BOX SCORE

Playing in the coldest game in MLS history with a kickoff temperature of 18 degrees, the Portland Timbers earned a point on the road with a 3-3 draw against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in their 2019 season opener. Diego Valeri registered a goal and an assist, while Sebastián Blanco tallied his first goal of the campaign in the first of 12 road games to begin the campaign for Portland.

AT

Key plays The Rapids took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of the match as Kei Kamara opened the scoring. Serna and Kellyn Acosta worked the ball down the left side of the field. Receiving the pass from Serna, Acosta delivered a cross into the box for Kamara, who finished from close range in the center of the box. After a scramble in the box in the 26th minute, David Guzmán headed the ball into the back of the net at the goal line, but the referee called back the goal and awarded Portland a penalty kick for a handball in the box by Axel Sjöberg on the initial shot attempt by Larrys Mabiala. Valeri’s penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Tim Howard, but he parried the shot back into the box and Valeri calmly converted the rebound from close range in the 29th minute. On the ensuing corner kick, the Timbers took a 2-1 lead as Blanco tallied his first goal of the season in first-half stoppage time. Valeri played a pinpoint, curling corner kick into the box and Blanco re-directed the ball with a quick flick of his head into the back of the net. Colorado leveled the match at 2-2 in the 46th minute of the match, receiving a goal from Benny Feilhaber. His first shot from inside the box was blocked, but he stayed with the play and pushed a side-footed shot just inside the left post. The Timbers reclaimed the lead in the 66th minute, taking advantage of an own goal to grab a 3-2 lead. Holding a spell of possession just outside the Rapids goal box, Polo found space out on the right wing, dribbled at goal and fired a cross into the box that deflected off Deklan Wynne and into the back of the net. Remaining on the front foot, Jeremy Ebobisse put a shot just wide of the right post in the 71st minute of the match. Making a late run into the box, Ebobisse collected a pass from Blanco and dribbled into the box, sending a shot from a tight angle near the left post just wide of the right post. Valeri nearly scored on a direct free kick in the 82nd minute. Lining up the kick from the left wing just outside the box, Valeri’s curling strike toward the top, right corner of the goal was pushed just over the crossbar by Howard. Colorado tied the match at 3-3 in the final minute of second-half stoppage time as Andre Shinyashiki finished at the right post. Goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made a diving save on Serna’s initial shot attempt, but Shinyashiki scored off the rebound.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On his thoughts of the match… “Difficult conditions to play. We did a lot of good things, but also, we cannot allow a team with 10 [players] to score a goal right at the beginning of the second half and at the end of the second half. When we are playing well; when we are keeping the ball, when we are doing things the right way, allow them to come back into the match it wasn’t good enough for my part.” Portland Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella On if the conditions changing the way the team played… “Yeah, I mean listen it was a snowstorm. You couldn’t really get traction on the ground. There were piles of snow everywhere. So of course it changed the game. To be fair, I thought we actually moved the ball really well and created a lot of dangerous chances. It just made the game really sloppy and I think that was maybe something that led to the third goal. A better clearance here or there, on a night where it is pretty dry and normal weather conditions, maybe we clear the ball and the game is over.” On what they learn from this game going into the Los Angeles FC game… “We can’t take a second off. I felt like we had control of the game pretty much after we took that 2-1 lead, we should have had control of the game the whole time. It just kind of seemed like we took two minutes off and it’s a valuable lesson that we can’t relax at any moment and if we do we could get punished.” Portland Timbers defender Larrys Mabiala On his thoughts of the result of the match… “The feeling is that we lost two points today because even if the conditions were very difficult, we took an advantage in this game and when you are leading 3-2 in such difficult conditions you should be able to keep the score and to go home with the three points.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT LOS ANGELES FC SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 2019 SCOUTING LAFC LAFC (1-0-0, 3pts) opened its 2019 campaign with a 2-1 win at home against Sporting Kansas City. Diego Rossi and Adama Diomande tallied goals in the win, as Diomande recorded the game-winner in the final minute of second-half stoppage time. In its first MLS season in 2018, LAFC earned a berth in the MLS Cup playoffs and had one of the best home records in the league (9-1-7). Individually, Carlos Vela finished his first season in MLS ranked among the top 10 in MLS in goals scored with 14 goals in 28 games.

FACING LOS ANGELES FC Portland travels to Los Angeles for the third meeting all-time in MLS play between the two sides. The Timbers are unbeaten in their two previous matches (1-0-1) against LAFC. In the first meeting in MLS play between the two clubs, Portland recorded a 2-1 victory at Providence Park on May 19, 2018, with Samuel Armenteros and Cristhian Paredes scoring in the win. The two teams played to a scoreless draw on July 15, 2018, in the Timbers’ first MLS match on the road against LAFC, with goalkeeper Jeff Attinella making six saves and earning the shutout.

2018 SEASON IN REVIEW The Portland Timbers reached MLS Cup for the second time in four years (2015, 2018), winning their second Western Conference Championship during that span, before ultimately falling 2-0 to Atlanta United FC on Dec. 8, 2018. The Timbers held a 3-2-1 record in the 2018 postseason, including a 2-2-0 record on the road. Portland concluded the regular season with 15 wins, which tied for the most wins in a single season (2017) in the club’s MLS era. With 15 wins, head coach Giovanni Savarese tied for the third-most wins by a head coach in his first year as an MLS head coach. Additionally, the 54 goals scored during the regular season ranks as the third-highest total for the club dating back to the club’s inaugural MLS season in 2011.

SUCCESS ON THE ROAD Dating back to the start of the 2014 MLS season, the Timbers have posted the sixth-most away wins (22) in the league, recording seven away wins in 2014 and also in their 2015 championship-winning season. During their 2018 postseason run, the Timbers posted a 2-2-0 record on the road.

EXTENDED ROAD TRIP The Timbers will begin the 2019 season on the road for the first 12 games, as construction work is completed at Providence Park. The club is investing more than $85 million in private funding for an ambitious project that will transform Providence Park and add more than 4,000 new seats to raise the capacity to more than 25,000. Moreover, the significant investment represents a complete relaunch of the historic stadium, as the project includes extensive enhancements to the entire venue, including: a massive, state-of-the-art video board/ scoreboard that measures more than two times bigger than the previous board, new LED field lighting, new locker rooms for both the Timbers and Thorns FC, a new team store, new and refreshed concession stands and concourse amenities on the westside of the stadium and additional ingress/egress gates.

Midfielders Marvin Loría and Renzo Zambrano were signed from T2 on Dec. 10, 2018, after both players played key roles in helping guide the club to the first playoff appearance in team history last season. Loría made 30 appearances (25 starts) for T2, finishing the season with a team-high seven assists and recording six goals. In 2018, Zambrano made 31 appearances (30 starts), tallying three goals and three assists. Ivacic helped his former club win both the league and cup title during the 2017-18 season. During that span, Ivacic appeared in 55 matches across all competitions, posting a 0.88 goals-against average and 24 clean sheets.

BETWEEN THE PIPES In 22 regular-season starts in 2018, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella had only five losses, posting 10 wins and seven shutouts. His goals-against-average of 1.06 finished as the third-lowest during the 2018 regular season amongst goalkeepers with at least 10 starts.
