CHIVAS USA vs PORTLAND TIMBERS STUBHUB CENTER, Carson, Calif. May 28, 2014 (WEEK 13, MLS Game #115) 7:30 p.m. PT (KPTV FOX-12/Estrella) Two teams aiming to make a move up the Western Conference table meet at midweek when Chivas USA play host to the Portland Timbers on Wednesday evening at StubHub Center. Chivas sit at the foot of the division standings but return home off a two-game undefeated road swing, their last match a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas. The Timbers are just a point ahead of Chivas USA, but have now gone five games without defeat, coming off a 2-1 win at the New York Red Bulls last weekend. REFEREE: Edvin Jurisevic. A Will Johnson goal in the fourth minute canceled out by an Erick Torres tally late in the match to leave the teams in a 1-1 draw, April 12 at Providence Park. When the Timbers defeated Chivas USA 5-0 last Oct. 26, it was their first win ever at StubHub Center. They were 0-5-2 combined previously in Carson against both Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy. Coaches record: Wilmer Cabrera vs. POR: P1 W0 L0 T1 … Caleb Porter vs. CHV: P4 W2 L0 T2 LAST MEETING (MLS) 4/12: POR 1, CHV 1 (Johnson 7 – Torres 74) The Timbers took the lead after just seven minutes. Maximiliano Urruti picked up a failed Chivas USA clearance and threaded a pass to Darlington Nagbe, who sliced a pass through two defenders to Will Johnson in open space. His rolling shot from just outside the box slipped past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. But the visitors hit for the equalizer 16 minutes from time. Following a long pass down the left wing, Leandro Barrera crossed to the far post to an open Erick Torres, who tapped in for the easiest of finishes. PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-1-2-3): Donovan Ricketts - Alvas Powell, Pa Modou Kah, Mamadou Danso, Michael Harrington - Diego Valeri - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Kalif Alhassan (Gaston Fernandez 62), Maximiliano Urruti, Darlington Nagbe. CHIVAS USA (4-2-3-1): Dan Kennedy - Eric Avila, Eriq Zavaleta, Carlos Bocanegra, Andrew Jean-Baptiste Carlos Alvarez, Agustin Pelletieri - Mauro Rosales, Thomas McNamara (Marky Delgado 65), Leandro Barrera (Kris Tyrpak 88) - Erick Torres (Bobby Burling 90). CHIVAS USA Chivas USA return to action after stretching their undefeated run to a modest two games, reaching a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on May 17 at Toyota Stadium. Chivas USA sit in a tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with 10 points from 11 games. LAST MATCH Chivas USA took the lead in the 60th minute. Martin Rivero switched the ball to Mauro Rosales on the right flank, and he sent a sharp cross to midfielder Marco Delgado, who finished it past FCD goalkeeper Raul Fernandez for his first career goal, a day after his 19th birthday. But FC Dallas pulled even in the 83rd minute. Fabian Castillo slipped between defenders to get into the goal area and got onto the end of a cross from Jair Benitez, redirecting it past Dan Kennedy for the equalizer. Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera made one change to the team that rolled to a 3-1 win against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Mauro Rosales came back into the team in place of Agustin Pelletieri.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
CHIVAS USA (4-2-3-1): Dan Kennedy - Eric Avila, Bobby Burling, Carlos Bocanegra, Donny Toia - Oswaldo Minda, Martin Rivero - Mauro Rosales (Eriq Zavaleta 87), Marky Delgado, Leandro Barrera (Carlos Alvarez 62) - Erick Torres (Ryan Finley 79) TEAM NEWS Chivas USA return to StubHub Center after a two-game road swing where they took four of a possible six points following the draw at FC Dallas. “When we lose, we don’t give up, and when we have won, we know the next one won’t be easy,” Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “We go game by game and work throughout the week. The results you can see on the field and, little by little, we’re getting there.” The equalizing goal for FC Dallas came with seven minutes to play, the seventh goal Chivas USA have allowed in the final 15 minutes of matches, tied for second-most in MLS this season (with Sporting KC and Philadelphia, behind Portland with 8). “Fantastic result for us. Two-game road trip and we got four points in total, so it's really a great step for our team and something to build off of,” said goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. “We don't like conceding goals, but given the circumstances, we'll take a tie in that game.” Marky Delgado scored his first professional goal, in his 23rd career league appearance over three seasons after signing as a Homegrown Player in 2012. “I’ve known Marky since he was in the residency program,” Cabrera said. “He’s a good player and he’s getting more mature, getting there and getting better. It’s important for him and the whole tram; Marky scored, but the whole team was working to provide that opportunity.” Said Delgado: “I've worked hard all my life, ever since I was a youngin' to get to this point, and to finally get my first MLS goal, I couldn't really celebrate. I didn't know what to do. I just wanted to go down in tears, but it's during the game. It's a dream come true to me.” Making his second consecutive start since coming to Chivas USA, Martín Rivero recorded his second assist in those games. Mauro Rosales returned to the starting lineup after a two-match absence and recorded his fourth assist of the season, his first since March 22 when he had three assists over the opening two games of the season. PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers extended their undefeated run to five games with their second victory of the campaign, coming back for a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening at Red Bull Arena. The Timbers are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 13 points from 12 games. LAST MATCH The Red Bulls took the lead in the 35th minute after Timbers center back Pa Modou Kah brought down Lloyd Sam in the penalty area and referee Drew Fischer pointed to the spot. Bradley Wright-Phillips stepped up to take the spot kick and converted it for his 10th goal of the season. The Timbers struck back seconds before halftime. Maximiliano Urruti saw he had space and unleashed a shot from about 20 yards out that took a deflection before beating New York goalkeeper Luis Robles. The winner came 16 minutes before the final whistle, as Urruti struck again after a cross from the left made its way to the back post and the Timbers striker banged in the rebound. Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made two changes to the team that reached a 3-3 draw with the Columbus Crew at Providence Park. Rauwshan McKenzie and Jorge Villafana came into the back four, in place of Mamadou Danso and the suspended Alvas Powell. PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-3-1): Donovan Ricketts - Jack Jewsbury, Rauwshan McKenzie (Norberto Paparatto 79), Pa Modou Kah, Jorge Villafana - Will Johnson, Ben Zemanski - Darlington Nagbe, Diego Valeri (Gaston Fernandez 92+), Steve Zakuani - Maximiliano Urruti (Fanendo Adi 84). TEAM NEWS The Timbers extended their undefeated streak to five games with the win at New York. They have played to seven draws in their first 12 games this season. A year ago they played in 15 ties to lead MLS, one shy of the league’s single-season record (set in 2011 by New York and Chicago). “I thought after we gave [up] the first goal we were the better team the rest of the game. I thought until the first goal they were probably better, they had us on our heels a little bit, but after we gave up the goal you saw the response,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “We showed what we are capable of. I thought we were very dangerous all night, I thought we defended well overall. It looked like the old Timbers.” Said midfielder Will Johnson: “It’s kind of getting hit in the face, but we don’t get knocked down. You better knock us out if you want to take a punch at us because we’re going to come back fighting, and that’s exactly what we did.” Maximiliano Urruti scored a pair of goals – and now has three goals in the last two games – in scoring multiple goals in a game for the first time in his MLS career.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“We believe in Maxi, early in the year he missed some chances and lost a little bit of confidence, but he's in great form right now and that's exactly what you want out of your strikers. He and Gastón [Fernández] and even [Fanendo] Adi, all have done well recently with their minutes,” said Porter. “Right now we have all three of our strikers playing pretty well. That will be important down the stretch.” Rauwshan McKenzie made his first start of the season at center back, his first minutes in a league match since Aug. 30 of last year. Center back Norberto Paparatto also saw his first action since April 5, coming on as a late substitute. He had started four of the season’s first five games. Jorge Villafaña also made his first start for the Timbers after his arrival from Chivas USA in the offseason, playing the full match at left back. “I thought it was key that some of the new guys we inserted did well, like Jorge Villafaña, Rauwshan McKenzie and [Norberto] Paparatto,” Porter said. “I thought Rauwshan McKenzie was really good all night, he hasn't played a lot of minutes and he went into a very difficult situation playing a great team on the road and I thought he was up for it against two of the best strikers in the league. And then Paparatto went in and he made two or three good plays he needed to make. I thought it was a real team effort tonight and we can build off this moving forward.” Said Urruti: “It always helps out the player to get minutes. Continuity is very important and little by little I'm getting used to the league and that's one of the most important things.” Steve Zakuani recorded an assist for a second consecutive game, making his fourth consecutive start in a wide attacking role.

Chivas USA vs. Portland Timbers – MLS Week 13
Wednesday, May 28, 2014 – StubHub Center; Carson, Calif. – 7:30 p.m. (PT) Local Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM
Second Leg of Conference Clash Chivas USA come off a bye week to now host Western Conference foe the Portland Timbers in a mid-week showdown on Wednesday at the StubHub Center. The match will mark the second leg of the season series and can be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
Last Match Action Chivas USA battled FC Dallas to a 1-1 draw on May 17 to secure a road point at Toyota Stadium and deliver their second-straight result. The Red-and-White took the initial lead on Homegrown product Marco Delgado’s first career goal in the second half. FCD equalized late in the match on Fabian Castillo’s tally for the clubs to split points in the Western Conference showdown. After the sides looked to get on the front foot and gain an edge in ball possession in the first part of the first half, the Rojiblancos generated the first scoring threat of the match in the 23rd minute. Forward Erick Torres was taken down outside of the box and to the left of the arc to set up a free kick from about 22 yards out. Midfielder Mauro Rosales then fired directly at goal but could not get the shot on frame, as the strike sailed wide left of the post. Six minutes later, Rosales played a free kick into the box from long distance along the right seam. Center back and captain Carlos Bocanegra managed to get on the end of the entry, but his header attempt also traveled wide. Chivas USA took the lead in the 60th minute when Rosales took control of a pass sent to him from across the pitch inside the right edge of the box. Rosales then worked the ball toward the six-yard box near the end line to set up Delgado’s onetime tap-in that was drilled to the back of the net inside the near post. The Red-and-White nearly doubled their lead in the 71st minute on Martin Rivero’s strike from behind the arc. The midfielder’s shot was on frame but FCD goalkeeper Raul Fernandez just managed to keep the ball out with a one-handed diving save to his left to keep the match at 1-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of the contest. FCD pulled even in the 83rd minute when Jair Benitez found Castillo inside the sixyard box with a cross from the right side. With a crowd near the mouth of the goal, Castillo placed his shot to the back of the net with a short side tap-in. Chivas brought on their final substitution with three minutes left in regulation and with five minutes of stoppage time added, held on to turn away the home side’s late attack to keep the result locked at one.
Chivas USA vs. Portland Timbers – MLS Week 13
Wednesday, May 28, 2014 – StubHub Center; Carson, Calif. – 7:30 p.m. (PT) Local Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM
Red-and-White Notes Chivas USA Look to Take Series Lead
Chivas USA enter Wednesday’s conference battle looking to take the lead in the season series. The sides played to a 1-1 draw at Providence Park in April and now square off in the rematch at the StubHub Center. The Timbers took an early lead in the first meeting by the seventh minute and held the advantage for over 70 minutes. In the 79th minute, striker Erick “Cubo” Torres leveled the match with his tap-in from short range assisted by a Leandro Barrera cross from left side of the box for the Goats to secure the hard-fought road point.
Red-and-White Will Be Without Minda
Chivas USA midfielder Oswaldo Minda will be unavailable for Wednesday’s match because of yellow card accumulation. In addition, the central midfielder has been called up to Ecuador’s National Team as part of the country’s preliminary 30-man World Cup roster. La Tri will compete in a pair of friendly matches beginning on May 31 in Dallas against Mexico and then a June 4 meeting in Miami against England.
Road Goats
Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera has led his squad into six road tests so far in the regular season and has come away with points in four of them. The Red-and-White’s draw in Week 11 marked the second-straight road result and it appears as though Chivas are finding ways to assert themselves as the visiting side. The Goats are 1-2-3 on the road and will look to translate that success into Wednesday’s home match. If not for an FC Dallas tally in the 83rd minute and a last-second equalizer in stoppage time that was conceded in New York, the Goats could be heading into their mid-week showdown in striking distance of the fifth spot in the Western Conference.
‘Cubo’ Torres Continues Blazing His Scoring Trail
Chivas USA striker Erick “Cubo” Torres in his second MLS season has picked up where he left off in 2013 by scoring in eight of the Red-andWhite’s first 11 matches. The 21-year-old is among the top scorers in MLS with eight tallies and his 15 career goals have tied him with former club standout Sacha Kljestan for fourth place on the club’s all-time scoring list. In addition, the Guadalajara native recently surpassed the popular Carlos Hermosillo for second place among MLS’ all-time Mexican-born goal scores. Torres is now two shy of breaking Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s alltime record of 16.
Kennedy Kountdown for All-Time Records
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy recently broke former Chivas USA standout Jonathan Bornstein’s club record for all-time starts with his 118th start in front of the Red-and-White goal and also holds the club record for all-time minutes played with 10,694. Kennedy has now pushed the all-time starts mark to 119 and will surely continue to add to it throughout the season. The netminder is now three games shy of breaking Bornstein and Francisco “Panchito” Mendoza’s club record 123 appearances.
Jean-Baptiste Will Miss Facing Former Club
First-year Chivas USA defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste will miss facing his former club in the series rematch. The third-year University of Connecticut product started at left back in his first return to Portland in April and played the entire 90 minutes. The versatile defender also helped build up the play that led to Erick Torres’ equalizer late in the contest to come away with the 1-1 result. Jean-Baptiste is currently recovering from a sports hernia repair and has sat out the last four matches. The 21-year-old helped lead Portland to the Western Conference finals last season and was acquired by Chivas in an off-season trade.
Rosales Back in Starting XI, Among League Leaders
Midfielder Mauro Rosales returned to the starting lineup in Week 11 after recovering from a leg injury that limited his action in the previous two matches. The attacker showed no hesitation on the pitch and delivered his team-high fourth assist in the 60th minute to help lead the Red-andWhite to a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas. In the process, the first-year Goat put his name back among the League leaders in assists. Rosales gave way to a defensive substitution in the 87th minute to help preserve the road point and has likely benefited from the bye week to come back even sharper ahead of Wednesday’s contest.

Goats Notes & Facts (Cont.) Rivero Regaining Familiar Form
After Chivas USA acquired Martin Rivero via trade from the Colorado Rapids in April, the central midfielder has already recorded two assists in three appearances. Rivero made his second start for the Red-and-White in Week 11 and was responsible for whipping the ball across the pitch to winger Mauro Rosales inside the right edge of the box for his fellow Argentine to work the ball toward the six-yard box near the end line and dish off his assist. The previous week at Colorado, Rivero linked up with forward Erick Torres when he sent a diagonal cross from the right flank for the striker to head in the go-ahead score. The third-year attacker is surely making a case for himself to remain in the Starting-XI by displaying the same quality that made him one of the top newcomers to MLS during his stint with the Rapids.
Five Off-Season Acquisitions Make Their MLS Debuts, 11 Make Their First Red-and-White Appearance
Five Chivas USA off-season acquisitions have made their MLS debuts thus far in the season, including rookies Thomas McNamara – who recorded his first career goal in Week 1 – and Kristopher Tyrpak. Midfielders Leandro Barrera and Agustin Pelletieri have both become key starters in the season’s first 11 contests. Defender Donald Toia made his pro debut in Week 4 at Red Bull Arena off the bench. In addition, midfielders Mauro Rosales and Martin Rivero and left back Tony Lochhead, who have a combined eight seasons of League experience under their belt, have also made their Red-and-White debuts. Defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste made his club debut at home in Week 5. The recently-acquired attacking duo of Marvin Chavez and Ryan Finley joined the Rojiblancos on May 8 and made their club debuts in Week 10 as second-half subs. In his first appearance with Chivas, Chavez recorded a brace in a span of nine minutes.
Additional Connections
Midfielders Jorge Villafaña and Ben Zemanski began their professional careers with Chivas USA. Villafaña – who was sent to Portland in exchange for Andrew Jean-Baptiste – played in 86 regular-season matches (63 starts) and registered seven goals and six assists with the Rebaño Angelino from 2007-2013. Zemanski was drafted by the Red-and-White in 2010 out of the University of Akron and made 58 starts in 72 appearance for the Goats while recording a pair of goals to ago along with seven assists.
Looking Ahead
After Wednesday’s match, the Red-and-White will have a short turnaround time before hosting the Philadelphia Union the following Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. (PT) interconference showdown at the StubHub Center. Because of MLS’ schedule format, the match will mark the only meeting of the regular season against the Eastern Conference side.

LAST MATCH RECAP The Timbers overcame an early deficit to earn their first road victory of the season with a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls, extending their unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches in front of 19,513 fans at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night. Despite conceding the opening goal on a first-half penalty kick, Portland responded with two unanswered goals while earning its first road win of the 2014 season, and its first-ever win at Red Bull Arena. Forward Maximiliano Urruti, who became the ninth Timbers MLS player – and second this season – to register a brace, netted the game-winning goal with a low drive inside the far left post following a deflected cross from defender Jorge Villafaña in the 74th minute. Portland has come from behind to register a result in four of five matches during its unbeaten streak. With the win, the Timbers have earned a result in seven of their last eight matches.

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turnaround season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33). Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm. Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Timbers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tournament appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

MCKENZIE, VILLAFA„A EARN FIRST STARTS Defenders Rauwshan McKenzie and Jorge Villafaña each earned their first starts of the 2014 season on Saturday against New York. The start was also McKenzie’s first appearance for the Timbers this season. Playing 90 minutes, Villafaña helped create the game-winning goal for Portland, serving a cross from the left side of the penalty box that deflected off a New York defender before falling to forward Maximiliano Urruti, who burried his shot inside the far left post for the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.
CHANCES CREATED Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri (29) and midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe (24) each rank among league leaders in chances created (including assists) in the league through 12 matches this season. Valeri ranks fifth overall.
