kansas City took the lead at the hour mark. Via a corner kick by Graham Zusi, defender Ike Opara jumped to head the ball and the ball sailed past, deflecting off the head of United defender Ethan White and into the net.  But the home side were even five minutes later. Chris Pontius delivered a beautiful ball from the left flank to Kyle Porter, and he slipped a picture-perfect finish inside the back post from inside the goal area.  United head coach Ben Olsen made three changes to the team that fell 2-1 to FC Dallas in Frisco. Bill Hamid came back in between the posts for Joe Willis, Daniel Woolard started in the back four for James Riley, and Taylor Kemp came into the midfield in place of Raphael Augusto.  D.C. UNITED (4-4-2): Bill Hamid - Chris Korb, Ethan White, Dejan Jakovic, Daniel Woolard - Kyle Porter, Perry Kitchen, Nick DeLeon, Taylor Kemp (Chris Pontius 46) - Dwayne De Rosario (Carlos Ruiz 90), Casey Townsend (Lionard Pajoy 59). TEAM NEWS  D.C. United put an end to their all-time club record losing streak of seven games over the weekend, coming back for the 1-1 draw with Sporting. United’s nine-game winless streak is one game shy of the all-time club record, set July 4-Aug. 25, 2002.  “There’s a lot to work on. I’m not sugar-coating this tie, but it beats losing,” United head coach Ben Olsen said. “I think there’s a little bit of an exhale [in the locker room], if I’m completely honest with you. It’s not easy to lose this many games and not have doubt. I think this gives them a chance to exhale and maybe smile for a day or two and understand that here’s an opportunity to really change things next weekend against Portland.”  Making his fifth consecutive start, Kyle Porter scored his first professional goal to give United a share of the points. Porter has recorded his first MLS assist the week before at FC Dallas.  “We asked a lot of Kyle this week. It's one of those things where you're new and you get into the game or in a team and you have a couple of games. You have some moments and you do OK. You can either go down or

move it up a little bit,” said Olsen. “We asked him to step it up and start producing, whether it was assists or goals and don't be OK with just being a starter now. Get good minutes, push yourself and get your name out there. I'm glad he did that.” Chris Pontius was able to make his first appearance in four matches, since April 21, coming on at halftime, and his service set up the United goal, his second assist of the season. “My touch was off. At least I had an impact in the game with an assist, but other than that, when you come back you kind of second-guess yourself on a lot of your decisions. It's not natural,” said Pontius. “Once I get into a full week of training, hopefully I can be a lot cleaner in the game.” Primarily a wide midfielder since coming into the league last season, Nick DeLeon moved into a central midfield role alongside Perry Kitchen. “I thought he filled it in very nicely,” Olsen said. “When you do that sometimes, you now have options going forward. And Nick’s one of those kids that I feel comfortable plugging in anywhere on the field except center back. He’s one of those guys that kind of gets it. I’m looking forward to him being on the field consistently for us.” “[Kitchen] is good in the middle and he’s a hard worker and he’s fun to play with. I think if I do stay in the middle, our relationship will just get better and better,” said DeLeon. “ … If you want to put me wherever, I’ll play there and give it everything I have. It’s pretty cool that [Olsen] said that. That shows a lot of confidence in me, so that’s definitely pretty cool.” Taylor Kemp made his full professional debut, starting wide on the right of midfield and playing 45 minutes. Neither Rafael nor Raphael Augusto were available for the match. “We've got a couple guys getting some minutes that usually wouldn't. I thought [Taylor] Kemp did OK for his first game,” said Olsen. “ … Rafael got a concussion in training. [Raphael] Augusto had the weekend off for some family issues that he needs to take care of.” Bill Hamid also returned to the lineup after Joe Willis took his place in the 2-1 loss to FC Dallas the weekend before. “It just goes back to set pieces, and we as a team have to do better on set pieces. We did a good job locking them down,” said Hamid. “They got a lucky bounce on one of them, and that happens. Looking at the game throughout the whole 90 minutes, as a team we did really good on set pieces.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers stretched their MLS club-record undefeated streak to 10 games, twice coming back before settling for a 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday afternoon at BC Place. The Timbers are in third place in the Western Conference with 19 points from 12 matches. LAST MATCH  Whitecaps FC took the lead in the 24th minute. Timbers midfielder Will Johnson fouled Camilo just outside the area on the right side, and he took the resulting freekick himself, curling it over the wall and into the top right corner.  The Timbers pulled even in the 62nd minute. Will Johnson created the penalty with a shot that struck Andy O'Brien's arm as it bent goalward, and then took his own spot kick and leveled the score.  But moments later, Vancouver again nosed in front. This time Gershon Koffie bent a shot into the top right corner of Donovan Ricketts’ goal after Camilo teed him up at the edge of the area.  Ten minutes later, Whitecaps FC went up a man when Futty Danso appeared to bring Camilo down as they both chased down a ball over the top toward the Portland goal.  Yet the Timbers had the final answer. Jose Adolfo Valencia ran under Will Johnson's high, hopeful ball and and brought it under control before cutting back past a defender and slotting home coolly past Brad Knighton.  Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made no changes to the team that rolled to a 3-0 win against Chivas USA at Jeld-Wen Field.  PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-3-1): Donovan Ricketts - Jack Jewsbury (Jose Adolfo Valencia 77), Andrew JeanBaptiste, Mamadou Danso (sent off 81), Michael Harrington - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Darlington Nagbe (Kalif Alhassan 34), Diego Valeri, Rodney Wallace - Ryan Johnson (Frederic Piquionne 62). TEAM NEWS  The Timbers are still the only team in MLS undefeated on the road this season, following the draw with Vancouver. The Timbers extended their MLS club record undefeated streak to 10 games with the result.  “The reality is it’s tough to go on the road in this league and get a result so it’s a good feeling but we know we’ve got another tough test the next couple of weeks so we’ve got three in a row on the road now and next up is D.C. and we look to go there and pick up three points,” said defender Jack Jewsbury.  “This team continues to do things that impress me,” Timbers head coach Caleb Porter said. “We’ve gone 10 games without a loss and throughout those 10 games we’ve faced adversity and in some games have had to come from behind one or two goals, and this is just another example of what this team is made of.”

The Timbers allowed the opening goal for the sixth time in 11 games – and remarkably came away with a result for the fifth time. They are 1-1-4 when conceding first, the best record in MLS. A year ago, the Timbers were 112-5 when allowing the opening goal. “This team just seems to have that never quit, refuse to lose [attitude],” Porter said. “And you hope you can kind of harness it in a team and some teams just never have it, but this team has it. We’ve seen that, and it’s not just the first game we’ve shown that, but in several games our backs are against the wall and we somehow find a way to get a result.” Will Johnson took over the Timbers team lead with his fifth goal of the season and second in as many matches. He also contributed an assist, the first time in his MLS career he’s had a goal and an assist in the same game. “We didn’t feel like we played particularly well and even when you’re a man down, you’re a goal down and you’re on the road there’s still ten minutes to go, you don’t like your chances but you don’t give up,” said Johnson. “You fight and you try because we’ve got a thousand fans that sit up in the stands who expect nothing less. We recognize we’ve got to fight even if it doesn’t look like there’s any chance and the task looks impossible we don’t give up and we fight.” Making his first appearance since the third game of the season, March 16 in Seattle, José Adolfo Valencia scored his first MLS goal. “He’s the type of guy that you’re going to put in when you’re chasing the game, and we haven’t been chasing games that many games,” Porter said. “We felt like we needed a little bit of an extra push with a player, and he’s a dynamic player. He pulled a play off to help us get the point.” There will be yet another change in the Timbers central defense after Mamadou Danso was sent off in the 81st minute. He and Andrew Jean-Baptiste were playing a third consecutive match together following the injury to Mikaël Silvestre.

GAME NOTES Kyle Porter Heating Up Midfielder Kyle Porter notched his first MLS goal in United’s match against Sporting Kansas City on 5/19, with his family from Toronto in attendance. Porter also registered his first MLS assist in the previous match against FC Dallas on 5/11. Strength of Schedule United’s strength of schedule is among the highest in MLS. The Black-and-Red has matched up against each of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference twice already this season: the first-placed New York Red Bulls (7-4-3), secondplaced Sporting Kansas City (6-4-3) and third-placed Houston Dynamo (6-4-2). Additionally, United has faced the top two teams in the Western Conference already as well; first-placed and League-leading FC Dallas (7-2-3) and defeating second-placed Real Salt Lake (6-5-2) on 3/9. And United will host the Western Conference’s third-placed Portland Timbers to RFK Stadium in tonight’s match. “May” I Have Another? The month of May has been quite kind to D.C. United, as it leads all MLS teams in all-time goals during the month (157), 21 ahead of New York (136). Proven Goal Scorers Dwayne De Rosario and Carlos Ruiz account for 189 total goals combined, more then any other two active players on any other MLS club roster. Hamid Trifecta United goalkeeper Bill Hamid made his return to the Blackand-Red starting XI after sitting out the match against FC Dallas on 5/11. In United’s last match against Sporting Kansas City, Bill Hamid made five saves and conceded just one goal. The 22-year-old netminder was also named to the MLS Team of the Week (Week 12). This honor marks Hamid’s third individual award already this season, adding to his MLS Save of the Week (Week 1) and MLS Player of the Week (Week 3) awards. Drawn Out Portland boasts a 4-1-7 record thus far in 2013. The Timbers’ seven ties most in MLS, with the San Jose Earthquakes right behind Portland with six draws. Rough Road Totals Since coming into the League in 2011, Portland has only managed a road record of 4-21-15, a .225 away winning percentage. In 2013, the team hold a 1-0-5 record on the road.

Portland at RFK Stadium The first and only time the Timbers visited RFK Stadium, Portland and United played to a 1-1 draw on 10/19/11. United vs. Timbers Since MLS added the Portland Timbers to the League in 2011, United has faced the West Coast team a total of three times, accumulating a 1-2-0 record. United has also outscored Portland five goals to four. Turning the Corner With a 1-1 draw and a point at home vs. Sporting Kansas City last Sunday, United put an end to its seven-game losing streak, longest in club history. Akron Connections Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made quite a name for himself when he coached the University of Akron Men’s team from 2006-12. Porter’s 2010 College Cupwinning Akron team featured United’s Perry Kitchen and Chris Korb. The Portland Timbers also field three former Porter-era Akron players: Darlington Nagbe, Michael Nanchoff and Ben Zemanski. From 2011-12, Porter led the U.S. U-23 National Team, where he chose to include Kitchen and United teammate Ethan White for his first U.S. U-23 camp in Germany. Additionally, during 2012 London Olympic qualifying, Porter again called upon Kitchen – who vicecaptained the squad – and United teammate Bill Hamid to represent the United States. Vulnerable Interval In 2013, Portland has allowed six of its 14 goals allowed (43%) between the 16-30th minutes and has conceded nine in the first half (64%). Conversely, D.C. United has scored 33% of its goals in the 16-30th minutes, with 50% coming in the first half. April Showers bring May Power United’s Dwayne De Rosario leads all active players in goals (23) during the month of May. The Change Up United had five fresh starters in its lineup for the 2-1 loss vs. FC Dallas on 5/11, and last week, Taylor Kemp made his MLS debut in a 1-1 tie with Sporting Kansas City.

Open Cup Roster Assignments On May 28, D.C. United will face USL PRO affiliate the Richmond Kickers in the third round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Black-and-Red coaching staff made the decision to recall Richmond loanees Taylor Kemp, Conor Shanosky and Casey Townsend while Andrew Dykstra and Michael Seaton will remain with the Kickers for the duration of the domestic tournament. Dykstra logged 90 minutes in Richmond’s 4-1 second-round win vs. Icon FC on 5/21.

MILESTONES Winning History D.C. United is one of Major League Soccer’s most storied clubs. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record four times (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998. One Win Shy of 300 If D.C. United claims victory tonight over the Portland Timbers, then it will be the club’s 300th win across all competitions, making the Black-and-Red the second team in MLS history to achieve the mark. The LA Galaxy was the first team in MLS to achieve 300 victories. De Rosario ties Twellman In the Black-and-Red’s 5/11 match against FC Dallas, United captain Dwayne De Rosario tallied his 101st career goal, tying Taylor Twellman’s mark as MLS’ sixth all-time leadingscorer. De Rosario would be the outright sixth all-time leader if he can score in tonight’s match. Additionally, De Rosario is one game-winning goal away from tying Twellman (and Edson Buddle) for fifth all-time in the category. Young League, Younger Talent On January 14, Homegrown player Michael Seaton, 17, became MLS’ first-ever signing to be born after the League’s inception in 1996. Best of the Best D.C. United is the only club in MLS to feature three active players who have won the MLS All-Star MVP award – Carlos Ruiz (2003), Dwayne De Rosario (2006), and Chris Pontius (2012).

Multi-Goal Magicians D.C. United forward Carlos Ruiz is currently tied with Blackand-Red legend Jamie Moreno for the fourth most multi-goal games in MLS history (17). Ruiz would hold the fourth most multi-goal games (outright) if he scores two or more goals in this match. Additionally, Dwayne De Rosario is currently tied with Juan Pablo Angel for eighth most multi-goal games and would move to eighth (outright) if he can find the net two or more times in this game. Ruiz Looking to Eclipse Lassiter United forward Carlos Ruiz is one goal away from being MLS’ ninth (outright) leading-scorer all time, currently tied for ninth with Roy Lassiter on the list with 88 goals. Ruiz is also fourth all-time in goals scored among active players, with teammate Dwayne De Rosario in second place in the category with 101 goals. 20/20 Vision With an assist in United’s 4/21 match vs. the Philadelphia Union, D.C. United midfielder Dwayne De Rosario became the sixth player in team history to notch 20 goals and 20 assists in a Black-and-Red jersey. Jaime Moreno, Christian Gomez, Marco Etcheverry, Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta are the other five esteemed players in the 20/20 club. Young Ironman At just 21-years-old, United midfielder Perry Kitchen has already logged 6,000+ minutes for the Black-and-Red. In 2011, Kitchen became the only rookie in United’s 18-year history to lead the team in minutes played (2,726). In 2012, Kitchen appeared and started in 32 games. His 2,804 minutes played came in only one shy of tying the club’s previous single-season record for minutes (2,805).

D.C. UNITED-PORTLAND TIMBERS PLAYER CONNECTIONS D.C. UNITED & Milos Kocic • D.C. United selected Milos Kocic in the second round (21st overall) of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. The goalkeeper made four league appearances for United (three starts). Kocic finished his rookie season with nine saves in 308 minutes of action with a 1-2-1 record. & Ryan Miller • D.C. United claimed Ryan Miller off waivers on 9/15/08, and he made three appearances for United in the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League. In two seasons with the Black-and-Red (2008 and 2009), Miller did not feature in an MLS match. & Rodney Wallace • D.C. United selected Rodney Wallace as the 6th overall pick (just ahead of United’s Chris Pontius) in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Maryland. Wallace became one of the steadiest players in United’s 2009 squad, starting 25 of 28 appearances as a rookie in MLS. In 2010, Wallace started all 11 matches he featured in for United before sustaining an injury that kept him out the remainder of the season. DWAYNE DE ROSARIO & Will Johnson • Will Johnson and Dwayne De Rosario are frequently called up to the Canada Men’s National Team for international competition. Johnson has been recalled by Canada multiple times, earning 33 caps for his country. The Timbers captain most recently appeared in friendlies against Japan (3/22) and Belarus (3/25) in Doha, Qatar. De Rosario first started playing for the CMNT in 1998. To date, De Rosario has made 73 appearances (60 starts) and tallied 20 goals for Canada, most recently appearing in a friendly against the U.S. Men’s National Team on 1/29. NICK DELEON & Andrew Jean-Baptiste • Andrew Jean-Baptiste’s No.1-ranked Connecticut (UConn) Huskies met Nick DeLeon’s No.8-ranked Louisville Cardinals on 10/1/11, seeing Jean-Baptiste and the Huskies top the Cardinals 1-0 in an overtime victory. Both players started the game. The two would meet again in the 2011 Big East Tournament, with precisely the same results, UConn defeating Louisville 1-0 for the second time in 2011. & Darlington Nagbe • Darlington Nagbe’s (and then- teammates Perry Kitchen and Chris Korb’s) University of Akron Zips (coached by Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter) met Nick DeLeon’s Louisville Cardinals on 12/12/10, seeing Nagbe and the Zips walk away with a 1-0 win and the 2010 College Cup. & Michael Nanchoff • Michael Nanchoff’s (and then- teammates Perry Kitchen and Chris Korb’s) University of Akron Zips (coached by Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter) met Nick DeLeon’s Louisville Cardinals on 12/12/10, seeing Nanchoff and the Zips walk away with a 1-0 win and the 2010 College Cup. DEJAN JAKOVIC & Will Johnson • Will Johnson and Dejan Jakovic are frequently called up to the Canada Men’s National Team (CMNT) for international competition. Johnson has been called up to the CMNT multiple times, earning 33 caps for his country. HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter has helped lead the Timbers to a positive result in 11 of the team’s first 12 matches of the 2013 MLS season, including a current club-record, 10-game unbeaten stretch. Porter has been named the MLSsoccer.com Coach of the Week twice this year (Week 6, Week 9). Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a threetime All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

MATCH DAY PREVIEW Saturday’s match marks Portland’s one, and only, trip to RFK Stadium to face D.C. United during the 2013 MLS season. Unbeaten in an MLS-club record 10 straight games, the Timbers put their streak on the line against a D.C. United team that is winless in nine consecutive games. D.C. United snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City on May 19 at RFK Stadium. Midfielder Chris Pontius, who missed the previous two matches with a groin injury, delivered the assist on D.C. United’s game-tying goal in the 65th minute. Forward Lionard Pajoy leads D.C. United with two goals. The Eastern Conference side has scored six goals in 11 games. The Timbers extended their MLS-club record unbeaten streak to 10 games despite losing defender Futty Danso to a red card in the 81st minute while trailing 2-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 18. Substitute forward Jose Valencia, making his first appearance since March 16, tallied the game-tying goal off an assist from Will Johnson in the 84th minute. Johnson finished the game with a goal and an assist, tallying Portland’s first goal with a 52nd-minute penalty kick.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT D.C. UNITED SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2013 ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES The all-time series between D.C. United and the Portland Timbers is brief, encompassing only three matches, yet filled with close, hard-fought matches. Making only their second trip ever to RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., the Timbers have earned an 0-1-2 all-time record against D.C. United. In 2011, D.C. United snapped Portland’s season-opening, five-game home winning streak at JELD-WEN Field in a 3-2 win on May 29, 2011. In a match that featured four goals in the final 23 minutes and two penalty kicks (one for each team), the Timbers late comeback attempt fell just short. In the penultimate game of the 2011 season, the Timbers earned a 1-1 draw at RFK Stadium, ending D.C. United’s playoff hopes, while remaining in the hunt for the final Wildcard spot in the MLS Cup playoffs (New York later earned the final spot). Last season at JELD-WEN Field, D.C. United took a 1-0 lead following a controversial handball call on David Horst as he jumped to block a cross. Forward Bright Dike equalized in the 79th minute as the Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to five games in a 1-1 draw. D.C. and Portland have combined for three penalty kicks in three games in the all-time series.

LAST TIME VS. D.C. UNITED Forward Bright Dike found the back of the net for a second straight match, scoring the equalizer late in the second half as the Timbers fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against D.C. United on Sept. 29, 2012. After a scoreless first half, forward Chris Pontius put D.C. United ahead 1-0 on a penalty-kick goal at the hour mark. Portland was able to fight its way back and found the equalizer in the 79th minute on a hard-working play by Dike to extend its then-unbeaten run at JELD-WEN Field to five matches. Dike scored his fourth goal in eight games, midfielder Franck Songo’o took a team-high five shots and defender David Horst helped anchor a backline that allowed only two shots on goal for the Timbers. Portland out-shot D.C. United 7-0 over the final 30 minutes of the contest. Songo’o had two shots in the final minutes of the match, including a quality look from the top of the six yard box in the 87th minute. Portland Timbers 1, D.C. PA MODOU KAH DEBUTS FOR RESERVES

RELIABLE RICKETTS

Defender Pa Modou Kah, who signed with the Timbers on May 3 for the remainder of the 2013 season, made his debut for the Timbers Reserves in a 1-1 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves on May 19. Kah started and played 45 minutes in the match. Kah, 32, joined the Timbers after playing the last two seasons with clubs in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kah has also featured for top clubs in Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands during his career. He won a title with Norway’s Vålerenga in 2002 and played in nearly 200 league matches over seven seasons (2004-11) at Dutch side Roda JC. On the international level, Kah has 10 caps with the Norway National Team.

Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts surpassed 10,000 minutes in his MLS career on May 12 against Chivas USA and has played a key part in Portland’s current 10-game unbeaten streak. The Jamaican international is a five-time winner of the MLS AT&T Save of the Week (four times during the unbeaten streak) and is tied for second in MLS with four shutouts this season. Ricketts strung together the second-longest shutout streak (312 minutes) this season from March 30 to April 21.

Currently the longest unbeaten streak in MLS, Portland became the 26th team (and fifth since 2010) to compile a 10-game unbeaten streak in MLS history after the draw against Whitecaps FC. During the streak, Portland has earned a 4-0-6 record while scoring 16 goals and conceding nine. Along with the overall streak, the Timbers extended their road unbeaten stretch to six consecutive games (seven including the final road game of the 2012 season).

SCOUTING D.C. UNITED D.C. United began the season with a 1-1-1 record, but a seven-game losing streak from March 23 until May 11 sent the club to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Head coach Ben Olsen’s squad has battled injuries to key players Nick DeLeon and Chris Pontius, while the offense has struggled to find consistency during the first third of the MLS season. Forward Lionard Pajoy leads the team with two goals, while four players have tallied one goal each. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who has made 70 appearances for D.C. United since 2010, has started 10 of 11 games this season. D.C. United made a trip to the Eastern Conference finals last year, but lost standout midfielder Andy Najar on a transfer to Belgian side Anderlecht ahead of the 2013 season.

LAST ONE STANDING Through 12 games, Portland is tied for the best winning percentage on the road (1-0-5, .583) and is the only remaining team yet to suffer a road loss while already matching the team’s away goal-scoring total from 2011 and 2012. The Timbers have earned at least a point in each of their first six road contests, including a come-from-behind, 2-2 draw against Vancouver on May 18. This season, Portland has earned draws on the road at Seattle (March 16), Colorado (March 30), San Jose (April 21) and FC Dallas (May 8). On April 27, the Timbers overcame two, one-goal deficits in a 3-2 road win at Sporting Kansas City. Portland’s 10 goals on the road ranks second in the league.

IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS The Timbers are tied for the league lead with 20 goals and rank among the top five in several statistical categories. Portland ranks second in both assists (20) and shots on goal (62), while coming in fourth in shots (175). Midfielder Will Johnson is tied for third in the league with five goals and midfielder Diego Valeri is tied for the league lead with four assists. Midfielder Diego Chara’s two gamewinning assists rank second among league leaders.

SECOND-HALF THREAT Portland has scored an MLS-high 16 goals in the second half of games this season, including a league-best six goals during the first 15 minutes following the halftime break. On the defensive side, the Timbers have conceded only five goals in the final 45 minutes this season, which ranks just behind Sporting Kansas City (4) for the league’s best second-half defense.

TEAM OF THE WEEK Midfielder Diego Chara was an honorable mention for the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for Week 12 of the MLS season following a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 18. Chara, who has started each of Portland’s first 12 games this season, has been selected for Team of the Week for two straight weeks. The Colombian was featured in the Team of the Week for Week 11 after a 3-0 shutout against Chivas USA. The Timbers have had a player selected for the Team of the Week (first team or honorable mention) every week expect Week 4 (bye) and Week 10 (scoreless draw vs. New England).

UPCOMING MILESTONES Midfielder Jack Jewsbury’s next goal will be the 25th of his career. Jewsbury has started each of the last nine games for the Timbers. Jewsbury is also closing in on 20,000 minutes played in his MLS career. As of May 25, Jewsbury has played 19,646 minutes in his career, needing just 354 minutes (nearly four full matches worth) to reach the milestone. Defender Michael Harrington’s next assist will be his 15th career MLS assist. Harrington earned a career high four assists in 2007 and 2010 with Sporting Kansas City. The North Carolina native’s next point will be the 25th of his career. Midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe is two games away from his 75th career MLS appearance. The second overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, Nagbe has made 73 appearances for the Timbers. Midfielder/forward Rodney Wallace’s next goal will be the 10th of his MLS career. Wallace has scored six of his nine career MLS goals for the Timbers, including a career high-tying three this season.

TIMBERS EARN 2-2 DRAW AT VANCOUVER Midfielder Will Johnson recorded a goal and an assist and forward Jose Valencia scored his first career MLS goal to help the Portland Timbers to a come-frombehind 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC before 19,823 fans at BC Place on May 18, extending Portland’s MLS-club record unbeaten streak to 10 games. Playing with 10 men, Portland found the game-tying goal in the 84th minute as Valencia settled a long pass from Will Johnson and outmaneuvered a Vancouver defender before slotting the equalizer past Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Brad Knighton. The Timbers became just the second team this season to earn a tie or win after receiving a red card while trailing in a match, extending their road unbeaten streak to seven games (including the 2012 season).

SETTING NEW MARKS Timbers midfielder Will Johnson set a new career high with his fourth goal of the season in a 3-0 win on May 12 against Chivas USA. Johnson equaled his career high in points (9) against Chivas USA. The midfielder is also on the cusp of breaking his career highs in assists (3) and points (9) this season. In 990 minutes of action, Johnson has registered four goals, one assist and nine points for Portland. His next goal will be the 15th of his career.

A RESILIENT GROUP Through the first 12 games of the season, the Timbers are the only MLS club to earn a .500 or better record when conceding the first goal of a game. Portland has conceded the first goal in six of 12 matches, but the team has battled back to earn at least a point in five of those six games (1-1-4 record). Playing down a man, and trailing by one, forward Jose Valencia scored the equalizer in the 84th minute for a 2-2 draw against Vancouver on May 18. The Timbers trailed twice against Sporting KC on April 27 before earning a 3-2 win on the road. Portland has surmounted a pair of two-goal deficits this season (3-1 on March 3 vs. New York; 2-0 on March 30 at Colorado) to earn draws. No other team in the league has accomplished that feat so far this season.

TIMBERS HOST WILMINGTON IN OPEN CUP The Timbers will play host to USL PRO side Wilmington Hammerheads in the third round of the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, May 29, at JELD-WEN Field at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
