LAST MATCH RECAP Behind three second-half goals, the Portland Timbers recorded their third win of the season with a 4-2 win against the Houston Dynamo before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on March 18. With the win, the Timbers are unbeaten in their first three league games, continuing the team’s strongest start to a season in the club’s MLS era. Midfielder Diego Valeri recorded his second brace in three games played in the win against Houston, while forward Fanendo Adi and midfielder David Guzmán each added a goal and an assist in the second half. With the four-goal production against the Dynamo, Portland has scored 10 goals so far this season, marking the most goals scored through the first three games to start a season across all eras in club history (since 1975). Opening the first half on the front foot, the Timbers scored just 11 minutes into the match when Valeri converted from the penalty spot. Portland found the equalizing goal when Valeri scored his second goal of the game in the 58th minute, tallying his fourth finish of the season. Portland took the lead in the 66th minute when Guzmán finished Darlington Nagbe’s pass to score his first goal for the Timbers, while Adi finished the scoring in the 88th minute.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first six MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. The streak ranks as the third-longest all-time in MLS history.

HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 56-39-44, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

Saturday’s game marked the 109th consecutive sellout for the Timbers at Providence Park. The Timbers have won seven consecutive home matches, dating back to the 2016 season, marking the longest home winning streak in the club’s MLS era. For the first time in the club’s MLS era, Portland has won their first three matches of the season. Portland is unbeaten in its last five home matches against Houston, with a 4-0-1 record. Portland is the only MLS Western Conference team to start the 2017 season with three wins. The team also has a plus-seven goal difference. Portland has scored 10 goals through three matches. The 10 goals is the most the club has scored in the first three matches of the season in all eras of the club (since 1975), passing the previous mark of seven set in 2005. Portland held the Dynamo to just one shot in the second half of the match. It is just the third time the Timbers have held an opponent to one shot in the second half of an MLS match. Diego Valeri scored his sixth career brace and second brace this season for the Timbers. In the match, Valeri became the fourth Timbers player to score at least 40 goals for the club, joining Fanendo Adi, John Bain, and Byron Alvarez. Valeri has scored five goals against the Houston Dynamo, which ties for the most goals he has scored against a single club (Chivas USA). Dating back to last season, Adi has scored in seven consecutive home matches for the Timbers. Portland has won all seven of those matches. David Guzmán scored his first goal for the Timbers. Guzmán also notched his first assist of his Portland career in the match. Zarek Valentin made his 2017 season debut in the match, delivering the third assist of his MLS career.

QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On the team’s performance in the second half... “I think it shows the heart they have. The hunger they have. The fight they have. And it’s every single player on the pitch. Every single player. Obviously there are certain guys who fight because it’s in their DNA, but you need fight out of guys like [Sebastián] Blanco and guys like Darlington [Nagbe] and [Diego] Valeri. I was really proud of the entire team, but I was really proud in the second half with those three guys in particular because it’s not always natural for those guys to want to dig and fight and grind and battle. I thought the whole team did that, but we got it out of everybody and that was the main reason we were on the ball so much because we kept winning it back with our pressure and I thought we just played with a real edge, a real ruthlessness that I’ve been wanting to see and we showed that. So I’m real pleased with obviously that second half and to be honest with you the entire game we were pretty good. The PK was tough, but we got one as well so that kind of washes out. But the only takeaway for me is we have to manage that one counter attack better, but outside of that I thought we were excellent the majority of the 90 minutes.” Portland Timbers forward Fanendo Adi On the come-from-behind victory… “It means a lot. Even though we were down 2-1 in the first half, but we talked at halftime about putting them under pressure and that’s exactly what we did. We pressed very high, and everyone put in a lot of work. It’s great to come back from 2-1 down to win the game 4-2.”
