HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS. TORONTO FC WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29, 2018 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (L 0-1) BOX SCORE

MATCH RECAP Playing the first of back-to-back home games in a four-day span, the Portland Timbers surrendered a late goal, falling 1-0 to Seattle Sounders FC in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Sunday night. Creating chances The Timbers (10-7-7, 37pts) finished the match with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including a 14-2 edge in the first half. As a team, Portland created 17 chances in the match from eight different players, including a game-high eight chances created by Diego Valeri. Key plays Portland generated an early chance in the eighth minute of the match. Diego Chara earned a free kick just outside the box on the left wing, and Valeri stepped up and delivered a curling strike that went just wide of the left post. Less than a minute later, Sebastián Blanco weaved his way down the right side of the box, beating multiple Seattle defenders, before firing a shot from close range that was blocked at the right post. On the ensuing corner kick, Julio Cascante sent a powerful header just over the crossbar. Leading the counter-attack in the 24th minute, Andy Polo found space out wide on the left side and dribbled down field. He quickly played the ball back to Valeri near the edge of the box. Valeri played a back-heel pass to Blanco, who fired a long-range strike, forcing a save by Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei. Outshooting Sounders FC 14-2 in the first half, the Timbers remained on the front foot with the first chance of the second half on the break in the 48th minute. Valeri dribbled down the right flank and fired a dipping shot from the edge of the box, but Frei was able to parry the attempt away at the left post. Samuel Armenteros came close to breaking the deadlock in the 71st minute. Portland kept possession after a corner kick was played through the box to the left side. Zarek Valentin chased down the ball, made a quick turn to get around Will Bruin and delivered a lofted cross for Armenteros at the right post, but he sent his header from close range just over the target. Seattle (11-9-5, 38pts) claimed the lead in the 76th minute on an own goal. Seattle’s Kim Kee-hee dribbled down the right wing into the box, firing a low, hard cross into the center of the box. Cascante stepped in front of the cross and it took a deflection off him and into the back of the net.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On his message to the team following the match… “We need to be better because we were better than Seattle today. We have to make sure that we don’t give any space - [Seattle] took advantage of one moment and it changed the game when it was in our hands. We had it. We were completely dominating this match. We were working very hard; we had [Seattle] all over the place. Credit to them, they defended well, but they created nothing until the moment that they scored the goal - we gave it away. We just have to make sure that we’re a little bit better to go all the way and be able to win a game that we had in our hands. I was very proud of the work that the guys did. We played basically in [Seattle’s] half the entire second half until the goal game - then it became difficult. Until that moment, we played very well.” On having the team regroup before Wednesday’s match... “These guys are professionals - they know how to bounce back. I was proud of a lot of things that we did today. Now, there’s another game on Wednesday. If we do the same thing that we did today and we’re able to stay focused the entire match, then most likely we’re going to win against a tough Toronto team. In the MLS, every game is tough; everybody is going to bring you something different. From what I saw today, I saw a lot of good things up until the moment of the goal. We have to be better to make sure that this doesn’t happen.” Portland Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella On the team’s recent form… “It’s obviously a tough one, but at the end of the day, the way the schedule is laid out, it’s all about Wednesday (against Toronto FC). We’ve got to put this one behind us as fast as we can and get ready for Wednesday, because we need all three. We know that going into it. Obviously, there are positives we can take from this game, but at the end of the day, we lost. It was a missed opportunity.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS. TORONTO FC WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29, 2018 SCOUTING TORONTO FC

IRON MEN

Toronto FC enters Wednesday’s contest following a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact at BMO Field on Aug. 25, which extended a two-match unbeaten run. Forward Sebastian Giovinco registered a first-half brace, his 15th MLS career multi-goal game, in the win for Toronto. Giovinco leads the team in goals (10) and ranks third in the league in assists (12). Midfielder Jonathan Osorio ranks second on the team with nine goals in 2018, which marks a new career high.

Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri started and played 90 minutes in the team’s 1-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC. Valeri is the only player to start and play all 24 matches for the Timbers this season. Defender Zarek Valentin is the only other Timbers player to feature in all 24 matches this season.

AGAINST THE EASTERN CONFERENCE Since 2016, Portland has posted a record of 8-1-5 against Eastern Conference opponents at Providence Park. The Timbers are 2-0-1 at home against Eastern Conference teams in 2018. In those matches, Portland has outscored its opponents 8-2 with seven different players tallying goals. In addition, the Timbers have scored two or more goals in all three matches, while recording two shutouts.

HOME FORM Despite playing their first five games of the 2018 campaign away from home, the Timbers still maintain one of the strongest home records since the start of the 2016 campaign. During that stretch, Portland has recorded 30 wins (30-7-9) at home, which ranks second in the league only behind the New York Red Bulls, (32), despite playing two fewer games than MLS teams ranked in the top five for home wins during that span.

SCORING AT HOME Since the start of the 2016 season, the Timbers have been one of the most prolific home teams in the league, with 93 goals scored at Providence Park. Portland’s 93 goals since 2016 rank tied with the Houston Dynamo as the thirdmost in the league.

CLOSING OUT GAMES Heading into Sunday’s game, the Portland Timbers have been effective at closing out games through their first 23 games of the 2018 MLS regular season campaign. The Timbers have held a lead at the 75th minute mark in 10 games this season, posting a solid 7-2-1 record in those matches.

TIMBERS FIRSTS Midfielder Tomás Conechny made his MLS debut for the Timbers on Aug. 15. Originally signed by Portland on July 17, 2018, Conechny scored his first USL goal in his second appearance on loan with T2 against Orange County SC at Merlo Field on Aug. 22.

EL MAESTRO With a goal in Portland’s most recent home match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Aug. 11, Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri tallied his team-leading ninth goal of 2018. With the finish, Valeri, who also has 10 assists, is one of three players in MLS to post nine-plus goals and 10-plus assists in the 2018 season.

TIMBERS INJURY REPORT QUESTIONABLE: Larrys Mabiala (thigh), Jorge Villafaña (shoulder) OUT: Roy Miller (right thigh), Jake Gleeson (tibia surgery) * As of Aug. 28, 2018

HEADS UP Through their first 24 games in league play, the Timbers are tied with Atlanta United FC for the second-most headed goals (11) in MLS, with midfielder David Guzmán scoring the team’s most recent header in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 4. Portland defender Larrys Mabiala has recorded four total goals in 2018, all headers, ranking fourth in the league for headed goals in 2018.

STRIKE RATE In over 1,100 minutes of regular-season action in the 2018 MLS campaign, forward Samuel Armenteros has posted eight goals in 14 starts, ranking as the second-most on the team, in his debut MLS season. Armenteros is the fourth Timbers player to score eight or more goals in his first season in MLS, joining Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi, and Sebastián Blanco.

MILESTONE MARKER Since making his debut for the Timbers as a 19-year-old in 2013, defender Alvas Powell has now played in 116 MLS matches for Portland. Against D.C. United on Aug. 15, Powell became the 15th player in Portland’s all-era history to play 115 league matches for the Timbers.

BETWEEN THE PIPES In 18 regular-season starts this season, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella has only four losses, conceding 21 goals. His goals-against-average of 1.17 ranks as the fifth lowest in MLS in 2018 amongst goalkeepers with at least 10 starts. Additionally, Attinella’s 404-minute clean-sheet streak (April 14-May 19) is the longest by a Timbers goalkeeper in MLS play. As a team, the Timbers rank sixth in the league in fewest-goals allowed (35) this season.

CLEAN-SHEET VICTORIES Prior to the team’s 2-1 win over LAFC on May 19, the Timbers recorded three consecutive shutout victories for the first time in their MLS era and the first time across all eras in club history (since 1975) since a four-game shutout streak in the 2007 campaign (June 28-July 13, 2007). Dating back to the start of the 2015 MLS campaign, the Timbers are tied for the sixth-most clean sheets in MLS, with 31 clean sheets during that stretch.

DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS The Timbers secured their 10th win in league play on Aug. 4 when the team defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-0. With the win, Portland reached the doubledigit win plateau this year in the fewest number of games in any of its eight MLS seasons since joining as an expansion club in 2011.

REIGNING MVP Midfielder Diego Valeri entered the 2018 MLS season as the reigning Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, after becoming the first Timbers player to receive MLS MVP honors following a record-setting 2017 campaign. Valeri’s record-setting season was highlighted by a team-high 21 goals, a career-high for the midfielder, and a team-high 11 assists, marking the fourth time the midfielder has hit double digits in goals and assists in his five seasons in MLS.
