LAST MATCH RECAP Midfielder Jack Jewsbury registered the game-winning goal in the first minute of second-half stoppage time and the Portland Timbers tied an MLS-club record with their fifth consecutive home win in a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes in front of a sellout crowd of 21,144 fans on July 5 at Providence Park. The Timbers outshot San Jose 23-7, including 7-2 on goal, while earning their fifth consecutive home win at Providence Park since May 27. HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his third season with the club in 2015 after guiding the Portland Timbers to record-setting campaigns in his first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive turnaround season and the club’s first-ever MLS postseason appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regular-season goals, a club record across all eras. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccerrelated figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year award winner, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches with a 35-20-32 mark (.586) after leading Portland to double-digits wins in each of his first two seasons. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering an impressive regularseason mark of 22-5-17 at Providence Park over the last two-plus seasons. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while compiling one of the highest point totals (44) across the final two-thirds of the regular season – recording the highest goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history. Portland also made its first appearance in CONCACAF Champions League, contesting matches against Alpha United of Guyana and C.D. Olimpia of Honduras during the competition’s group stage. During Porter’s first season as head coach in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS singleseason record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella. ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.
PORTLAND TIMBERS AT PHILADELPHIA UNION SATURDAY, JULY 11, 2015 ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES The Timbers and Union have squared off five times since Portland entered MLS in 2011. The Timbers have earned a 2-0-3 overall record against their Eastern Conference counterparts, including a scoreless draw at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., in their last road trip to face the Union on July 20, 2013. Last season, the Timbers played host to the Union in the 2014 MLS season opener for both teams as Portland earned a 1-1 draw with a stoppage-time equalizer at Providence Park. Historically, the teams have not had high-scoring meetings, as just one of the five previous matches has seen more than two combined goals scored - a 3-1 win for the Timbers on March 12, 2012, in the 2012 MLS season-opening match at Providence Park. Portland has not traveled to face the Union since a scoreless draw on July 20, 2013 - a span of 721 days. In two previous games at PPL Park, Portland and Philadelphia have played to consecutive scoreless draws (Sept. 10, 2011, and July 20, 2013).
LAST TIME VS. THE UNION Gastón Fernández scored in his MLS debut to help the Portland Timbers battle back to earn a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union in the 2014 MLS season opener for both clubs on March 8, 2014, before a sellout crowd of 20,674 at Providence Park. Trailing 1-0 in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, the Timbers earned a corner kick after midfielder Steve Zakuani saw a shot deflected inside the penalty box. Midfielder Will Johnson delivered a quickly taken corner kick that glanced off a Union defender before Fernández headed the ball inside the left post to tie the match in the closing seconds.
