LAST MATCH RECAP Playing on the road for a second straight week, the Portland Timbers fell to the New York Red Bulls 4-0 before 18,374 fans at Red Bull Arena on March 10. Portland’s next league match will take place on Saturday, March 24, when the team travels to Toyota Stadium to take on FC Dallas at 12:30 p.m. (Pacific). The result marked the first loss for the Timbers (0-2-0, 0pts) in their last three league games played against the Red Bulls.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first six MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

Portland’s next league match will take place on Saturday, March 24, when the team travels to Toyota Stadium to take on FC Dallas at 12:30 p.m. (Pacific). Facing the Red Bulls The result marked the first loss for the Timbers (0-2-0, 0pts) in their last three league games played against the Red Bulls (1-0-0, 3pts), snapping the club’s 180-minute clean-sheet streak against New York. Additionally, the loss signified the Timbers’ first defeat at Red Bull Arena since Aug. 19, 2012, with Portland riding a two-game unbeaten streak at Red Bull Arena entering Saturday’s contest. By the numbers The game against the Red Bulls marked the first time the Timbers have gone scoreless in a match since May 27, 2017. During that stretch, Portland scored in 22 consecutive regular-season games, marking the longest goal-scoring streak in club history across all eras (since 1975) and the longest active streak in MLS, heading into Saturday’s match. Key plays The Red Bulls took the lead 18 minutes into the game when a quick combination play in the final third created a chance for 17-year-old midfielder Ben Mines, who was able to convert from the edge of the six-yard box to give the home side a 1-0 edge. One minute later, the Timbers responded with a close chance to score when midfielder Diego Valeri whipped a cross into the box for forward Samuel Armenteros, whose header was deflected wide of the target from close range in the 19th minute. Shortly before halftime, the Timbers created their strongest chance of the first half when Armenteros was released on the break for a one-on-one chance with goalkeeper Luis Robles, with the striker just flashing his effort wide of the target in the 30th minute. Pressing high up the field in the second half, Portland created back-to-back chances in a two-minute span when midfielder David Guzmán’s long-range volley forced a strong save from Robles in the 60th minute, before a powerful header from Dairon Asprilla forced another difficult diving save from the goalkeeper just two minutes later. With 13 minutes remaining in the game, New York doubled its lead when a flicked header from a corner kick found forward Bradley Wright-Phillips, who quickly headed the ball into the far corner. Three minutes later, the Red Bulls added a third when forward Carlos Rivas took the ball in stride and finished from inside the 18-yard box. Three minutes into stoppage time, the Red Bulls added the final goal of the game when Rivas managed to score his second goal of the match in the 93rd minute of play.

We could’ve won this match if we wanted to and we allowed them to be able to get the better of it because they wanted it more. The attitude was better from them. There were moments in which we looked like we were in control. This game, we could’ve won if we wanted to. We have to continue to work and if we want to be the type of time that wants to win a championship we need to do a lot more work. PORTLAND TIMBERS AT FC DALLAS SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2018 SCOUTING FC DALLAS Entering Saturday’s match, FC Dallas is unbeaten in their first two league games to start the season, drawing Real Salt Lake 1-1 on March 3 and defeating Seattle Sounders FC 3-0 most recently on March 18, with both games taking place at Toyota Stadium. The 3-0 win against Sounders FC, which featured a brace and an assist from Roland Lamah and a goal from Maxi Urruti, marked head coach Oscar Pareja’s 63rd win with the club. With the brace, Lamah leads the team in goals scored to start the 2018 season. Additionally, with the win, Pareja surpassed Schellas Hyndman for the second-most wins in franchise history. In addition to the team’s two league games, FC Dallas has also played two matches in the CONCACAF Champions League, falling 3-3 on aggregate to Panamanian side Tauro FC in the Round of 16.
UPCOMING MILESTONES With his next assist, midfielder Diego Valeri will rank second for assists in club history across all eras (since 1975). Valeri currently has 53 assists, ranking tied with Willie Anderson. EXTENDED ROAD TRIP Due to the construction currently underway at Providence Park as part of phase one of the stadium expansion, the Timbers will play their first five league games on the road in 2018. NEW LEADER AT THE HELM Heading into the 2018 MLS regular season, the Timbers announced the club’s third head coach in its MLS era, naming Giovanni Savarese as the new man in charge for the club’s first team. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 65-26-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships.
REIGNING MVP Midfielder Diego Valeri enters the 2018 MLS season as the reigning Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, after becoming the first Timbers player to receive MLS MVP honors following a record-setting 2017 campaign. Valeri’s record-setting season was highlighted by a team-high 21 goals, a career-high for the midfielder, and a team-high 11 assists, marking the fourth time the midfielder has hit double digits in goals and assists in his five seasons in MLS.
