HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 58-44-47, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2017 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS AT SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (L 0-1) BOX SCORE

MATCH RECAP Playing their second away match in as many weeks, the Portland Timbers fell 1-0 to Seattle Sounders FC before 47,362 fans at CenturyLink Field on Saturday afternoo. Holding a 19-8 edge in shots in the game, Portland (5-5-3, 18pts) also recorded a season-high 448 successful passes to maintain 52 percent of the possession in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. The game’s lone goal occurred early in the contest when midfielder Cristian Roldan was able to score from a set piece, redirecting defender Chad Marshall’s header from midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro’s corner kick to give Seattle (4-5-4, 16pts) the lead in the fourth minute of play. With the Timbers producing 15 shots in the first half, which ranks tied as the secondmost shots for Portland in the first half of an away match since joining MLS in 2011, the Timbers created a solid chance on the break fewer than 10 minutes after the opening goal. After recovering the ball just inside Seattle’s half, midfielder Darlington Nagbe drove at the Sounders FC defense, laying the ball wide for forward Fanendo Adi, who had his strong, left-footed effort pushed wide for a corner in the 11th minute. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball found its way to midfielder Sebastián Blanco on the edge of the box for a powerful strike that forced a strong save from Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei. In the 18th minute, Portland continued to put pressure on the Seattle backline when midfielder David Guzmán received the ball on the edge of the area, firing an effort that was headed toward the target, with Seattle midfielder Oswaldo Alonso just managing to block it away from danger with a last-ditch tackle. Ten minutes before halftime, the Timbers produced another effective attacking sequence when Guzmán played a long diagonal pass over the Sounders FC backline to release Blanco, who took a touch inside the box before hitting an attempt that went just high of the far corner. Continuing to attack in search of a goal in the first half, the Timbers created their strongest chance of the half in the 43rd minute when Guzmán’s curling corner kick found Lawrence Olum at the near post, with the midfielder flicking the ball to defender Liam Ridgewell at the far post for a close-range header that went just high of the crossbar. Next up, the Timbers will return to Providence Park to play host to the San Jose Earthquakes on Friday, June 2. Beginning at 8 p.m. (Pacific), the match against San Jose will be broadcast live on UniMas and KPTV FOX 12 with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

Saturday’s match marked the 96th contest between Portland and Seattle since 1975. Portland outshot Seattle 19-8 in Saturday’s match. Portland is the first road team to have more possession and more than double Seattle in shots since April 4, 2015, when the Houston Dynamo recorded 56 percent possession and a 16-5 edge in shots. The Timbers had 15 shots in the first half, which ranks tied as the second-most shots produced by the Timbers in the first half of a road match. The Timbers finished the match with 448 successful passes, the most by Portland in a match this season. The output was also the most by a single team in any match between the Timbers and Sounders in the MLS era. Midfielder Darlington Nagbe completed 57 of his 59 attempted passes, while attempting four shots and creating two chances. Nagbe’s 96.6 percent passing accuracy is the highest percentage by a Timbers player this season (minimum of 40 passes). Ten different Timbers players had multiple tackles in the match. It is the third time Portland has done that in the club’s MLS era (July 31, 2016, vs Sporting Kansas City and Oct. 8, 2014, vs San Jose Earthquakes).

QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On his overall thoughts on the match… “We’re very disappointed to not get anything out of the game. The reason we’re disappointed is because we played very well. It was undeniable to me that we were the better team on the day. When you look at every category in terms of chances, in terms of possession and in terms of every metric you want to measure, we were the better team. That’s what makes it disappointing. I thought the guys deserved to get something out of the game, and it didn’t happen. I think when you play the game and you play so well and you leave empty-handed – it’s tough to swallow. But it also leaves you with a lot of optimism and hope moving forward because the play was good. It was the best we played against this team here. That doesn’t make anybody feel any better, but in moving to the next game that means not a lot needs to change. We just need to keep playing that way and make a few more plays. Obviously we didn’t make a play on the goal. Everybody was marked up on the set piece and we just don’t make a couple of plays there, and that was the difference on the day. Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell On his thought process after conceding an early goal… On his thought process after conceding an early goal… “We started so well. It’s just a corner and flick on and flick into goal. Disappointing one to concede from a corner, but we were still confident going into the game and creating chances and playing so well. That’s probably the hardest thing about it. To play so well, certainly in the first half and come out with nothing.”
