HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT SPORTING KANSAS CITY SATURDAY, AUG. 18, 2018 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS D.C. UNITED (L 1-4) MATCH RECAP Playing their first of two matches in a four-day span this week, the Portland Timbers fell 4-1 to D.C. United before 18,219 fans at Audi Field on Wednesday night, snapping the team’s five-game unbeaten run away from home in league play, dating back to May 5. Forward Samuel Armenteros scored the team’s lone goal in the match, tallying his eighth goal of the season, while midfielders Sebastián Blanco and Andy Polo each contributed an assist. Timbers firsts Midfielder Tomás Conechny made his MLS debut in Wednesday’s match. Originally signed by the Timbers (10-5-7, 37pts) on July 17, 2018, the 20-year-old midfielder entered the match in the 73rd minute, playing the final 17 minutes against D.C. United (6-9-6, 24pts). Goals-against average Despite the result, the Timbers still maintain one of the strongest goals-against-average in the league since recording their first regular-season win on April 14, conceding just 19 goals during that stretch, which ranks as the second-fewest in MLS. Additionally, Wednesday’s match marked just the second time this season the Timbers have been defeated by more than one goal. Key plays The Timbers opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first half when Armenteros scored his eighth goal of the season. The striker was able to find the back of the net in the 35th minute after a clever build-up play on the left side of the box between Blanco and Polo created space for Polo to drive a well-weighted cross through the center of the box for Armenteros, who hit a first-time effort into the back of the net. With two minutes remaining in the first half, D.C. United leveled the score when midfielder Yamil Asad slipped a weighted pass in behind for forward Wayne Rooney, who slotted the ball away from inside the box. D.C. United took the lead in the 47th minute when defender Oniel Fisher received a pass from midfielder Luciano Acosta, scoring from the far right side of the 18-yard box. Portland threatened shortly after Fisher’s goal when Armenteros laid the ball off for Valeri, who struck a low, driven effort from just outside the box, pulling his shot just wide of the far post in the 64th minute. The home side was able to find a third goal when Rooney converted a free kick from just outside the box in the 69th minute. D.C. United scored the game’s final goal in stoppage time when forward Darren Mattocks was able to find the back of the net against the run of play.
NOTES • • • • • • •
Samuel Armenteros scored his eighth goal of the season, ranking second on the team in 2018. Sebastián Blanco notched his fifth assist of the season, which ranks second on the team. Andy Polo notched the first assist of the season. Polo is the ninth player to tally an assist for the Timbers this season and 54th player to record an MLS assist for the Timbers. Tomás Conechny made his Timbers debut in the match. NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese Overall thoughts on the match… “It was a difficult match. I thought that we had a good first half. We started well. We did a lot of good things. We were compact. We created chances and were moving the ball the right way until we became too casual, and we allowed them to score the goal. In the second half, maybe the guys didn’t come in with the right mentality. At the end, it’s my responsibility, my fault, so I take full blame of this defeat and we have to continue to work. In the second half, they were better than us. They wanted it a little bit more than us and they deserved the victory.” On the goals that the team conceded… “Those are the moments that you cannot concede because then the game becomes very difficult and that is moment where you show your mentality. And, I thought that we gave up those two goals and then the game became very difficult. But, as I said before, it’s my responsibility and we have to continue to work.” Portland Timbers forward Samuel Armenteros Thoughts on the match… “Thoughts right now are obviously not that positive, it’s hard to feel good after a 4-1 defeat just after the game. Obviously we have to let this one sink in and learn from the wrongs, and there were many in this game. It’s time to be critical, it’s time to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask are we doing everything that can be done for us to take the three points instead of them. So obviously it’s a tough loss, but I’m happy it happens now rather than the week before the playoffs so we can adjust the problems that need to be adjusted before the actual time comes.” Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara Thoughts on the match… “It was a tough match. We tried to score but we made mistakes and obviously today it ended in a tough loss.”

MILESTONE MARKER
Sporting Kansas City enters Saturday’s match after posting two straight wins in league play, snapping a six-game winless streak across all competitions, dating back to June 23. In the team’s most recent league match, Sporting KC defeated Los Angeles FC 2-0 at Banc of California Stadium on Saturday. Forward Johnny Russell and forward Daniel Salloi are tied for the most goals on the team, with seven goals each, while midfielder Roger Espinoza has the most assists (8).
Since making his debut for the Timbers as a 19-year-old in 2013, defender Alvas Powell has now played in 115 MLS matches for Portland. Against D.C. United on Aug. 15, Powell became the 15th player in Portland’s all-era history to play 115 league matches for the Timbers.
HEADS UP Through their first 22 games in league play, the Timbers are tied for the most headed goals (11) in MLS, with midfielder David Guzmán scoring the team’s most recent header in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 4. Portland defender Larrys Mabiala has recorded four total goals in 2018, all headers, ranking fourth in the league for headed goals in 2018.
SCORING AWAY FROM HOME Since the start of the 2017 season, midfielder Diego Valeri ranks fourth in the league for goals scored (12) away from home, while Sebastián Blanco ranks tied for the eighth-most road goals scored (8) during that stretch. As a team, the Timbers have scored 37 goals on the road during that span, ranking tied as the fourth-most in the league.
AWAY FORM Dating back to the start of the 2014 MLS season, the Timbers are tied for the fourth-most away wins (21) in the league, recording seven away wins in 2014 and also in their 2015 championship-winning season. So far this season, the Timbers are tied for the fifth-most away wins (3).
CLOSING OUT GAMES Heading into Saturday’s game, the Portland Timbers have been effective at closing out games through their first 22 games of the 2018 MLS regular season campaign. The Timbers have held a lead at the 75th minute mark in nine games this seaosn, posting a solid 7-1-1 record in those matches.
TIMBERS FIRSTS
IRONMAN Portland defender Larrys Mabiala has played every single minute of 29 consecutive MLS matches for Portland (2,610 minutes), dating back to 2017. Only one field player in MLS has a longer active streak of consecutive minutes played (Sporting Kansas City’s Ilie Sanchez - 2,970 minutes). Additionally, with 22 appearances (22 starts) this season, Mabiala is the first Timbers defender to start a season with at least 20 straight starts in MLS play.
STRIKE RATE In just over 1,000 minutes of regular-season action in the 2018 MLS campaign, forward Samuel Armenteros has posted eight goals, ranking as the second-most on the team, in his debut MLS season. Armenteros is the fourth Timbers player to score eight or more goals in his first season in MLS, joining Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi, and Sebastián Blanco.
STINGY DEFENSE Since recording its first win of the season in mid-April, Portland has conceded just 19 goals in regular-season play during that stretch, which ranks as the second-fewest in MLS during that span. For comparison, Sporting Kansas City has conceded 21 goals since April 14.
BETWEEN THE PIPES In his 16 regular-season starts this season, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella has only two losses, conceding just 17 goals. His goals-against-average of 1.01 is the best in the league. Additionally, Attinella’s 404-minute clean-sheet streak (April 14-May 19) is the longest by a Timbers goalkeeper in MLS play. As a team, the Timbers have conceded the third-fewest goals (25) in the league this season.
CLEAN-SHEET VICTORIES
Midfielder Tomás Conechny made his MLS debut in Wednesday’s match. Originally signed by the Timbers on July 17, 2018, the 20-year-old midfielder entered the match in the 73rd minute, playing the final 17 minutes against D.C. United. Portland has fielded 25 different players in MLS play this season.
Prior to the team’s 2-1 win over LAFC on May 19, the Timbers recorded three consecutive shutout victories for the first time in their MLS era and the first time across all eras in club history (since 1975) since a four-game shutout streak in the 2007 campaign (June 28-July 13, 2007). Dating back to the start of the 2015 MLS campaign, the Timbers are tied for the sixth-most clean sheets in MLS, with 31 clean sheets during that stretch.
