HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 56-39-44, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT PHILADELPHIA UNION SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 2017 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (T 1-1) BOX SCORE

MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers battled the New England Revolution to a 1-1 draw at Providence Park on April 2. Diego Valeri scored the Timbers goal early in the first half, with the midfielder recording his fifth league goal in five games played this season.

VS.

With the draw, the Timbers (3-1-1, 10pts) are 15-3-3 over their last 21 regular-season matches played at Providence Park, dating back to the 2015 MLS campaign. Portland opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game when Valeri scored his fifth goal of the season, producing an acrobatic volley to power the ball into the top right corner. The finish took place after midfielder Darlington Nagbe played the ball wide for midfielder Diego Chara, whose floated cross forced a short clearance from New England defender Chris Tierney, with the ball landing to Valeri near the penalty spot, creating an opening for the midfielder to fire a first-time volley past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Cody Cropper and into the top corner. Six minutes into the second half, the Timbers continued to put the New England backline under pressure when Adi attempted to chip Cropper from distance, with the striker clipping his effort just high of the target. One minute later, Portland created another strong chance on goal when Blanco weaved his way past two Revolution defenders inside the box, before having his touch deflected into the path of midfielder David Guzmán, who blasted a powerful shot just high of the crossbar in the 51st minute. In the 64th minute, with Portland continuing to push forward, Chara found space on the left side of the area and drove a powerful cross through the six-yard box, narrowly missing defender Roy Miller who was charging into the space. Less than 15 minutes later, Valeri played a clever through ball in behind New England’s defense, releasing Adi for a first-time attempt that went wide of the far post. Going against the run of play, New England (1-2-1, 4pts) managed to level the score with six minutes remaining in the game when midfielder Lee Nguyen pounced on a loose ball in the box, finishing from close range to record his third goal of the season in the 86th minute of play. Two minutes later, Portland came close to regaining the lead when defender Alvas Powell clipped the ball to the near post, finding Adi for a whipped header that narrowly missed the target.

Additionally, the Timbers remain unbeaten at Providence Park in their last eight matches, dating back to the 2016, compiling a 7-0-1 home unbeaten record. QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On his evaluation of the game… “We are obviously disappointed to give up the late goal. Never looked like we would, and that is something in this sport that we have all been through. These results – you give up a goal, you don’t see it coming. It’s looking like it’s going to be two for us, game over. A lot of good little looks that could have been goals. Some other opportunities if the passes would have been better, if the crosses are a bit better, then that result is different. But that’s the margins, the fine lines in this game, in this league. The play was very positive, overall on both sides of the ball, especially in the first half. The second half was good too. We had a lot of little half looks. [Fanendo] Adi has the cross with the header. Roy Miller had a header on a corner kick. Adi had another left-footed shot, where he was played in on a breakaway. He had one where he was probably taken down in the box. Guzman and Blanco a few good chances. We thought we deserved three points, but this game isn’t about what you deserve, it’s what happens. It’s not the end of the world. It’s a point, we dropped two points. We move on from it. We get back to work and we keep improving. We will look at this game, but overall this was a very positive performance. In fact in that first half it’s hard to play much better than that. It was some of the best football we’ve played here. We will certainly look at that as a real positive. We have to do a bit better in the second half finishing and closing out the game.” On the performance of Marco Farfan, in making his home debut… “Excellent. It’s one thing to go play on the road, sometimes the pressure is off at little bit. To come at home and put together a similar performance like the one he had in LA, it just shows this kid, his future and I thought he was great on both sides of the ball.”
